Hollywood’s obsession with established characters and stories didn’t start with endless iterations of Marvel superheroes. From the earliest days of sitcoms, producers tried to cash in on the popularity of hit comedy movies by translating them into weekly television shows. But except for rare occasions — namely, M*A*S*H and What We Do in the Shadows — the imitations rarely live up to the originals.

Here are seven terrible sitcoms that wasted the goodwill of the movies they were based on…

1 Fast Times

Hey, everybody, look who’s back! It’s… Mr. Hand? Ray Walston was a champ as a fed-up teacher in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but a reboot without Sean Penn or Phoebe Cates couldn’t help but disappoint. One horror veteran auteur who hasn't attempted to adapt one of King's works is James Wan, famous for works like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring. In a new appearance on The Kingcast, Wan revealed that the "only" novel for him to adapt is one of King's most ambitious works: The Stand.

Galaxy of Terror lands on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on February 11. Produced by Roger Corman, the Alien-inspired 1981 sci-fi horror film has been newly restored in 4K from the 3mm interpositive with Dolby Vision.

The success of the recent low-budget Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey has led to a number of classic animated tales being given a horror makeover, and Popeye is the latest beloved character to be turned into a bloodthirsty killer for an upcoming indie project.

Described as a "raunchy and gory slasher," it's worth clarifying that ITN’s Popeye is not connected to the Twisted Childhood Universe, aka the "Poohniverse."

The Bait: A Meta Slasher That Should Be a Genre Standard

There comes a time in every internet writer’s life when they must make the dreaded Public Apology. For me, this is that day, and to my beloved After Dark loyalists, I am sorry. You’ll have to excuse me for not crying on camera, but the tragedy of the truth is too much to bear: “Popcorn” is unavailable to stream.

There is a general aesthetic rule in animation, often stressed in animation schools, called the silhouette principle. The idea is that an animator, when designing a character, should endeavor to create something that can instantly be recognized in silhouette. Think of a character like Bart Simpson. Even if presented completely in shadow, Bart is instantly recognizable. Same with Fred Flintstone, Speed Racer, or Invader Zim. 

When it comes to color, there is a similar principle one might learn in similar classes. If a character is associated with a certain color scheme, it's important to consistently repeat that color scheme. This is certainly a rule that pertains to superheroes; Superman always requires a blue suit, a red cape, red boots, and a yellow belt in the middle. The Stephen King TV adaptations of the 90s have their legion of fans despite the varying qualities. The most famous mini-series of the bunch is the 1990 adaptation of It with Tim Curry in one of his many cultural defining roles as Pennywise. Many other adaptations include Storm of the Century and The Langoliers. One of the adaptations that has a cult following is the TV adaptation of The Stand from 1994. In the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "In the Flesh" the U.S.S. Voyager encounters a mysterious space station that contains a perfect simulation of Starfleet Academy back on Earth. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) is suspicious of the simulation, and some investigation finds that the "humans" she encounters inside are actually genetically altered members of Species 8472, vicious aliens from an alternate dimension full of fluid. Species 8472 is convinced that humans intend to invade their dimension and take over, and they are using simulations to better know a potential enemy.

Bill Hayes, the actor and singer who with his real-life wife, Susan Seaforth Hayes, starred on NBC’s Days of Our Lives as the beloved first couple of daytime television, died Friday in Los Angeles, a rep from the show told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 98.

Before he was known as a soap opera legend, Hayes was a regular on Sid Caesar‘s famed live TV variety program Your Show of Shows, and in 1955 he had the No. 1 song in America, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett.”

He also partnered in a nightclub act with future Brady Bunch star Florence Henderson; they were known as “The Singing Sweethearts” and sang about Oldsmobiles on TV commercials, many of them performed live.

Hayes joined Days of Our Lives to play con artist/lounge singer Doug Williams in February 1970. Seaforth Hayes, who portrayed the spoiled heiress Julie Olsen Banning Anderson Williams, had joined the show 15 months earlier.

Amy Heckerling's 1982 film "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," written by Cameron Crowe, is a coming-of-age film that contains far more embarrassment and ambivalence about the teen experience than any expected notes of wistful nostalgia. The Ridgemont High students don't always make good decisions and find themselves stumbling toward sexual liberation and an adult sense of agency. They are trying to achieve some sense of dignity, which is difficult when your sexual encounters are mortifying and you have to wear stupid costumes to your minimum-wage job. They're not good kids or bad kids. They're complete people. It's the film's sense of emotional honesty that likely has it firmly ensconced in the pop consciousness. It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 1991 slasher that had a rather troubled production but still managed to gain a solid cult following. The movie is Popcorn (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.

Christina Ricci has been a mainstay in Hollywood for 30 years, breaking out due to The Addams Family movies of the 1990s. Perfecting the role to differentiate it from previous portrayals of the character, she is still synonymous with the character to this day, so it isn't shocking that she will be appearing in Wednesday, a new show focusing on the character, coming to Netflix on November 23rd.

Two years after winning his first Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for his portrayal of Cory Ellison on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” Billy Crudup has earned another TV academy notice for his work on the program’s second season. Casting director and producer Don Phillips, who helped launch the careers of such actors as Sean Penn, Matthew McConaughey and Mary Steenburgen, passed away on Thanksgiving Day from natural causes. He would have turned 81 on Dec. 21.

