Plot: Vincent, one of New York’s leading puppeteers and creator of the hugely popular children’s television show, ‘Good Day Sunshine,’ struggles to cope with the loss of his son, Edgar, becoming increasingly distressed and volatile. Full of self-loathing and guilt around Edgar’s disappearance, he clings to his son’s drawings of a blue monster puppet, Eric, convinced that if he can get Eric on TV then Edgar will come home. As Vincent’s progressively destructive behaviour alienates his family, his work colleagues, and the detectives trying to help him, it’s Eric, a delusion of necessity, who becomes his only ally in the pursuit to bring his son home.
Review: The idea behind Eric, as depicted in the trailer for the series, is a fascinating concept. A man driven to the edge of sanity after the disappearance of his son bonds with an imaginary monster created by his child to rescue him.

The new Netflix miniseries Eric asks one of the universal questions: What if Jim Henson was an emotionally abusive drunk, his son went missing in mid-Eighties New York City, the investigation involved crooked cops and a queer nightclub and an underground encampment for the unhoused, and Henson began hallucinating conversations with his newest Muppet as a way to cope with all of this?
You know, that old chestnut.
Technically, Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Henson, but a fictional peer of the late, great puppet master: Vincent Anderson, creator and chief puppeteer of a beloved,...

Director Wade Allain-Marcus reflected on his experience directing his new film, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead, in his new uInterview.
Inspired by the 1991 film of the same name, the movie follows a teenager whose summer plans are canceled when his and his siblings’ babysitter unexpectedly dies.
Allain-Marcus thought back on the process of remaking a film, “For me when I read the script, being aware of the original but not necessarily holding it precious, was just sort of like, ‘Oh this could be a really interesting remix of the original by using some of the tent-poles from the first one and then being able to kind of take off from there.'”
When asked about the experience on set, Allain-Marcus revealed, “We shot this film in 22 days, in the midst of the writer’s strike, so a lot of that, emotionally and physically, was quite challenging. A lot of...

Sasquatch Sunset directors Nathan and David Zellner always wondered what these hairy giants do when they’re not walking – the only Bigfoot footage available has been a minute of a supposed Sasquatch wandering in the northern California woods. They decided to flesh that out in unique dialogue-free comedic imagining of the creatures’ daily life – eating, fighting, etc. Stars Jesse Eisenberg, Riley Keough, Christophe Zajac-Denek and Nathan Zellner are unrecognizable as the hairy tribe of four that entranced Sundance (see Deadline review). Bleecker Street is opening the film, written by David Zellner, executive produced by Ari Aster, in 9 theaters in New York, LA, San Francisco and Austin, ahead of a big jump to about 800 screens next week.

The original film, directed by Stephen Herek, captured the hearts of audiences with its unique blend of humor, family dynamics, and teenage rebellion. The Christina Applegate-led dark comedy from the 90s gets a shrewdly made update that acts as a blueprint for how Hollywood should revisit older material
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is the ultimate ode to the latchkey generation. To watch the 1991 film now is to be reminded of a simpler time when parents barely checked in, house parties were all the rage and Christina Applegate was the ideal girl nextdoor. Given its place in the grand tradition of coming-of-age classics, somewhere between Tom Hanks’s Big and Jennifer Garner’s 13 Going on 30, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood mulled a remake of Applegate’s celluloid breakout. Any update would have to relate to a new generation that, in many ways, has had to grow up even faster than their predecessors.

There are some movies that we should never remake. However, make no mistake, Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is not one of them. We should celebrate when bad movies are remade. Yet, while most people look back at the Christina Applegate 1991 modern (imagine me using air quotes) classic, you shouldn’t. It’s unfunny and hardly worth your time.
It’s a perfect example of why the audience dictates classics. For some reason, like the ridiculous remake of Road House, people fondly look back at films they grew up with. The remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead misses the mark like the original by not embracing the dark comedy possibilities and trading away any originality for a family comedy premise that doesn’t work.
And that’s too bad because Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead has a likable cast and has positive messaging.

If there were office pools for potential remakes of Hollywood films, it’s unlikely that Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead would have been high on anyone’s lists. After all, this 1991 black comedy starring Christina Applegate was hardly a critical or box-office sensation, and its reputation hasn’t exactly improved with time. On the other hand, it was a nearly ubiquitous presence on HBO for many years, and you couldn’t walk into a Blockbuster without seeing promotional materials for it prominently displayed. So the new version featuring a mostly Black cast also has its share of nostalgia value, which it smartly acknowledges via some callbacks to the original.
Otherwise, this version directed by Wade Allain-Marcus, which includes Tyra Banks among its executive producers (the actress/model was also originally going to appear in it), doesn’t do much to enhance the underwhelming storyline. It hews fairly close to the original,...

