Alex Ross Perry is chasing “Pavements” — that is, the fictionalized version of the band that his very real faux music documentary is about.
The “Her Smell” director helms the movie within a movie about Pavement, the ’90s American alternative group. The official synopsis reads: “‘Pavements’ is a movie about Pavement the band — among other things. The latest film from acclaimed director Alex Ross Perry is a documentary that may or may not be entirely true, may or may not be totally sincere, and may or may not be more about the idea of the band — or any band — than a history of the short-lived, passionately loved, commercially marginal ’90s American alternative group Pavement. This unconventional film about a highly unconventional band incorporates a stage musical, rock biopic, gallery exhibition, archival footage, and contemporary observational footage to create a film as irreducible, uncharacterizable, and entertaining as the band and its music.

"We were big on MTV!" Utopia has revealed an official trailer for the film Pavements, the latest creation from NYC indie filmmaker Alex Ross Perry. This is sort of a documentary, or not, more of a mockumentary, but it's also kind of real, and kind of a fictional film. Does this band actually exist? Is this doc about their return or about them not being a real band? Who knows? Pavements is a doc film about the American indie band Pavement, which combines scripts with images of the band & a musical mise-en-scene composed of songs from their discography. It's a prismatic, narrative, scripted, musical, metatextual hybrid. Showing the band preparing for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while tracking the preparations for a musical based on their songs, a museum about their history, and a big-budget Hollywood biopic. Anchored by Pavement's slacker-sage-sphinx, Stephen Malkmus, the film features actors Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman,...

Today, Utopia released the trailer for Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements, an innovative portrayal of the iconic ’90s indie rock band Pavement. The film blends documentary footage, scripted scenes, and a musical stage play featuring songs from the band’s discography. The fictional biopic within the film, Range Life, stars Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, and Nat Wolff. Out of last year’s New York Film Festival, Slant writer Brad Hanford described it as “Perry’s Cubist portrait finds a fitting balance between reverence and mischievousness.”

Pavements, Alex Ross Perry’s experimental biopic-documentary on the band Pavement, has received its first official trailer.
Arriving in theaters around the US on June 6th, Pavements combines elements of the traditional musical biopic with that of a rock documentary. The film captures all five members of Pavement in 2022 as they launched their reunion tour, their own museum, and a musical based on their catalogue. All the while, Joe Keery stars as frontman Stephen Malkmus in a fictitious documenting of the band’s history, alongside fellow actor/musician performers Jason Schwartzman, Nat Wolff, Tim Heidecker, Zoe Lister-Jones, and more.
This biopic-style presentation of the band’s origins story was captured as Range Life: A Pavement Story, which is both its own separate companion movie as well as the “film within a film” portion of Pavements. Range Life received its first trailer earlier this month, though it does not have a...

Six years since his last solo directing feature, Her Smell, Alex Ross Perry returned to the world of rock in a very different way with Pavements. A tribute to Stephen Malkmus’ group, the film jumps between band documentary, biopic (and the making of the biopic), Broadway-musical creation, museum exhibition, and more to try containing the genius of this influential group. After its fall festival premiere, Utopia will give it a release this year, beginning on May 2, and they’ve now released the first trailer after we got a fun teaser at the film within the film. Along with Pavement members, the film also features Joe Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus, alongside Jason Schwartzman, Fred Hechinger, Tim Heidecker, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Nat Wolff, and more.

Not many artists can assume the impact of their work before it’s released out onto the world, but from Wes Anderson’s early days, he knew how special everything that goes into his films would one day be to the masses. From Max Fischer’s sports jacket and beret in “Rushmore” to Auggie’s camera and pipe in “Asteroid City,” every detail in an Anderson film is intricately and thoughtfully designed, so much so that Cinémathèque Française in Paris has decided to honor the Texas-born auteur with his first career retrospective.
As per The New York Times, Anderson has been carefully storing and keeping track of his films’ paraphernalia ever since Columbia Pictures sold materials off his first feature “Bottle Rocket” without his consent. For two-and-a-half years, curators from Cinémathèque Française and the Design Museum in London pored over a treasure trove of items locked away in Anderson’s storage facility in Kent,...

What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.
Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

Stranger Things star Joe Keery makes his hilariously melodramatic debut as indie rock great and leader of the “slacktivism” movement, Stephen Malkmus, in the new trailer for Alex Ross Perry’s Pavement movie, Range Life: A Pavement Story.

The saga of Alex Ross Perry’s weird, meta Pavement film project continues with the official teaser trailer for a movie titled Range Life: A Pavement Story starring Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Tim Heidecker, Nat Wolff, and more.
Range Life is the biopic aspect of Perry’s hybrid biopic/musical/documentary Pavements. It stars Keery as frontman Stephen Malkmus, telling an embellished story of the band through a self-aware lens, with “For your consideration” jokes abound. Says distributor Utopia in a statement: “On the heels of this year’s Oscars ceremony, there’s already one frontrunner emerging for 2026’s Best Actor from a musical biopic… Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus.”

