Two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender has showcased his phenomenal range as a performer in a slew of celebrated hits, including Inglourious Basterds, 12 Years a Slave, Prometheus, and Steve Jobs, with his latest silver screen project being Steven Soderbergh's critically acclaimed spy thriller Black Bag. In the newly-released 2025 espionage caper, Fassbender stars alongside Cate Blanchett and portrays an intelligence agent who is tasked with discovering whether or not his fellow agent and wife is guilty of committing treason.
Black Bag isn't the first time Fassbender has tried his hand at the gripping thriller genre, as the decorated leading man joined forces with directing legend David Fincher for his 2023 passion project, The Killer. In the sleek and stylish Netflix film, Fassbender knocks it out of the park as an assassin who goes on a revenge-seeking mission after he uncharacteristically botches a hit and sets out to eliminate his adversaries before they get to him first.

In recent decades, American society has developed an obsession with serial killers. Reaching an apex in the early 1990s, the American media significantly contributed to turning serial killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and John Wayne Gacy into celebrities. Oliver Stone's highly controversial film Natural Born Killers put a spotlight on America's obsession with serial killers and the role the media played in this phenomenon.
Currently, one of the most popular entertainment mediums is true crime television shows and documentaries, many of which revolve around serial killers. Cinema, going as far back as the silent era, has always been fascinated with portraying serial killers. Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs, and Se7en rank among the best serial killer movies ever made.

Based on its subject and mass critical panning upon release, no film was suited for a cult revival quite like 8mm. The 1999 crime thriller caught its principal stars and creative figures at inflection points in their careers. Nicolas Cagewas at the peak of his stardom, but the tides were shifting, as his brand of overacting verged into meme territory. On the flip side, Joaquin Phoenixand James Gandolfiniwere on the cusp of becoming household names. If anyone needed to hit the reset button, it was director Joel Schumacher, who was reeling from the fiasco that was Batman & Robin. Luckily, he got hold of a script by Andrew Kevin Walker, hot off the success of Seven, which turned into another grimy, investigative thriller set in the disturbing underworld of hardcore pornography in 8mm, a film that appalled critics but found acceptance with audiences.

The thriller is a broad, often unpredictable genre, each film within it largely defined by a litany of subgenres and genre mash-ups. But whether taking viewers into the far reaches of the future, the unfamiliar throes of eras past, or the depths of a criminal underworld that exists in our present society, what unifies this vast and widely varied category of films is their singular ability to make our hearts race from opening to closing credits.

The following contains spoilers for Se7en. Proceed with caution.
Today and despite one of its star's falls from grace, Se7en is rightly considered to be one of the best crime movies ever made. Directed by David Fincher and written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Se7en was so good and groundbreaking that it redefined what Neo Noir movies and serial killer stories should be in a decade when hard-boiled fiction was suffering from oversaturation. The movie's famously nihilistic ending cemented its legacy, but believe it or not, Se7en almost had a happier but worse conclusion.
As the story goes, Fincher signed up to helm Se7en because he was so impressed by Walker's dark script. This, despite claiming he'd never direct a movie again following his horrible experience with Alien 3. However, New Line Cinema actually sent him Walker's original draft. They then sent the director the updated script,...

Se7en's ensemble would have been led by other A-list Hollywood actors. Director David Fincher said the dark script repelled most candidates including Denzel Washington, who was an early frontrunner.
Director David Fincher said A-list Hollywood actors were tapped to lead the film's ensemble; most thought the script was deplorable. "Almost everybody that I sent it to originally also passed," he told The Independent. "I sent it to Ned Beatty to play John Doe, and he wouldn't even consider it. Almost everyone thought that the film was far too ghoulish to deal with." Val Kilmer was also a candidate but declined, and R. Lee Ermey, who played Full Metal Jacket's iconic villain, was passed over. Denzel Washington was also heavily courted to play David Mills but repeatedly rejected the offer.

When Denzel Washington agreed to star in 2001's "Training Day," his casting attracted some controversy. The issue, it seems, was that the esteemed actor had never played a villain at that time, and the NAACP was adamant that he not squander the good will he'd accumulated over the past decade or so by doing so. For Denzel, however, showcasing his diverse talent overrode any obligation to maintain his clean cut public image, and the star not only proved he was more than capable of playing an antagonist, but won his second Oscar for the effort. All of which makes one wonder about a parallel universe version of Denzel's career — one in which he agreed to play a lead role in David Fincher's "Se7en" back in 1995.

