James Cameron addresses the Roland Emmerich feud rumors, citing little contact during their Fantastic Voyage remake attempt. Emmerich exited the project after Cameron's involvement, labeling Cameron as overbearing. The project remains in limbo with Emmerich unlikely to return, leaving the future director unknown.
James Cameron responds to his rumored feud with Roland Emmerich, the former director of the Fantastic Voyage remake. Released in 1966, the original Fantastic Voyage is an Academy Award-winning science fiction movie that was directed by the legendary Richard Fleischer and was based on a story written by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. 17 years after it premiered, Cameron indicated an interest in directing a remake, but later abandoned the project to focus on others. Since then, hes brought on other directors to helm the movie, including Emmerich.

They find, living there, a mysterious aristocrat named Flint (James Daly) who lives in a posh mansion surrounded by ancient works of Earth art, alongside his attractive young ward Reyna (Louise Sorel). Flint's mansion is protected by a strange, orb-shaped robot, and an investigation finds that Flint's possessions are written in the handwriting of Leonardo da Vinci, Johannes Brahms, and other notable artists. Reyna and Kirk (William Shatner) immediately take a shine to each other and play a game of pool while Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) goes looking for the desired medicine.

Nearly 60 years ago, Star Trek: The Original Series introduced the Mirror Universe. Star Trek: Discovery returned to that parallel dimension in Season 1, showing audiences more of that world. In the final season of Star Trek: Discovery, the fate of a key vessel in the mirror universe is revealed.
The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 5, "Mirrors," now streaming on Paramount+.
One of the most interesting concepts in the Star Trek mythology is its "mirror universe," a parallel dimension where almost everyone is evil. Of the universe's dozen series, only four ever explored it, and only two did so more than once. Star Trek: Discovery made the mirror universe key to its first season, and in its final one, the series revealed what happened to the Iss Enterprise 57 years after it was first introduced. We knew Discovery was different from the start. Pitched as a prequel to The Original Series, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery had a ton of references to the first Trek series, including Michael Burnham as Spock’s adopted sister, which also meant appearances from Sarek and Amanda Grayson, as well as Kirk’s predecessor Captain Pike.
The most audacious connection to The Original Series came with the revelation that Discovery‘s Captain Gabriel Lorca came from the Mirror Universe, that evil alternate dimension first introduced in the Tos season two episode “Mirror, Mirror.” In that 1967 episode, written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Marc Daniels, an ion storm disrupts Kirk’s attempt to beam back to the Enterprise, causing him to materialize abroad on the alternate-universe Iss Enterprise, part of the Terran Empire.

One of Star Trek's most intriguing concepts is the 'Mirror Universe' where everyone is an evil version of themselves. Four shows from The Original Series to Star Trek: Discovery visited this awful, parallel dimension in unique and interesting ways. Of the different appearances of the Mirror Universe, some shows depicted it better than others.
One of the most iconic concepts introduced in Star Trek is the so-called "Mirror Universe," a parallel dimension in which doubles of heroic characters exist but evil. Created by Jerome Bixby for Star Trek: The Original Series, the concept returned in future series and was a significant part of the relaunch of the universe in 2017's Discovery. Of all the different Star Trek shows set in the Mirror Universe, which show did it the best? There are strong contenders, especially since the universe is different each time they revisit it.
While multiverses may be all...

One of Star Trek fans' favorite episodes is when a series travels to the sadistic, evil Mirror Universe where everyone is a villain. Star Trek: Voyager never made the jump across dimensions to the Mirror Universe, but one episode showed audiences what that might have looked like. The Season 4 episode "Living Witness" showed a very different USS Voyager in one of the series most interesting and high-concept episodes.
After nearly 60 years of existence, many things about Star Trek: The Original Series are iconic from the (never actually said) line, "Beam me up, Scotty" to Leonard Nimoy's Vulcan nerve pinch. The Season 2 episode "Mirror, Mirror" is another, for its introduction of the Mirror Universe. The goatee Spock wears in the episode even started the pre-internet meme of "evil" versions of characters sporting distinct facial hair. In fact, Star Trek: Discovery is the show that spent the most time in the Mirror Universe,...

When 1960s and ‘70s icon Raquel Welch died last week at the age of 82, much of the media focus was on her (well-deserved) status as one of the most memorable and gorgeous sex symbols in movie history. A lot of the coverage, in fact, noted that the Chicago native’s substantial talents as an actress, singer, and dancer, were overshadowed by her status as one of the era’s premiere pinups.
While she may be best remembered for her turn as a skimpily-clad cavewoman in 1966’s One Million Years B.C., her breakout role came earlier that year in the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle Fantastic Voyage. The film was Welch’s fourth, but the first in which she had a lead role. She played Cora Peterson, one of five members of a medical team who are miniaturized, along with a small submarine, and injected into the body of a defecting...

