"I just want this to be a good film..." "If you care too much about this job, it will kill you." Indeed. HBO has unveiled the official trailer for the comedy series The Franchise, arriving for streaming on Max later this week. The ridiculously funny comedy series shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, asking: how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? With endless fights on set, of course! A team trapped inside the dysfunctional hell of creating franchise superhero movies, at the end of the day the question is: is this Hollywood's new dawn or cinema's last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant? This sounds hilarious and this looks way, way better than Judd Apatow's The Bubble. The series stars Himesh Patel as Daniel, Aya Cash as Anita, Jessica Hynes as Steph, Billy Magnussen as Adam, Lolly Adefope as Dag,...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill on Sunday that sought to ward off catastrophic risks of highly advanced artificial intelligence models.
The bill, Sb 1047, was the most controversial AI bill of the legislative session, with dozens of activists and AI companies lining up on either side. The authors warned that if left unregulated, AI models could be used to develop chemical or nuclear weapons, which could lead to mass casualties. Opponents argued that heavy-handed regulation would strangle the development of AI, and force AI companies to leave the state.
In a veto message, Newsom said the bill is addressing a genuine problem, but does does not establish the right regulatory framework.
“I do not believe this is the best approach to protecting the public from real threats posed by the technology,” he wrote. “Ultimately, any framework for effectively regulating Al needs to keep pace with the technology itself.”

From Sony Pictures, “Caught Stealing” is based on the books by Charlie Huston. The cast also includes Regina King, Liev Schreiber, Matt King and Bad Bunny.
Bronson is a hip-hop artist known for his laid-back flow and humourous and obscure references. He most well-known song is “Baby Blue” featuring Chance the Rapper, which reached the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015.
He’s also deeply entrenched in the culinary scene, hosting the Viceland series “Fuck, That’s Delicious” since 2016. The show has featured celebrities...

It may not be the high school reunion we’ve wanted, but Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig, producer Judd Apatow, writer/star of the show Seth Rogen and other cast members pay tribute to the nostalgic show that is still viewed as gone too soon by many fans — old and new — as the show would only last one season. The NBC dramedy series was a high school show set in the 80s and featured a cast that would go on to become notable names in future projects, including Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, John Francis Daley, Samm Levine, Martin Starr, and Busy Phillipps.
Deadline now reports that the show’s creator, producer and stars are looking back and celebrating its impact as it turns 25. Feig shared some throwback pictures on Instagram with the caption, “Freaks & Geeks premiered 25 years ago today on @nbc. It was one...

Twenty-five years after its debut, the cast and creators of the short-lived NBC series “Freaks and Geeks” are reflecting on the show’s enduring impact. While the series only aired for one season from 1999-2000, it helped launch the careers of many stars and creators. “Freaks and Geeks” also established itself as a cult favorite among fans for its raw depiction of teenage life.
Set in 1980s suburban Detroit, “Freaks and Geeks” followed high school siblings Lindsay and Sam Weir as Lindsay navigates the school’s different social circles. The show was created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow.
On social media, Feig remembered the experience as one of the most rewarding of his life that changed his career path. He is grateful to Apatow, DreamWorks, and all involved for bringing his script about growing up in Michigan to the screen.

Something special happened in Malibu on Saturday.
Global superstar Pink took a break from her record-setting Summer Carnival tour to hit the stage at a far more intimate venue than the arenas she’s been selling out in recent months by performing at Rock4EB! alongside singer-songwriter Dallas Green. The pair headlined the Epidermolysis Bullosa Medical Research Foundation’s annual fundraiser by performing as you + me, their onetime side project. The event, held at the hilltop home of Brillstein-Entertainment Partners leader Marc Gurvitz, was a star-packed affair set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, hosted once again by Judd Apatow and featuring a (savage) stand-up set by Jim Jefferies.
Special because of the elements. The guest list included Brad Pitt, Courteney Cox, Kaley Cuoco, Tom Pelphrey, Elizabeth Olsen, Charlie Hunnam, Damien Chazelle, Ed O’Neill, Jackson Browne, Kim Basinger, Mason Thames, Mckenna Grace, Aj Michalka, Aly Michalka and Catherine Bell,...

Ryan Murphy’s latest attempt to turn real-life crimes into television gold is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story which, despite being called out on social media for some pretty glaring inaccuracies, has been attracting a lot of eyeballs. Why? Because people love horrific murders thats why — just as long as they’re on TV, or in podcasts, or celebrated on a series of collectible trading cards.
It’s pretty wild that we’re living in a time when the phrase “Based on the Horrifying True Events” is a major selling point in trailers.
But this isn’t the first time that the Menendez brothers, who were famously convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, have inspired a work of fiction. One of the first narrative allusions to the case was in a movie that came out just two weeks before the Menendez brothers were sentenced: The Cable Guy. Come to think of it,...

