How does one bring something fresh to the late-night genre? According to John Mulaney, it seems the best way to go about it is to both embrace and ignore all that came before, but more importantly, to not get hung up on who you’re trying to appeal to today. In an industry that has become so beholden to algorithms, Mulaney believes the only way to cut through is to just not care about cutting through. Speaking in a recent interview with Vulture, the “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” host went into detail about what drives his creative process and his hopes for his wild, unwieldy talk show.
“Whether something’s good or people like it is so ephemeral,” said Mulaney. “If they could possibly predict it with data, they’d have more hits. I don’t mean Netflix. I mean everybody.”
And yet, considering that his show is on...

John Mulaney did such a good job, Netflix clearly thought, on his Everybody's in LA series that the streamer thought it safe to give the comedian his own ongoing live talk show. How good is it? Reviews are mixed.
The issue for Netflix, at least according to Variety and Mulaney himself, is that the show's early guests were not all A-listers. There was quality among the group, of course, but no Brad Pitt, George Clooney, or Taylor Swift to speak of. But that is part of the Mulaney niche as well.
He might not always seek out the most popular among us, but he does want to have people who might be interesting to speak with and to the viewer. That should ultimately be the point anyway, right? We want to be entertained, and if Fred Armisen appears (which he did on an early episode of the new Mulaney series...

Tantalized by the buzz around James Mangold‘s historical rock drama A Complete Unknown? By the end of the month all you’ll need to see it is a Hulu subscription. It’s been announced for a March 27 streaming debut. The title itself is referring to its subject, Bob Dylan…one of the most iconic rock and roll artists of all time, and certainly not an unknown person. Yet there was a time when nobody knew who Dylan was. He arrived in 1961 New York at just nineteen, hailing from Minnesota, and he knew no one either. As luck would have it, he would not only land bigger and bigger gigs but form friendships along the way with other future music stars, like Pete Seeger and Joan Baez. Timothée Chalamet stars as Bob Dylan, alongside Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook...

Break out the acoustic guitars and tambourines: “A Complete Unknown” will be streaming on Hulu starting next week. The Timothée Chalamet-fronted Bob Dylan biopic has finally set a streaming release date of March 27, when it will be available for all Hulu and Hulu/Disney+ subscribers.
Nominated for eight Oscars including Best Actor and Best Picture, the film charts the early years of Bob Dylan’s rise in the New York City folk scene of the 1960s. The movie chronicles Dylan’s popularity and stardom, and eventual pivot to electric that left many in the folk community feeling burned. I love John Mulaney. I've seen his stand up live several times and practically memorized his comedy specials.
While I am happy he is getting the chance for an ongoing series, this show is painful to watch. I zoned out so many times I thought I had unknowingly taken an edible.
The weekly show is a continuation of his original show, Everybody's in LA. The reboot with a new, fresh title is coming to us because, as Mulaney jokes, everybody hates LA.

Timothée Chalamet is many things. From being an incredible actor to being a film producer, the world is in awe of the Dune star. However, Chalamet can leave acting for good and still have a flourishing career… as a rapper.

Move over, Severance, there’s a new thriller in town.
Oscar and Emmy nominee Brian Tyree Henry stars in Dope Thief, the television debut of screenwriter Peter Craig (you may know him for his work on small indie movies like Top Gun: Maverick and The Batman). Produced by Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott and based on a novel by Dennis Tafoya, the eight-episode crime drama — the first two episodes of which are now streaming on Apple TV+ — follows two longtime friends and petty criminals (Henry and Narcos' Wagner Moura) who make their living by posing as DEA agents and ripping off Philadelphia drug dealers. Following a tip from an acquaintance, the pair attempt to branch out and rob a meth lab in rural Pennsylvania, but they soon discover they've stumbled upon a drug-smuggling operation that is far bigger and much more dangerous than anything they've ever experienced. John Mulaney officially returned to late night this week. After debuting “Everybody’s in LA” during Netflix’s comedy festival last year, the comedian debuted the first installment of his new 12-episode show on Wednesday night.
If you enjoyed “Everybody’s in LA,” it’s safe to say that you’ll like “Everybody’s Live.” Everything from Richard Kind serving as Mulaney’s righthand man to the set and Saymo the robot are back. The show even utilizes its guests in the same way, combining celebrities with industry experts for a free-wheeling conversation. Maybe it’s because of the fourth-wall-breaking clipboard in his hands, but “Everybody’s Live” does feel like a more self-assured version of its predecessor.
Here’s what Mulaney’s new show took from its predecessor and what it will likely continue to explore in the weeks to come.

