It is just about an immutable truth that Michael Caine is doing God-level work as Ebenezer Scrooge in "The Muppet Christmas Carol." The 1992 adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic is, partly because it arrived in theaters soon after the tragic and untimely passing of Muppet creator Jim Henson, a surprisingly straightforward take on the holiday story of a grouchy and rich old Londoner who gets a revival of the human spirit after experiencing ghostly visions. With Henson no longer in the mix, the Muppets themselves (especially those originally performed by the great man) take something of a back seat in the film.
Of course, if you are making an adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," focusing on the performer playing Scrooge does make pretty obvious sense. And Michael Caine, by that point an Oscar winner for his supporting work in Woody Allen's "Hannah and Her Sisters," seemed then and now...

It has been a full couple of weeks for Robert Eggers. Nosferatu, his Gothic remake of the 1922 classic, is leading the box office with $156 million so far. A few days ago, cinephiles got word that he's staying in the Universal monster motif with Werwulf coming next. (No relation with the foible-ridden "Dark Universe.")
Now comes the announcement that the cerebral moviemaker is going to make a sequel to the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. The film starred the wit and whimsy of Jim Henson, who created a compelling story and fascinating puppets for a fantasy world featuring Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie.
Eggers signed on to direct and co-write with his creative partner Sjón, with whom he collaborated on The Northman. Variety reported Chris and Eleanor Columbus are slated to produce the film with Lisa Henson. Also along for the ride is Jim's son, Brian Henson, who will be executive producing.

Jeff Sneider recently reported that Nosferatu director Robert Eggers was set to helm a new Labyrinth movie, and while some were quick to dismiss the rumor, it's now been confirmed.
Back in 2020, we got word that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had signed on to helm a sequel to Jim Henson's fantasy classic for Sony-owned studio TriStar Pictures. Updates have pretty much been non-existent since, and we had heard that another filmmaker was being sought for the project - we just didn't expect it to be Eggers!
According to Deadline, Eggers is also set to write the project with frequent collaborator Sjón for TriStar. Producers will include Lisa Henson, Chris Columbus, and Eleanor Columbus, while Brian Henson will executive produce.
We also have confirmation that the movie will be a direct sequel, not a reboot. Whether this means we'll see Jennifer Connolly back as Sarah and a new...

It’s been an exciting week for Robert Eggers. His remake of Nosferatu has been hugely successful, and it was recently confirmed that his next film will be Werwulf, due out at the end of 2026. Even got through the spell checker, that.
But there’s more! According to Deadline, the filmmaker has closed a deal to write and direct a new Labyrinth film for TriStar Pictures.

Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!

Robert Eggers is sticking with monster movies for his next project following the success of Nosferatu. After the news was announced, Eggers addressed why a Labyrinth movie won't be his next film as was recently rumored.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Eggers was teaming back up with Focus Features to direct Werwulf, a werewolf story. Meanwhile, he was also asked by ComicBook about the rumors that he was setting up a Labyrinth film. Eggers did not outright deny the rumors, nothing that he has a "ton of things in development." This might even suggest that there's some truth to the reports, but that the reboot is just one of multiple potential projects Eggers has his sights on. The director then clarified that, after Nosferatu, he wanted to tell an "original" story for his next film.

2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of the release of the musical fantasy film Labyrinth… and if all goes well, we might be able to celebrate the anniversary with a new film that’s set in the world of the original film. Robert Eggers’ incredible reimagining of Nosferatu has put him on the radar of many studios who want the mostly independent director to work with them on some big projects. A new one being touted by Hollywood rumormonger Jeff Sneider is that Eggers has already chosen a new project, taking on Sony’s long-gestating reboot of the classic Jim Henson fantasy, Labyrinth.
Let’s say from the off that this is only a rumor, and can be taken with a large pinch of salt and any other seasoning you care to throw at it. For one thing, Brian Henson – son of Muppet creator Jim, and one of Labyrinth’s original performers – claimed multiple times in the last year that the “very exciting” sequel/reboot of the cult classic fantasy was being worked on at the beginning of the year. Second, Eggers' run of successful movies, which include The Lighthouse and The Witch,...

Isn’t it weird how the single most influential piece of Christmas-related media is technically a horror story? One of the greatest literary hits of the 19th century, one can even make the argument that Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol paved the way for the rise of Victorian Spiritualism during the following decade. And while the book’s iconic phantoms were immortalized by the gorgeous illustrations by John Leech, future adaptations of the story would all offer different interpretations of the ghosts that terrify Ebenezer Scrooge into becoming a better person.
With that in mind, we’ve decided to celebrate the holiday season by highlighting six of the scariest ghosts from over a century of A Christmas Carol adaptations. After all, with so many spooky spirits haunting cinema and television screens, we’re bound to run into some festive nightmare fuel along the way.

