One time, on "Happy Days," Henry Winkler's Arthur Fonzarelli jumped over a shark while waterskiing. During one episode of "How I Met Your Mother," Josh Radnor and Cobie Smulders' characters Ted Mosby and Robin Scherbatsky start flying at the end of an episode. In "The Big Bang Theory," Howard Wolowitz, Simon Helberg's character (that he almost didn't audition for), goes to space at the end of the show's fifth season and spends a handful of episodes up there in season 6.
I should say that the situation on "The Big Bang Theory" isn't quite as ridiculous as either of those first examples, even though it sounds just as far-fetched as leaping over a shark's fin in midair. Also, to be absolutely fair here, the production staff of "The Big Bang Theory" went to extreme lengths to make Howard's journey to the International Space Station look legitimate. In a 2022 article on Space.com,...

Garry Marshall's "Happy Days" was one of the biggest sitcoms of the 1970s. The series premiered on ABC at the outset of 1974, arriving on the heels of George Lucas' "American Graffiti," which also exploited Baby Boomer nostalgia for hanging out with friends at the local malt shop and cruising the boulevard. Indeed, "Happy Days" and "American Graffiti" were tightly intertwined; Lucas cast Ron Howard on the strength of his performance in the pilot, while the success of the film convinced ABC to give Marshall's series a 16-episode order as a midseason replacement.
Howard's connection to "American Graffiti" made him the biggest name on the show, but he was soon overshadowed by his co-star Henry Winkler, who skyrocketed to television fame as good-hearted greaser Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli. Viewers loved Fonzie's catchphrases, and the fact that he was so cool he could inexplicably fire up the jukebox just by giving it a sharp whap.

When sitcoms keep bringing in consistent ratings, especially an era-defining example like "Happy Days," it's almost impossible for a network executive to fully give it up. The comedy series ran from 1974 to 1984 over 11 seasons, culminating in an impressive 255 episode run. One of the issues that comes with a show that stays on the air for that long, however, is its inevitable fatigue. After Henry Winkler's big water stunt in the show's fifth season, the phrase "jumping the shark" became an integral part of the cultural lexicon to describe a show that's approached the ceiling on its creative output. But it's not always the audience that loses interest in a show's viability.
A central cast member leaving a beloved long-running sitcom before it finishes is basically a television tradition. Topher Grace left "That '70s Show" before its final season, Steve Carell exited "The Office" at the end of its seventh season,...

Julia Stiles has spoken about her experience working on Down to You and how Harvey Weinstein’s involvement altered the film. During an appearance on the Films To Be Buried With podcast, Stiles described how reshoots pushed by Weinstein forced her into a dance scene that she felt was unnecessary.
“It was a time when teen rom-coms were really popular,” Stiles said. “The director [Kris Isacsson] wrote the script. He was a first-time director and a very, very intelligent, capable guy. The script was very good. And then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend. And it just became dumb.”
The actress recalled being told that, due to the success of Save the Last Dance and 10 Things I Hate About You, Weinstein wanted her to perform a dance sequence. “They’re pouring money at it in stupid ways,” she said. “So when we went and did reshoots,...

When you think back to cinema in the 1990s, there's a lot that the decade had to offer. There were some groundbreaking horror movies, a plethora of action classics, and, of course, a ton of romantic comedies that focused on young adults finding themselves, and each other. Two of the big stars to come out of the decade were undoubtedly Julia Stiles and Freddie Prinze Jr., who were paired together in the year 2000 for the film Down to You, which Stiles now says was completely ruined by disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
Appearing on Brett Goldstein's Films to Be Buried With podcast, Stiles spoke about her time on the set of Down to You, which was directed by Kris Isacsson and starred her and Prinze Jr. as young lovers who meet in college and go through the ups and downs of a relationship. She called the script – which Isacsson also wrote – "very good,...

Henry Winkler has enjoyed an awesome career, especially for his work on the small screen. From "Arrested Development" to "Parks and Recreation" and "Barry," he's shown that he's a natural when it comes to comedy, with his role in the latter having even won him an Emmy Award. However, for many fans, he'll always be known as the lovable greaser Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli from the hit ABC sitcom "Happy Days" -- a role Winkler has admittedly worked hard to move past since the show ended in 1984.
While the role of The Fonz turned the actor into a household name, "Happy Days" was arguably a curse for Winkler. The "Happy Days" star struggled to find work after the show ended because he was typecast. Nevertheless, he remained adamant about escaping the sitcom's shadow. In fact, as he once explained during an interview with The Albuquerque Tribune, he rejected a Fonzie-centered spin-off...