Executive producer Ed Seaman and Mvd Entertainment Group have acquired punk rocker Gg Allin’s life and music rights, with Jonas Åkerlund attached to the direct the biopic film, titled “Gg Allin: Live. Fast. Die.”
Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan MonEord will produce along with Eric D. Wilkinson from a screenplay by Richard Schenkman.
Known as rock ‘n roll’s “outlaw scumfuc,” Gg Allin’s live shows were legendary for his outrageous antics. Kevin Michael Allin (born Jesus Christ Allin) adopted “Gg” as his stage persona, but the role took over his life. Descending into booze, drugs and schizophrenia, Gg tore through band mates, fans, and women, announcing that he would commit suicide on stage October 31st, 1991 – only to find himself in prison for assault on that date.

This Star Trek article contains spoilers.
In Act 4, Scene 1 of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, the heroine Portia, posing as a male lawyer, begs Shylock the moneylender to spare her love’s friend the “pound of flesh” that he is owed. Her speech goes:
“The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The thronèd monarch better than his crown.”
It is the quote referenced by the title of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ finale, “A Quality of Mercy,” demonstrating, aside from anything else, that sometimes what you learn in your degree can be relevant to your job. The use of the quote tells us about Pike’s character, what sort of commander he is, and what fuels...

Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots are plunged into a suburban nightmare in this unsettling satire on consumerism
In one of the creepiest episodes of the vintage American TV series The Twilight Zone, residents of the apparently idyllic Peaksville find themselves cut off from the rest of the world, terrorised by the petulant yet godlike mind of a small child. Adapted from a story by Jerome Bixby, the episode (ironically entitled It’s a Good Life) struck a chilling chord with audiences in 1961, watching from behind their picket fences, mesmerised by its darkly comic vision of a world in which failing to think happy thoughts was punishable by death, or worse.
You can see a trace of It’s a Good Life (which has continued to resonate through popular culture) in Vivarium, the second feature from director Lorcan Finnegan and writer Garret Shanley, a paranoid fable in which the aspiration of acquiring a...

“Sci-fi For The Mind”
By Raymond Benson
Renowned science fiction writer Jerome Bixby produced many short stories in the genre, but he is perhaps most well-known for writing a handful of classic Star Trek episodes. The memorable original Twilight Zone entry, “It’s a Good Life,” was based on his short story, as was the same segment in The Twilight Zone—The Motion Picture (1983). Bixby was also responsible for the stories or scripts for sci-fi films such as Fantastic Voyage (1966), and It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958).
Bixby’s last work, allegedly completed on his deathbed in 1998, was the screenplay The Man from Earth. Nearly ten years later (2007), Bixby’s son Emerson helped bring it to the screen as producer. The low-budget feature was directed by Richard Schenkman and starred David Lee Smith as “John Oldman,” a man in the present day who has lived without aging for 14,000 years. If you can’t beat them, join them.
That’s what the independent producers of “The Man From Earth: Holocene” concluded about the inevitable piracy of their sci-fi film, a sequel to the 2007 cult hit “The Man From Earth.”
More than two months before its April 3 release on digital and DVD, they uploaded it to The Pirate Bay — available in up to 1080p HD format — and it spread to other services. The video is book-ended by an appeal from director-producer Richard Schenkman to consider donating some money if they watched the movie. “If you like it, support it, and remember that sharing is caring,” reads the note they included with the digital versions they distributed on piracy networks.
Since “self-pirating” their movie on Jan. 15, according to Schenkman and producer Eric D. Wilkinson, they’ve received nearly $45,000 in donations via their site, manfromearth.com, from fans and supporters around the world including China,...

One of the more original sci-fi indies of the 2000s gets an unexpected sequel in The Man From Earth: Holocene, director-writer-producer Richard Schenkman's intriguing but underwhelming follow-up to the microbudgeted mindblower The Man From Earth (2007). Once again starring David Lee Smith as an ordinary-looking dude who is actually some 14,000 years old, this second installment works best when it adheres to the talk-heavy template set by the original, written by respected Star Trek and Twilight Zone contributor Jerome Bixby.

For many people, Alien (1979) is the yardstick by which all “creature on a spaceship” films are measured. However, the first few inches on that stick are occupied by It! The Terror from Beyond Space (1958), an effective low budget shocker that helped write the template still used in sci-fi and horror today. Climb aboard for a 69 minute rocket ride to Mars and back with an unwanted passenger. And no, I don’t mean (insert name or political affiliate you hate here).