On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert opened “The Late Show” with a joke about Donald Trump’s tariffs. During “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Jimmy Kimmel spoke to Denis Leary about his new Fox sitcom, “Going Dutch.” And over on Netflix, John Mulaney peeped at his neighbors through a telescope.
One of these things is not like the other. Even if the gist of Mulaney’s bit sounds like it might be setting up some sort of game — similar to what “Tonight Show” viewers seem to enjoy — the execution doesn’t deliver Jimmy Fallon’s typical tomfoolery. (Every “neighbor” Mulaney saw was soon attacked by a man with a lamp.) Instead, the discomforting gag further separates “Everybody’s Live” from traditional late-night talk shows, even as it doubles down on what Mulaney already created with his 2024 cult hit, “Everybody’s in L.A.”

Singer-songwriter Joan Baez still has the fierce sense of outrage that’s long fueled her career, and she gave voice to it, however briefly, last night on Netflix’s Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney.
While Mulaney’s talk show is built for humor, Baez prefaced her appearance on the guest couch with a sort of disclaimer. “You said I could say anything I want out here,” Baez said to an agreeable Mulaney. “We’re all here to be silly and have fun, and as long as we recognize the fact that our democracy is going up in flames and we’re being run by a bunch of really incompetent billionaires. John Mulaney returned to Netflix last night with his Everybody’s in L.A., er, Everybody’s Live comedy talk show. The show continues to be a chaotic, occasionally inspired mess — more on that below — but its live nature might be the best reason to stream in real time. Mulaney appears intent on booking eclectic wild cards as guests, and the strategy paid off last night with legendary folk singer and political activist Joan Baez.
Last night’s hour was built around a hodgepodge of celebrities giving live callers advice about lending and borrowing money. After a segment featuring Michael Keaton and a personal finance expert, the panel expanded to bring in Fred Armisen and Baez.
“Joan Baez, it is an honor to have you on this show,” Mulaney began.

“Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” isn’t quite a new show. Instead, the series is the evolution of “Everybody’s in LA,” a pop-up concept — and apparently, trial run — timed to the Netflix Is a Joke festival last year. After producing six episodes in eight days, Mulaney took 10 months to retool the series into something less hyper-regional but no less idiosyncratic.
“10 months is the perfect amount of time to forget how to do this show,” Mulaney joked in his monologue. But the next hour made clear the comedian and his collaborators forgot, and in fact changed, very little from that initial sprint. Richard Kind is still the announcer; the hour’s centerpiece is still an expanding panel pairing celebrities with non-famous experts in their field; Mulaney still asks callers what kind of car they drive, because while everybody may no longer be in LA, he certainly is. Late night talk shows may never be the same. This is a sentiment that was uttered by yours truly when comedian John Mulaney debuted his experimental late-night special on Netflix last year, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A.” An offbeat and quirky inclusion to the “Netflix as a Joke” series, Mulaney’s entrance into what was once considered a network television stranglehold is morphing on streaming seemingly by the day. Though it was a six-episode special for Netflix, Mulaney’s star power behind the desk has convinced the streamer to give him a more permanent solution.
Enter “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney,” the newest addition to late night talk show options that gives the comedian the space to do what he does best: Talk and ask questions. Accompanied by Mulaney’s trusted announcer, fellow comedian Richard Kind, the new series debuted on Netflix Wednesday and has already been renewed for a second season.