Julia Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein’s “Films to Be Buried With” podcast and remembered feeling “slimy” when she was forced to perform a dance scene in the 2000 rom-com “Down to You” after Harvey Weinstein took control of the production. Stiles said Weinstein ruined the movie.
“Down to You” paired Stiles with Freddie Prinze Jr. in the story of two college students who fall for each other and have an up-and-down romance. The movie was made during the teen rom-com boom, when both actors became icons of the year prior thanks to the hits “She’s All That” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” Stiles called Prinze a “lovely, wonderful actor” and said the “Down to You” script was “very good. From spy spoofs to hitmen with a heart, these action-packed comedies bring the same chaos and laughs as ‘Deli Boys.’
Hulu’s “Deli Boys” is exactly the kind of action-comedy I love - fast, funny, and in a world that’s “the same but different.” If you haven’t checked it out yet, the show follows two Pakistani-American brothers who inherit their late father’s deli, only to realize he was secretly a crime boss. What starts as a simple inheritance quickly spirals into a wild ride full of gangsters, high-stakes deals, and a whole lot of absurdity. And if you’re anything like me, once you start a great action-comedy, you tear through it way too fast.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of shows that bring the same mix of action, humor, and off-the-wall energy. It’s one of my favorite genres - I even put together a list...

You can spend a year developing and fine-tuning a television sitcom to the point where everything feels calibrated to hit precisely as you've intended, and then watch dumbstruck as viewers unexpectedly fall so hard for a supporting character that you wonder if you built the series around the wrong actor. This happened to Garry Marshall during the first two seasons of "Happy Days," when it became clear that Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, the motorcycle-riding tough guy written as an offbeat foil to the series' protagonist Richie Cunningham, had become a pop culture phenomenon. As portrayed by Henry Winkler, people either wanted to be him or be with him.
ABC was so hot for Fonzie that they considered rechristening the series as "Fonzie's Happy Days" (an idea that nearly prompted Ron Howard to walk off the show). Ultimately, Marshall figured out how to make sure no one person dominated the sitcom, but...

Three years ago, the world of comedy lost a true original. Gilbert Gottfried may have been best known for playing the parrot Iago in Aladdin — and for the dirty jokes he spouted in the last two decades of his career — but his style of comedy was entirely his own. His stand-up material, which he began performing at age 15, was a surreal experience filled with obscure — often, even, unknowable — pop-culture references combined with bizarre rants about aliens and Nazis.
He hit the mainstream with a one-year stint on Saturday Night Live before appearing in films like Problem Child and Beverly Hills Cop II as well lending his voice to hundreds of cartoons. He never stopped doing stand-up either, as he was a fixture in comedy clubs and a frequent panelist at Friars Club and Comedy Central roasts. Just weeks after the terrorist attacks in 2001, he famously bombed with a 9/11 joke at a Hugh Hefner roast,...

Matt Damon would love to be in a potential Arrested Development movie, should it ever move forward. Jason Bateman, who played Michael Bluth on the hilarious show, recently said he was at an award show when Damon pitched himself to appear in a film version. The twist? Damon wanted to play Bluth in a movie-within-the-movie.
While appearing on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast (via Deadline), Bateman made the revelation:
"I remember Matt Damon coming up to me at — I think it was like the Golden Globes or something — and I was so excited to meet him, and he was a huge fan of 'Arrested Development. Jason Bateman remembers the “Arrested Development” film that almost came to be. Bateman said during a recent appearance on the “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast, which you can see in the below video, that Matt Damon was interested in the project at one point. The only downside? Now, nobody “gives a shit” about bringing the film to the screen.
“Arrested Development” series ran from 2003 to 2006 on Fox and was later revived by Netflix for two additional seasons between 2013 and 2019. In the series, Bateman played Michael Bluth, who is tasked with running his eccentric family’s real estate empire after his father (Jeffrey Tambor) is arrested. Michael Cera played Bateman’s onscreen son, with Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, and Tony Hale as his siblings. Late actress Jessica Walter iconically played the boozy family matriarch Lucille. David Cross, Alia Shawkat, Henry Winkler, and Liza Minnelli co-starred.

“I remember Matt Damon coming up to me at — I think it was like a Golden Globes or something — and I was so excited to meet him and, and he was a huge fan of Arrested Development,” Bateman recalled of the interaction. “And he was saying, ‘You know, I really think I could play, because I hear you guys are doing the movie, I think I could… can I play you?'”