Since it was released over 30 years ago, The Muppet Christmas Carol has become a staple Christmas movie for many to watch during the holiday season. Starring Michael Caine as the human lead character, the Christmas-hating Ebenezer Scrooge, The Muppet Christmas Carol loosely retells the story of Charles Dickens’ classic 1843 novella with various Muppet characters, making for a strange setup considering the original text was much darker. However, the Christmas movie is widely regarded as one of the best A Christmas Carol movie adaptations due to being an easily accessible musical, scoring an 86% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
There have been many modern versions of the A Christmas Carol story, from 2022’s Spirited (starring Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell) to Jim Carrey’s motion captured A Christmas Carol, yet none of them are quite like the muppet movie. Still, Michael Caine’s festive favorite has aged somewhat, and while there are no...

Further proving that every work of literature would be vastly improved by the presence of the Muppets, 1992’s The Muppet Christmas Carol adapted Charles Dickens’ classic yuletide tale for the likes of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Gonzo the Great. Oh, and also Sir Michael Caine.

When Gene Roddenberry first created Star Trek, The Original Series was not a hit. It wasn't until the show hit syndication that it found a second life and spawned two new waves of series and a massive feature film franchise. Since then, many other producers and storytellers have tried to create the next Star Trek, but they were doomed to fail. Some haven't aged well and never made it beyond a single season. Others were unquestionably successful shows, running for more than 100 episodes, spawning spinoffs and companion films.
Though some of these shows have extremely passionate fans, none of them reached the heights that Star Trek did nor are they as bankable a storytelling universe. In its sixth decade, Star Trek is likely Paramount's most profitable franchise and the studio continues to develop new series and films set in that universe. While every series has its merits and is beloved by some fans,...

If you're looking for a raunchy R-rated comedy that also features the masterful puppeteering of the Jim Henson Company, Netflix has you covered next month. The Happytime Murders, the 2018 box-office bomb that combined sex, violence, and puppets, will be available to watch on the streaming service starting December 1. The Happytime Murders was in development for years; it was first announced by Brian Henson, who would write and direct it, in 2008. It was the first (and so far only) film released under the Henson Alternative banner, which was meant to produce edgier puppet-based fiction.

Wicked transports audiences to the world of The Wizard of Oz, with Universal’s adaptation of the Broadway smash starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo hitting theaters Nov. 22. It’s certainly had a smoother road than 1985’s Return to Oz.
After winning a sound Oscar for Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, editor and sound designer Walter Murch was approached by Disney to discuss projects to direct. Murch expressed interest in an Oz story, and the studio was intrigued, as it owned the rights to author L. Frank Baum’s later novels The Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz, on which Return to Oz would be based.
A darker and non-musical follow-up to MGM’s 1939 classic, Return to Oz stars young Fairuza Balk as Dorothy, who is called back to the titular land that has been destroyed by the diabolical Nome King (Nicol Williamson) and Mombi (Jean Marsh). Here,...

The historic Jim Henson Company lot, which started life as Charlie Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, has found a new buyer: John Mayer.
Yes, the singer-songwriter behind “Daughters” and “Waiting on the World to Change” has partnered with filmmaker McG to purchase the sprawling lot, located in the heart of Hollywood at 1416 N. La Brea Ave. The contract is in final negotiations as of Monday night, TheWrap has learned.
Mayer recorded his excellent 2021 album “Sob Rock” at Henson Recording Studios, part of the same lot, and filmed a performance video for “Last Train Home” (from the “Sob Rock”) album there.
Watch that recording below:
McG is best known for directing the “Charlie’s Angels” movies starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, along with “Terminator Salvation,” “We Are Marshall” and this year’s Netflix YA epic, “Uglies.”
Earlier this year, TheWrap exclusively reported that the lot was up for sale.

The word “epic” gets thrown around a lot, but in the case of Grendel, a live-action retelling of John Gardner’s 1971 novel of the same name, it’s not hyperbole. Writer-director Robert D. Krzykowski adapted the book, a modern classic that retells the old English epic poem Beowulf from the perspective of the monster Grendel, who terrorizes the kingdom of Hrothgar of the Danes for 12 years.
The cast is epic, too, with Jeff Bridges as the titular monster, Bryan Cranston as King Hrothgar, Dave Bautista as the warrior Beowulf and T Bone Burnett as the blind, harp-playing Shaper.
Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is doing the creature work and design. Filming is set to begin in Europe next year.
Palisades Park Pictures is handling international sales; CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group co-rep rights for North America.