John Mulaney returns to Netflix live Wednesday, but this time with his own late-night talk show.
The self-deprecating, stand-up comedian joked his 12-week talk show “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” is “absolutely nothing new” but is still worth tuning in for live on the streamer.
“We will have a host in a suit taking calls from viewers. It’s Netflix’s commitment to embracing the 20th century,” Mulaney said during January’s Next on Netflix event. “There is absolutely nothing new about what I’m doing but, by taking a lot of elements other people have already done and doing them out of order, it feels new and that’s what’s important.”
The series comes after the success of “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” which aired for a brief six-episode run during the 2024 Netflix is A Joke Festival. Richard Kind will return for the new installment of the series as the its announcer.

John Mulaney is obviously known for his stand-up comedy, his occasional acting roles and for the time that he needlessly defamed the entire “horse in a hospital” industry.
This week, Mulaney will be live on Netflix, premiering the new iteration of his unhinged talk show, which ran for six episodes last year. Like 2024’s Everybody’s in L.A., Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney will feature celebrity guests, as well as phone calls from viewers. One of this week’s guests is legendary folk singer Joan Baez, meaning that there’s a non-zero chance that Mulaney will field another call from friend of the show “Bob Dylan.”
But before all that, a lot of people first found out about Mulaney because of Saturday Night Live, where he worked as a writer, sometimes popping up on camera to, say, rant about the availability of Girl Scout Cookies.

If there's one thing you need to know about me, it's that I love hating on music biopics. To me, they all just feel like "Walk Hard" without jokes, and I find the genre exhausting; it also feels relevant to say here that "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," another pitch-perfect parody of music biopics, is one of my favorite movies of all time. I also think actors should, for the most part, stop winning Oscars for doing extended impressions of people who already exist, because I think creating a character from whole cloth is way more interesting than just doing, like, a really long "Saturday Night Live" bit. That's why I cannot believe what I'm about to write, which is ... Timothée Chalamet should have won the Oscar for playing a young Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown."
I'm shocked by my own opinion on this, but I'm going to go...

Zoe Saldaña won the Oscar for supporting actress for her role as an attorney for a cartel leader in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” and paid tribute to the cast and her own family in an emotional speech.
Saldaña shouted out the “Emilia Pérez” cast in her Oscar acceptance speech, saying “Thank you to the Academy, for recognizing the quiet heroism and the power in a woman like Rita, and talking about powerful women. Jacques, you are a beloved character in my life. Thank you for taking the interest. Thank you for being so curious about these women to tell this story. To my cast and my crew of ‘Emilia Perez,’ I’m sharing this award with you.”
Saldaña then spoke emotionally about her family and her grandmother, tearing up during her speech. “My grandmother came to this country in 1961 — I am a proud child of immigrant parents,” she said.

Timothée Chalamet immersed himself completely into the work of Bob Dylan for years to prepare for “A Complete Unknown,” the James Mangold-directed biopic that is up for eight Oscars and has grossed over $120 million at the box office. Now Chalamet could become the youngest Best Actor winner ever if he scores the Oscar win like he did the SAG Award, but plenty are surely wondering where to watch “A Complete Unknown” if they haven’t seen the Bob Dylan movie yet.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Is “A Complete Unknown” streaming?
Not yet, but a streaming release date is imminent. Monica Barbaro’s Oscar-nominated performance has put the spotlight on Joan Baez, who was once in love with the famous Bob Dylan. When Baez and Dylan met in 1962, she had already appeared on the Time magazine cover and he was just getting introduced to the New York folk scene. They dated for three years. When Dylan became popular, he broke up with her.

Last February, Zendaya stepped onto the red carpet of the “Dune: Part Two” premiere as a metal-constructed cyborg. While robots are banned in the Frank Herbert-created “Dune” universe, the futuristic Thierry Mugler catsuit she wore was a look straight from the year 10,191 — and a clear nod to the sci-fi film’s themes about emerging technology.
“Method dressing” — when an actor represents their film through their clothing — hit the stratosphere when Margot Robbie exclusively wore pink during the “Barbie” press tour. So when famed stylist Law Roach transformed his favorite muse into a fembot with that “Dune”-inspired outfit a full awards season later, it was a sign that the trend was here to stay.

