Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on August 22nd, reviewing the new film “Between the Temples,” featuring Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane. In theaters beginning August 23rd.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Jason Schwartzman is Benjamin, a Jewish cantor at his temple that had recently lost his novelist wife, who had passed away, and as a result of that event has lost his singing voice. He re-connects in a surprising way with his once-influential grade school music teacher, Carla (Carol Kane), who at the same time – even in her older age – happens to want to complete her Bat Mitzvah, and Benjamin happens to tutor candidates. In their journey together with the religious texts, they find a deeper connection. The “temple” on the other side also has Benjamin leaning into a connection with twentysomething Gabby (Madeline Weinstein), daughter of Rabbi Bruce (Robert Smigel). Everyone is...

Two very different indies circling a cantor and slasher debut in moderate to wide release along with a handful of limited openings from Close Your Eyes to Paradise Is Burning on this late summer weekend with the fall festival season about to kick off.
Sony Pictures Classics launches Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane-starring Between The Temples on 576 screens. Directed by Nathan Silver, written by Silver and C. Mason Wells with Schwartzman as a cantor losing his voice, and maybe his faith. His world turns upside down when his grade school music teacher (Kane) re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student. SPC acquired the thoughtful comedy out of Sundance. Also stars Robert Smigel (Leo), Madeline Weinstein (Beach Rats), and Matthew Shear (Mistress America). It played Sundance and Berlin to strong reviews (sits at 87% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes) and made its New York debut at Tribeca.

When Nathan Silver sat down for an interview with Slant over a decade ago, Mackenzie Lukenbill noted that the director was “predominantly preoccupied with chaos.” The scope of his productions might have grown since then, but Silver’s core sensibility has stayed largely the same. His latest feature, Between the Temples, fulfills all the playfulness with both narrative and form on display in his early-career run of microbudget works.
The stars and scope might make Silver’s biggest production to date feel different than those before it, but the process to achieve his distinctive vision remains deeply collaborative. While Silver shares official screenwriting credit with C. Mason Wells on Between the Temples, the finer shadings of dialogue and character come about through workshopping their “scriptment” with their cast. Cameras roll before the actors have time to memorize their lines, lending scenes the paradoxical sensation of structured improvisation.

Jason Schwartzman as Ben and Carol Kane as Carla, in Nathan Silver’s dark humor yet sweet Jewish comedy Between The Temples. Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics
Jason Schwartzman plays a cantor who has lost his singing voice, his wife and maybe even hope, whose life is changed when his grade-school music teacher, played by Carol Kane, becomes his adult bat mitzvah student, in Nathan Silver’s offbeat, darkly funny but sweet Jewish comedy Between The Temples.
After the sudden death of his wife, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) has lost his singing voice, his enjoyment of life, and even, maybe, his faith. Unable to bear living in the house he shared with his late wife Ruth, Ben now lives with his doting artist mother Meira (Caroline Aaron) and his overeager, real estate agent stepmother Judith (Dolly de Leon) in the basement of their big home. Those who’ve followed Nathan Silver and Chris “C. Mason” Wells’ careers might find themselves bewildered in recent months. Compelling enough that their latest collaboration, Between the Temples, premiered at Sundance with at least three major figures aboard; more notable that a filmmaker long associated with smaller distribution would become a Sony Pictures Classics player; and now names are being dropped on The Tonight Show to applause. (Does Jimmy Fallon actually know Silver’s work? Let’s print the legend.)
Wells’ cinephile record (inasmuch as such a record could exist) is inveterate: currently director of distribution at Mubi, he brings decades of experience as a viewer and industry figure to Temples, one of the most sharply and distinctly written films in recent memory. We discussed Temples‘ creation over Zoom and voice memos (which you hopefully can’t distinguish), distilling a complex project into intention and inspiration.