The Jim Henson Company’s studio lot on La Brea Avenue will not be sold to the Church of Scientology, the estate of the famed puppeteer confirmed Saturday.
“In regards to recent rumors about the sale of the La Brea studio lot, the Henson family is not in any business dealings with the Church of Scientology, and that organization is not in consideration as a potential buyer of the property,” the estate said in a statement.
“It is still the family’s intention to move The Jim Henson Company to a new location it can share with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, but at this time the family is not in escrow with any buyer.”
Rumors of the potential sale were traced back to The InSneider, who referenced The Wrap’s own reporting about a potential sell of the lot from June. Film critic Jeff Sneider wrote, “Well, I’m...

The internet strikes again. While a sequel to the classic Jim Henson movie Labyrinth is in development, a poster advertising Tom Hiddleston taking over the role of the Goblin King in a remake of the film is most definitely fake. What is more, the poster has been causing a stir in the last few days despite originally being created and shared by well-known fake poster Facebook creator Yoda Bby Aby several months ago.
The poster features a hyper-realistic version of Hiddleston, complete with wild blonde hair, eye make-up, and mirrorball jacket, standing above a hazy labyrinth. In a similar reaction to that of a proposed Rob Zombie Nightmare on Elm Street remake poster from the creator, the poster went viral and many people instantly began to believe that this could be a genuine thing even though no such movie has been publicized and, according to the poster, it is being...

Earlier this year, we got word that a new live-action take on the tale of Beowulf is in development with an all-star cast on board. We've seen a number of animated and live-action adaptations of the ancient Danish legend over the years, but this one will be a little different.
Based on John Gardner’s acclaimed novel, Grendel will tell the story from the perspective of the monster, with Jeff Bridges set to provide the voice of the title character, and Dave Bautista on board as the mighty warrior who comes to Danish King Hrothgar's hall to put an end to the creature's rampage, Beowulf.
Now, Collider has unveiled our first look at the design for Grendel courtesy of Jim Henson's Creature Shop.
“That is really exciting because it also balances this very cerebral world that Grendel lives in, where he's trying to understand humans, and he's trying to find his place among them,...

Jim Henson is known and beloved for his exceptional puppet creations, such as in The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. His craftsmanship will be on better display than ever, as the two films, which got a 4K Blu-ray re-release, are now available as collectors editions and with stylized steelbooks.
Although a 4K Blu-ray edition already exists for both of these 80s cult classics, the new collectors editions and steelbooks will feature never-before-seen artwork and special features. The Dark Crystal Collectors Set, which is available on Amazon, includes a 28-page book on the film, art cards, a sticker, and an exclusive replica of the films crystal shard. Fans will have to shell out a pretty penny, however, if they want to acquire this set, as it is currently priced at nearly $100. You remind me of the babe? What babe? The babe with the massive cult following! Nearly 40 years since its release, Labyrinth has endured as one of the most beloved fantasy movies ever. While it was a flop at the box office, the movie would go on to embody so much of what makes the genre what it is, not to mention it being a charming – and sometimes frightening – representation of the brilliance of cinematic puppetry.
Like so many of our favorite movies, when it comes down to it, the box office numbers never mattered. That’s definitely the case with Labyrinth, which took in just under $13 million domestically on a budget reportedly around double that. Jennifer Connelly remembered “hearing rumblings” of it being poorly attended at the multiplex but that it eventually found its fandom. “People’s affection has grown over the years. A handsome American ends up stranded on an alien ship, manned by an unusual alien crew, where he falls in love with its resident warrior woman. It's not "Guardians of the Galaxy," it's "Farscape," the Australian-American sci-fi series! The series was created by Rockne S. O'Bannon and Brian Henson with alien designs courtesy of the Jim Henson Company, including several puppets that served as central characters. "Farscape" is funny, campy, and weird as hell, setting it apart from not only its television contemporaries but all other sci-fi shows. "Farscape" ran for four seasons from 1999-2003, and while it wasn't as popular as some of the other big sci-fi shows, it has a devoted cult following that really loves it.
In a retrospective for the show's 25th anniversary at IGN, Henson shared his inspiration for the show and what he and O'Bannon were trying to do with "Farscape." With its wacky...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.

One of Hollywood’s greatest living actors, Michael Caine, is sending his fans into a tizzy over a photo posted to his personal Twitter account. The image depicts an impressive stack of Caine’s films on DVD and Blu-ray, encapsulating the highs and lows of his storied career as an entertainer. While gems like Get Carter, The Last Valley, and Harry Brown adorn the pile, cinematic blights like On Deadly Ground, Jaws: The Revenge, and The Island sit among the crowd.
The variety of films in Caine’s collection speaks volumes about the actor’s sense of humor and accomplishment. While some actors tend to want to cast their cinematic sins to the fiery depths, Caine proudly displays several of his biggest box office bombs and critically panned misfires. For example, Peter Benchley’s The Island is an insane bit of cinema featuring Caine as a kidnap victim of inbred pirates.