Phillips received his first break when he landed an entry-level job in the casting department of filmmaker Otto Preminger’s 1971 movie Such Good Friends. Impressed by Phillips, Preminger took an ad in Variety and Backstage to praise the novice’s work on the film.

The acknowledgement led to Phillips getting hired to do extras casting on Sidney Lumet’s Serpico starring Al Pacino with his job subsequently expanding to casting the entire film. Lumet then tapped him as casting director on his next film, Dog Day Afternoon, also starring Pacino. Phillips is credited with holding out for actor John Cazale to be cast opposite Pacino as Sal.

In celebration of its 35th anniversary, the 1986 BMX racing film, Rad returns to theaters for one-night-only courtesy of Fathom Events and Utopia. Featuring a new 35th anniversary restoration, the film stars Bill Allen (Cru Jones), Lori Loughlin (Christian Hollings), Talia Shire (Mrs. Jones), Jack Weston (Duke Best), and Ray Walston (Burton Timmer), along with 1984 Olympic gymnastics champion Bart Connor (Bart Taylor). Hot Streak: Peter Dinklage was the last actor to earn back-to-back wins in the Best Supporting Actor, Drama category, and that was just a few years ago: 2018-2019. Before that, you have to go back to 1995-1996 to find a repeat winner, when Ray Walston took home two Emmys for “Picket Fences.” Billy Crudup will have a chance to defend his title when “The Morning Show” returns, but he won’t repeat this year, since Season 2 will not be released in time.

Bradley Whitford and John Lithgow have nine Emmys between them, including one each in Best Drama Supporting Actor. Whitford took home his first Emmy in drama supporting actor for “The West Wing” in 2001 on his first of three straight bids. His other wins were for his guest roles on “Transparent” in 2015 and “The Handmaid’s Tale” in 2019, making him the first person to win the comedy and drama guest actor categories. Lithgow’s most recent victory was in drama supporting actor for “The Crown” in 2017. He has three comedy actor statuettes for “3rd Rock From the Sun” and two drama guest ones for “Amazing Stories” in 1986 and “Dexter” in 2010.

Beverly Cleary, who contemporized children’s literature with books like “Ramona the Pest” and “Henry and Beezus” and become one of the best-selling children’s authors of all time, died Thursday. She was 104.

A musical that charms even audiences that don’t like musicals, this adaptation of a big 1955 Broadway hit is noted for capturing much of the original’s power and brilliance — more legendary stage performances should be filmed like this, immortalizing theater history that otherwise disappears into the ether. Gwen Verdon, Ray Walston, Russ Brown and star replacement Tab Hunter shine, yet ‘unknown’ Broadway talent Shannon Bolin and Robert Shafer earn just as much applause. The Verdon-Bob Fosse creative hookup is at its strongest here, complete with a show-stopper of a dance duo. Come to think of it, almost every song in this thing stops the show, like one of Joe Hardy’s home runs: Wow!

“A Mixed Can Of Spinach”

When I first saw Popeye on the big screen on its initial release in December of 1980, I was disappointed and a little appalled. I was (and still am) a huge Robert Altman fan, and I had been expecting great things. The film touted the first motion picture appearance by Robin Williams as well (although he’d had in a small role in a 1977 picture). Anticipation was high.

Popeye received very mixed reviews, but it made a decent amount of money at the box office, and became an object of derision in Hollywood for years. Altman was unable to get big studio backing for over a decade, so he moved to Europe and made small pictures there.

Then—home video turned the movie around. Popeye became a best-selling VHS tape for children, and its reputation improved.

This article contains spoilers for the 1994 miniseries The Stand and likely the 2020 series by extension.

The Stand is considered by many, to this day, to be one of Stephen King’s three or four finest novels. It is certainly among his most beloved by longtime readers, because of its sheer size and the scope and breadth of its storytelling. A hybrid of horror, apocalyptic sci-fi and epic fantasy (King has said he explicitly wanted to create a sort of modern day The Lord of the Rings), it’s an eerie, surreal tale of the fall of civilization and the battle for the souls of those left alive in the aftermath.

A motion picture adaptation was first announced on the back cover of the paperback version of the book (with George A. Romero directing), but to many, a miniseries seemed like the only way to adapt The Stand due to its sheer size.

HBO Max is looking to play The Westing Game, by giving MGM/UA Television a script-to-series order for an adaptation of the Newbery Medal-winning mystery novel.

Written by Ellen Raskin and first published in 1978, The Westing Game follows the bizarre chain of events that unfolds begins when 16 unlikely people gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing’s will. “Though no one knows why the eccentric, game-loving millionaire has chosen a virtual stranger — and a possible murderer — to inherit his vast fortune,” reads the novel’s synopsis, “one thing is for sure: Sam Westing may be dead, but that won’t...

HBO Max has given a script-to-series order to an adaptation of the classic children’s novel “The Westing Game,” the streamer announced Wednesday.

No writer or director is attached to the project, but HBO Max, along with producers MGM Television and Julie Corman, is “currently interviewing” candidates.

First published in 1978, Ellen Raskin’s “The Westing Game” is described as an “ensemble mystery-comedy” surrounding the death of millionaire Samuel Westing. The reading of Westing’s will sets in motion a game for his sixteen heirs unlike any other, the winners of which will walk away with his $200 million fortune.

The novel won the John Newbury Award for children’s literature in 1979 and was ranked number one on the list of the top 100 children’s novels of all time by School Library Journal in 2012.
