Season One of the French comedy series “Sex (Re)Education” (originally titled “Septieme Ciel”) hits the sweet spot for relatable, engaging character comedy. The premise of playful sex and budding romance at a senior living home could easily have veered into a couple of extremes – cloying sentimentality, or raunchy wisecracking akin to “The Golden Girls”. I feared the former; might have enjoyed the latter, and was completely satisfied with this relatively low-key middle ground.
The series opens with cranky old Jacques (Feodor Atkine) being shunted to private care for her house by his daughter (Irene Jacob), largely because he can’t stand her husband of 20 years, and his wife’s death two years earlier ramped up deployment of his curmudgeonly side. He wanted no part of senior living, despite the upscale look and amenities of the facility until approached by coquettish Rose (Sylvie Granotier), who arouses an attitudinal 180… among other things.

This War of the Worlds review contains spoilers.
Dieu merci! My prayers were answered. After two action-heavy, plot-stuffed episodes that replaced atmosphere with incident, this week War of the Worlds got back to what really matters: existential discussions over red wine and 20-year-old songs about the fragility of mortal life. A bomb went off too, for those who prefer their apocalypse more fast and furious. Something for everybody.
While the London crew were being blasted apart in every sense, Catherine, Sophia and Nathan were grieving, healing and connecting in a French farmhouse. After the attack on the Observatory, they’d holed up in the university library to search for references to Professor Bill Ward without the help of Google or the Ctrl+F function. Eventually, his author blurb was spotted on the back of a book. Now, they’re all on his trail and en route to London, having picked...

Somewhere between The Hitcher and High Tension exists Abner Pastoll’s Road Games, a bright, colorful descent into hitchhiking madness. Of course, with the mention of Alexandre Aja’s *arguably* mind-bending thriller, one can assume there’s more to Pastoll’s story than meets the eye. A killer terrorizes lonely travelers begging for a quick ride, but his/her identity remains masked, because he/she could be any of the (few) characters we’ve already encountered. For an hour and a half, Pastoll unfolds this countryside”Whodunit” caper – one littered with distracting red herrings – but, herein lies the problem: the mystery itself isn’t very mysterious.
Andrew Simpson stars as Jack, a ride-needing wanderer who can’t seem to catch a break. While seeking transportation, he’s joined by a female companion named Véronique (Joséphine de La Baume), who gets thrown out of a car after bickering with its male driver.

Thoroughly nonjudgmental in its observations, Pierre Salvadori's In the Courtyard ranks as one of the funnier films about victims of depression and mental illness. The afflicted are Antoine (Gustave Kervern) and Mathilde (Catherine Deneuve), and their chemistry provides the dynamic that powers Salvadori's idiosyncratic portrait. Antoine is a singer who no longer takes pleasure in music; a deeply depressed insomniac, he needs a change. He ends up working as a janitor in the apartment building owned by Mathilde and her husband, Serge (Féodor Atkine), and his misguided, hapless attempts to do his job provide the basis for much of the narrative. Weathered down by life, Antoine is too despondent to enforce the complex's rules: He's soon smoking crack with one ...

• It looks like Mike Epps may finally get the chance to play legendary stand-up comedian Richard Pryor after all. The comic has emerged as the front-runner to play the part in a biopic for The Weinstein Company directed by Lee Daniels (The Butler). Epps was previously signed on to play Pryor back in 2005 and met with the late comedian while he was still alive to prepare for the role, but that project fell through. Epps reportedly beat out actors Michael B. Jordan, Nick Cannon, and Marlon Wayans after Wayans had also been previously attached to another Pryor film, this one...

Indie: Odds are you missed the delightful Ernest & Celestine (Cinedigm/GKids) in theaters, although the title might ring a bell since it was one of the five Best Animated Feature nominees at this year’s Oscars. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t let this charmer pass you by. Little mouse Celestine and big, hungry bear Ernest are on opposite ends of the food chain, but they become unlikely friends who shake up their world. I think animated films are the one genre where the subtitles-versus-dubbing purism is kind of pointless, since they’re All dubbed, even in their original language. So whether you’re a fan of subtitles (the French cast includes Lambert Wilson and Féodor Atkine) or not (the English dub offers an all-star lineup including...

In conjunction with La Furia Umana, Notebook is very happy to present Ted Fendt's original English translation of Luc Moullet's "Le masque et la part de Dieu," on the films of Eric Rohmer. Moullet's original French can be found at La Furia Umana.
Cecil summed up the difference between him and his brother, William DeMille, like this: “I show a thousand camels and you show one camel and you psychoanalyze it.” Eric Rohmer is a lot more like William than Cecil, minus Freud.
What is fascinating, foremost, in his work is his obstinacy to not go beyond his only or main subject, often summed up, in a somewhat misleading way, by its title: Béatrice Romand wants a good marriage, or, at least, to help her friend have one (A Tale of Autumn), Brialy wants to caress Claire’s Knee (meaning, to be sure that she is practically consenting), Lucchini,...