Admit it: we were all a bit worried about how Insecure was going to wrap up all the loose ends during season five. Was Issa Dee (Issa Rae) going to stay with Nathan (Kendrick Sampson)? How is Tiffany (Amanda Seales) doing with life in Denver? Is Molly (Yvonne Orji) going to get her happily-ever-after with Taurean (Leonard Robinson)? What happens with Kelli (Natasha Rothwell)? She was having so much growth! Well, in the season finale on Dec. 26, showrunner Prentice Penny gave us answers to all those questions. Issa and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) chose each other once more, Molly and Taurean get married, Kelli falls in love with a man named Desmond (James Bland) and they're expecting a baby, and Tiffany is struggling in Denver and is pregnant with her second child with Derek (Wade Allain-Marcus).

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details of tonight’s Insecure series finale on HBO.
“Thank you for everything,” Yvonne Orji’s Molly proclaims to Issa Rae’s Issa in the series finale of Insecure on Sunday.
After more than a spell of discord and distance between the treasured friends last year and throughout this fifth and final season, the four words from a now-married Molly deftly encapsulate and navigate the Prentice Penny-directed and Rae-penned episode, titled “Everything Gonna Be, Okay?” Aware of the debate, definitions and competing perspectives that the end of Insecure will incite, Rae, Penny, the writers and team took a long-tail approach with years playing out over the 10th episode of Season 5 through birthday celebrations.
Put it this way — and remember, this last season of Insecure was one of my Top 10 TV series of 2021 — if you thought the “messy sh*t,” to quote Kendrick Sampson’s Nathan,...

“Insecure” star Jay Ellis was fully prepared to become public enemy number one after Sunday night’s episode aired. Titled “Pressure, Okay?!,” the half hour was dedicated to what happened after Lawrence (Ellis) and Condola (Christina Elmore) welcomed their son and all the drama that comes with co-parenting.
“Maybe I can be public enemy number two or three,” Ellis joked, catching up with Variety over the phone ahead of the episode’s debut, as he steeled himself for fan reactions.
“I remember first reading it during the table read and I was like, ‘This is gonna be rough,’” he added. “Like I might go to Mexico or Cuba or something and hide out for a few weeks after this episode because there’s some stuff that’s really hard to come back from.”

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Reunited Okay?!,” the fifth season premiere of “Insecure.”
For the last few weeks, “Insecure” star and co-creator Issa Rae has been focused on toasting the end of the show, basking in the last few moments when the final season is known only to her and the cast and crew behind the show.
“That’s why I’m so bent on celebrating. I’m like let’s celebrate when y’all like it right now. Let’s celebrate the nostalgia before all hell breaks loose,” Rae tells Variety with a laugh.
“People are gonna have many opinions about the second half of the season, I just know they are,” she continues. “And I can’t please everyone, so I just want to live in the positivity as long as I can.”

Mary (Alexandra Daddario) and Ben (Diego Boneta) are the star-crossed black sheep of two powerful families engaged in a centuries-long feud – and they’re about to reignite an affair after many years apart. Their forbidden love triggers the dominoes that will draw in Mukul (Wade Allain-Marcus), Ben’s best friend, who owes him a life debt; Terrence (Justin Chatwin), Mary’s would-be protector-turned-stalker; Wayne (Travis Fimmel), an Aussie hitman with an open mind and a code of ethics; and his free-spirited girlfriend, Barbie (Emmanuelle Chriqui)…
There’s a particular style of filmmaking that resonates with me – the use of film noir and pulpy detective movie tropes in modern films. I don’t know why but the dichotomy of those older tropes combined with modern storytelling, especially quirky comedy,...

Avery Wilson’s haunting rendition of “Strange Fruit” opened this Thursday’s grown-ish and quickly established the imperative that this was the collegiate comedy’s Black Lives Matter episode.
Of course Aaron, who wakes up looking for power to fight, would be protesting against police brutality. But so was Doug, who had previously taken an apathetic stance on the issue; he had a change of heart after the police shot and killed an unarmed Black man and a weaponless Black boy within days of one another. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “A Boy is a Gun,” the fifth episode of “Grown-ish.”
Since its 2018 debut, Freeform’s “Grown-ish” has paid special attention to social issues presented through the lens of today’s college students. With the fifth and sixth episode of its fourth season, the Yara Shahidi starrer recreated last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests and puts Zoey (Shahidi) and her friends at the center of the debate on how to meaningfully support — or critique — the movement.
The special two-part arc kicked off Aug. 5 with a powerful half hour, titled “A Boy Is a Gun.” The episode opened with Doug (Diggy Simmons) out for an early morning jog with earbuds in, entering a convenience store for a quick drink before heading back to his dorm. As the character exits the store, police quickly approach with guns drawn, and a shot rings out.