The Nice Guys didn’t perform as well as we felt it deserved, yet Shane Black is something of a hot commodity again. While his Predator sequel / reboot / whatever prepares for a release in February of 2018, the writer-director apparently spent this Memorial Day weekend with, fittingly, our greatest living American, Dwayne Johnson, to move forward with their long-rumored collaboration: Doc Savage, a ’30s- and ’40s-era superhero who pre-dates and, speaking for ability, in many ways matches Superman.
Taking to Instagram, the star confirmed his involvement in the project scripted by Black, Nice Guys co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry. Sony is supporting the project, about which little else is known — though one imagines it’s to come after The Predator, i.e. remains a few years off. Waiting aside, the point stands: it’s plenty nice to have more Black, and it’s no less odd to be actively excited about a superhero picture.

According to new reports, director Guillermo del Toro ("Pacific Rim") is in talks with 20th Century Fox, to helm a 3D reboot of the 1966 feature "Fantastic Voyage", to be produced by James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment, from a screenplay by David Goyer:
Screenplay for the original 1966 "Fantastic Voyage" was written by Harry Kleiner, from a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby.
The movie also inspired an animated Filmation TV series and follow-up book series by author Issac Asimov.
In "Fantastic Voyage", both the Us and Russia work together to develop micro-technology allowing matter to be miniaturized using a process to shrink individual atoms. But the smaller an object is made, the quicker it reverts back to its original size.

Almost anyone who saw the 2007 film The Man From Earth was struck by just how powerful that low budget sci-fi movie is. It was so low budget that it takes place almost entirely in one room with the characters just discussing the possibility of a man who never aged and the implications that might have on human history. I was as blown away by the film as anyone, so I was thrilled when I found out tonight that producer Eric D. Wilkinson and director/co-producer Richard Schenkman were putting together a Kickstarter campaign for a spin-off of the original film titled Man From Earth: The Series.
Now, it doesn’t take someone with the wisdom of 14,000 years to gather that title means that instead of a second film, this new project is going to be a series. The new plot picks up seven years after the original, when John is...

After a decade of low-budget cheesy special effects science fiction films, the early 1960s was particularly quiet, ceding to television series such as Star Trek and The Time Tunnel. But, also released in 1966 was an eye-opening spectacular that had a plausible premise, strong cast, and the next generation in film special effects. Fantastic Voyage may be remembered today for Raquel Welch in a tight outfit, it is also a step forward in cinematic Sf. Thankfully, it preceded 2001: A Space Odyssey by two years.
At a time when miniaturization was making home technology smaller and more sophisticated, the idea of inserting a tiny sub full of humans into the body of an ill scientist seemed the next logical step. The body in question was the victim of an assassination attempt and his knowledge and life had to be saved so a daring experiment was to be undertaken. Forget that the...

I’d never heard of The Man From Earth before the Kickstarter campaign for its sequel came across my desk. At first, I thought I was reading about a follow-up to Nicolas Roeg’s sci-fi classic starring David Bowie. What surprised me more was that none of my Fsr colleagues knew what it was, either. Yet this 2007 movie has a 7.9 rating on IMDb with nearly 82k votes. And not even enough reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to result in a score. The reason is that a lot of its fans discovered it through torrents, a fact that director Richard Schenkman and producer Eric D. Wilkinson admit they’re okay with considering the awareness and eventual success it brought to the film. Wondering if the sequel, The Man From Earth II: Millennium, would be worth promoting in this column, I watched the original this week. It’s streaming on Netflix if you’re interested. Scripted...

In 2007 The Man From Earth took the internet by storm, introducing a mind-boggling, completely compelling science fiction concept to an unexpectedly wide audience. It was writer Jerome Bixby’s final work, and the film wasn’t made until almost a decade after his death. Now, six years after the film’s release, the filmmakers are listening to the audience cries for more and are making a sequel titled Man From Earth Millennium.
The first film’s director, Richard Schenkman, is back at the helm for this outing and I recently had the opportunity to talk to him about the project. We discussed getting the first film made, the struggles of funding this sort of movie, what can be expected from Man From Earth Millennium and much more.
Check out the full interview below.
Wgtc: How’s the Kickstarter campaign going so far?
Richard Schenkman: Regarding the campaign, we’re just three days in.