Carol Kane probably deserves her own closet filled with classic films she’s been a part of, from “Dog Day Afternoon” to “The Princess Bride,” but for now, the Criterion Closet will have to do. In Criterion’s latest closet video, Kane reflects on influences like Bette Davis, as well as past collaborators like John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands, who she describes as a “queen and a goddess.”
“I’m Carol Kane, I’m an ac-tor, and I am so moved to be in this room — this closet — with all these extraordinary films, movies — I don’t know what you’re supposed to call them — but all the creativity. It’s breaking my heart in a good way,” said Kane at the beginning of the video.
As her first pick off the shelf, Kane grabbed “All About Eve” and discussed the effect the lead of the film, Bette Davis, had...

Jason Schwartzman’s been a totemic figure so long it can be hard to separate player from part. Beginning as idol of teenage rebellion Max Fischer in Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore,” the actor’s spent a quarter-century inhabiting numerous types — stuffy writers, disgruntled husbands, mourning widows, drug addicts, a bumping Pi on HBO’s perpetually ill-appreciated “Bored to Death” — that have doubled as progressions of professional versatility and real-life aging.
Like Jean-Pierre Léaud before him, Schwartzman is seemingly now cast for the weight his name and visage can carry. This sequence continues with “Between the Temples,” which finds him playing Benjamin, a cantor whose mourning for his deceased wife finds focus in sessions with Carla (Carol Kane), a fellow widow who decides now’s high time to receive the Bat Mitzvah she missed 60-or-so years prior. A brilliantly shaped scriptment from Nathan Silver and C. Mason Wells makes ideal scene...

Nathan Silver’s Between the Temples takes a stock story––a lonely middle-aged man finds unexpected love––and places it in an unfamiliar context. For one thing, it’s set in the upstate New York town Rhinebeck, depicted as a place where social life revolves around a bar and golf course. Cantor Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) can barely bring himself do his job, suffering a crisis of faith following his wife’s death. He’s lost his voice, literally and figuratively. Driven to suicidal ideation, he lays down in the street at night and hopes to get run over by a truck. He visits a priest for a discussion about his shaky faith. Although he’s on friendly terms with his boss, the temple’s rabbi (Robert Smigel), and his two lesbian mothers, he drinks to cover up his sorrow.

A prolific presence on the 2010s ultra-low-budget indie scene, Nathan Silver has always had a fascination with communal relations, delusions, and make-believe—themes that get a rewarding, sympathetic arrangement in the offbeat comedy Between The Temples, his first feature in six years and most accessible work to date. Jason Schwartzman stars as Ben Gottlieb,...

Megalopolis Trailer: Francis Ford Coppola Aims To Pass The Test Of Time With Adam Driver Sci-Fi Epic
Update: In a uniquely strange turn of events, Lionsgate have now pulled the latest trailer for Megalopolis from all platforms due to controversy surrounding fabricated critic quotes featured within it. In a statement given to Variety, a spokesperson said the following: “Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis. We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
Do you remember that one time the marketing team for Tom Hardy's Krays movie Legend took a two-star review and hid it in the poster, sneakily making it look like a five-star recommendation? Well, no such subtleties are to be found in the latest trailer for Francis Ford Coppola's self-funded sci-fi epic Megalopolis, which sees the man behind The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stoker's Dracula take aim...

Early screenings of Megalopolis drew largely mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (it sits at a disappointing 53% on Rotten Tomatoes) and it appears Lionsgate has decided to lean into that. How? Well, by reminding moviegoers how Francis Ford Coppola's previous movies were received upon release.

If there’s a way to spin some less-than-stellar early word of mouth, this is a pretty unique way to do it. Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious new vision, Megalopolis, is set to bestow upon us in a few weeks and the marketing has chosen to lean into the potentially off-putting quotes from sources who found the film to be underwhelming. Early reviews for Coppola’s self-financed film have been divisive with quotes that say it’s “windy and overstuffed, frequently baffling and way too talky.” However, the critiques have usually paired some positive views, saying it’s also “often amusing, playful, visually stunning, and illuminated by a touching hope for humanity.” The eccentric marketing for the film has now jump started and the marketing department has been tasked by Coppola to “implement specialty marketing, word-of-mouth, and non-traditional theatrical distribution initiatives targeting moviegoers.”

