How does one bring something fresh to the late-night genre? According to John Mulaney, it seems the best way to go about it is to both embrace and ignore all that came before, but more importantly, to not get hung up on who you’re trying to appeal to today. In an industry that has become so beholden to algorithms, Mulaney believes the only way to cut through is to just not care about cutting through. Speaking in a recent interview with Vulture, the “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” host went into detail about what drives his creative process and his hopes for his wild, unwieldy talk show.

“Whether something’s good or people like it is so ephemeral,” said Mulaney. “If they could possibly predict it with data, they’d have more hits. I don’t mean Netflix. I mean everybody.”

I love John Mulaney. I've seen his stand up live several times and practically memorized his comedy specials.

While I am happy he is getting the chance for an ongoing series, this show is painful to watch. I zoned out so many times I thought I had unknowingly taken an edible.

The weekly show is a continuation of his original show, Everybody's in LA. The reboot with a new, fresh title is coming to us because, as Mulaney jokes, everybody hates LA.

John Mulaney officially returned to late night this week. After debuting “Everybody’s in LA” during Netflix’s comedy festival last year, the comedian debuted the first installment of his new 12-episode show on Wednesday night.

If you enjoyed “Everybody’s in LA,” it’s safe to say that you’ll like “Everybody’s Live.” Everything from Richard Kind serving as Mulaney’s righthand man to the set and Saymo the robot are back. The show even utilizes its guests in the same way, combining celebrities with industry experts for a free-wheeling conversation. Maybe it’s because of the fourth-wall-breaking clipboard in his hands, but “Everybody’s Live” does feel like a more self-assured version of its predecessor.

On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert opened “The Late Show” with a joke about Donald Trump’s tariffs. During “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” Jimmy Kimmel spoke to Denis Leary about his new Fox sitcom, “Going Dutch.” And over on Netflix, John Mulaney peeped at his neighbors through a telescope.

One of these things is not like the other. Even if the gist of Mulaney’s bit sounds like it might be setting up some sort of game — similar to what “Tonight Show” viewers seem to enjoy — the execution doesn’t deliver Jimmy Fallon’s typical tomfoolery. (Every “neighbor” Mulaney saw was soon attacked by a man with a lamp.) Instead, the discomforting gag further separates “Everybody’s Live” from traditional late-night talk shows, even as it doubles down on what Mulaney already created with his 2024 cult hit, “Everybody’s in L.A.”

While Mulaney’s talk show is built for humor, Baez prefaced her appearance on the guest couch with a sort of disclaimer. “You said I could say anything I want out here,” Baez said to an agreeable Mulaney. “We’re all here to be silly and have fun, and as long as we recognize the fact that our democracy is going up in flames and we’re being run by a bunch of really incompetent billionaires. While Baez didn’t identify the “incompetent billionaires,” the statement wasn’t lost on anybody. In fact, she later mentioned that she once owned – and hated – a Tesla. “I hated that thing,” Baez...

The show continues to be a chaotic, occasionally inspired mess — more on that below — but its live nature might be the best reason to stream in real time. This is a sentiment that was uttered by yours truly when comedian John Mulaney debuted his experimental late-night special on Netflix last year, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A.” An offbeat and quirky inclusion to the “Netflix as a Joke” series, Mulaney’s entrance into what was once considered a network television stranglehold is morphing on streaming seemingly by the day. Though it was a six-episode special for Netflix, Mulaney’s star power behind the desk has convinced the streamer to give him a more permanent solution.

The self-deprecating, stand-up comedian joked his 12-week talk show “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney” is “absolutely nothing new” but is still worth tuning in for live on the streamer.

If there's one thing you need to know about me, it's that I love hating on music biopics. To me, they all just feel like "Walk Hard" without jokes, and I find the genre exhausting; it also feels relevant to say here that "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping," another pitch-perfect parody of music biopics, is one of my favorite movies of all time. I also think actors should, for the most part, stop winning Oscars for doing extended impressions of people who already exist, because I think creating a character from whole cloth is way more interesting than just doing, like, a really long "Saturday Night Live" bit. That's why I cannot believe what I'm about to write, which is ... Timothée Chalamet should have won the Oscar for playing a young Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown."

Bob Dylan is one of the most important figures in all of rock music. And now, over 60 years into his career, he’s the subject of the new biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet.

Timothée’s performance is already getting buzz, and it seems likely that the movie will be a hit! The James Mangold-directed film is set in the first half of the 60s, chronicling Bob’s arrival in New York up until his 1965 Newport Folk Festival appearance.

The movie is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2024, and critics are already starting to praise Timothée’s portrayal of Bob. The trailer for the film gave fans a sneak peak in October 2024.

Zoe Saldaña won the Oscar for supporting actress for her role as an attorney for a cartel leader in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” and paid tribute to the cast and her own family in an emotional speech.

Saldaña shouted out the “Emilia Pérez” cast in her Oscar acceptance speech, saying “Thank you to the Academy, for recognizing the quiet heroism and the power in a woman like Rita, and talking about powerful women. Jacques, you are a beloved character in my life. Thank you for taking the interest. Thank you for being so curious about these women to tell this story. To my cast and my crew of ‘Emilia Perez,’ I’m sharing this award with you.”

Saldaña then spoke emotionally about her family and her grandmother, tearing up during her speech. “My grandmother came to this country in 1961 — I am a proud child of immigrant parents,” she said.

Timothée Chalamet immersed himself completely into the work of Bob Dylan for years to prepare for “A Complete Unknown,” the James Mangold-directed biopic that is up for eight Oscars and has grossed over $120 million at the box office. Now Chalamet could become the youngest Best Actor winner ever if he scores the Oscar win like he did the SAG Award, but plenty are surely wondering where to watch “A Complete Unknown” if they haven’t seen the Bob Dylan movie yet.

Is “A Complete Unknown” streaming?

Not yet, but a streaming release date is imminent. The film hit theaters on Christmas and since it’s a Searchlight Pictures release, it will be streaming on Hulu likely around 90 days after it first opened. Monica Barbaro’s Oscar-nominated performance has put the spotlight on Joan Baez, who was once in love with the famous Bob Dylan. The 97th Academy Awards are fast approaching, and let’s be honest, everyone’s got their eyes on the big names—Zoe Saldaña and Kieran Culkin. Loo Break: The film is pretty tight when it comes to its pacing, and most scenes are important as they are based on events that truly happened.

Watch or Not?: If you are a fan of Bob Dylan or Timothée Chalamet, then this is a must-watch, but don’t expect too much out of this classic biopic.

I thought it only fitting that we approach this as a callback to Supporting Actress Smackdowns of the past, and start the hype by discussing their character's introductions. But I could only remember two of them so there goes that idea. I'm beginning this way so as to not bury the lede: I Really don't like the category this year. Based on Elijah Wald’s hour-by-hour countdown Dylan Goes Electric!, James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown is a quirky, engaging and (thankfully) never reverential biopic that tracks the journey of Bob Dylan (Timothée Chalamet) from acoustic folk to rock amplification. Its main concern is music and mimesis: to showcase Chalamet performing the Dylan songbook with a fidelity to the original beyond the vocal range of the lip-synching Larry Parks in The Jolson Story (1946) or Rami Malek in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018).

The imitations are all, as it were, pitch perfect, but they tend to submerge the political dimension to Dylan’s decision to crank up the volume at the Newport Folk Festival on July 25, 1965.