Warren Stevens, who has appeared in more than 160 television shows and movies over the years -- including "Star Trek" and a pair of stints on "The Twilight Zone" in different decades -- has died. He was 92. Stevens was already a veteran character actor when he played Rojan in the 1968 "Star Trek" episode "By Any Other Name." The episode, written by D.C. Fontana and the late Jerome Bixby, aired in the show's second season, and had Stevens' character along with Barbara Bouchet's Kelinda, commandeer the Enterprise, trying to take the Enterprise to another galaxy. However, Stevens is probably better known to genre fans for playing Lt. Doc Ostrow in 1956's "Forbidden Planet." Ostrow uses the "plastic educator" in the film to help the rest of his crew, but dies in the process. That film also ...

We know the greats; movies like Metropolis (1927), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), Star Wars (1977).
And there are those films which maybe didn’t achieve cinematic greatness, but through their inexhaustible watchability became genre touchstones, lesser classics but classics nonetheless, like The War of the Worlds (1953), Godzilla (1954), Them! (1954), The Time Machine (1960).
In the realm of science fiction cinema, those are the cream (and below that, maybe the half and half). But sci fi is one of those genres which has often too readily leant itself to – not to torture an analogy — producing nonfat dairy substitute.
During the first, great wave of sci fi movies in the 1950s, the target audience was kids and teens. There wasn’t a lot in the way of “serious” sci fi. Most of it was churned out quick and cheap; drive-in fodder, grist for the Saturday matinee mill.

Horror fans may have mixed feelings about the ongoing Final Destination franchise, but with Final Destination 5 fated to make it’s stand in theaters on Friday, August 12th, one thing we can count on is a roller coaster of death-defying thrills. Actor Tony Todd also returns as the mysterious Mr. William Bludworth, a mortician with an unusual knowledge of death and the rules of the fabled Grim Reaper. In honor of the talented character actor, I present my Top Ten list of favorite Tony Todd roles.
10. The Rock (1996)

According to reports, producer James Cameron has hired Shawn Levy to direct his 3D reboot of the 1966 feature "Fantastic Voyage" for 20th Century Fox and Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment, from a screenplay by Shane Salerno ("Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem).
Screenplay for the original "Fantastic Voyage" was written by Harry Kleiner, from a story by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. The movie also inspired an animated Filmation TV series and follow-up book series by author Issac Asimov.
In "Fantastic Voyage", The Us and Soviet Union develop technology allowing matter to be miniaturized using a process to shrink individual atoms. But the smaller an object is made, the quicker it reverts back to its original size.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis — who worked with director James Cameron on the script for his Oscar-winning blockbuster Avatar — has been hired for rewrites on Fox's remake of its 1966 sci-fi adventure Fantastic Voyage, which Cameron will produce with his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.
Bourne Ultimatum director director Paul Greengrass had originally been tapped to direct the 3-D project, which has been in development for many years, with earlier screenplays written by Shane Salerno (Aliens vs Predator - Requiem) and Cormac and Marianne Wibberly (National Treasure).
In the original film, a diplomat is nearly assassinated. In order to save him, a submarine is shrunken to microscopic size and injected into his blood stream with a small crew of scientists aboard.
The original feature film was written by veteran television scribe Jerome Bixby, renowned for his scripts for such series as The Twilight Zone and Star Trek.

Jason Rothenberg, a scribe whose sole IMDb writing credit is a TV movie called Body Politic, has been hired by Warner Bros. and Leonardo DiCaprio's company Appian Way to write a new Twilight Zone film. According to Deadline, there's no word if the new film will take stories from the original series and reimagine them, like the 1983 Joe Dante film, but that's what to be expected. This is a damn terrific assignment for someone with not too much credit under his belt. Here's hoping the beloved series is treated with dignity.
So what episode would you most like to see get the big screen treatment? Personally I loved Dante's version of Jerome Bixby's "It' a Good Life," first adapted in a season 3 Twilight Zone episode of the same name. It would be cool to see them tackle one of the more heavy episodes though, like "People Are Alike...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Everybody loves evil children! Judging from its trailer, the wide release of The Unborn this weekend promises to unleash a new terrifying tot upon a nation of unsuspecting teens. But the idea of scary juveniles extends far beyond the expected audience for David Goyer's jolt-fest.
One writer suggested that the idea of evil children originated "in the biblical tale of Elisha's mockery," in which 42 small boys disrespected a prophet of God -- and were promptly torn to pieces by two bears. The silver screen featured dozens of bratty kids in the 30s and 40s (e.g. the Dead End Kids/Bowery Boys) but none as murderously terrifying as 10-year-old Rhoda Penmark (Patty McCormack) in Mervyn LeRoy's The Bad Seed (1956), a rebel yell against a conformist generation of "perfect" suburban families.
