2005 was a huge year for Jared Padalecki. That fall, he would begin his 15-year stint on the smash-hit series Supernatural, but Sam Winchester would not be his only horror role of the year. The Scream-like thriller Cry Wolf, and the FX extravaganza House of Wax may have been snubbed by the critics, but they are hidden gems that show off a different side of the monster-hunting heartthrob.

Horror usually faces an uphill battle with mainstream critics who expect it to produce only crass exploitation. However, rotten reviews sometimes belie provocative stories and visual thrills rarely found in other genres. Case in point: Cry Wolf, with its wild production history, and House of Wax, a frightening feast for the eyes — both of which benefit from amusingly out-of-character performances from Jared Padalecki.

Tim Burton rose during a very peculiar time in popular culture. The terse, depressive adult dramas of the 1970s had given way to the ultra-slick, spectacle-heavy blockbusters of the 1980s as a new generation of adventure films entered the marketplace, helmed by precocious filmmakers who spent their youths in actual film schools. At the same time, the financial and cultural conservatism of the Reagan administration had amplified the voices of rebellious punkers and enterprising artistic weirdos who wanted nothing to do with the commercial world. The odd circumstances -- an increase of money paired with a general antiestablishment malaise -- were just right for anti-mainstream freaks to break into the public eye.

All of a sudden, filmmakers like David Lynch, Tobe Hooper, and Paul Verhoeven could make big hits, and Tim Burton could be embraced by the public at large. Burton, in particular, could not have risen to fame in any other epoch.

Paul Giamatti's role in Planet of the Apes came about when Tim Burton said he looked like a monkey, resulting in an offer to be in the film. Giamatti insisted on playing an ape despite his agents suggesting he play a human, so his face could be seen. The Burton-directed Planet of the Apes film received mixed reviews and was criticized for its depiction of the ape characters.

Released in 2001, Planet of the Apes is a Burton-directed entry into the franchise that sees an Air Force astronaut who lands on a foreign planet where apes are the dominant force against a race of more primitive humans. In addition to Giamatti, the film stars Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, David Warner, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Estella Warren.

One can't say much to defend the clunky script or the bad casting decisions for Tim Burton's 2001 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes." Not only did Burton's film alter the story of the original novel into something far less poignant, but Mark Wahlberg didn't project the "square-jawed space hero" archetype that his character was clearly written as. Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson also didn't fare well as put-upon wilderness dwellers, coming across as dainty weekend warriors who had never been camping before.

Where Burton's film excels, however, is the ape design. The makeup effects by Rick Baker are some of the best in cinema history, looking eerily natural on the faces of previously recognizable actors. Additionally, the ape cast went through extensive movement training and their chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan body movements are impressive and convincing.

The ape cast also did its job with aplomb.

Eventually released in the summer of 2001, the remake of "Planet of the Apes" went through decades of development before director Tim Burton was finally hired. According to the fascinating book "Tales From Development Hell" by David Hughes, 20th Century Fox was set to make an alternative sequel in 1988 titled "Return to the Planet of the Apes" with a screenplay from Adam Rifkin ("The Dark Backward"). Just before pre-production, new studio executives at Fox reportedly butted heads with Rifkin and the project was put on ice. Peter Jackson and Oliver Stone were even considered at one point, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger was attached in the mid-'90s. 

Tim Burton was finally hired to direct at the start of the new millennium, attracting some of the biggest stars and character actors in the business, including Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Giamatti, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Clarke Duncan, and music legend Kris Kristofferson.

Before "Star Wars," "Planet of the Apes" was the defining 20th Century Fox sci-fi franchise of the '70s — never mind that the series technically debuted in theaters in 1968, and is based on a 1963 French novel by "The Bridge over the River Kwai" author Pierre Boulle. The original five films spawned a franchise that includes a live-action TV series, a cartoon, comic books, and a line of toys — and remember, this was long before movie-based action figures were a regular presence in stores.

