Milan Luthria who made his directorial debut on 19 February, 1999 with Kachche Dhaage revealed a music sense as evolved as his father, the great Raj Khosla. Raj Khosla’s film of the same name Kachche Dhaage in 1973 had Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s smash-hit songs ‘Hai hai ek ladka mujhko khat likhta hai’, ‘Kachche dhaage ke saath jisse bandh diya jaye’, ‘Mere bachpan tu jaa’, kZara se agar bewafa hum na hote’ and kJa re ja oh diwane’, all sung by Lataji.

26 years later, in Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhaage, Lataji sang for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for the first and last time. The song, ‘Oopar Khuda Aasman Neeche’ was originally sung by Nusrat Saab himself as an independent song.

At one point in singer-songwriter Jeff Buckely’s promising career, the musician exclaimed on MTV that he sees himself as a parasite in an industry he’s long admired. Not quite a household name in the United States, the Southern California native found an immense following in Europe and other countries that seemed to gravitate towards his unique sound developed while playing in New York nightclubs in his early 20s. At a time in the 1990s when grunge music became popular, Jeff Buckley’s eclectic brand and distinctive voice was cut short when he drowned in Memphis at the tender age of 30.

Much has been written about the musician who only gave the world one studio album, “Grace.” Often regarded for his covers of previously well-known songs, Buckley is best remembered for his take on the Leonard Cohen hit, “Hallelujah,” notable for Buckley’s interpretation of the song as more sexually based than gospel hymn.

It’s extremely hard not to gush over Jeff Buckley. An Adonis with an four-octave range, the singer-songwriter had the sensitivity of an early-Seventies folkie, the melody-meets-muscle rock chops of an early-Nineties grunge practitioner, and a frontman sex appeal that was timeless. He counted Nina Simone, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as his musical influences, and could replicate their vocal stylings to an uncanny degree. Having moved from Orange County, California, to New York City, Buckley began playing guitar and singing cover songs at the Lower East Side cafe Sin-é.

Jeff Buckley’s life started with both an act of embrace and a decisive abandonment. His mother was only 17 when she conceived him and, while it was suggested she might give the baby up for adoption, she knew she had to nurture the human growing inside her and let him nurture her in return. Jeff’s father, on the other hand, could not let his dreams of being a famous singer/songwriter be replaced by the difficulties of raising a child and chose not to be a part of his life.

Tim Buckley would eventually gain the notoriety he sought, producing nine studio albums and serving as a well-known figure in the folk rock community for his unique voice and experimentation with multiple genres of music. Though Jeff did finally meet his father following a concert near where he grew up in Southern California, Tim would die of a heroin overdose shortly thereafter.

A lost album from the famed Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is set to release over three decades after he originally recorded it.

According to Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, the album was forgotten in warehouse storage and was rediscovered when the label was relocating its archive in 2021. Khan first recorded Chain of Light at Real World Studios in April of 1990, and the album will release 34 years later on Sept. 20

New Delhi, Feb 21 (Ians) Acclaimed lyricist, screenwriter and poet Javed Akhtar’s comments in Pakistan on 26/11 terrorists “roaming free” in the country and the bitterness in the hearts of Indians have drawn huge applause in India.

Akhtar was last week welcomed with thunderous applause at the 7th Faiz Festival in Lahore. Apart from his love for great Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Akhtar (78) spoke largely about language, both English and mother tongue – be t Hindi, Urdu or a regional one – and the need to give the same respect to all of them.

In a back-stage interaction with journalists just after he received his trophy, Keeravani, who’s also known as M M Kreem in Hindi movie credits, said he is a “great fan” of the 1971 musical film ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, the Colin Farrell-starrer ‘Phone Booth’ (2002) and the Eddie Murphy movie, ‘Coming to America’ (1988).

Asked if he feels Bollywood has run out of ideas when it comes to music, what with the sudden surge in remixes, Rahul blames music labels and producers for the trend.

"It is a marketing decision. People in power always decide what they want to do. They have decided they want to take a safe bet and put out a sound that is already popular," Rahul told Ians.

However, every Independence Day or Republic Day sees TV channels, radio stations and programmes in educational institutions across the country still playing songs from the album as a mark of celebration. At the time, Rahman, who had just turned 30, still had his flamboyant hairstyle and it had been only five years since he'd blazed into the national music scene with Roja. The idea of making a patriotic album reportedly came from his school friend Bharat Bala, an ad filmmaker who is the son of a freedom fighter. 1997 was also the year that Sony Music entered the Indian market and sought to promote local artistes internationally. Ar Rahman was the first artiste they signed for a three album contract.

In Raid, Ajay Devgn joined up with Ileana D’Cruz and Shaurabh Shukla in a very serious story based on true events about corruption in Lucknow of 1981. For the soundtrack, powerful music is the key here, as the heavy action is not one really made for a lot of classic Bollywood music. The complexity comes in because for this story the music must both excite the crowds and give way to the tender moments. The music directors had to compose a combination of essentially mellow but powerful songs so that Ajay can still hit the villain where it hurts but still find a way to melt the heart whenever Ileana is on screen. The creation of this soundtrack falls to two different styles of music directors Taniskh Bagchi and Amit Trivedi.

Shooting in the land of polo, Rajasthan, Milan and writer Rajat Aroraa designed a sequence that sees Ajay Devgn, throw caution to the winds when he accepts a dare and walk across a polo field with a polo game in full flow during the song Mere Rashke Qamar which features Ileana D’Cruz and him.

From Star Trek and Field Of Dreams to The Rocketeer and Krull: we salute the film scores of the late, great James Horner.

When composer James Horner died in a plane crash in June 2015, cinema lost one of its most profoundly emotional voices, and the final chapter on Horner's astonishing career has now closed with his last work: Antoine Fuqua's Western remake The Magnificent Seven. Horner actually wrote the score based on the script before the film even started production, such was his passion for it, and it's been posthumously completed by his longtime collaborator Simon Franglen.

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar

The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.

With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

Michael Brook is a Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated composer, producer and recording artist recognized for his unique style of composition that traverses ambient, world, Americana, electronic and orchestral territories. His work often contains unusual combinations of instruments, sounds and moods that create a powerful, unique and emotional impact.

Brook’s music career began as a recording artist, guitar player, producer and collaborator, working with artists such as Brian Eno, David Sylvian, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, The Pogues, on ground breaking labels such as 4Ad and Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. As his music began to be licensed in films such as Heat and Any Given Sunday, he developed an interest in composing for film and moved to Los Angeles from the UK in 1999. Among the more than 40 films that he has scored are The Perks of Being A Wallflower, The Fighter, Into the Wild, Chavez, An Inconvenient Truth. and the Oscar-winning documentary Undefeated.

The Bengali songs of Lata Mangeshkar composed by Salil Choudhary changed the entire profile and personality of the popular film song in Bengal.