"Imagine today's society as a branch of civilization about to reach a dead end... Is this way we're living the only one that's available to us?" A very good question. Lionsgate + American Zoetrope have unveiled the full trailer for Megalopolis, the controversial and critically panned new Coppola movie opening in theaters this fall. Megalopolis is director Francis Ford Coppola's latest ambitious project, a $100M+ feature that he has been trying to make ever since he first conceived the film in 1979. The basic setup is: an architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. It's not actually NYC, but a giant city like NYC hence the Megalopolis title. The architect's plan is opposed by the mayor, who has other ideas for the city. This premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to mostly mixed and negative reviews (here is mine). The movie's...

Francis Ford Coppola has taken audiences deeper into “Megalopolis” with a second trailer for his new epic film, debuting in U.S. theaters via Lionsgate on Sept. 27.
In the new trailer, which opens with the line, “True genius is often misunderstood,” Coppola shades critics over the years for panning his most legendary movies. From 1972’s “The Godfather” to “Apocalypse Now,” it cycles through excerpts from famous film critics’ negative reviews. (Update: Those quotes turned out to be entirely fabricated.)
“One filmmaker has always been ahead of his time,” says a narrator. The new trailer positions Coppola’s latest epic, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews, as a film that will win over audiences and age well, proving the critics wrong.
Starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight and Jason Schwartzman, “Megalopolis” follows the collapse of a future American empire while referencing the fall of Rome.

Lionsgate released the new trailer to Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed epic “Megalopolis” on Wednesday ahead of its theatrical debut next month.
Written, produced and directed by Coppola, the movie is a decades-long passion project for the “Godfather” filmmaker. It was a big swing, for sure, requiring Coppola to sell off part of his winery to self-finance the film’s $120 million budget. Reviews out of the Cannes Film Festival were unkind, but this trailer uses the film’s divisiveness to its advantage, quoting critics who slammed Coppola’s previous films now considered masterpieces like “The Godfather,” “Apocalypse Now” and “Dracula.”
Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman and Grace VanderWaal star in the ambitious drama. “Megalopolis,” which is full of allusions to the Roman Empire and oversized visual flourishes, pits an idealistic architect (Driver) against a powerful politician (Esposito) for control of a futuristic city.

Finally, audiences are getting more than just a glimpse at “Megalopolis.”
The self-funded feature from auteur Francis Ford Coppola has been rife with on-set production rumors, ranging from a below-the-line exodus to allegations of Coppola kissing extras against their will. The sprawling ensemble film, which debuted at Cannes, is now almost in theaters for the world to witness its unhinged storyline and effects.
Adam Driver leads the film as a pseudo alter-ego of writer/director Coppola. The Oscar-nominated actor plays an architect who envisions saving his corrupt city and transforming the metropolis into a utopia. Meanwhile, the city’s mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) clashes with Driver’s character, just as the mayor’s daughter (Nathalie Emmanuel) becomes romantically entangled with him.
Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, D.B. Sweeney, Jason Schwartzman, Baily Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, and James Remar co-star.

At long last, we are only about a month away from the release of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, set to arrive in North America from Lionsgate Studios and Utopia on September 27 in theaters and IMAX. Ahead of that debut, the new trailer and poster have arrived.
Starring Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman, Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties,...

An eye-catching new poster for Francis Ford Coppola's pricey passion project, Megalopolis, has found its way online (via SFFGazette.com) and the first full-length trailer is set to follow tomorrow.
As you can see below, Adam Driver's character is put front and centre; he's also pictured alongside the tagline, "If You Can't See A Better Future, Build One."
Megalopolis has already been screened for many critics and, as a result, sits at a disappointing 53% on Rotten Tomatoes. In recent weeks, we've also seen the sci-fi fable generate headlines for Coppola's alleged inappropriate advances towards extras while shooting.
Talking earlier this year about what he hopes to accomplish with Megalopolis, the 85-year-old filmmaker said, "My dream would be that this movie could be seen on New Year’s Eve and people would - instead of saying I’m going to lose weight or I’m not going to smoke...

Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, Megalopolis, is set to hit theaters in a matter of weeks and part of the distribution deal of his self-financed film included that he would also take control of marketing. According to World of Reel, the Godfather director has hired the company Utopia to help him out and is said they were told to “implement specialty marketing, word-of-mouth, and non-traditional theatrical distribution initiatives targeting moviegoers.”
This eccentric brand of viral marketing has started to form on social media as the official film’s account amusingly inquired if they could quote a user’s bewildered comment as part of the marketing of the film.
However, in the more traditional manner, the studio has also released a new poster for the film, which you can view below:
Here’s the official synopsis for Megalopolis courtesy of Lionsgate:

Joanna Sternberg has returned with “A Country Dance” for the upcoming film Between the Temples.
The track — dedicated to Sternberg’s friend, Sami Bronowski — is a charming acoustic ditty packed with dazzling lyrics about drinking wine and dancing beneath the stars. “The joke of the song is: I don’t dance, I don’t drink wine, I don’t go outside, and I Definitely do not go out in nature (allergies and insect phobias),” Sternberg said in a hilarious statement. “But I wanted a playful nonsensical song to sing and...

Actors sell an unusual, compelling friendship as a widower reconnects with an old teacher in this thoughtful film
In a sleepy town in upstate New York, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman), the subject of writer-director Nathan Silver’s off-kilter Jewish comedy Between the Temples, isn’t doing very well. His wife, an alcoholic novelist, died a year earlier after slipping on an icy sidewalk. He’s a cantor at the local temple, but lost his singing voice. Schlubby, unshaven, eyes downcast, Ben shuffles through life in a daze, disillusioned with his faith and disinterested in the overt romantic set-ups by his overbearing Jewish moms (Caroline Aaron and Dolly De Leon). “Even my name is in the past tense,” he laments, an incisive complaint-joke in a film full of them. At one point early in the film, co-written by C Mason Wells, Ben lays in front of a truck and asks it to keep going.

Freaks and Geeks brought ‘90s teens some of the most relatable lines on television (bangers like “I don’t need another friend. I’ve got two”) as well as helped launch the careers of budding comedy legends Busy Phillips, Jason Segel and Seth Rogen, to name just a few.
Other famous Freaks and Geeks alums include — take a deep breath — Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, James Franco, Sarah Hagan, Samm Levine, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Rashida Jones, David Krumholtz, Lizzy Caplan, Shia Labeouf, Ben Stiller, Leslie Mann, Mike White, Jason Schwartzman, Ann Dowd and Shaun Weiss.
Now exhale!
Too bad the 1999 show with a nearly-perfect script and cast was slashed by NBC after only a single season, but its tragic cancellation earned it cult classic status. Freaks and Geeks, created by Paul Feig and exec-produced by Judd Apatow, has been on numerous lists of the greatest shows of all time.

Jeremy Matthews writes: At times spectacularly memorable, at others a bit disjointed, Nathan Silver’s Between the Temples is a quiet, funny, uncomfortably idiosyncratic work that leaves its audience to ponder its characters’ journeys. Jason Schwartzman plays Ben, a cantor suffering a crisis after the death of his wife, and Carol Kane plays his elderly childhood music teachers with whom Ben forges an unlikely friendship.

Film at Lincoln Center announced the full slate of Spotlight films for the 62nd New York Film Festival on Wednesday, with several top titles joining the Spotlight Gala screening of “Queer” in the lineup.
Coming to New York this fall will be Jacques Audiard’s Cannes Jury winner “Emilia Perez,” Sundance screenwriting winner “A Real Pain” from director and writer Jesse Eisenberg, and Pablo Larrain’s biopic “Maria” starring Angelina Jolie. All three films are expected to factor heavily in the awards race this year – this assuming “Maria” lands U.S. distribution after it plays the fall festivals.
Those flashy titles join other films such as “Nickel Boys,” “Blitz,” and “The Room Next Door” in the New York Film Festival lineup this year.
For those using this latest round of title designations to guess the Telluride Film Festival lineup, note that “Emilia Perez” is left with no designation as is “Maria”. “The Friend,...