It’s been five years since stand-up star Shane Gillis spent a total of five days as a cast member of Saturday Night Live, but Lorne Michaels still can’t believe that the show’s fanbase didn’t want to spend every Saturday night watching Gillis awkwardly mumble slurs at his co-stars.
The ascension of Saturday Night Live’s shortest-tenured cast member from podcasting microcelebrity to bona fide streaming star following the events of his 2019 hired-to-fired speedrun makes us wonder whether Gillis could have accomplished nearly as much in his already-impressive comedy career had SNL retained him through its 45th season and beyond. Noting the recent trend of Ben Affleck’s “Air,” Matt Johnson’s “Blackberry,” Eva Longoria’s “Flamin’ Hot,” and, though perhaps a bit on the silly side, Jerry Seinfeld’s “Unfrosted,” there seems to be an increasing market for stories about consumer goods and marketing. Deadline announced Wednesday that the latest to get in the act are Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg with a picture called “Cola Wars,” all about the rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
“Cola Wars,” which Spielberg will produce and Apatow will direct, is written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is best known for co-creating the series “Acapulco” on Apple TV + and was an executive producer on “Winning Time,” another nostalgia-soaked based-on-reality project about the peak years of the Los Angeles Lakers. Queen’s credits include “Cars 2” and “Cars 3.” The project is set up at Sony.

Judd Apatow directs, Steven Spielberg produces, as Sony moves ahead with Cola Wars, a movie about Coca Cola and Pepsi’s battle.
Just recently, we covered a report which looked at how Judd Apatow, the one-time king of Hollywood comedies, was struggling to get original projects off the ground. It’s been a few years since Apatow’s period as a director and ‘super-producer’, during which he shepherded lots of popular comedies through the studio system.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has selected Apatow to direct Cola Wars. It’s a drama that will recount the fierce battle between industry titan Coca Cola and upstart Pepsi in the 1980s.
We first learned of the project back in February, along with the claim that Sony had paid more than a million dollars for a pitch. Not the script mind, just the pitch. Jason Shuman and Ben Queen will be drafting the screenplay.

Judd Apatow has been attached to direct the upcoming movie Cola Wars about the battle between Coke and Pepsi for market share in the 1980s, reports Deadline. Steven Spielberg will produce.
The project is currently in the early stages of development at Sony, which reportedly acquired it for over $1 million in April. Ben Queen and Jason Shuman are set to write Cola Wars. Shuman co-created the Apple TV+ series Acapulco and served as an executive producer on Winning Time, the HBO series about the 1980s Showtime era of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Deadline previously described the movie as a behind-the-scenes account of “Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola, sparking the unforgettable ‘Cola Wars’ of the mid-1980s.” This could include the filming of a 1984 Pepsi commercial during which Michael Jackson’s hair caught on fire and the disappointing introduction of New Coke.

Begun, the Cola Wars have: Judd Apatow to direct Coke vs Pepsi movie with Steven Spielberg producing
Deadline reports that Judd Apatow has been tapped to direct Cola Wars for Sony, who shelled out $1 million in April for the pitch. The film is based on the true story of “Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola” in the mid-1980s. Steven Spielberg is also on board and will produce the project through his Amblin Entertainment production company.
The Cola Wars brought us many memorable events, including the disastrous launch of New Coke and the Pepsi commercial that left Michael Jackson with severe burns. The film is billed as “the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).” Jason Shuman (Acapulco) and Ben Queen (Cars 2) are penning the script for the project, and while it’s still in the early stages, it could be a fun flick.

Judd Apatow has signed on to direct “Cola Wars,” a film recounting the ’80s battle between Coca-Cola and Pepsi, with Steven Spielberg producing through Amblin Entertainment, TheWrap has learned.
Jason Shuman, co-creator of the Apple TV+ show “Acapulco,” is co-writing the screenplay with “Cars 3” co-writer Ben Queen.
The film will recount Pepsi’s challenge to Coca-Cola’s decades of rule as the world’s top soda, infamously leading to Coke changing its recipe to sell “New Coke,” which led to widespread horror.
The project is said to be in very early development, as Sony only just acquired the film as a pitch back in April.
Apatow most recently directed the 2022 Netflix comedy “The Bubble” and the HBO documentary “George Carlin’s American Dream.” He is repped by WME and Mosaic.
The project was first reported by Deadline.

