Indie filmmaker Todd Solondz has for over four decades batted off ratings battles, jeers and boos at film festivals, and censorship controversies for his unflinching and scaldingly funny deadpan dioramas of American suburban life.

He’s found comedy in the darkest places and the most messed-up people, whether a father of three (Dylan Baker) who’s also a pedophile in “Happiness,” a middle-school social outcast (Heather Matarazzo) in “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” or a Hispanic housekeeper who poisons her employers with carbon monoxide in “Storytelling.” His 1998 “Happiness” shocked Cannes with its bleak sexuality and cringe characters, compelling even the Sundance Film Festival to refuse to screen it.

The pressure was on after the cult classic — recently burnished in 4K by the Criterion Collection — for Solondz to follow its winning formula. After the follow-up “Storytelling,” he brought to Venice “Palindromes,” a disturbing comedy about a 13-year-old girl desperate to have a baby.

Carrie Coon couldn’t tease much about The Gilded Age Season 3, but she had one particular group of people to thank for keeping the show going.

During an interview for The White Lotus Season 3 premiere, Coon thanked “the gays” for their support in renewing the Julian Fellowes-created drama.

“The gays saved it,” Coon joked with Entertainment Tonight. “Thank you, right now, you saved it. We would not have a season three without you.”

The Gilded Age was renewed for a third season days after Season 2 concluded in December 2023, following solid ratings for the period drama. According to HBO, total premiere-night viewing for the season grew for six consecutive weeks, culminating in a series high for the Season 2 finale.

Cross creator Ben Watkins opens up about his long-term plans for the hit thriller TV series.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Watkins discussed the cliffhanger ending that closed out the first season of Cross. While touching on the importance of signpost moments that help provide the framework for the series' upcoming second season, Watkins also explained how far along the blueprint for the series goes. "All of those things are because I already had a four-year plan," Watkins said. "We want this thing to go for 10 seasons, but in my head, I had already made a four-year plan, and its based on some things that I want to do to mine and pay homage to the characters that are in the Alex Cross book series. Even though Im doing new stories, I want at some point for there to be a dovetail between these characters, so Ive been planting these seeds.

The horror genre keeps churning out great movies, such as the intoxicating Hugh Grant thriller Heretic. Part of its success is how it's able to produce movies that not only terrify audiences with gross-out scenes or a well-timed jump-scare, but also be a ton of fun. A great example of this is the Terrifier series, with Terrifier 3's funniest moments arriving among the requisite brutality and gore. Thanks mainly to Art the Clown's silent, but deadly, humor.

However, it's not just more recent horror films that have managed to be creepy as all hell, while bringing some solid fun along the way. Classic franchises have gained popularity thanks to quick-witted villains like Freddy Krueger, who is also incredibly creepy. The great thing about the horror genre is its ability to bring audiences together, to share an experience that'll be intense, and uncomfortable at times, but also a lot of fun.

Despite a terrible natural disaster in San Francisco in 1971, “I’m Charlie Walker” is an interesting story about grit, business, and race conflict. The movie tells the true story of Charlie Walker, a Black truck owner who had to deal with systemic racism while also taking advantage of a chance that came up out of the blue during the huge oil spill under the Golden Gate Bridge.

There is chaos when two oil ships crash into each other and spill 800,000 gallons of crude oil along the beautiful coastline of Northern California. This environmental nightmare could be a lifesaver for Mike Colter’s character, Charlie Walker. Walker feels discriminated against in the trucking business, which is mostly made up of white people. He sees the cleanup operation as his chance to break long-standing racial barriers.

San Francisco is still dealing with deep-seated racial strife and environmental problems as the story takes place.

The Gilded Age season 3 is on the way, and the continuing popularity of the historical drama makes it a surefire hit. Trick 'r Treat fans just got a much-needed update about the franchise's big-screen future. Michael Doughtery, who wrote and directed the original horror movie, recently offered a positive update on the long-gestating sequel.

In a new commentary track for Trick 'r Treat, released in Arrow Video's 4K Ultra HD edition of the movie, Dougherty opened up about the difficulties plaguing the sequel, which was first announced back in 2013. "Its tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people dont realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies," said Dougherty (via Bloody Disgusting) about having to work within the studio system for Trick 'r Treat.

Todd Solondz’s Happiness is a film with a reputation that precedes it. Cinephiles are familiar with the dark-comedy and its disturbing, boundary-pushing story whether they’ve seen it or not. In fact, when I received my copy of the notorious movie to review, I asked several of my friends in the industry what type of experience I was in for. Surprisingly, none of them had seen it. Unsurprisingly, all of them were very much aware of it.

Now, Solondz admits that Happiness would not survive a release in the modern movie industry, despite his obvious affection for the controversial film.

Happiness follows the lives of three sisters and their families, each of whom find themselves in the midst of all-too-contemporary challenges. While the film depicts a number of hot-button issues, including infidelity, sexual harassment and assault, and mental health, the primary reason for the controversy surrounding Happiness is due to its explicit portrayal of pedophilia.

Philip Seymour Hoffman had a few tricks up his sleeve for being cast in Todd Solondz’s “Happiness,” but the one that sealed the deal surprisingly was out of Hoffman’s hands.

Solondz told The Guardian that the 1998 feature, which is receiving a 4K digital restoration courtesy of Criterion, had clout even during the casting process. According to Solondz, his career was at a high point, leading to big stars like Hoffman auditioning.

“I’d had an unexpected success with my movie ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ and, knowing how fleeting that can be, I wanted to take advantage,” Solondz said. “Everyone wanted to work with me.”

Yet because the dark comedy centered on a pedophile, later played by Dylan Baker, it was a tricky project to sell and cast.
