The "All in the Family" episode "Archie's Brief Encounter" initially aired as a one-hour special, as it dealt with some pretty heavy subject matter. Notably, it was the episode wherein it looked like Edith Bunker (Jean Stapleton) was going to leave her husband Archie (Carroll O'Connor) once and for all. Archie loves Edith, of course, but he has a selfish streak a mile wide, along with many, many other character flaws that require a lot of patience to withstand (although O'Connor himself was a stalwart union man). After its first airing, "Brief Encounter" was presented in two parts.
In the episode, Archie is feeling neglected by Edith, as she is putting in a lot of hours at Sunshine Home, the retirement home where she works. Then, one evening, Archie receives romantic attention from a waitress named Denise (Janis Paige). When Edith catches Archie flirting with Denise, she is incensed and heartbroken.

As Ike Barinholtz approaches the register at Farm Boy Produce, the cashier regards the 48-year-old comic-actor-writer-director with a gimlet-eyed skepticism, as if he’s a shoplifter or worse. “Are you famous?” For a moment, Barinholtz can only smile, revealing the trademark gap in his teeth. The live wire is at a rare loss for words. Finally, he musters, “Do you think I am?”
The question hangs over grocery shopping with Barinholtz. The Chicago native is on a mission to make me, a Brooklyn boy, a chopped cheese — the classic bodega...

Seth MacFarlane (and Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman)'s adult animated comedy is coming home. American Dad!, the long-running TBS series, is poised to make its return to basic cable when its forthcoming 20th season airs on Fox. For fans of the cartoon, the move follows what seems to be a trend for MacFarlane's animated properties, as his original breakout — Family Guy — made a similar jump back to its home network following some time away.
The news was reported in an exclusive to Deadline, which explains the American Dad! jump as something that's long been in the works. We're talking since the early days of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. American Dad! was the first series to debut on Fox's Animation Domination programming block when it launched in 2005, so its return to the network makes a lot of sense. It also makes for a sort of new animation domination for the network,...

Updated, with comments from press secretary: Donald Trump on Monday will make his first visit to the Kennedy Center since he ousted leadership and ensured that he would be chairman of the D.C. arts institution.
While the center has been beset by cancellations of major shows by artists protesting the Trump takeover, the president told reporters that “we have to straighten it out. It is not a good situation. Like everything else in this country.”
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the president “hopes to restore arts and culture that embrace American tradition, not disparage it, as we have unfortunately seen over the past several years.” She said that Trump would do a tour of the center and would “perhaps be discussing some future plays and musicals and theatrical programs that the center will be hosting under his new leadership.”

Rob Reiner and the gang dropped a trailer earlier this week for Spinal Tap 2, a sequel to the influential mockumentary they made decades ago.
It’s a typical teaser trailer, not saying much of anything and trying to drum up excitement without killing the drummer. The dials on a guitar amp are slowly turned to 11 before the final control is cranked to the symbol for infinity. Cue the crunchy guitars of “Stonehenge” while the iconic prop is added to the Spinal Tap logo to form a Roman numeral II. We also get a new tagline: “The end continues.”
No new details about the sequel since Cracked shared some Reiner nuggets last fall, but MeTV reports a little-known fact about the original: Spinal Tap never would have been made without the moral (and financial) support of Reiner’s All in the Family boss, Norman Lear.
It’s not hard to understand...

Issa Rae is working to spotlight the history of Black television with her upcoming HBO docuseries “Seen & Heard,” which she discussed at length in a keynote conversation at SXSW.
The moderator, Rotten Tomatoes’ Jacqueline Coley, described the first episode of “Seen & Heard” as focusing on how studios in the past “used Black audiences” and then “abandoned them as soon as it was convenient.” Rae said she wanted to dive into that history because “it sounds like a conspiracy” on the surface, but producing the documentary proved to her just how that trend had played out.
“It’s one thing to say it. You might have heard someone say that in the history of television and the history of particular networks,” Rae said. “But to have the actual creators, showrunners and writers chronicle the history of that is undeniable. Glenn Padnick, who co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, served as its TV president and was a key player in bringing its crown-jewel sitcom Seinfeld into existence, has died. He was 77.
His reps told Deadline that Padnick died February 25 of complications from Erdheim-Chester disease, a rare illness he lived with for a quarter-century.
Padnick shepherded the Jerry Seinfeld-fronted comedy juggernaut into being and produced and oversaw the NBC series through all nine seasons, making an uncredited on-screen cameo in the Season 4 episode “The Pilot.”