Denzel Washington has been one of the most successful Hollywood actors for nearly five decades. From the iconic Malcolm X to Training Day, Antwone Fisher to Fences, this incredibly versatile actor knows how to avoid being pigeonholed by certain character types. Washington thrives on challenges and frequently returns to the theater to keep his acting muscles as active as possible. In February, Washington will take on the title role in Othello in Shakespeare's classical play, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Broadway.
But despite all his deliberate choices, there is one movie he regrets declining. Years ago, Denzel had a casual interview with Jamie Foxx on YouTube for Grey Goose Vodka, and the comedian asked the legend if there were any project he wished he would have done. There are some details about David Fincher’s Se7en that aren’t explicitly revealed, and one made way for a theory that claims this movie is secretly a superhero villain origin movie from a famous superhero universe. Shortly after making his directorial debut with the sci-fi movie Alien 3, David Fincher paid a visit to the crime thriller genre with Se7en. Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, Se7en didn’t perform well with critics during its initial release and was a sleeper hit. However, Se7en is now regarded as one of the best movies of the 1990s, as well as one of Fincher’s best works.
Set in an unnamed, crime-ridden city, Se7en follows Detective Lt. William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who, one week before he retires, is partnered with young detective David Mills (Brad Pitt). Together they investigate a series of disturbing murders inspired by the seven deadly sins.

When David Fincher directed “Se7en” in 1995, his reputation was strangely bifurcated. On the one hand, he was a supremely successful commercial and music video director at the top of his field, having helmed innovative and influential shorts for icons including Madonna, Sting, and Rick Springfield. On the other, his one attempt at feature filmmaking, “Alien 3,” had been a bust — a critical disappointment liked by virtually no one, including Fincher himself. Although it has since developed a bit of a cult following, Fincher disowned “Alien 3” and famously said that he’d rather die of colon cancer than direct another movie.
Luckily for him, and for us, Fincher changed his mind when he came across Andrew Kevin Walker’s script for “Se7en,” a perfectly calibrated blend of intellectual philosophizing and pulpy exploitation that ended up beautifully served by Fincher’s unerring ability to push the psychic trauma the story inflicted...

David Fincher has worked with the Netflix streaming service on three separate projects so far – the crime thriller TV series Mindhunter, which ran for two seasons; the 2020 biopic Mank, which was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and took home two Oscars (for Best Production Design and Best Cinematography); and the 2023 action thriller The Killer. These movies and the TV show are still available to watch on Netflix, but a lot of fans have been wondering if they’ll ever receive a physical media release… and Fincher doubts that will ever happen.
While discussing the 4K release of his film Se7en with Collider, Fincher was asked if his Netflix projects will ever get a physical release, as “the appetite for that is through the roof.” He answered, “That’s very sweet, but I don’t know. The following article contains spoilers for Se7en.
David Fincher, the director of the iconic serial killer film Se7en, is enjoying the film's 30th anniversary. While celebrating the legacy of the quintessential '90s thriller, Fincher took the time to answer a question that has remained in everybody's minds since we saw it in 1995: What is actually in the box that Detective Somerset opens? Not just in the film, but behind the scenes — what did they use? Not a head, apparently.
First, we'll do some refreshing. In the film, Detectives David Mills and William Somerset are facing a ruthless serial killer who's fascinated with the seven deadly sins and applies the themes to his elaborate murders. However, after the fifth murder, John Doe unexpectedly surrenders to the authorities. There are no bodies for the last two murders, but this doesn't mean Doe's streak is over.

Se7en's cult following had a pretty good idea of what Detective David Mills learned was in that box toward the ending. As for what was really in the box, director David Fincher revealed what they really put inside of it before filming, debunking a longstanding rumor.

David Fincher’s Se7en is all about a series of horrifying murders, but, surprisingly, it only has one on-screen murder, and it wasn’t even committed by John Doe (Kevin Spacey). Back in 1995, David Fincher brought the crime thriller Se7en, written by Andrew Kevin Walker. Although it wasn’t the critics’ favorite during its release, Se7en became a sleeper hit and was a box-office success. As happens with many movies, time has been good for Se7en, and it’s now regarded as one of the best movies of the decade, of Fincher’s career, and has been praised for its tone, plot twist, and performances.

