However, audiences are drawn to this kind of rinse-and-repeat template used in many action films, whether on the big screen with an all-star cast or in cheap VOD offerings. With a story of a dangerous conspiracy, a kidnapped family, shoot-outs, car chases and a tough-guy Bruce Willis performance, that is exactly the crowd that has now discovered The Cold Light of Day more than a decade since it faded from view.

Without major studio tentpoles driving audiences to cinemas, takings in the UK and Ireland remain low compared to pre-lockdown and were up just 1.8% last weekend despite a 27% increase in reopened sites.

But a raft of independent features and the re-release of a fantasy blockbuster may translate into a stronger weekend, as exhibitors hope to see audience confidence grow in returning to cinemas.

Debut feature from the production company is crime drama ‘The Big Ugly’.

UK actor Vinnie Jones has launched 4G Vision, a new $100m production company with Us writer-director Scott Wiper.

The two are working with co-producer Michael Downey and Michigan-based entrepreneur Gregg Gibson Williams, who provides the four G’s in 4G Vision and the financing.

The company’s first project is Wiper’s crime drama The Big Ugly starring Jones, which is set for theatrical and VOD release in the UK and Us through Vertical Entertainment on July 24 and July 31 respectively.

Neeyln (Vinnie Jones) has always been the loyal enforcer for crime boss Harris (Malcolm McDowell) back in London, taking care of problems and people that disrupt his illicit business. When Harris strikes a deal with an old friend – American oilman Preston (Ron Perlman) – they find themselves in the wild hills of West Virginia.

Contracts are signed and the whiskey flows in celebration, but overnight Neelyn’s girlfriend disappears, last seen with Preston’s wayward son Junior. Lines are drawn between family and friends, but nothing will stop Neelyn from getting answers — and retribution.

Exclusive: We hear that Vertical Entertainment has snapped up the domestic and UK distribution rights to The Big Ugly, an action thriller starring Snatch‘s Vinnie Jones, Ron Perlman and Malcolm McDowell. The National Geographic Channel have announced that they have scrapped plans for a scripted TV series based on the 2012 action film "Act of Valor".

In a statement, the network says: "Ngc is unfortunately not moving forward with Act of Valor in favor of other scripted projects we have under consideration that will be announced soon." First announced over a year ago, the series was to be produced by both Relativity Media and the Bandito Brothers.

However, there was no formal agreement in place and reportedly creative differences quickly arose between the pair about how the show should be made. As no deal with the Bandito Brothers was reached, the project is now done and dusted.

The original film teamed a group of real-life active-duty Navy Seals with various actors in the story of an attempted rescue of a kidnapped CIA operative, and was said to be based on an actual Navy Seal mission.

The National Geographic Channel announced today it is no longer moving forward with a scripted TV series based on the 2012 action film Act of Valor. Here's what the network had to say in a brief statement.

"Ngc is unfortunately not moving forward with Act of Valor in favor of other scripted projects we have under consideration that will be announced soon."

The series was first announced in September 2012, when Relativity Media and the Bandito Brothers production company revealed they were developing the movie for the small screen. National Geographic Channel gave the series a green light in October, although creative differences reportedly arose between Relativity and the Bandito Brothers.

The network had a formalized deal in place with Relativity, but the studio had no formal agreement with the Bandito Brothers. In the months that followed, the network, studio and production company all had differing ideas of how the show should be crafted.

Last year, directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh teamed with Relativity Media for "Act of Valor," which featured real Us Navy Seals going out on a mission to recover a kidnapped CIA agent. The film grossed $81 million worldwide on a budget of $12 million. Apparently that was good enough for the studio, because it's now moving forward with a sequel, which will focus on an elite Swat officers. The film was notable for its gritty, realistic portrait of Navy SEALs and how they work, play, and, well, kill. Why was it so realistic? Because the main cast were made up entirely of real, active duty Navy SEALs, which was why the film took years to make, since the “actors” kept having to, well, go to work saving the world. There’s no word if the sequel to “Act of Valor” will feature similar authenticity, but we do know that the topic will now be Swat cops instead of Navy SEALs. With action films it seems that sometimes the story writers feel they don’t have to really try. They seem to think that if they can get some recognisable stars that can put in a charismatic performance then it’s a safe bet that they will have a hit. Sometimes this can pay off, if the action scenes are big enough and the viewers are mesmerised into enjoying the big explosions and gun battles taking place in front of them, they won’t notice that they’ve seen the story many times before. This is the problem with The Cold Light of Day.

Summit Entertainment’s The Cold Light of Day reads as being just another average entry in the mystery-thriller genre – with a slight Hitchockian twist, involving a vacationing young man’s family falling into danger due to the secret history of his otherwise seemingly-benign father.

That is, at least, before you learn that the film features Immortals star and the new Superman in Man of Steel (Henry Cavill), along with longtime fan-favorite acting veterans such as Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver – as the movie’s shrewd anti-hero and calculating villainess, respectively. In that regard, The Cold Light of Day suddenly becomes a film worth your attention.

In the days that lead up to the eventual release of the Man of Steel trailer, we will be getting all the other movies that Henry Cavill will be starring in. So far The Immortals didn’t quite live up to movie audiences’ expectations, so able The Clod Light of Day will. Summit Entertainment & Intrepid Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for Mabrouk El Mechri’s The Cold Light of Day. The movie has Henry Cavill starring in the lead role as a son searching for his family after being entangeled with his father’s espiogonge affairs.

Honestly the movie looks like a pretty good action thriller, and as an added bonus we are getting to see more of Cavill, who looks like he is on the path of stardom. The script was written by Scott Wiper.