The DC Multiverse owes a lot to Greg Berlanti, given that the producer extraordinaire was responsible for the immensely successful DC TV-verse, which aired on CW. This included Arrow, which kicked off the franchise on the small screen, followed by shows like Supergirl, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and so on.

A female CIA operative leads a dangerous undercover mission. A just-out-of-jail gangster relocates to the sticks. An oil company fixer deals with cartels, corporate intrigue and his chaotic ex-wife. A real-life cowboy, said to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger, has his life more fully dramatized. And a man leading a private prison struggles to maintain order.
What all of these shows have in common – besides being massive hits for streaming service Paramount+ — is the involvement of one man: Taylor Sheridan. While TV remains an unpredictable business, Sheridan has become as close as a talent can get to representing a sure thing, launching one success after another. Sheridan often creates, executive produces and writes most of the episodes of every season. If his shows are cattle, he’s the lone cowboy.

Archie Bunker, as played by Carroll O'Connor, is a fascinating cultural pivot point for American television. He was a lout, a bigot, and perpetually angry, baffled by the social progress being made in the United States in the 1970s. He looked to the past frequently, and reminisced about how life used to be simpler; it's no wonder that the theme song to his show, "All in the Family," was called "Those Were the Days." Bunker was not a good person ... and yet continuously showed vulnerability and heart. Nostalgia is all well and good, but one might not want to vaunt the past; it wasn't always better for everyone. It's no wonder that "Family Guy" regularly lampoons "All in the Family" with such verve.
As "All in the Family" progressed, Bunker proved again and again that he was capable of compassion, and could — if he was determined — rise above his prejudices.

Shonda Rhimes has resigned from her role as Treasurer of the Kennedy Center after President Trump appointed himself the arts organization’s new chairman, IndieWire has confirmed. Per Trump, a unanimous vote by the board he installed has now made it official.
Last week, Trump said he intended to fire several board members, including chairman David Rubenstein, who was meant to hold the position through 2026 as part of a six-year term.
Rhimes’ resignation follows musician Ben Folds, who served as artistic director to the National Symphony Orchestra, and Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter, also exiting from the institution. Rhimes was appointed to the board of trustees by President Obama.
When reached by IndieWire, Rhimes had no additional comment.

Everyone seems to love Clean Slate, the sitcom with “a trans story right when it’s needed the most.” But comedian George Wallace had a very different idea in mind when he first pitched the show to legendary producer Norman Lear — he wanted to update classic ‘70s sitcom Sanford and Son.
“Sanford and Son makes everybody feel good,” Wallace told The Hollywood Reporter. “Just hearing the music, already that smile comes on your face. So I said, ‘Let me go to Norman Lear.’ I had known him for 30 years, and I said, ‘I want to reboot Sanford and Son.’ He says, ‘Are you kidding? You can’t do that show. Get a twist and come back.’”
Lear knew a little something about Sanford and Son — he developed the show as NBC’s answer to All in the Family. While the sitcom doesn’t show up much in syndication these days,...

Clean Slate emerges as a gentle comedy steeped in familial ties and contemporary social musings. In a nod to television heritage, the show carries echoes of a storied past, its connection to the legendary Norman Lear lending a subtle air of historic significance. One finds a graceful collision of traditional family values and modern societal discourses as Desiree Slate returns to her roots in Mobile, Alabama.
This reunion, centered around estranged bonds mended by time, unfolds amid a backdrop where cultural idiosyncrasies of the American South paint a vivid picture of a community steeped in both warmth and reserved tradition.
The narrative moves with a soft yet confident pace, opting for humor that gently dances around potentially contentious issues. The creative spirit of the project shines in its delicate approach to portraying change, presenting topics with a light touch that stirs empathy and thoughtful reflection.

