Milan Luthria who made his directorial debut on 19 February, 1999 with Kachche Dhaage revealed a music sense as evolved as his father, the great Raj Khosla. Raj Khosla’s film of the same name Kachche Dhaage in 1973 had Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s smash-hit songs ‘Hai hai ek ladka mujhko khat likhta hai’, ‘Kachche dhaage ke saath jisse bandh diya jaye’, ‘Mere bachpan tu jaa’, kZara se agar bewafa hum na hote’ and kJa re ja oh diwane’, all sung by Lataji.
26 years later, in Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhaage, Lataji sang for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan for the first and last time. The song, ‘Oopar Khuda Aasman Neeche’ was originally sung by Nusrat Saab himself as an independent song.
Milan wanted the song in his debut film, and he wanted Lataji to sing it. Lataji was nearly 70 when she sang the impossibly high notes of the sublime number. It was recorded on 15 August...

At one point in singer-songwriter Jeff Buckely’s promising career, the musician exclaimed on MTV that he sees himself as a parasite in an industry he’s long admired. Not quite a household name in the United States, the Southern California native found an immense following in Europe and other countries that seemed to gravitate towards his unique sound developed while playing in New York nightclubs in his early 20s. At a time in the 1990s when grunge music became popular, Jeff Buckley’s eclectic brand and distinctive voice was cut short when he drowned in Memphis at the tender age of 30.
Much has been written about the musician who only gave the world one studio album, “Grace.” Often regarded for his covers of previously well-known songs, Buckley is best remembered for his take on the Leonard Cohen hit, “Hallelujah,” notable for Buckley’s interpretation of the song as more sexually based than gospel hymn.

It’s extremely hard not to gush over Jeff Buckley. An Adonis with an four-octave range, the singer-songwriter had the sensitivity of an early-Seventies folkie, the melody-meets-muscle rock chops of an early-Nineties grunge practitioner, and a frontman sex appeal that was timeless. He counted Nina Simone, Judy Garland, Led Zeppelin, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as his musical influences, and could replicate their vocal stylings to an uncanny degree. Having moved from Orange County, California, to New York City, Buckley began playing guitar and singing cover songs at the Lower East Side cafe Sin-é.

Jeff Buckley’s life started with both an act of embrace and a decisive abandonment. His mother was only 17 when she conceived him and, while it was suggested she might give the baby up for adoption, she knew she had to nurture the human growing inside her and let him nurture her in return. Jeff’s father, on the other hand, could not let his dreams of being a famous singer/songwriter be replaced by the difficulties of raising a child and chose not to be a part of his life.
Tim Buckley would eventually gain the notoriety he sought, producing nine studio albums and serving as a well-known figure in the folk rock community for his unique voice and experimentation with multiple genres of music. Though Jeff did finally meet his father following a concert near where he grew up in Southern California, Tim would die of a heroin overdose shortly thereafter.

Ten years after her Janis Joplin bio-doc, Janis: Little Girl Blue, director Amy Berg returns to the music world with It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, an adoring portrait of another blazing talent who died way too young, leaving an influential legacy. Every fan — whether those of us who got misty-eyed to his music in the ‘90s or romantic teenagers discovering him in recent years via social media — has their favorite Buckley songs. Mine oscillate between “So Real” and “Grace,” “Last Goodbye” and “Everybody Here Wants You.” For Berg, whose connection to the artist’s music pulses through every moment of her new doc, it would appear to be his transcendent cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
That’s an entirely valid choice and a popular one, it being Buckley’s only song to reach No. 1 on a Billboard chart — in 2008, 11 years after his tragic death at age 30. But it...

In Islamic tradition, the father of a newborn is expected to recite the adhan, or call to prayer, in his child’s right ear, so that the first sounds the baby hears upon entering this world are exaltations of God’s supremacy, setting them on a path of grace and virtue. It should come as no surprise, then, that the first sounds Zakir Hussain heard when he was born, one distant March in Bombay, were not words of faith, but tabla rhythms whispered by his father, Ustad Alla Rakha, himself a master of the instrument.

Asked if he feels Bollywood has run out of ideas when it comes to music, what with the sudden surge in remixes, Rahul blames music labels and producers for the trend.
"It is a marketing decision. People in power always decide what they want to do. They have decided they want to take a safe bet and put out a sound that is already popular," Rahul told Ians.
"It is extremely unfortunate because in a country of 1.3 billion people we have talent dying for opportunities. It is extremely unfair of the producers to not give it a thought. Ayushmann Khurrana goes looking for the out-of-the-way, the strange and different, something others aren’t doing whenever he does a Bollywood film. From Vicky Donor to Andhadhun, they are all twisted tales of everyday life and his latest Dream Girl is just as out there. A man who can play any woman but a pregnant one, uses his talent on a phone line as Puja and slowly becomes every man’s greatest fantasy. Meet Bros are an odd choice for this album, as they are better known for once off remixes and dance hits, having delivered some of the best item songs of the last 5 years, so it will be interesting to see what they can bring for a full album.
“O Radhe Radhe Radhe, tere bina Krishna to lage aadhe aadhe,” is the motif line of the first song of this album; a peppy, upbeat and catchy number Radhe Radhe.

The drama stars the exciting jodi of Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor who are known for their fastidious work for any film they agree to do. Audiences have come to expect both a strong story and some fantastic dance moves from their films so there is no surprise then that excitement abounds for this film. The soundtrack too must give both Shahid and Shraddha a chance to show off their talents. Also, the music needs to be tempered to give the dialogue the best chance to flourish but not lose the escapism all Bollywood watchers come to watch these movies for. This job is given to Anu Malik and Rochak Kohli, one a seasoned hand in this type of album, the other a younger...