Here's something you probably didn't expect to hear today: Judd Apatow and Steven Spielberg are making a movie together! That's right. The director of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" is making a movie with the director of numerous classics such as "Jurassic Park," not to mention one of the more prolific producers to ever do it. So, what are these two very unique titans working on together? What tale could possibly warrant such a collaboration? The tale of Coke vs. Pepsi, of course. We're not joking. This is real.
According to Deadline, Apatow is set to direct "Cola Wars," a film that will chronicle Pepsi's challenge of Coca-Cola as the number one soda in the marketplace, which began in the '80s. Spielbeg's Amblin Entertainment is set to produce the film, which is set up at Sony Pictures. The studio paid $1 million for the project earlier this year, which included a complete pitch.

Progress on Cola Wars is bubbling up, as the Sony Pictures feature has attached Judd Apatow to direct with Steven Spielberg to produce, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Apatow is set to helm the film that is still in its initial stages of development after the studio bought a pitch for the project earlier this year. Cola Wars is set to focus on the battle for soda supremacy that kicked off in the mid-1980s as Pepsi aimed to challenge Coke’s longtime dominance in the soft drink space.
Jason Shuman and Ben Queen are working on the script. Spielberg is producing Cola Wars through his company Amblin Entertainment, with Maia Eyre overseeing the film for Sony.

We’re guessing Judd Apatow isn’t a Dr. Pepper fan. The “Knocked Up” filmmaker is attached to direct “Cola Wars,” a film about the battle for market share between Coca Cola and Pepsi to become America’s favorite soda, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.
Tag-teaming with him on the project is none other than Steven Spielberg, who will produce the film through his Amblin Entertainment production banner.
The individual adds that at this point, “Cola Wars” is in very early development stages, with Apatow and Spielberg joining based on a pitch that Sony acquired back in April.
The writers for the film are Ben Queen and Jason Shuman, who co-created and writes the Apple TV+ series “Acapulco” and was also a producer on the canceled HBO series “Winning Time.”

Brand-based movies are big business in Hollywood right about now. From Air to Blackberry, and from The Beanie Bubble to Flamin' Hot to Unfrosted, there's something about getting the inside track on the stories behind the world's biggest enterprises that studios just can't get enough of. And now, per Deadline's reporting, it looks like Steven Spielberg and Judd Apatow are the latest lining up to drink the company pic Kool-Aid — or rather sup the soda-y stuff. The cinema juggernauts are teaming up to respectively produce and direct Sony's upcoming Cola Wars, a new movie that's set to pop the can on Pepsi's efforts to dethrone Coke as the kings of cola back in the late 70s to mid 80s.

Exclusive: Judd Apatow has attached to direct and Steven Spielberg has come aboard to produce Cola Wars, the film in development at Sony. Spielberg will produce through his Amblin Entertainment banner.
Deadline revealed back in April that the studio bought the project for $1 million-plus as a pitch, telling the true story of Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola. It uncapped the “Cola Wars” of the mid-1980s, which included everything from Michael Jackson’s fiery mishap to the New Coke debacle, as the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).
The Cola Wars pitch is being written by Jason Shuman and Ben Queen. Shuman is the co-creator/writer of Apple’s hit show Acapulco and was executive producer on HBO’s Winning Time, and the producer of 2022’s Oscar-nominated indie To Leslie.

Kevin Smith will always hold a special place in my heart as one of the filmmakers who defined my formative years in cinema. "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," and even the silly "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" were packed full of hilarious yet immature laughs and pop culture references that tickled my funny bone and my geek gland. But ever since he tried to make his own Judd Apatow movie with "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," which made him feel like he ruined Seth Rogen's career at the time, he's struggled to re-capture the comedic voice that once defined him.
"Jay & Silent Bob Reboot" was a clumsy return to Kevin Smith's stoner slacker duo, and while "Clerks III" had a meaningful emotional core inspired by the filmmaker's real life brush with death and a meta narrative about the beginning of his film career, the movie ultimately...

"Lights. Camera. Anxiety." HBO has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new comedy series called The Franchise, arriving for streaming on Max this October. The kooky ridiculous comedy series shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, asking: how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Ahahaha what a great question. "Because every f*ck-up has an origin story." Dive right into the mayhem. A team trapped inside the dysfunctional hell of creating franchise superhero movies, at the end of the day the question they face is: is this Hollywood's new dawn or cinema's last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant? This sounds hilarious and this looks way, way better than Judd Apatow's The Bubble. The series stars Himesh Patel as Daniel, Aya Cash as Anita, Jessica Hynes as Steph, Billy Magnussen as Adam, Lolly Adefope as Dag,...