For the past 20 years, Laverne Cox has dreamed of starring in a scripted series she created. With Prime Video’s “Clean Slate,” that dream is finally coming true. But getting to this point was far from an easy process.

The first episode of this new Prime Video comedy is preceded by a quote from its late, great executive producer, sitcom giant Norman Lear: “The laughter I’ve enjoyed most is laughter that has brought numbers of us together.”

If you follow the human interest verticals of your news sources, you spent last year reading about children choosing to go “no contact” with their parents. Some TV creators must have had familial estrangement on their minds well before that, because 2025 has kicked off with this story being foundational to multiple new sitcoms. In Going Dutch, a father is thrown back into the life of the daughter who went no contact with him three years ago; they’re both in the military, and the father’s commanding officer knows about their tense relationship and is intentionally messing with him. In Shifting Gears, a daughter descends on her father after their contact with each other tapered off upon the death of her mother; the daughter’s marriage is falling apart, and she and her children need somewhere to live. Now, in Clean Slate, a father receives an email from the person...

I really love it when streamers tell stories that aren’t carbon copies of what’s come before. That’s why I’m excited for Prime Video’s new comedy series, “Clean Slate” dropping Thursday, Feb. 6. The show follows Desiree (Laverne Cox) as she comes back to her small Alabama hometown to reconnect with her old-school dad, Harry (George Wallace). The catch? He doesn’t know that she transitioned. There’s bound to be a lot of heart and laughs (and a little bit of chaos) as these two unpack the unexpected reunion and all the baggage that comes with it. Here’s everything you need to know about “Clean Slate.”

January has finally ended, which means there's a whole new month of television shows to enjoy on streaming services. While many of the most popular shows of the moment continue airing new episodes weekly, February 2025 brings along with it a fresh crop of new releases. It might be a much shorter month, but that doesn't mean there's fewer shows to binge-watch!
The first week of February 2025 happens to be a pretty busy one, with Netflix dropping two highly anticipated series, including the based on a true-ish story miniseries Apple Cider Vinegar and the latest season of the fan-favorite romantic drama series Sweet Magnolias. On top of those two surefire Netflix hits, Prime Video and Tubi both debut new comedies you have to check out.

If you're a fan of the macabre, then Stephen King movies are probably right up your alley. However, this time we won't provide news about his scary films. In fact, there's nothing quite scary about Stand by Me, except that it offers a surprisingly honest look at childhood and the good and bad things that come with it. For fans of this departure from King's usual hokum, then you have to hurry and see Stand by Me before it leaves Netflix on February 1.
The coming-of-age movie will depart the catalog and will disappear for a while from the streaming-verse. Note that other titles leaving the streamer on February 1 include Snowpiercer, Zero Dark Thirty and 2021's Dune. If you haven't heard about the 1986 movie, just know that it's worth paying for a Netflix subscription even if prices are ridiculously high. Yes, it is that good.

Laverne Cox is addressing President Donald Trump’s series of executive orders targeting the trans community while promoting her upcoming Prime Video series Clean Slate, a comedy about an art dealer (Cox) and her father (George Wallace) who rebuild their long-estranged relationship when she returns home to Mobile, Alabama, as a trans woman.
On his first day in office on Jan. 20, President Trump signed an executive order stating that the government will only recognize two genders, male and female, going forward; ordering the transfer of trans women to male prisons and a stoppage on gender-affirming treatment for incarcerated individuals, noting the attorney general shall ensure “no federal funds are expended for any medical procedure, treatment or drug for the purpose of conforming an inmate’s appearance to that of the opposite sex.” One week later, a second order was issued to ban transgender troops from openly serving in the military.

