Since its surprising theatrical run, The Substance has established itself as an instant classic. It showcased incredible horror scenes and brilliant makeup effects and opened the door for other body horror films in the years ahead. Movies like Together have been picked up by major studios after The Substance‘s success, and there will undeniably be more body horror flicks in production because of Fargeat’s masterpiece. While we wait for those movies, let’s check out some of the great horror, comedy, and drama films that both inspired The Substance and will appeal to fans of the movie.
1. American Mary (2012) Directed by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska
While The Substance is a little heavy on its themes around plastic surgery to maintain youth, American Mary never hesitates to make this part of the text. The indie horror film might not feature great performances, but it does nail a campy, hedonistic...

More than 23 years after David Lynch facilitated her big break, Naomi Watts was ready to serve as the auteur’s muse once again.
Following Lynch’s death at age 78 in January, the 2x Oscar-nominated actress recounted her last time seeing the Twin Peaks creator during a lunch in late November with him and fellow Lynch collaborator Laura Dern.
“We had a beautiful lunch at his house,” she told the Los Angeles Times. “I knew he’d been unwell but he was in great spirits. He wanted to go back to work — Laura and I were like, ‘You can do it! You could work from the trailer.’ He was not, in any way, done. I could see the creative spirit alive in him.”
After Lynch died of cardiac arrest, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease listed as an underlying cause, Watts said his loss was “so deeply, deeply upsetting.”

The beginning of 2025 saw the tragic loss of David Lynch, a one-of-a-kind filmmaker whose unique vision and groundbreaking filmography have shaped a generation of moviegoers and cinephiles. In light of his passing, David Lynch enthusiasts, both old and new, have been revisiting the director's vast back catalog, which consists of various shorts, television projects, and feature films. In March, Paramount+ will be home to two more of Lynch's works for viewers to enjoy, with his 1984 adaptation of Dune and his seminal work Mulholland Drive hitting the streaming platform on March 1st. Both movies represent different highs (and lows) in the director's storied career and speak to his unmatched influence on genre films that continues to this day.
David Lynch's Dune was the director's first big studio production, and the process of bringing Frank Herbert's ambitious and sprawling novel to life was no easy feat for the filmmaker. A...

One of the most crucial elements of a movie is making the audience feel affected by its ending. The best conclusions in cinema are the ones that have a grand sense of ambiguity, or the idea that things are left open to further interpretation. While movies traditionally leave things on closed notes, many have taken risks and given viewers endings that either don't completely answer everything or end things abruptly in a good way.
These movie endings have become legendary because of their shocking cuts to black, haunting final shots, or other factors that cause audiences to become speechless. Even though many questions are raised, viewers get the chance to piece things together and find an understanding of what the ending means. Between Inception,American Psycho, and The Thing, these movies and their final moments are made better by the ambiguity applied to them.

Rough Cut Fan Club designed a shirt for David Lynch‘s Mulholland Drive to benefit Dream Center, a Los Angeles charity helping provide essential relief to those affected by the wildfires.
In light of the filmmaker’s passing yesterday, the company has also decided to make a donation to David Lynch Foundation.
“We knew when we heard about the fires ravaging the LA area we needed to do a charity drop, and this film was an obvious choice. Then, the day before we dropped, the great David Lynch left this mortal coil,” Rough Cut explains.
“We are not interested in profiting off the death of any director, but because this is a shirt for charity we think the design is still appropriate. The one change is that all proceeds from this shirt will go directly to The David Lynch Foundation, in his memory.

Mulholland Drive star Naomi Watts joins the legions of those paying tribute to the great David Lynch, whose death has been a devastating blow to lovers of all things strange and unusual. Yesterday evening, Watts took to Instagram to share both her grief and gratitude for the inimitable director, thanking Lynch for putting her "on the map" when he cast Watts in Mulholland Drive and subsequently kickstarted her career over two decades ago.
Those who are easily brought to tears (I proudly count myself among this group) should brace themselves when reading Watts' farewell to her longtime friend and mentor, as it perfectly evokes the sorrow we've all been feeling. "My heart is broken," Watts began. "My Buddy Dave ... The world will not be the same without him." Steven Spielberg, Nicolas Cage, Naomi Watts Remember David Lynch: ‘Brave, Brilliant, and a Maverick’

Numerous leaders in entertainment, celebrities, and former collaborators have mourned the death of David Lynch, the multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker whose spectacularly unnerving work fused dreams and nightmares and forever changed the landscape of movie-making.
Steven Spielberg, who featured Lynch in his semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, remembered him as “a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade. He added, “The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”

“My heart is broken. My Buddy Dave…” began Mulholland Drive star Naomi Watts on Instagram about the death of that movie’s filmmaker David Lynch.
“The world will not be the same without him. His creative mentorship was truly powerful,” she wrote.
“He put me on the map. The world I’d been trying to break into for ten plus years, flunking auditions left and right,” said the British-born actress, whose career took a 180-turn skyward following her turn the 2001 L.A. noir movie that Lynch morphed from a deep-sixed ABC TV pilot into an Oscar-nominated movie from Universal.
Watts played the doppelganger roles of Betty Elms and Diane Selwyn alongside co-stars Laura Harring, Justin Theroux and Robert Forster.

