Years after its original series finale, Criminal Minds remains at the forefront of the crime procedural genre. The show is arguably the most popular episodic police drama in modern history, with hordes of viewers constantly seeking new alternatives to Criminal Minds. Though Criminal Minds: Evolution is already on season 3, the original series lingers as the gold standard to compare it against. From the unforgettable cast to the unsettling cases, Criminal Minds captured something magical that can’t be easily replicated.
Over the 15 seasons of Criminal Minds, the most iconic, and perhaps infamous, part of the show was the “unsub” (or “Unknown Subject”). Rebecca De Mornay played the call girl Lana in Risky Business, where she meets the high school senior, played by Tom Cruise. The 1983 film is considered to be the breakout role of Cruise, and he shared some pretty steamy scenes with De Mornay. Interestingly, the two began an affair on set, despite De Mornay being in a relationship with actor Harry Dean Stanton at the time.

The affair didn’t last long even after De Mornay broke things off with Stanton. Soon after her Risky Business success, things started falling apart for the actress including her relationship with Cruise. She took the role in the romcom The Slugger’s Wife, which turned out to be a disaster.

Cult classics come in many forms, and many great movies of the 1980s went overlooked, only to be hailed as influential and important today. There are plenty of 1980s comedy movies that no one remembers, and the same can be said for most genres, no matter the decade. However, several films have gained cult status but have been reevaluated through a contemporary lens because of their dated elements. Most movies have problems, no matter when they were filmed, and this doesn't mean they're not worth watching, but context might change the meaning of some scenes.
Controversial and intense subjects have a place in cinema, but characterizing them well and not perpetuating stereotypes is an important aspect of filmmaking.

When people say, “Hollywood is a cult!”, it’s usually meant as hyperbole. But when Michelle Pfeiffer tried to make her name in Tinseltown, she found herself actually falling in with a cult, even if she didn’t realize it at the time.
Although Michelle Pfeiffer grew up in California, she knew to make it in movies she would have to move to Hollywood. Soon after she made her small screen debut on a 1978 episode of Fantasy Island, Pfeiffer landed the role of The Bombshell on Delta House, a terrible spin-off of Animal House. And it was that character name that Pfeiffer felt compelled to live up to, becoming close with a group that she thought was just trying to help her stay fit. “They worked with weights and put people on diets. Their thing was vegetarianism.” She added that this was far from being a standard weight loss group,...

Caddyshack is among the most beloved of comedies. It’s endlessly quoted, referenced and parodied, its array of colorful goofballs embedded in our collective consciousness. But who’s the film’s main character? It’s not Bill Murray’s Carl Spackler, Ted Knight’s Elihu Smails, Rodney Dangerfield’s Al Czervik or Chevy Chase’s Ty Webb. No, the man who drives the action is actually Danny.
You remember Danny Noonan, the young caddie trying to make some money and maybe get laid. Amidst Caddyshack’s crazy, vain or smug weirdos, Danny comes closest to resembling ordinary human behavior. He’s not trying to murder gophers. He’s not making inappropriate comments loudly in public. Danny is just a poor local kid navigating a comic minefield of rich idiots. The actor who played Danny did such a good job that you tend to forget him. But as the film celebrates its 44th anniversary,...

With Warner Media merging with Discovery back in 2022 and consolidation within the entertainment industry on the rise ever since, many fans of TCM — which is owned by Warner — fear their favorite home for cinema history might fall victim to these drastic cuts. Thankfully the channel continues to sparkle and shine like the Hollywood of old with filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson jumping on board to help curate and boost recognition of the channel. With their help, other directors have also come aboard — Guillermo del Toro, Wes Anderson, and Jason Reitman to name a few — offering their picks each month in the hopes of bringing in more viewers and keeping the love for classic cinema alive. This month’s curator is multi-hyphenate Viggo Mortensen, whose second directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” was released today.