That was only the beginning. Even though the original "Planet of the Apes" films told a complete story with a beginning and an end, there was no way executives would let a series that successful die ... so, the studio tried to reboot it. Twice. One of those occasions resulted in a huge success; the other one, we barely talk about. Yet, in every evolution, the "Planet of the Apes...

New production shingle Remark Films has come aboard as co-financer on the Keanu Reeves thriller Daughter of God, which Fortitude Int’l, CAA and Cassian Elwes are selling at Afm. Joan Jett is developing a new romantic comedy called Undateable John.

The rocker will executive produce the film under her company Blackheart Films, as well as star in a supporting role.

According to Deadline, the dark romantic film will star Jett as a Venice Beach folk singer who befriends a couple during an AA meeting.

Estella Warren and John Philbin will play the romantic leads, with the cast also including Daryl Hannah, Margaret Cho, Meredith Baxter, Tom Arnold and Shannen Doherty.

Jett last executive produced The Runaways, the film about her all-female punk band in the late '70s. Kristen Stewart played her in the film, which Jett described as surreal.

The rocker also recently released a new album called Unvarnished. She's revealed that she will never retire from music.

According to Us weekly, the two blonde actresses got in an argument at Bootsy Bellows on Friday night (April 5).

It all began when Jaime's assistant's purse went missing at the previous party location, a house in L.A. After following the lead of a "find my phone" app, the two ended at the celeb hotspot and to Estella.

Though the "Kangaroo Jack" star claimed the purse was hers, all of the assistant's items were still inside. In the confrontation, drugs were found in the bag, which spurred police intervention.

A source tells the magazine, "Jaime and her assistant were volunteering for a drug test. They said the drugs weren't theirs. It was this crazy mess."

Actresses Jaime Pressly and Estella Warren reportedly got into a fight in Los Angeles over the weekend and cops were called to intervene.

Pressly and Warren's fight went down on Friday at a birthday party at Hollywood's Bootsy Bellows, according to Us Weekly. The magazine reports that things got "crazy" after Pressly, 35, discovered Warren, 34, with her assistant's purse that had gone missing from an earlier house party. Pressly confronted Warren, who claimed the purse was hers even though Pressly's assistant's belongings were allegedly inside.

The Stranger Inside, starring Estella Warren, Sarah Butler, William Baldwin, makes its premiere screening at the Berlin Film Festival Efm on February 9th and will hit theaters this summer. The official synopsis reads as follows:

With Danish filmmaker Adam Neutzksy-Wulff’s psychological thriller The Stranger Inside currently making the film market rounds, here’s a first look at the flick’s poster as well as an update from star Sarah Butler.

“There’s no trailer yet,” Butler, who starred in 2010’s I Spit on Your Grave and who in The Stranger Inside stars opposite Estella Warren (2001’s Planet of the Apes) and William Baldwin (Backdraft), said of the film, “[but] they had a sales trailer that I saw and went crazy about. It's gonna be so good! I'll let you know as soon as there's anything to report.”

Written, produced (with Michael Aoun and Paul Tilly), and directed by Neutzsky-Wulff, The Stranger Inside filmed earlier this year in Mallorca, Spain, as well as in Copenhagen, Denmark, and New York, New York. The 48-year-old actor will make history as the famous fragrance's first male model.

According to E! Online, Pitt will shoot his first campaign in London this week, Contactmusic reported.

He will reportedly receive a seven-figure sum for the advertisements that will be release near the end of this year.

Aside from Tim Roth’s fantastic performance as Thade, some would say Danny Elfman’s score was the best part of Tim Burton’s ill-fated 2001 re-imagining of Planet Of The Apes, and for those in that camp, La La Land Records has an exciting announcement. A limited edition 3-disc set will include the film version of the score, including source cues and alternates, as well as the original 2001 album that includes a remix from Paul Oakenfeld. The release will be limited to 3500 copies and will be available exclusively through the La La Land website.

Elfman’s work on Planet Of The Apes was unique for him at the time, utilizing heavy percussion and electronic sounds that, until that time, were mostly relegated to his Oingo Boingo days.