It's been less than two years since Jesse Armstrong brought the Roy family saga to an end with Succession Season 4, sealing his series' place among the greatest TV shows of all time in the process. But if you thought the prolific writer might be inclined to rest on his laurels and take a bit of a break after dominating last year's Emmy awards, then you're sorely mistaken. Just two months after Deadline exclusively revealed that Armstrong is gearing up to make his directorial debut with an original HBO movie, today it's been confirmed (via a snow-strewn Instagram post) that said film is heading our way this spring — with Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef set to star.
Written by Armstrong himself, precious little is known at this point about what exactly the filmmaker's debut behind the camera will entail, but the rough description shared by Deadline...

The movie that will serve as Jesse Armstrong’s follow-up to Succession has announced its lead actors and is set to begin production soon. It even has a rough premiere date — HBO says it’s set to air sometime in the spring.
Steve Carell (The Office, The Patient) Jason Schwartzman (Bored to Death, Megalopolis), Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night) and Ramy Youssef (Ramy, Poor Things) will star in the film, playing “a group of billionaire friends who get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis,” per the movie’s logline.
What the film doesn’t have yet — or at least, isn’t being revealed yet — is a title. HBO released an image of the first page from Armstrong’s script (see it below), but the title is obscured as if the ink has bled from getting wet.

Director Francis Ford Coppola reputedly spent 40 years making Megalopolis, raising the $120m budget by selling some of his vineyards. Sadly, both time and money could probably have been better spent elsewhere, because the end result falls squarely in the “interesting failure” camp, rather than being the epic masterpiece he undoubtedly envisioned. Still, it’s not without its moments.
The film takes place in New Rome, effectively an alternate version of New York City. Adam Driver plays genius architect Cesar Catilina, who can seemingly halt the flow of time and who has invented a miracle building material known as Megalon, with which he plans to construct a futuristic cityscape.

Few celebrities have been as denigrated throughout their career as Pamela Anderson — and so a sober, wistful character study would seem the perfect vehicle for her to prove her acting chops. The former Baywatch star gives a quite literally glittering comeback performance in Gia Coppola’s latest, The Last Showgirl, a dreamy, understated ode to the underdogs of Las Vegas. After Mainstream and Palo Alto, Coppola jettisons her usual wryly humorous tone in favour of a more pensive mood. But the drama falls slightly short of being the heavy hitter it hopes to be.

Despite rumors that Daniel Craig would star in DC Studios' Sgt. Rock, the actor is no longer attached to the project. Sgt. Rock was set to be a Queer reunion as Luca Guadagnino would reteam with former James Bond star Craig, and Justin Kuritzkes would pen the script. However, Warner Bros., DC Studios, and director Luca Guadagnino might have their eyes set on the star of The Bear to lead their upcoming film, which could enter production sooner than expected.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Craig is no longer attached to star in Sgt. Rock. No details were given on why he seemingly departed the project, though the Hollywood Reporter notes it might have been scheduling conflicts, while sources have alleged Craig might have lost interest after Queer bombed at the box office and failed to score an Academy Awards recognition. Even a Hollywood dynasty gets tired of rewatching their iconic films.
“The Last Showgirl” director Gia Coppola, whose grandfather is iconic auteur Francis Ford Coppola, said during Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s On Me” podcast that she had to eventually watch “The Godfather” with one of her pals since no one in her family was willing to revisit it with her.
Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, spurred two sequels, concluding with 1990’s “The Godfather: Part III.” Yet it took Gia Coppola a few decades to even get to see the first feature.
“I haven’t seen ‘Godfather’ until much later in my life because there was like a lot of pressure and intimidation,” Gia Coppola said, “but also all my family had sort of been a part of it and seen it, so no one really wanted to re watch that with me.

2024 was one of the strongest years for film in recent years. Films like Anora and Conclave took the world by storm. Dune: Part 2 dominated the box office earlier in the year, and Wicked took over at the end. And, for one of the first times in recent history, the Best Picture race truly looks like anybody's game.

Wes Anderson has always managed to conjure up so much joy and wonder in his films, from his early days to his most recent work. There’s always an element of childish imagination and wonder to his films that always helps you fall in love with the characters and the worlds. Beneath that style, however, has always been a maturity to his storytelling, a sense of heartache and subtle sadness that lingers through the colourful worlds. Asteroid City is like so much of Anderson’s previous work, it has the joy and wonder, it has the wonderful colour pallet and style we’ve come to expect and perhaps has deeper meanings and messages than in any of his previous work.