David Lynch is one of the most prolific — and certainly singular — American directors of the last 50 years, and his death was met Thursday with innumerable tributes and memories from collaborators like Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks”), Naomi Watts (“Mulholland Drive”) and Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”).
And while his body of work speaks for itself, the outpouring of support and grief and celebration of Lynch’s life showed just how many people he touched in his decades as one of Hollywood’s most unique voices.
Below, TheWrap has rounded up a number of memorable moments of Lynch throughout the years, including taking “Wild at Heart” to the Cannes International Film Festival in 1990 with stars Laura Dern, Nicolas Cage, Willem Dafoe, Diane Ladd and Isabella Rossellini; celebrating Dern’s Hollywood Walk of Film induction with Mark Ruffalo in 2010; and working to film “The Straight Story” in 1998.

I was born into David Lynch's world, and in some ways, I mean that literally. I was born and raised in Philadelphia, a metropolis where Lynch lived and worked and felt inspired by local artists and the city's patina and grunge. While my mother was still recovering from my birth in the hospital, she watched the episode of "Twin Peaks" where — spoiler alert, I guess? — Leland Palmer (Ray Wise) stuffs the dead body of Maddy Ferguson (Sheryl Lee) into a golf bag, horrifying any nurses who walked into the room at inopportune moments. This is all to say that, over the past 30-odd years, I've grown up in a world where Lynch — a director and visionary who passed away on January 16, 2025 — has always been a part of the conversation.
This probably makes it all the more surprising that I didn't watch "Mulholland Drive" for the first time until I was 30 years old,...

It may not have the same cultural cache that it does today, but The Shield is easily one of the best drama shows of all time, and certainly one of the most influential. While HBO had begun to dominate the prestige television landscape at the beginning of the 21st century thanks to acclaimed programs like Oz and The Sopranos, The Shield instantly proved that FX was a network worth taking seriously, as the series took on challenging hot button issues and routinely pulled in exciting guest stars. While highly celebrated actors like Glenn Close, Forest Whitaker, Anthony Anderson, and Laura Harring all popped up in supporting roles, the final season of The Shield featured a breakout role for Kyle Gallner.

The DVD of David Lynch's 2001 mystery "Mulholland Drive" came with a mystery of its own. Those who know David Lynch know that he loathes talking about his movies, and staunchly refuses to answer bothersome questions about their meaning. This is the man who famously declared his 1977 classic "Eraserhead" to be his most spiritual film. When asked to elucidate, Lynch simply said "No." For Lynch, all the answers are up on the screen. Any commentary is not only redundant but distracting; why watch a movie looking for an interpretation when one can simply experience it raw? This is why Lynch has never provided a commentary track for any of his movies, and why he hates chapter stops on DVDs and Blu-rays. Sit in a dark room, he says, and let the film enter your mind unadulterated.
This is why the paper insert in the 2002 "Mulholland Drive" release is so baffling.

While many companies were affected by shortages brought on by Covid-19’s disruption, some may not be top of mind when it comes to everyday commerce. Enter filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, whose latest work Spermworld depicts the evolution of sperm banks. There’s been high interest from potential parents for receiving the male sperm, and the limited regulations of in-person sperm banks (e.g. donors can’t give their sperm to more than 25 or 30 families) have made donors run their business online. After contributing to the New York Times article The Sperm Kings Have a Problem: Too Much Demand, Oppenheim has now crafted a mind-boggling moving-image companion piece with backing from the outlet.

Not everything in a given horror series has to be a stone cold classic. That being said, some series entries don’t get the fair shake they deserve. For example, there are some absolute bangers in the later entries of series like Puppet Master or Child’s Play that are overlooked thanks to entries in, say, Leprechaun or Hellraiser that would make you swear off sequels be it direct to video or not. Some series, like the focus of today’s entry, probably didn’t need or deserve sequels but that never stopped an executive from being greedy before. A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. To date, there have been four notable live-action filmed renditions of the Marvel Comics character, the Punisher. The character, also known as Frank Castle, saw his family murdered by an overzealous and vengeful gangster, and soon thereafter became the world's most deadly vigilante. Imagine Batman with bloodthirst and guns, and you'll have a good idea of what the Punisher is all about.
It's worth mentioning right away that in recent years, the Punisher's skull logo has become a source of controversy. In about 2012, the skull began to be co-opted as a positive symbol of fascist violence. It was seen on the police cars during Black Lives Matter protests and adopted as a symbol of a "Blue Lives Matter" countermovement, used to support police brutality. Eventually, Marvel Comics had the Punisher confront some of his cop disciples, saying out loud that he is not a role model and that cops should hold themselves to higher standards.

