Warning: contains plot details for Grantchester seasons 1-6 and the first two episodes of season 7.
Grantchester is commonly described by critics and viewers as a “cozy mystery”. This label, especially in regards to its seventh season currently airing in the US on PBS, is misleading. Although so far the season’s emphasis on found family is heart-warming, there are also a number of serious social and political issues underneath the unraveling of its various mysteries.
The crime-solving vicar/priest/nun is a common cozy mystery archetype. In 1950s-set Grantchester, originally based on a series of books by James Runcie, that character started out as Sidney Chambers (James Norton), a vicar with an unusual side hobby and a good friend in police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). Sidney served in WWII but many of his younger parishioners did not, which shaped his interactions. The series veered in a different direction from the books,...

First the good news for Grantchester fans: The ITV & PBS series has been renewed for Season 4. Now the rotten news: They will be the final episodes with star James Norton as the jazz-loving, crime-solving vicar Sidney Chambers as the actor segues to the BBC-AMC drama McMafia.
Norton, whose name has been bandied about as the next James Bond, will return to the Masterpiece series alongside Robson Green, who co-stars as his partner-in-crimefighting Detective Geordie Keating. Al Weaver, Tessa Peake-Jones and Kacey Ainsworth also star. Production begins in June in London for a 2019 premiere.
But Norton’s exit won’t signal the end of the series set in the 1950s in the English hamlet of Grantchester.
“It’s a bittersweet time for Grantchester fans, who will be cheering the return of the series but crushed to say goodbye to James,” said Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton at Wgbh Boston.

Filming has begun in Cheshire on a new 13-episode Cbbc adaptation of Jill Murphy's The Worst Witch.
The books were previously adapted back in the late 1990s for ITV, with a young Felicity Jones, who went on to be nominated for an Oscar for The Theory of Everything, starring as Ethel Hallow, and then again with a new group of young witches in The New Worst Witch in 2005.
Newcomer Bella Ramsey, a member of the Nottingham-based Television Workshop, stars as Mildred Hubble. Bella will also shortly be making her screen debut as Lyanna Mormont in Season 6 of Game of Thrones.
Mildred Hubble is our heroine. From a world outside of magic, she finds herself landing head first, literally, at Miss Cackle’s Academy for witches. The series follows her adventures and friendships as she strives not to be The Worst Witch! Full of flying, magic and plenty of laughs,...

The 47-year-old actress has admitted bosses have reached out to her as they're keen for her to reprise her role as Maureen 'Little Mo' Mitchell, who she portrayed from 2000 until 2006, in the soap but she hasn't been able to take them up on their offer as she's been tied up with other projects. She explained: ''It's not like they haven't asked. But the thing is, I have so much on the table at the moment that it would actually be quite difficult to find a space. So it's about timing.'' However,...