There’s a lot to love about Love (or Kjaelighet), but the generic English title is not one of them. That handle will get this confused with works by Gaspar Noé and Judd Apatow, among others, and could potentially delay viewers finding it through search engines. Which would be a real shame, because Norwegian writer-director Dag Johan Haugerud’s dramedy, which premiered at Venice, is a refreshing delight.
Honest, thoughtful, and daringly talky as it observes modern dating customs in the age of apps, it deserves further exposure beyond the festival circuit. The second part of a thematically but not narratively linked trilogy — its predecessor Sex played in Berlin, and Dreams is yet to come — it’s sure to find traction among viewers who groove to upscale, nuanced Scandi fare like The Worst Person in the World, the sort of romantic schmooze-fests that French cinema excels at and Richard Linklater’s Before series.

With his long hair, sunglasses and bellbottoms, Hal Ashby was the epitome of the 1970s flower child, even though he was a decade older than most of the filmmakers working at the time. Though his flame burned brightly and briefly, he left behind a series of classics that signified the nose-thumbing, countercultural attitude of the era, with a bit of humanism and heart thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born on September 2, 1929 in Utah, Ashby ambled around before becoming an apprentice editor for Robert Swink, working for Hollywood legends William Wyler and George Stevens. He moved up the ranks to become an editor for Norman Jewison, with whom he shared a fraternal and professional relationship. They cut five films together, including “The Russians Are Coming! After struggling to get several projects up and running, director Judd Apatow is said to have signed up to helm the upcoming project and reverse his recent fortunes.
With films such as Superbad, Pineapple Express and Bridesmaids on his resume as a producer, there’s no debating that Judd Apatow is one of this century’s finest minds that the comedy genre has given us. Albert Brooks’s films are as smooth and polished as any American comedy could hope to be, and yet they’re freighted with submerged neuroses. Mother embodies this tension between a book and its cover. It has a high concept, the jokes are honed with a jeweler’s precision, and the staging values functionality over poetry. It superficially suggests a sitcom, and yet there’s still very much the possibility of the audience feeling “seen” by Mother, as Brooks’s sharp punchlines are more revealing than they initially appear to be.
One of Brooks’s governing themes here—and perhaps the dominant theme of his work—is how neurotics of his generation try to talk themselves out of their neuroses. Brooks’s characters appear to say what they mean, giving his films a veneer of having no subtext. But his characters’ outbursts, modeled on their generation’s obsession with therapy,...

One challenge for Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville when it came time to tackle the story of childhood comedy hero Steve Martin? That was keeping his journalist cap on without falling into fandom. “You’re building a relationship, and I’m understanding how he sees his own story and everything else,” Neville told The Hollywood Reporter. “But the fan part of it doesn’t totally go away because occasionally you’re like, ‘Tell me about the first time you were on SNL.’”
Neville avoided the fanboy approach entirely while making Apple’s Emmy-nominated Steve! (martin) a Documentary in 2 Pieces. Any young comic would have been happy to gush about Martin’s influence. So would the veterans. “Any SNL person, (Jimmy) Kimmel, Conan (O’Brien), (Jimmy) Fallon, (John) Mulaney, they all would have talked,” he said. “Judd Apatow and Patton Oswalt are obsessed with Steve. But I don’t love that kind of doc,...

Morgan Neville has a singular eye for capturing the complexities of the artistic spirit. Who better than the Oscar-winning documentarian to take on the Mount Everest of Hollywood geniuses: Steve Martin. The result, Apple’s Steve! (martin) a Documentary in 2 Pieces, is an insightful film split down the middle in stylistically distinct chapters. Part one traces Martin’s path to “wild and crazy” comedy superstardom; part two covers his decision to step away from touring and into movies, playwriting, art and quiet self-exploration. Neville, Emmy-nominated for directing for a documentary/nonfiction program, spoke to THR about the daunting task of capturing someone as complex and worshiped as Martin in a little over three hours.
“Best Fishes” [a gag poster where Martin had a fish sticking out of a his blazer] was the perfect comedy for a boy. There was something so joyful and silly about it.
It was silly, but it was smart. I didn’t get every joke. My dad loved Steve, too.

Mike Birbiglia swam on over to Largo in Los Angeles on Monday night to host a special fundraiser with some help from his celebrity friends.
The multi-hyphenate and stand-up star, currently Emmy-nominated for writing his latest special, The Old Man and the Pool, fronted the event Mike Birbiglia and Friends which raised nearly $20,000 for Ymca of Greater Los Angeles. Who needs a punchline when the recipient of the Birbiglia’s goodwill alone might make some double over. His critically-acclaimed special, which was performed on Broadway and filmed as a special for Netflix, features many jokes about his time at the Ymca, it’s “over-chlorinated pool,” and how it ultimately changed his life. There’s also a joke about the plethora of penises in the locker room, but that’s beside the point.
Joining Birbiglia were Judd Apatow, Nick Kroll, Larry Wilmore, Atsuko Okatsuka and Billy Strings, who performed for the...