The jaw-dropping ending of Mulholland Drive delivers more questions than answers, but it's a fascinating study of the psychology behind dreams. David Lynch's 2001 film follows two strange women who cross paths in Hollywood: one is an aspiring actress full of dreams and promises, and the other has just barely escaped a lethal car crash and lost all her memory. Together they uncover the ugly truth about the beauty and fame that surrounds them and develop a romance capable of altering reality.
David Lynch's surrealist storytelling comes in handy since the majority of the movie takes place inside a dream. Mulholland Drive is a thriller at its core but often flirts with horror elements and offers an absorbing romance that feels like a dangerous game, establishing a distinctive neo-noir atmosphere.
With its nonlinear narrative and its vast array of characters,...

As any home media hunters of a certain age know, securing a VHS copy of David Lynch's 1977 debut feature "Eraserhead" was a Herculean task. Cassettes were rare, and the ones the public could access were typically living in libraries or video stores who would not sell them to you. If you were willing to shell out 80 to 100, in 1992 dollars, then maybe you could cut a deal. Some resourceful collectors could scoop up a well-worn Japanese LaserDisc, but only the more extreme collectors owned LaserDisc players. "Eraserhead" was, for many years, effectively out of print.
After the release of "Mulholland Drive" in 2001, however, Lynch began examining new types of media as well as the ever-growing DVD market and decided that it was high time to keep up with an evolving landscape. In 2002, Lynch -- owning the rights to "Eraserhead" as well as his early short films -- remastered and released a pair of tiffany DVDs,...

Billy Herrera, a successful architect and the title character of the newest iteration of Father of the Bride, is played with terrific comic understatement by Andy Garcia. He has some of the gruffness of Spencer Tracy in the hit 1950 movie of the same name — the first screen translation of Edward Streeter’s novel — and none of the mugging that Steve Martin brought to the 1991 remake. But like both their characters, and pretty much every dad in every American comedy ever made, Billy needs enlightening about the way things are in the world today. When he says, “I came to this country with nothing,” which he does every chance he gets, his wife and daughters roll their eyes and wait for the moment of self-mythologizing grandeur to pass.
The shocking reality that kick-starts his awakening is news that his older daughter is getting married...

The wedding industrial complex has intensified since novelist Edward Streeter wrote his wryly observational satire “Father of the Bride” in 1949. So, too, has the titular patriarch’s panic that his daughter’s nuptials will expose him as a substandard provider. Director Gary Alazraki’s uneven adaptation — the third in seven decades after Spencer Tracy and Steve Martin reached for the migraine medication — casts Andy Garcia as the beleaguered patron whose ego outshines his child’s simpler desires. Audiences looking to shed a tear need not RSVP.
Garcia plays Billy Herrera, a Cuban exile — not immigrant, he stresses — who has built himself an upper-class life in Miami. Decades ago, he scaled the ladder of success from carpenter to architect. That struggle is the bedrock of his personality, and by the fifth time screenwriter Matt Lopez has him bring it up, Billy’s family looks ready to hit him with a hammer.

We might not have gotten a new David Lynch movie at Cannes this year, but we will still always have the rest of his incredible filmography. Among one of his best is "Mulholland Drive," the 2001 neo-noir that famously begins unraveling into a surrealist nightmare. The performances of frequent Lynch collaborators Naomi Watts and Laura Harring are arguably the reason why the movie has gained such high praise -- their chemistry, both platonic and romantic, along with the seamlessness of their third-act changes is just too good.

David Lynch never goes out of style. Ask any artist who’s worked with him, from Laura Dern to Patricia Arquette, they’ll tell you the Missoula native and Eagle Scout is a master filmmaker and an empathetic collaborator, with anyone he hires willing to follow his strange star down the rabbit hole together. And so, more than 20 years later, we’re still talking about movies like “Mulholland Drive.” While actresses like Dern, Naomi Watts, Grace Zabriskie, and Sheryl Lee are often thought of as Lynch’s muses, there’s one woman without whom the entire David Lynch universe wouldn’t be the same: Rebekah Del Rio.
The three-octave singer from Chula Vista, California, famously renders Roy Orbison’s wallowing breakup ballad “Crying” as a glorious a capella epic in Spanish, “Llorando,” during a pivotal “Mulholland Drive” scene that serves as the bridge from fantasy to reality nightmare. At the...