The 97th Academy Awards are fast approaching, and let’s be honest, everyone’s got their eyes on the big names—Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin. Both have been sweeping the precursor awards and are almost guaranteed to take home their respective Best Supporting trophies. However, I’m not entirely convinced that these two are a done deal just yet.
Sure, their performances have been impressive, but something about this year’s race feels a bit… too predictable.
Zoe Saldaña in Emilia Pérez | Netflix
Saldaña has certainly been the one to beat, racking up almost every major award leading up to the Oscars, but I have to say, Monica Barbaro’s performance in A Complete Unknown has quietly stolen my attention. It’s raw, it’s real, and there’s a subtlety to it that could easily catch the Academy’s eye in the final moments.

What’s Bad: The film feels afraid of going deeper in any direction, and in the end, Bob Dylan, and the rest of the characters, remain as unknown figures.
Loo Break: The film is pretty tight when it comes to its pacing, and most scenes are important as they are based on events that truly happened.

Monica Barbaro’s performance as Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown has captured the attention of both critics and fans alike. Her performance seems to outshine even the talented Timothée Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the movie. While Chalamet is undeniably a star in his own right, it’s Barbaro’s larger-than-life portrayal of Baez that steals the spotlight.

Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

"The little woman wrote giant works of art." Greenwich Ent, has revealed the official trailer for a music biopic documentary film titled Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, made by doc filmmaker Varda Bar-Kar. This first premiered at Doc NYC last year and opens in US theaters at the end of March this spring. The life and songbook of Janis Ian mirrored the awakening of American women in the 1960s & '70s, as they found their voices and embraced their power during this time of change. In the 1960s, as a teenager, acclaimed American singer-songwriter Janis Ian used to jam with Jimi Hendrix in Greenwich Village bars and partied with Janis Joplin, who jokingly called herself "the other Janis." She later befriended Bruce Springsteen as they simultaneously recorded albums at the same studio. In the 80s, she played duets with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson in Nashville. She lived the adventurous life of a rock star.

The Oscar Volleys are back for some post-nomination talks. Tonight, Nathaniel Rogers and Cláudio Alves discuss Best Supporting Actress...
A Complete Unknown | © Searchlight Pictures
Nathaniel: Cláudio it falls on us to discuss Supporting Actress. I thought it only fitting that we approach this as a callback to Supporting Actress Smackdowns of the past, and start the hype by discussing their character's introductions. But I could only remember two of them so there goes that idea. I'm beginning this way so as to not bury the lede: I Really don't like the category this year. I would not have been tempted to nominate a single one of these performances even though I like three of them just fine. The fact that I've already forgotten how they're introduced in the context of their films reinforces the mediocrity of the chosen five. To dispel this immediate negativity (sorry sorry) let's just say...

Based on Elijah Wald’s hour-by-hour countdown Dylan Goes Electric!, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is a quirky, engaging and (thankfully) never reverential biopic that tracks the journey of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) from acoustic folk to rock amplification. Its main concern is music and mimesis: to showcase Chalamet performing the Dylan songbook with a fidelity to the original beyond the vocal range of the lip-synching Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946) or Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).
The imitations are all, as it were, pitch perfect, but they tend to submerge the political dimension to Dylan’s decision to crank up the volume at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965. The gesture was not about electricity but autonomy, the desire of the artist to free himself from the restrictive meters and themes of an agit-prop folk tradition. Heard retrospectively, “It Ain’t Me Babe” is no longer just...

A Complete Unknown has made its impact as a charming and honest look at Bob Dylan's (Timothée Chalamet) early career. The movie is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald. A Complete Unknown follows Dylan's journey from being an up-and-coming musician in New York City and highlights the people like Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) and Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro) who influenced him along the way.