Pigeons Frank (Henry Winkler) and Bobby (Steve Buscemi) are joined by a squirrel named Tammy (Kristen Schaal) in DirecTV’s latest ad campaign. (Courtesy image)
DirecTV has introduced a new character in its national TV spots running as part of the company’s “For the Birds” campaign.
Joining pigeons Frank (voiced by Henry Winkler) and Bobby (Steve Buscemi) is a hyper squirrel named Tammi (Kristen Schaal), who wonders if DirecTV’s ability to display content from linear channels available in its DirecTV via Internet packages alongside streaming video recommendations from supported apps is based on “uncanny content recommendations based on your watch history, or mind control?!”
The hyper squirrel isn’t the first to interrupt Frank and Bobby while they watch TV through an apartment window: In August, DirecTV tapped famed National Football League (NFL) wide receiver Deion Sanders to voice “Coach,” a buff pigeon who spoke with admiration about...

As a born and bred New Yorker, Steve Buscemi is very familiar with a certain segment of the city’s population — pigeons. So he didn’t have to dive too deeply into research to prepare for voicing his role as Bobby, an “outspoken and sarcastic” bird opposite Winkler’s “even-tempered and optimistic” Frank in an ongoing campaign for DirecTV called “For the Birds.”
“He just seems very New York to me,” Buscemi told The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s used to living. He doesn’t exactly live on the street, but instead lives a lot on rooftops. He’s probably very old school and doesn’t really welcome change too easily. He’s set in his ways but I think he’s got a good pigeon heart. He appreciates having a buddy like Frank even though Frank sometimes annoys him, but he’s a good friend nonetheless.”

Although Henry Winkler has starred in countless movies and TV shows over the course of his long career, for most viewers he will always be known as The Fonz. Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli, the most popular character from the '70s sitcom "Happy Days," was the breakout role that made Winkler a household name. It was also the role that ruined his life. Well, sort of; as Winkler explained in a 2023 interview with Today, there were some downsides to playing such a beloved character, and that was before his character invented the concept of "jumping the shark."
"There were eight or nine years at a time when I couldn't get hired because I was 'The Fonz,' because I was typecast," Winkler said. "I had psychic pain that was debilitating because I didn't know what to do. I didn't know where to find it, whatever it was, I didn't know what I was going to do.

Many actors have a sliding doors moment in their career when they pass up a choice role in a soon-to-be iconic movie. For some, it isn't a huge deal. Denzel Washington, for example, already had two Oscar nominations and one win under his belt by the time he decided he didn't want to star in David Fincher's "Se7en." Sure, he later came to regret turning away one of the defining films of the '90s, but he was already an established star and would be just fine without it. That isn't always the case when an actor hasn't quite built up the body of work to go around rejecting great parts –- just take Henry Winkler and Danny Zuko in "Grease."

Variety reports that Jac Schaeffer, creator of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, has been tapped to direct the pilot for Holes. Based on the best-selling book by Louis Sachar, the new TV series will focus on a teenage girl who “is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.“
The original Holes novel follows “the story of Stanley Yelnats, an unlucky boy who is sent to a juvenile detention camp for a crime he did not commit. Now incarcerated at Camp Green Lake, Stanley is forced to spend his days digging holes in a dry lake bed. But as the story unfolds, Stanley discovers that both his own story and the story of his family are more connected to Camp Green Lake than he could have ever imagined.” The book was previously adapted into a feature film in 2003, which starred Shia Labeouf,...

Before it was "Happy Days," one of the most ubiquitous sitcoms of the '70s was almost called "Cool." Series creator Garry Marshall, who died in 2016, once revealed as much in a retrospective with The Guardian, where he also shared the strange reason the title didn't work out.
Some of the problems with the proposed name are obvious; if audiences are told something is cool before they even see it, won't that make it uncool? Even though Henry Winkler's leather-jacket-clad scene-stealer The Fonz was eventually seen as the epitome of cool for a whole generation of viewers, I imagine that pitching the sweet, cheesy series as "Cool" from day one could have backfired. It might have come across as trying too hard or, well, jumping the shark.
According to Marshall, though, the problem with the title had nothing to do with its implications and everything to do with period-specific branding.

It doesn't take a lot for audiences to turn against a movie or television show. It's more common for folks to watch things from the comfort of their own home, as opposed to heading all the way to the theater and paying ridiculous prices for tickets and snacks, so the barrier between staying engaged and turning something off is more fragile than ever.
It's even more apparent nowadays when viewers end up soured on a popular series or franchise just from the sheer terribleness of one scene. It may seem like an exaggeration to say one scene can completely ruin an entire project for most people, but it's usually how we end up with the most disappointing movies of a given year. With all the content available at the click of a button, viewers don't want to waste their time with things that fall below expectations.

Sometimes even the best television shows are victims of their own success, running longer than their natural story should at the expense of their overall quality. From will-they/won't-they romances fulfilled too quickly or the show trying to prolong its central conflicts and mysteries, popular shows try to artificially draw out their narratives to maintain audiences. This leaves even the most ardent fans of a given show acknowledging that there are lesser seasons missing the magic that made the series so successful. A perfect show knows when to call it quits before it overstays its welcome, but very few of them can take that hint.
Simply put, even many beloved shows just try to milk the last bit of success they can, even after enduring changes to their overarching plot or main cast. In doing so, the legacy of these prolonged series is a bit tarnished from their previous esteemed status.