Wes Anderson is one of the most important filmmakers alive today, having produced an extensive and impressive catalog of projects for over 25 years. For his most recent film, The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson has once again paired up with Focus Features – who have distributed his work in the past – and set a release date for its theatrical debut.
Per Variety, Focus Features has landed the worldwide distribution rights to The Phoenician Scheme – nothing new, seeing as they have distributed two of Anderson’s most commercially successful films, Moonrise Kingdom – written by Anderson in collaboration with Roman Coppola – and Asteroid City. Released in 2012, Moonrise Kingdom grossed $68 million and was nominated for a Best Screenplay Academy Award. Asteroid City, the most recent of Anderson’s feature films, was released in 2023 and raked in nearly $54 million at the box office. Since his first film, Writer/Director Wes Anderson has become known for his highly visual combination of bright colors with an older aesthetic. His costuming and set design have a very specific signature that makes it easy to identify when watching a Wes Anderson movie. With him currently working on a new film, The Phoenician Scheme, which reunites him with his muse Bill Murray, we take a look back at all his feature-length films and try to figure out where they rank. How did Jennifer Lawrence react to the nude fight scene in No Hard Feelings? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Yes, Jennifer Lawrence actually found it hilarious. “I didn’t even have a second thought,” she told Variety. “It was hilarious to me.”
The scene in question was one of the standout moments of the film, where Lawrence’s character, Maddie, goes skinny-dipping with a 19-year-old she’s hired to seduce. When some teens swipe their clothes, she doesn’t back down – she chases them and starts fighting, all while completely naked. Her Hunger Games training was on full display, even when things got awkward (she even gets punched in the groin).
Why was nudity suddenly becoming a thing again in comedies? Kristen Lopez, a film critic for The Wrap, explained it as a response to the post-covid world. “Movies are trying to bring back joy and fun after the Covid years,” she said.

After a 13-year break from releasing music as Coconut Records, Jason Schwartzman has returned to his indie rock project, hinting that new music is on the way.
The soft reveal of the project’s revival was made last month, when Schwartzman’s friend and collaborator, Ben Kweller, announced his upcoming album, Cover the Mirrors, with Coconut Records listed as a featured artist on the tracklist.
Then, earlier this week, Schwartzman made like Bob Dylan and joined TikTok, adopting the username @coconutrecordsofficial and posting videos featuring old Coconut Records songs and hashtags like #jasonschwartzman and #nostalgiacore.
One video shows Schwartzman and Kweller on a FaceTime call, with the caption “Writing new Coconut Records on FaceTime be like.” Another video showed a still photo of the two together, with overlaid text reading, “Me and my friend Ben are writing and recording and we learned that if we get 1,000 followers we will be...

The year 2024 was an eventful one for the Coppola family. While the patriarch, Francis Ford Coppola, spent millions of his personal money on his passion-project Megalopolis, his nephews, Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage, delivered memorable supporting performances in the films Queer and Longlegs. But that's not all; Gia Coppola, the only daughter of the late Gian-Carlo Coppola, released her third feature film, The Last Showgirl, to considerable acclaim. This weekend, the drama passed a new domestic box office milestone, even as its star, Pamela Anderson, was overlooked by the Academy.

Though he’s had a busy year having been featured in “The Garfield Movie,” “The Order,” “Juror #2,” and Robert Eggers’ reimagining of “Nosferatu,” Nicholas Hoult still had a few minutes to scour the Criterion Closet for a few of his favorite films and some he hasn’t seen in quite some time. One such choice was Danny Boyle’s “Shallow Grave,” starring Ewan McGregor and Christopher Eccleston in one of their first on-screen roles.
“This movie I haven’t seen, probably, since I was a kid. I shouldn’t have been seeing it as a kid,” said Hoult. “There’s a scene in this, I’m fairly sure, where someone, like, power-drills into someone’s forehead, and it’s seared into my memory. It’s, like, one of the most traumatic things I’ve ever seen on film.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and the entire Spider-Verse franchise revealed that there are an infinite number of multi-verses, all with their own canon events. Unfortunately, our canon event is for Beyond the Spider-Verse to never hit theaters. The third installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy (which began with 2018's Into the Spider-Verse) was already meant to be released in theaters in early 2024, but was delayed indefinitely by Sony. Reports on the movie's status are conflicting, but one of its stars just gave a sour update.
During an interview with Decider, to promote his new movie, Unstoppable, Jharrel Jerome gave a disappointing update on Beyond the Spider-Verse's production. The actor, who plays the Earth-42 variant of Miles Morales, was asked if he had begun recording his lines for the movie yet. "No, I wish," was his honest response. Jerome said that pre-production is still underway on the third installment in the trilogy,...