When a popular television show becomes grist for spin-offs, showrunners and their writers are immediately faced with the challenge of expanding a beloved universe in a manner that caters to new viewers without ticking off fans of the existing series. This wasn't always a tricky proposition. When Norman Lear began spinning off shows from "All in the Family" in the 1970s (the first being "Maude"), viewers weren't wildly concerned with canon; additionally, the characters who anchored the new shows were far enough removed from the Bunkers that the writers didn't have to worry about mucking up backstories. As long as the laughs were big and plentiful, their audience would forgive just about anything.
Television in 2025 is much different. Fans fixate on every single detail, and will absolutely cry foul if a character behaves contrary to how they've been portrayed in the past -- or, worse, if a previously established detail gets fudged.

Why in the name of all that’s funny do American producers try to adapt British sitcoms for U.S. audiences? The easy answer: Sometimes, it works. Norman Lear’s All in the Family and Sanford and Son were huge hits based on U.K. comedies, while the American version of The Office is arguably the most successful (or at least the most imitated) sitcom of the century.
But alongside those successes are a series of miserable failures that got lost in translation. Here are five examples of failed American versions of classic British sitcoms…
1 Fawlty Towers
In 2000, the British Film Institute ranked Fawlty Towers first on its list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, and Channel 4 had Basil Fawlty number two on its list of the 100 Greatest Television Characters. With its simple premise — an uptight dolt runs a dysfunctional hotel — Fawlty Towers was an obvious choice for an American update.

They don’t make ‘em like Love American Style anymore, the ‘70s anthology show that featured out-of-work stars in one-off stories based on the theme of romance. The comedy lasted five seasons but didn’t make much of an impact — unless you count the episode, “Love and the Television Set.” Teenage Ronny Howard, known to viewers as The Andy Griffith Show’s Opie, played a ‘50s kid looking for love. That half-hour episode became the de facto pilot for Happy Days, a show whose 11 seasons more than doubled the run of Love, American Style.

Not all Stephen King fans might be aware of the backstory to Stand by Me, the adaptation of his novella The Body, which was part of his 1982 collection Different Seasons. Perhaps some casual movie fans might not even know this film was based on his story. Many of Stephen King’s books have been adapted for the screen, and while he liked most of them, Stand by Me stood out as one of the author’s favorites alongside Shawshank Redemption. King has repeatedly spoken about the emotional impact in several interviews, stating that it was very much a personal story. In fact, it was so deeply personal that when he saw the finished film, he was overwhelmed with emotion and needed a few minutes to gather his thoughts.

Clean Slate is a new comedy series on Prime, and is one of the final shows executive produced by the legendary Norman Lear. The show stars Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) as Desiree, a proud trans woman, who returns home to Alabama, where her estranged father, Harry (played by George Wallace), is an 'old school' owner of a local car wash.
The series will follow Desiree and Harry as they rebuild their relationship following several years of estrangement. While the show is most certainly heartfelt, there are plenty of comedic moments and a strong cast of supporting characters, including Jay Wilkison (Rabbit Hole) as Mack and Phillip Garcia (Sprung) as Miguel, along with Telma Hopkins, D.K. Uzoukwu, and others.

One of producer Norman Lear’s final projects will be released on Prime Video next month.
Clean Slate, starring Laverne Cox and George Wallace, follows a father and daughter working to repair their relationship after not speaking for more than two decades. Wallace stars as Harry, an old-school, outspoken down-South car wash owner who quickly has to get his pronouns up to par when his estranged son shows up on his doorstep in Mobile, Alabama, as Desiree (Cox), a proud trans woman.
What was supposed to be a short visit for Desiree turns into a more extended stay when the art gallery she ran in New York City loses funding and she becomes roommates with her dad. Her relationship with Harry isn’t the only one Desiree finds herself navigating, as her identity causes some whispers in the church and a bit of strife between her and her closeted best...

America’s Senior Sweetheart wasn’t as nice as everyone thought, according to All in the Family and Man on the Inside star Sally Struthers. At least Struthers waited until Betty White passed away before she put the Golden Girls star on blast.