The closing lines of David Fincher’s 1995 crime thriller Se7en reveal the bleak yet humane position that Morgan Freeman’s Detective Somerset takes after he witnesses a truly heartbreaking moment with his partner Detective Mills, played by Brad Pitt. Freeman says, “The world is a fine place and is worth fighting for. I agree with the second part.”
The bleak ending is preceded by Pitt’s discovery that his wife, played by Gwyneth Paltrow has been killed, and her dismembered head has been sent to him in a box. Alien and Aliens confirmed a franchise was building, but that momentum was dashed by a divisive third film. Director David Fincher explained how Alien 3 made him the avant-garde filmmaker he is today.
Alien 3 has its cult following, but the film is largely panned as a disappointing sequel in the series. David Fincher was reserved when speaking about his experience directing that film, but he confirmed reports the project was doomed from the beginning. Speaking to Variety, Fincher said Alien 3 was a lesson he wouldn't forget. That film went off the rails under his watch, and he vowed not to make the same mistake again. "I look at it this way. On Alien 3, I stopped after that movie looking for permission and I would much rather ask for forgiveness," he said. "So that became my edict. And Se7en, on the page, could have gone a lot of different ways.

While promoting the IMAX restoration and 30th anniversary of his seminal hit film, Se7en, director David Fincher shares his thoughts on whether his popular Netflix shows will receive a physical release or not.
Fincher spoke with Collider as Se7en returns to theaters and IMAX close to 30 years later and ahead of a 4K Uhd release on January 7, 2025. In 1995, David Fincher pivoted from making a "Blade" movie and instead gave us one of the best neo-noir crime dramas of all time. "Se7en" follows Morgan Freeman as Somerset, a retiring police detective who takes on one final case with the new transfer David Mills (Brad Pitt), only to find himself investigating a string of increasingly gruesome murders perpetrated by an elaborate serial killer.
Decades after its original theatrical release, "Se7en" remains a masterpiece. It's a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with a cast at their peak of their acting powers, along with an eerie atmosphere that can best be described as Gotham City without Batman to protect it (which makes sense since "The Batman" owes so much to this movie). Even if you know what's coming, it's hard not to become so engrossed in the world and the story that you find yourself surprised by the film's shocking ending as if...

Celebrating its 30th anniversary next year, David Fincher’s newly-remastered Se7en is returning to theaters. Set open theatrically worldwide with exclusive IMAX engagements in the U.S. and Canada beginning on January 3, and international theatrical engagements on select dates, the theatrical run will be followed by a 4K Uhd and digital release on January 7, 2025.
The 4K restoration of Se7en was completed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Motion Picture Imaging (MPI) and was sourced from the original camera negative. The restoration was overseen by director David Fincher.
Scott Nye said at its TCM Classic Film Festival premiere earlier this year, “David Fincher’s 1995 triumph Se7en was restored in 8K for IMAX presentation and an eventual 4K disc release. Fincher appeared in person at the Tcl Chinese IMAX Theater to relay familiar anecdotes––the...

Well, now we know what’s in the box: It’s the 30th anniversary 4K release of David Fincher’s iconic thriller “Se7en.”
The 1995 Academy Award-nominated psychological thriller will usher in its pearl anniversary with a digital 4K Ultra HD and 4K Uhd Blu-ray disc release on January 7, 2025, plus an IMAX worldwide theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada beginning four days earlier on January 3. “Se7en” was never released in IMAX; ’95 was before IMAX began to dabble in Hollywood films, and “Se7en” was never re-released for the format.
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman play two cops who are tasked with tracking a brilliant and elusive killer who is orchestrating a string of horrific murders targeting a practitioner of each one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, John C. McGinley, and R. Lee Ermey also star. Fincher directs from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker. The film...

When David Fincher sat down to helm Seven, he was coming off the bruising experience of his directorial debut, Alien 3. Studio interference had left him frustrated, even disillusioned. “I thought I was done with movies,” Fincher confessed in a recent interview with Los Angeles Times. Yet, the gritty, rain-soaked thriller that became Seven offered him a rare opportunity: creative freedom. What followed was a gamble on casting, a battle for integrity, and the birth of a genre-defining masterpiece.
Casting Pitt and Freeman: A Perfect Pairing
At the heart of Seven is the compelling dynamic between detectives David Mills (Brad Pitt) and William Somerset (Morgan Freeman). For Fincher, getting the casting right was essential. He knew the film needed contrasting energies to balance its dark narrative. “Brad and Morgan were polar opposites, and that’s exactly what the story needed,” Fincher explained.

We’ve known for over a year that director David Fincher was working on a 4K (or 8K) restoration of his 1995 film Seven – or Se7en, if you prefer – and the 4K version of the movie was even screened at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival. Now, we know when fans are going to have the chance to own the 4K restoration of Seven on disc, as Blu-ray.com has revealed that it’s set to be released on January 7th.

They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife,...