From the 2010 edition of the Blacklist to Zac Efron’s schedule, Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari’s screenplay for Die in a Gunfight seemed to be getting the fast-track into theaters before seven years of development saw a revolving door of actors and directors changing. It would take almost a decade before cameras started rolling and the person sitting prettiest after the whole ordeal became Collin Schiffli. After two indie films written by frequent collaborator David Dastmalchian, he’s finally got his hands in the Hollywood pie with Lionsgate and a modestly star-studded cast of B-listers to help make his stylistic flourishes look good. And there are a lot of them. Whether or not they work to make this riff on “Romeo and Juliet” a success is beside the point.

On the surface, Freeform’s popular coming-of-age comedy grown-ish could not be more different than HBO’s relationship romp Insecure. The distance between generations and life experiences are definitely significant.
But take a closer look at the way both examine friendship, romance and professional aspirations and listen to the music, you’ll find that these two series definitely share an orbit — and quite a few behind-the-scenes connections. While Insecure is returning later this year for a Season 5 that will be its last, grown-ish, a spinoff of black-ish, is kicking off the second half of Season 3 on Thursday. About an hour into “Black Box,” there’s a twist so good it almost salvages the cheesy B-movie that led up to it. This Blumhouse-produced debut from director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour blends the psychological uneasiness of an amnesiac’s plight with the ravings of a mad scientist, and the full premise suggests a clever marriage of “Total Recall” and “Get Out.” It lacks the inspired lunacy of the former and the fiery social commentary of the latter, but Osei-Kuffour (who co-wrote the movie with Wade Allain-Marcus and Stephen Herman) has constructed

Months before Verzuz had fans declare if they were #TeamBrandy or #TeamMonica, season four of “Insecure” had fans choosing between #TeamIssa and #TeamMolly. However, Emmy voters decided they were fans of both characters as actresses Issa Rae (Issa) and Yvonne Orji (Molly) earned two of the show’s eight Primetime Emmy nominations this year. While Rae has previously been nominated, this marks the first bid for Orji who is up for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. For her submission to the Emmy judges, Orji has chosen the season four finale, “Lowkey Lost,” which finds Molly at crossroads in two of her closest relationships.
In this jam-packed finale, we first see Molly and her boyfriend Andrew (Alexander Hodge) attend a happy hour function for the law firm where Molly works. After coming home Andrew decides to confront Molly about her selfish behavior as it pertains to their relationship. During the middle of their disagreement,...

When I first met John Singleton, I was a newly promoted creative executive at Columbia Pictures under Dawn Steel and Amy Pascal. I was trying to replace myself in the story department with a reader of color.
I’d heard about this kid who was coming out of USC who wanted a job as a reader. When he came in for a meeting, John just wanted to talk
about “Boyz N the Hood.” He was not interested in the reader job. He just wanted to get into a studio to talk about his script and the movie that he was going to direct. He was the most confident neophyte I’d ever seen.
Ten minutes in, I literally forgot all about that reader job. All I wanted to do was get a hold of that script. It took me a while to get it. John already had an agent at CAA.

When Amanda Seales was first cast as Tiffany on HBO's Insecure, she didn't really relate to the character, who seemed "bougie and vapid." But after spending two seasons with Tiffany, the comedian and actor feels very differently. "We've gotten to see more of her softer side," Seales said. "She's not trying to be nitpicky or judgmental. She really is just calling out the truth to her friends, who really make a concerted effort to ignore the truth and the facts. That's an important role to play in a friend circle." Seales admits that she's actually that friend in her social circle. "People don't tell me nothing until they're ready for the truth," she said.
"I didn't shade you. The facts shaded you."
In addition to her role as truth-teller, Seales wears many other hats: DJ, singer, comedian, actress, and game show host. She also holds a master's degree in African-American studies from Columbia University.

Insecure has exposed its fair share of failed relationships and single struggles, but behind all the ho-tation hookups, ex regrets, and even Kelli's epic diner scene, there's always been that one "stable" couple throughout the series: Tiffany (Amanda Seales) and Derek (Wade Allain-Marcus). It seems like Tiffany will take any opportunity to let her friends know she's in a happy relationship. She boasts her blow-job capabilities, throws an over-the-top dinner party for Derek's birthday, and doesn't stop talking about how much she loves her man - we get it, honey! But it's time to look beyond the facade and discuss what we think is really going on between the "strongest" couple on the show.
While we know that there was some sort of indiscretion between them (they reference it throughout the series), Tiffany never shares the exact details with her friends. She accidentally tells the girls that she let Derek...

At the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, TV is invading the schedule in a whole new way. The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.
The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.
This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...