For much of its 11-season run on ABC, "Happy Days" was one of the most popular shows on network television. Set during the 1950s, the sitcom shamelessly catered to Baby Boomer nostalgia, but also connected strongly with Gen X-ers who enjoyed the antics of its appealing young cast. The music, fashion, and fads might have belonged to their parents, but kids could easily relate to the Cunninghams' lovingly contentious family dynamic, as well as the high-school tumult faced by Richie (Ron Howard), Ralph (Donny Most), and Potsie (Anson Williams).
So, it might come as a surprise to learn that the series was teetering on the brink of cancellation when, after a promising debut season that ranked 16th in the Nielsen ratings, it hemorrhaged viewers and finished 49th after its second season. When creator Gerry Marshall was given a third season to right the ship, he turned the show into a...

As the European Film Market kicks off Feb. 13 in Berlin with a new market head, Tanja Meissner, at the helm, this year’s buzziest titles suggest the industry will be looking toward tried-and-true genre fare and splashy, star-driven packages to thaw the winter chill.
Bankable stars are expected to heat things up in Berlin, with Ari Aster and A24’s “Eddington”, Guy Ritchie’s “Wife & Dog”, Ernest Dickerson’s untitled hitman thriller and Kantemir Balagov’s “Butterfly Jam” showcasing how marquee names remain a safe bet as uncertainty continues to reign in the theatrical market.
On the genre side of things, horror is still expected to scare up sales, with buyers looking to sink their fangs into Isabelle Huppert’s 16th-century vampire mystery “The Blood Countess” and Jacob Chase’s killer canine genre-bender “Bad Boy,” starring Ke Huy Quan and Lili Reinhart. Being the first in anything might be a momentous achievement, but it also comes with the baggage and burden of representing a whole group of people. For Marlee Matlin, that burden came at the tender age of 21, when she became the first deaf actor to win the Academy Award for her performance in Children of a Lesser God. Now, almost 40 years later, Matlin looks back at her life, career, and the progress of deaf actors in the industry. Director Shoshannah Stern looks closely at Matlin's life with the actress and chronicles the highlights and low points of her career alongside family members, friends like Henry Winkler and interpreter Jack Jason, and colleagues like Troy Kotsur and Aaron Sorkin. In Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, we get an intimate look into Matlin's perspective on the span of her career, her reaction to her life-changing Oscar win, her relationship with the deaf community,...

Garry Marshall's sitcom "Happy Days" debuted on ABC in 1974, and it quickly became a fulcrum in popular culture. Marshall's show was set in the 1950s and served as nostalgia bait for white Boomers who were teens in post-war America. "Happy Days" starred Ron Howard as the innocent teen Richie Cunningham, and followed the wholesome adventures of him and his family. "Happy Days" didn't so much interrogate the 1950s as roll around in them. "Happy Days" spawned five spinoff shows and it ran for 11 seasons.
The standout character on "Happy Days" was, of course, Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler), a gentle greaser, mechanic, and leather-wearing bad boy, who was Richie's best friend. The Fonz, however, wasn't so much a "bad boy" as too cool for the room. Everyone loved the character, and audiences couldn't wait to see him every week.

In her documentary “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” the star continues to explore the at times lonesome space she has occupied since bursting on the scene in 1986: that of being a representative for deaf people, and being herself. For more than three decades, Matlin was the only deaf performer to have won an Oscar, and among the few to have what could be considered a mainstream acting career. That changed when Troy Kotsur, her co-star in the 2021 Oscar-winning drama “Coda,” took home the prize for best supporting actor.
At 19, Matlin was cast opposite William Hurt in the adaptation of the play “Children of a Lesser God.” She portrayed Sarah Norman, a janitor in a school for the deaf. Hurt’s character is a speech teacher. She resists speaking. He says he won’t push her to speak but then does. After production, Hurt became Matlin’s romantic partner. So,...

She was, as she recalls in “Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore,” practically a child. As we learn in this deeply affectionate biographical history, the actress, who is deaf, has already been through a lifetime of challenges. And yet, there were plenty more to come.

When James tried to reboot his sitcom career with Kevin Can Wait, he soon discovered he didn’t have much chemistry with his new TV wife Erinn Hayes. With little thought to public reaction, James and his producers decided “Why not have Hayes’ character die — off camera — before we start a Season Two?” That’s just what they did, enlisting James’ former TV wife, King of Queens’ Remini, to rekindle some comedy sparks.