In the early 2000s, there was an ambitious plan to bring Batman and Superman together on the big screen in a fresh way. Warner Bros. began developing a film titled Batman vs. Superman, which would have showcased the two superheroes clashing long before the 2016 release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
This project, often referred to as Asylum, generated significant excitement due to its darker and more intense storyline.
Warner Bros. aimed to create something innovative and thrilling, looking to pit two of their most iconic characters against each other.
This wasn’t just a fleeting idea; the project had substantial momentum. Andrew Kevin Walker, known for Se7en, penned the script, and Wolfgang Petersen was set to direct. There were even discussions about casting major stars for these legendary roles.

Back in the early 2000s, there was a plan to bring Batman and Superman together on the big screen in a way we hadn’t seen before. Warner Bros. had started working on a movie called Batman vs. Superman, which would’ve shown the two superheroes clashing long before the 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that we know today.
This project, often referred to as Asylum, generated a lot of excitement and buzz around its darker and more intense storyline.
At the time, Warner Bros. wanted to create something new and exciting. They were looking to take both Batman and Superman, two of their biggest comic book characters, and pit them against each other in a thrilling story.
It wasn’t just a random thought; this project had real momentum behind it. A script was written by Andrew Kevin Walker (famous for Se7en), and Wolfgang Petersen was set to direct.

Tim Burton has always been an outlier in Hollywood. He's a filmmaker with a distinct, peculiar aesthetic and set of interests, yet his movies have broad appeal and are remarkably consistent in the way they perform financially. Even Burton's weakest franchise films bear the sort of directorial hallmarks that are often missing from tentpoles in the 21st century. Indeed, say what you will against his "Dark Shadows," but only Burton could have enough pull to get a $150 million movie reboot of a cult '60s soap opera oddity green-lit in 2012 while also making it precisely the way he wanted. It's the same reason the critically-derided horror-comedy has found its share of defenders.

The popular 2005 police procedural series "Bones" is full of murder, gore, desiccated corpses, and ... bones. Most episodes begin with the two main characters, "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), coming across a corpse, often discovered in an unusual or disturbing death pose. The two agents, backed up by a team of passionate pathologists, will then reverse-engineer the circumstances of the corpse's death and determine the depth of foul play involved. There was typically a great deal of foul play involved.
Like other violent shows about death, murder, and corpses, "Bones" was ideal comfort viewing. Despite all the blood, violence, and misery, "Bones" often skewed tonally light, usually involving eccentric side characters and flippant gallows quips. Also, Bones and Brennan typically solved the mysteries of the rotten cadavers, displaying a police investigative system that worked as perfectly as it was designed to.

Early next year, Universal and Blumhouse will continue their reanimation of the Universal Monsters with the release of director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Whannell, who also directed Insidious 3 and Upgrade for Blumhouse, was the man responsible for bringing The Invisible Man back to life in 2020. He did so with a modern twist on the character that turned out to be more than just a moderate success. The Invisible Man raked in $144 million on a $7 million budget, receiving mostly positive reviews.
With horror doing better than ever at the box office and Whannell arguably without a miss on his directing resume, hopes are high for Wolf Man, howling into theaters on January 17, 2025.
But this isn’t the first time a modern Wolf Man project sounded good on paper…

Fight Club marked a turning point in the career of director David Fincher. Battered and bruised from the debacle of Alien 3, he had all but stepped away from Hollywood when he met with Fox executives Laura Ziskin and Bill Mechanic about the film. Chuck Palahniuk's novel was a reinvention of the serial killer subgenre, and the movie adaptation would revitalize Fincher's career. Fight Club would reveal David Fincher as a formidable filmmaker who had no intention of going quietly.
Equal parts gender identity debate and economic inequality fable, Fight Club attracted controversy. Edward Norton was fresh off American History X and Brad Pitt was forging his own path into Hollywood history when the two came together for the film. In the years since its lackluster cinema release in 1999, the movie has divided audiences and attained cult status through DVD and Blu-ray.

“What’s in the box?” The very fact that you just heard Brad Pitt‘s unique delivery in your head demonstrates how iconic that line has become. The question and reveal brought David Fincher‘s unrelentingly bleak crime thriller, Seven, to a head (sorry) and confirmed a hopelessly despairing worldview.
The box, of course, contained the severed head of Tracy (Gwyneth Paltrow), the sweet wife to Pitt’s detective David. The disembodying is the final move by the serial killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey), who based his crimes on Catholicism’s Seven Deadly Sins. Doe killed Tracy out of Envy, driving David to kill him out of anger. Together Wrath and Envy are punished.
Although that upsetting climax was indeed in the script by Andrew Kevin Walker, Pitt recently revealed that some at the studio New Line Cinema wanted something else entirely in that box.