Last October marked 20 years since David Lynch’s masterpiece “Mulholland Drive” first hit theaters, but in some circles, the celebration still hasn’t ended.
Film at Lincoln Center has announced a new 35mm presentation of the film, accompanied by a concert from singer-songwriter Rebekah Del Rio to commemorate the film’s belated anniversary. The screening will take place at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City on Wednesday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m.
“Mulholland Drive” is widely considered the high point of David Lynch’s later career (although some fans of “Twin Peaks: The Return” might disagree). It stars Naomi Watts as Betty Elms, an aspiring actress who moves to California with big Hollywood dreams. She soon encounters a woman with amnesia (played by Laura Harring), and the two quickly become entangled in an elaborate mystery. This one delivers the 4K ‘experience’ — and David Lynch’s mesmerizing visuals and Angelo Badalamenti’s seductive music once again pull us into a different dimension. Four or five viewings down the line, the ‘storyline’ of this TV show-become-feature film is if anything less understandable. But it’s no less pleasantly weird — we can’t keep our eyes off of Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. My ‘quality’ section debates a question I’m getting more often: are 4K discs worth the upgrade?

There are few films quite as beloved—or as baffling—as David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive.”
After being praised as the best film of the 21st century in a BBC critics poll in 2016, “Mulholland Drive” took the top spot on the “Best of the Decade” lists from Film Comment, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca), Reverse Shot, and IndieWire. Now, ahead of its 20th anniversary on Oct. 19, it’s time to uncover many of the mysteries behind the haunting 2001 film.
The plot seems simple enough: a young woman, played by Laura Harring, has amnesia following a car crash in the Hollywood Hills. Naomi Watts is her naive roommate, an aspiring actress. But that premise — just like the vehicle careening off the twisting, paved Mulholland Drive — eventually falls by the wayside, giving way to a debate over gender identity, the porous nature of reality, and the personal ramifications of fame.

Restoration
The 20th anniversary 4K restoration of David Lynch‘s iconic surrealist mystery-drama is to get a home entertainment and limited theatrical release from Studiocanal and the Criterion Collection.
20 years after the film’s world premiere at Cannes in 2001, the restoration, supervised by Lynch himself, premiered at the Cannes Classics selection earlier this year. In 2001, Lynch won best director at Cannes, an award he shared with Joel Coen for “The Man Who Wasn’t There.”
The film will be released on home entertainment, formats including a 4K Uhd limited collector’s edition with a new artwork by Krzysztof Domaradzki rolling out across Studiocanal’s territories in November, with additional theatrical releases planned in France and Germany.
“Mulholland Drive” stars Naomi Watts (“The Impossible”) in her breakthrough double-role as well as Laura Harring (“Love in the Time of Cholera”), Justin Theroux (“The Girl On The Train”) and Melissa George (“Hunted”).

The cinema of David Lynch is a Pandora’s box of desires and beguiling images. Forged through his first feature Eraserhead, the stark black and white images of the feature merge with the ominous sound design to create an enchantingly nightmarish tone – one that Lynch has come to be defined by. The filmmaker’s work outside the medium in sculpting, literature and music too suffices itself into his films as rich tapestries of complex human emotions and abstract expressions.
Throughout Lynch’s filmography there are highly surreal moments that transcend simply being defined in the horror or thriller genre. These scenes and images rest more specifically in the surrealist movement of the 1920s, later conjured into cinema by Louis Buñuel’s Un chien andalou. Like the intoxicating images of the surrealist artists, Lynch’s cinema is continuously exploring the connections that define human interaction and feeling. Whether it is the...

Before Netflix brought Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle to the digital streaming masses, there was Ray Stevenson. Before Stevenson there was Thomas Jane, and well before that, there was Dolph Lundgren, but I digress. Marvel’s most brutal character, The Punisher, has been beloved by fans ever since dawning the white boots on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #129. The character has had a few cinematic adaptations over the years and two of them are receiving a 4K Ultra HD combo pack release from Lionsgate.

Arriving on DVD tomorrow is the remake of Inside from director Miguel Ángel Vivas and co-writers Jaume Balagueró and Manu Díez. Based on the original 2007 film by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, this iteration of Inside follows a bereaved expectant mother named Sarah (Rachel Nichols) who is being tormented by an unknown woman (Laura Harring) who will stop at nothing to get her hands on Sarah’s unborn child.
Daily Dead recently conducted a Q&A with Vivas about Inside, and he discussed what initially drew him into the project, his positive experiences working with his strong female leads, the film’s ambitious finale, and more.
What was it about this project in particular that you connected with as a storyteller and made you want to take it on as a directorial project?