The 2024 New York Film Festival (September 27-October 14) has added more to its already-buzzy lineup, with the latest selections in its Spotlight section announced today. The NYFF Spotlight gala this year, as previously named, will be the U.S. premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s Venice competition title “Queer.”
But new to the NYFF mix are Alex Ross Perry’s “anti-biodoc” (the festival’s words) “Pavements,” about the iconic indie rock band Pavement. That film also premieres in Venice in the Horizons section. A North American premiere of “Holy Motors” director Leos Carax’s self-reflexive short film collage “It’s Not Me,” which bowed in Cannes, also comes to NYFF this fall. Notably, one more “last film” by Jean-Luc Godard, who died in September 2022, “Scénarios” will play NYFF after screening in Cannes. The New Wave master completed the film the day before he died by assisted suicide. “Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: ‘Phony Wars,...

Luca Guadagnino’s new movie “Queer” does not have an American distributor just yet, but it does have a U.S. premiere. The drug-fueled gay romance, starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and based on a William S. Burroughs novella, will screen at the 2024 New York Film Festival following a world premiere in the Venice competition. NYFF announced today that “Queer” will screen as its Spotlight Gala on October 6. And mathing the festival math, a U.S. premiere means “Queer” won’t show up at Telluride but should expect to be added to the Toronto International Film Festival lineup for its North American premiere any day now.
The NYFF announcement provides us with a more detailed synopsis for the film: “Written in the early 1950s yet not published until 1985, William S. Burroughs’s ‘Queer’ has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author...

Exclusive: Director and actress Joan Chen has purchased the life rights of Dr. Qin Huilan and Wei-Lai.
Qin Huilan is a 70-year-old, retired doctor who traveled to Shanghai in 2022 to visit her youngest son, Wei-Lai. As the weather got cold, Huilan borrowed a cashmere coat from her son who surprisingly had a closet full of major designer brands, including Prada. Despite the unspoken taboo subject, the two of them formed a new bond over fashion when Wei-Lai encouraged her to begin posting photos in his outfits on social media accounts that he had created for her.
The following grew quickly, and caught the attention of Ashley Brokaw, an American fashion casting director who is known for her work with Prada. Brokaw direct messaged Huilan via Instagram, informing her that she had spoken with Mrs. Prada, and the two of them would love to have Huilan walk in the 2024 MiuMiu Paris Fashion Week show.

He’s been in (almost) every Wes Anderson movie, is related to Francis Ford and Sofia Coppola and drummed for the Beastie Boys. Now’s your chance to ask him – what’s it like being Jason Schwartzman?
You’d probably most associate Jason Schwartzman with Wes Anderson films as he’s been in seven of the blighters: Rushmore, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch and 2023’s Asteroid City.
You might also be aware that he’s from a famous film family, which includes uncle Francis Ford Coppola, cousins Roman and Sofia and (on the other side) cousin Nicolas Cage.

The past couple of years have been a very good time to be a Pavement fan. The Nineties indie rock band emerged from 12 years of hibernation in 2022 for a stellar, worldwide reunion tour that continues to this day. During their downtime, they assembled a fantastically bizarre jukebox musical based on songs from their catalog, and they promoted it with a trippy pop-up Pavement museum.
As plugged-in Pavement fans knew, all of this activity was captured by filmmaker Alex Ross Perry for a movie, Pavements. It’s premiering at the Venice Film Festival,...

Screen International rounds up the key talking points from this year’s line-up, including the return of stars, the lack of streaming titles and a slight improvement in the number of female directors.