Mickey Rourke was on the verge of two breakthrough performances when he nearly landed the straight-man lead in one of the most influential comedies of the 1980s.
It would've been another curveball in a life filled with them. The Schenectady-born Rourke grew up in Miami, where the athletic young man discovered an affinity for the Sweet Science. He showed promise as a boxer throughout his youth, but his career was derailed by two concussions. Rourke picked himself up off the canvas, hung up his gloves, and moved to New York City, where he gained acceptance to the prestigious Actors Studio with his first audition.
The talent was there, and so, god help us, were the looks. Rourke wasn't handsome. He was hot. He had the hunky bearing of Marlon Brando and the piercing eyes of Paul Newman. He was primed to be the biggest star of the next decade and beyond,...

"Caddyshack" started out as a straightforward coming-of-age comedy about a young guy working as a caddie on the links of a posh golf club; by the time it reached the screen, it had become a summit meeting between three comic heavyweights of the time. There was Chevy Chase, the former star of "Saturday Night Live;" Bill Murray, the then-current star of the show; and Rodney Dangerfield, the stand-up legend whose club in New York helped launch the career of many comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Carrey. There was also a gopher that looked remarkably like a hand puppet, but the coming-of-age stuff was largely relegated to filler by the antics of its three stars.
After the huge success of "National Lampoon's Animal House," Harold Ramis and Douglas Kennedy decided to take the riotous underdog formula to the links. They'd both had experience at golf clubs as teenagers and, together...

Ruby Baker’s carefree days of staying out past curfew, carousing with her besties, and simply being a teenager are all over. The nightmare of The Glass House begins with the protagonist (Leelee Sobieski) learning her parents, David and Grace, have both died in a car accident. Ruby and her younger brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are then quickly taken in by family friends and former neighbors Terry and Erin Glass, whose home is located in Malibu. Obviously a big life adjustment like this requires some time, but Ruby’s grief turns into suspicion. There’s something not right about her new guardians.
In this 2001 thriller, those first couple of scenes with the whole Baker clan are wholesome and inviting; David and Grace’s last moments with their children are warmly colored and glowing. But once they’re gone and the Baker children move into their foster home, the movie gradually becomes cold and severe.

This article contains spoilers for Episode 1 of “Winning Time.”
“Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” is an epic retelling of the Lakers’ Showtime Era, a decade that was defined by a string of NBA championship wins, fast-break offense and Hollywood flair. Things kicked off in 1979, when business mogul Jerry Buss (John C. Reilly) bought the team and the Lakers selected Earvin “Magic” Johnson as the first overall pick of the NBA draft.
Those two events dominate the pilot episode of “Winning Time,” which premiered Sunday, March 6 on HBO (and is streaming on HBO Max). Much like the Showtime Era itself, it’s a fun and flashy display that remains mostly faithful to the facts contained in Jeff Pearlman’s book “Showtime,” while taking a fair amount of creative license.

Military ensemble pictures work well when the excitement is all about the job and working under pressure: Charlton Heston, Stacy Keach, Ned Beatty and even David Carradine are excellent in this credible story about a near-impossible rescue of submariners trapped 1400 feet below. It’s a solid Navy disaster scenario, unusually authentic and realistic — until the dramatists require actor Ronny Cox to act like an emotional idiot. Those U.K. disc producers do it justice with some excellent extras, including a piece with a Navy specialist who worked with the rescue craft seen in the movie… and who later became a well-known film historian, author and film series organizer.

With Spring in full bloom through most of the country, many cooped-up urbanites are longing for a sweet getaway, perhaps at a quaint old cottage. Even a century-old farmhouse would do for a nice rest. Ah, but what if someone was already there and refusing to rest. Or stay in the “underworld”? Oh yes, it’s haunted house time at the movies (or at least the number one movie streaming service). No, it’s not another mission for those 1970s paranormal “PIs”, the Warrens, though they’ll be back soon in another entry in the ever-expanding Conjuring series. No, this time it’s pure fiction, and it springs ahead into the start of the next decade. Otherwise, it’s a new take on yet another attractive young family as they begin to unravel due to those unexplained, late at night (usually) Things Heard & Seen.
And those “things” are in full...