MusicReleased in August 1997 to commemorate 50 years of Indian independence, the album became a bestseller in no time.Sowmya RajendranIt’s been over 20 years since music composer Ar Rahman released his album Vande Mataram. However, every Independence Day or Republic Day sees TV channels, radio stations and programmes in educational institutions across the country still playing songs from the album as a mark of celebration. At the time, Rahman, who had just turned 30, still had his flamboyant hairstyle and it had been only five years since he'd blazed into the national music scene with Roja. The idea of making a patriotic album reportedly came from his school friend Bharat Bala, an ad filmmaker who is the son of a freedom fighter. 1997 was also the year that Sony Music entered the Indian market and sought to promote local artistes internationally. Ar Rahman was the first artiste they signed for a three album contract.

In Raid, Ajay Devgn joined up with Ileana D’Cruz and Shaurabh Shukla in a very serious story based on true events about corruption in Lucknow of 1981. For the soundtrack, powerful music is the key here, as the heavy action is not one really made for a lot of classic Bollywood music. The complexity comes in because for this story the music must both excite the crowds and give way to the tender moments. The music directors had to compose a combination of essentially mellow but powerful songs so that Ajay can still hit the villain where it hurts but still find a way to melt the heart whenever Ileana is on screen. The creation of this soundtrack falls to two different styles of music directors Taniskh Bagchi and Amit Trivedi.

After the recreation of the romantic ballad Sanu Ek Pal Chain, the makers of Raid have now recreated another chart-topping melody of late singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Titled ‘Nit Khair Manga’, the track has been recreated in parts by lyricist Manoj Muntashir and sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s singer-nephew, Rahat.
“The song has been picturised on Ajay, who plays an upright and no-nonsense income tax officer and Ileana, who will be seen in the role of his supportive and brave wife. The song offers a glimpse into the onscreen couple’s life and the love, care and warmth they share in the film. It’s shot across Lucknow including landmark locations such as Hussainabad Clock Tower, Rumi Darwaza, Bada Imambada, Kudiya Ghat and Residency”, said director Rajkumar Gupta.
Composer Tanishk Bagchi, who has recreated the song, said, “When you hear it, you’ll understand that not just the hook line,...

This Valentine’s fall in love again with the latest romantic number ‘Sanu Ek Pal’ from Raid. Originally sung by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the song is recreated by composer Tanishk Bagchi, penned by Manoj Muntashir and sung by none other than Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Interestingly, the song was earlier selected for Tseries other home production, however, when Ajay Devgn heard the recreated song, he insisted that it should be a part of Raid. Bhushan Kumar, hence decided to include this timeless melody in Raid.
The song beautifully captures the love and emotion Ajay Devgn and Ileana D’cruz’s characters. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sings with such feeling it just makes you sigh and swoon!

Here is some really cool Behind the Scenes scoop! Ranveer Singh who essays the role of the ambitious and obsessive Sultan – Alauddin Khilji had quite a unique routine before he got into his costumes for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati. His spot boy would also accompany the actor with speakers in hand and the music would play through the time he travelled to the set, to the time he got into the outfit, right until he walked on the set to give his shot.

Baadshaho
Starring Ajay Devgan, Emraan Hashmi, Sanjay Mishra, Ileana d’Cruz, Esha Gupta, Vidyut Jamwal
Directed by Milan Luthria
If you are looking for a film that is unintentionally funny because it takes itself so seriously you would think the end-result would be a heist film on a par with Vijay Anand’s Jewel Thief or at least Milan Luthria’s Kachche Dhaage, then look again.
This is no Oceans 11. Baadshaho is a class apart. Seldom have I come cross a screenplay so absurd and bombastic it qualifies among the most deplorably written feasts of fatuousness in recent times. Making it worse are the performance. So pretentious and hammy are the actors it would be an insult to good taste to call them actors.
Topping the list of performing travesties is Ileana D’Cruz. Playing what looks like a Gayatri Devi lookalike she gives what could possibly rank among the...

It’s very rare when a recreated track of an already popular track becomes an instant hit. But when it comes to Baadshaho’s first song ‘Mere Rashke Qamar’, the song went on to become a hit. The next day of the song launch, this sufi track garnered as high as 10 million views combined on YouTube and Facebook. Within one week the song has crossed 23 million views solely on YouTube and still counting making it a huge chartbuster.
Bhushan Kumar who says it is very difficult to stand up to the success of the original song’s composition is overjoyed with what the team has achieved with the recreated version of Nusrat Saab’s song. Milan’s films always have sequences involving horses, like the iconic horse race in Once upon a time in Mumbaai. The director is a passionate horse lover, rider and racing enthusiast.
For his upcoming film Baadshaho, Milan came up with a unique sequence, which he executed himself. Shooting in the land of polo, Rajasthan, Milan and writer Rajat Aroraa designed a sequence that sees Ajay Devgn, throw caution to the winds when he accepts a dare and walk across a polo field with a polo game in full flow during the song Mere Rashke Qamar which features Ileana D’Cruz and him.
Polo is the second fastest game in the world, after ice hockey. And more difficult to shoot in because animals come into play and hence two professional polo teams were hired and the sequence was shot at Jodhpur polo ground. Milan himself mounted one of the horses while...

From Star Trek and Field Of Dreams to The Rocketeer and Krull: we salute the film scores of the late, great James Horner.
When composer James Horner died in a plane crash in June 2015, cinema lost one of its most profoundly emotional voices, and the final chapter on Horner's astonishing career has now closed with his last work: Antoine Fuqua's Western remake The Magnificent Seven. Horner actually wrote the score based on the script before the film even started production, such was his passion for it, and it's been posthumously completed by his longtime collaborator Simon Franglen.
To mark the occasion, here are the 25 most seminal scores from a lamented, legendary figure of film music.

Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.