Having been found not guilty after standing trial for sex offenses, actor Kevin Spacey is working on a comeback, signing on to star in multiple movies, doing convention appearances, and sitting down for interviews – including one for the Lex Fridman podcast. During his conversation with Fridman, Spacey was asked what it was like to work on director David Fincher’s 1995 film Seven – or Se7en, if you prefer – in which he played the serial killer known only as John Doe. Spacey’s answer gives an interesting look into the making of a film that many consider to be a classic.
Spacey confirmed to Fridman that he did not originally get the part of John Doe. Someone else was cast in the role… then, soon after filming began, Spacey got a call telling him that Fincher had fired the actor who had been cast and wanted Spacey to report to set. So he did.

Netflix’s new Hitchcockian thriller Windfallstars three actors you’ve definitely seen before — and perhaps even in the same movie together. But first, the scene: The film follows a series of (unfortunate) events that transpire when a robber is caught burgling a billionaire CEO’s idyllic vacation home. When the tech mogul and his wife show up unexpectedly for a weekend away, the robber’s plan goes awry. Windfallwas directed by Charlie McDowell and based on a story by McDowell and his leading actor, Jason Segel, and screenwriters Andrew Kevin Walker and Justin Lader.
Segel stars alongside The Power of the Dog’s Jesse Plemons in their second Charlie McDowell film — the two appear in his 2017 sci-fi thriller The Discovery — and Netflix leading lady Lily Collins, aka Emily in Paris herself. After more than two years in development, Charlie McDowell was nearly ready to direct his third feature. This one was going to be set all over New York, a step up in budget and in scope. But then came Covid, and the film, like everything else, was put on indefinite hold. “The question for myself and friends who are artists was, ‘How do we continue to make stuff?’ ” McDowell tells Tudum. The answer came a couple months into the pandemic. During a video chat with several friends and frequent collaborators — McDowell’s writing partner, Justin Lader; the actor Jason Segel; and the writer Andrew Kevin Walker (Se7en) — Segel suggested that the group write a film specifically set in a location where a small cast and crew could safely isolate.

12 years after her breakout role as Bella in The Twilight Saga came to an end, Kristen Stewart is returning to the vampire subgenre in her upcoming movie Flesh of the Gods. In Flesh of the Gods, Kristen Stewart will star alongside Oscar Isaac as a married vampire couple in L.A. in the '80s. Unlike The Twilight Saga, in which Bella only became a vampire at the very end of Breaking Dawn - Part 1, Flesh of the Gods will showcase Kristen Stewart as a powerful vampire from the beginning.
Kristen Stewart's upcoming movie Flesh of the Gods will be a callback of sorts to the actress' mega-franchise that came to an end more than a decade ago. With two of her films premiering back-to-back at the Sundance Film Festival in January, 2024 has already been a busy year for Kristen Stewart. She starred opposite Steven Yeun in Love Me before...

Kristen Stewart returns to the vampire genre with "Flesh of the Gods". "Flesh of the Gods" sets a new tone with seductive and intriguing vampires, contrasting the laughable Twilight vampires. The movie's release may benefit from comparisons to Twilight, offering Stewart a chance to shine in a new light.
Kristen Stewart is going back to the vampire genre with a new movie that sounds like the perfect anti-Twilight needed in 2024. Kristen Stewarts acting career began in the early 2000s, and the role that got her wide recognition was Sarah Altman in David Finchers Panic Room, alongside Jodie Foster. After appearing in movies like Zathura: A Space Adventure, The Messengers, Into the Wild, and Jumper, Stewart's big break arrived in 2008 when she was cast as Bella Swan in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyers debut novel Twilight.

It seems that the vampire genre is coming back in style! A once popular subgenre of horror and fantasy movies, the vampire genre became less popular after 2010 and not many filmmakers opted to make such movies anymore. But, it seems that we’re going to see a resurgence of vampire films in the near future. We have already reported on the upcoming vampire flick by Ryan Coogler, we’ve had several such movies recently, and there is another one coming up in 2025. Namely, Italian-Canadian filmmaker Panos Cosmatos is working on an original vampire thriller titled Flesh of the Gods, and it has been confirmed that the film will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac!
Panos Cosmatos is best known as the director of the action-horror Mandy (2018), which starred Elijah Wood. The filmmaker is now back after a 7-year break, as his Flesh of the Gods is scheduled to be released...