It is truly incredible how durable the “haunted house” structure has revealed itself to be over time. Case in point: Things Heard & Seen, written and directed by Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman. Based on the Elizabeth Brundage novel All Things Cease To Appear and starring recent Academy Award-nominee Amanda Seyfried, this thriller emerges as an above-average genre programmer. Traditional beats are explored from a different angle, resulting in something quite memorable.
Seyfried plays Catherine Claire, a stressed wife and mother whose reluctantly chosen to leave New York City for the rural Hudson Valley for the good of her husband George’s (James Norton) teaching career. From the jump, their marriage appears fractured. Once George thrusts a big, eerie pick-me-up of a house on them, it all gets worse. At first, their young daughter (Ana Sophia Heger) starts seeing things. Soon enough, they all are.

Netflix has unveiled a new trailer for Things Heard & Seen. The thriller, set to arrive later this month, stars Oscar-nominee Amanda Seyfried. The movie takes us back to the 80s and focuses on a Manhattan couple moving into a historic home, only to discover that their marriage has a sinister darkness. As we can see from the trailer, there is all manner of mystery and evil lurking in this adaptation of Elizabeth Brundage's 2016 novel.
The trailer opens with the couple at the center of our tale getting ready to leave life in New York City for a rural existence. Amanda Seyfried's Catherine is reluctant, but goes along with it to support her husband. They are happy enough at first in their new farm home, which is in need of some renovation. But Catherine discovers a book that takes her down a dark path. As it turns out, there...

"Everything in the natural world, has a counterpart in the spiritual realm." Netlfix has revealed an official trailer for a mysterious thriller titled Things Heard & Seen, from filmmakers Shari Springer Berman & Robert Pulcini. A Manhattan couple moves to a historic hamlet up in the Hudson Valley and come to discover that their marriage has a sinister darkness, one that rivals their new home's history. Oooh. Based on the acclaimed novel by Elizabeth Brundage. Amanda Seyfried and James Norton co-star, with Natalia Dyer, Alex Neustaedter, Rhea Seehorn, Michael O'Keefe, Karen Allen, Jack Gore, with F. Murray Abraham, James Urbaniak, and Ana Sophia Heger. At first glance, this looks like an American remake of Rebecca, about digging up skeletons in the closet once you marry and move. The pandemic has had a huge impact on the entertainment industry, including the rescheduling of the 2021 Academy Awards ceremony from February 28 to April 25 — but this isn’t the first time an historic event has caused a change of date for the annual event. Fortunately, by the next day, the president was on his way to recovery, and the show was able to proceed.

Here is a wrap up of all the news you need to know from Thursday, January 28.
ABC's Big Sky is expanding its cast.
Deadline is reporting that the freshman hit is adding a powerful new family as Big Sky Season 1 progresses.
Michelle Forbes, Britt Robertson, Michael Raymond-James, Ryan Dorsey, and Omar Metwally have all been added in recurring guest roles.
The outlet states that Forbes, Robertson, Raymond James, and Dorsey will all be playing family members, while Metwally is on board as a U.S. Marshall.
Since its debut in November, the series has been a decent performer for ABC and recently snagged a six-episode backorder.
The ratings have been solid, and it was steady after a six-week hiatus, which does bode well for its future.
Now that the initial mystery is wrapping up, all eyes will be on the next storyline to see whether it can keep up the pace.

Ed Murray, Bill Murray's older brother and the inspiration behind the classic comedy Caddyshack, has passed away. Though not an actor himself, Ed had worked as a caddy as a teenager alongside brothers Bill and Brian Doyle-Murray at the Indian Hill Golf Club in Winnetka, Illinois. The experiences they had at the time heavily inspired the Caddyshack screenplay, which would later be co-written by Brian and Harold Ramis. Caddyshack star Michael O'Keefe has offered up his caddying services to the U.S. Open. The 65-year old actor has a lot of experience in the world of golf, which extends (sort of) well past the 1980 comedy.
