Fans were first introduced to the Ghostbusters when the first movie hit theaters in 1984. The franchise experienced a resurgence decades later with the release of legacy sequels, Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, in 2021 and 2024 respectively.
Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in all four sequels, recently reflected on the legacy of Harold Ramis, who starred in and co-wrote the first two movies with Dan Aykroyd. "Harold, for me, was always the glue that sort of held things together, because when you're working on a show with such dynamic personalities that don't always come together," the actor told The Direct. "But Harold was a guy that everyone respected enough to put aside their own stuff and get the job done. So, he was always a go-to guywhen things were a little nuts."

Since 1975 nearly a thousand hosts have graced the stage at Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center for “Saturday Night Live.”
Actors, comedians, musicians and even politicians have taken the stage to make America laugh on Saturday night for 50 seasons. Twenty five of these hosts have been inducted into the “Five Timers Club.” The club was first introduced during Tom Hanks’ 1990 monologue, featuring Steve Martin, Elliott Gould and Paul Simon.

There's been talk of a potential Spaceballs sequel for many years, and we recently got confirmation that a follow-up to Mel Brooks' '80s Star Wars spoof is officially in the works.
The movie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, with Josh Gad set to star and produce alongside Brooks. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film from a screenplay by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad.
Gad aside, no cast members have been announced, but we're now hearing that the studio has reached out to a major up-and-coming star for an undisclosed role in the movie.
In THR's profile of Wicked star Ariana Grande, the trade mentions that the recent Academy Award-nominee has been offered a number of roles which she has yet to commit to, including a part in Spaceballs 2.
"A disaster wedding comedy, a female detective romp set in a Housewives-style reality show, and a Spaceballs sequel.

After decades of speculation, Mel Brooks is returning to make Spaceballs 2, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the long-awaited comedy sequel. The original Spaceballs is writer/director Mel Brooks' parody of Star Wars and features Bill Pullman as the Han Solo-esque Lone Starr, John Candy as his sidekick Barf, and Rick Moranis as the villainous Dark Helmet. While the film was only a moderate success upon release, it soon became a cult hit thanks to its pitch-perfect sendup of the original Star Wars trilogy, picking apart its commercialism and silly sci-fi tropes.
Spaceballs itself teases a sequel dubbed Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money, but while fans hoped for a follow-up for over 3 decades, little news ever materialized. Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned.
In 1987, MGM and Brooksfilms released a feature-length parody of the Star Wars movie trilogy that would become almost as enduring as its target with Spaceballs, a Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis and John Candy-starring send-up of science-fiction’s three biggest films. Since then, George Lucas revived the Star Wars franchise with a second trilogy, spun off the series with countless novels, comic books, TV shows and video games, sold Star Wars to Disney for a bajillion Space Bucks and watched as the franchise bloated into a behemoth of cash-in content and merchandising that would make Yogurt proud.
However, in the nearly 40 years since Mel Brooks produced, wrote, directed and starred in Spaceballs, the comedy icon has taken a break from following every branching path that the vast, multimedia Star Wars franchise has gone down. When Mel Brooks made Spaceballs, he didn’t need a Star Wars refresher course; it had only been a few years between Brooks' 1987 film and the end of the original Star Wars trilogy in 1983. However, when Josh Gad recently pitched a sequel to the comedy classic, nearly 40 years had passed along with countless films, shows, games, and books in the Star Wars franchise. Brooks was the first to admit that he hadn't exactly kept up with the galaxy far, far away. So when Gad pitched Spaceballs 2, he had to do so while also bringing the famed filmmaker and comedian up to speed, which seems like a Herculean task.
Gad revealed on the Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast that getting Brooks' approval for the project (and having him sign on as a producer) required the Frozen star to engage in a frenetic, one-man, 40-minute pitch. Gad elaborated to host...

When it comes to Christmas movies, Home Alone reigns supreme. Though Kevin McCallister reigned the movie, let’s talk about the real Mvp of slapstick disasters, Marv, played by Daniel Stern. Well, we all know, this guy wasn’t just a burglar, he was a walking, talking calamity with zero self-preservation skills. Paired with the classic Pesci’s short-fused Harry, Marv is the tall, clueless half of the “Wet Bandits,” who thinks leaving flooded houses is a genius criminal signature. Turns out, it’s not.

The original 1984 Ghostbusters was almost very, very different thanks to a few almost-castings that didn't happen. The beloved film continues to be iconic for its humorous look at the supernatural, and unique tonal storytelling within that genre. Ghostbusters starred Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts, William Atherton, Ernie Hudson, and more. However, a number of the roles in the beloved cult classic film were almost played by other acclaimed actors.
The 1980s saw a boom in franchise films, including Ghostbusters. Many of these franchises started the careers of some of Hollywood's most beloved stars. Several actors who turned down Ghostbusters went on to star in their own massively successful franchises, most notably Jurassic Park, Beetlejuice, and several others. Without its iconic cast, Ghostbusters would not have become the cult classic it is today.

The world of Ghostbusters continues to expand, but now with an animated movie, and this new project can be the spiritual successor to one of the best animated shows of the 1980s. Back in 1984, the world met a group of parapsychologists investigating and eliminating ghosts in New York City in the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters. Directed by Ivan Reitman and created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters followed the title team, formed by Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Aykroyd), Spengler (Ramis), and Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), on their ghost-hunting adventures.
The huge success of Ghostbusters made way for a franchise with a direct sequel, a failed reboot in 2016, and a second reboot with two movies, along with two animated TV shows, video games, and lots of merch. While a third movie in the current reboot timeline is in development, the Ghostbusters franchise is now also preparing another movie, but this one will be animated.

There's nothing a horror movie does better than a featured cameo, and there are many actors who give their all to a single scene of a scary movie and are remembered for it forever. Within the horror genre, most characters are expendable. When actors only have one moment to sell their performances, it's because they're an early victim who demonstrates how the monster or magic works. However, these films sometimes flip the script and have the long-awaited villain only appear in the final moments of the story to increase the impact of their arrival.

Alan Menken is a true romantic. Just ask him how he met his wife of 52 years, Janis.
“This dancer walks into the room, and I knew immediately who she was, because I dreamt her,” he says, beaming from across the breakfast table on a Beverly Hills rooftop.
It’s no surprise that the man behind lionized love songs like “A Whole New World” and “I See the Light” has a tender, gentle nature. In fact, it’s that undeniable sentimentality that has elevated Menken to legend status (and Egot status) over the course of his career spanning five decades. The composer has earned eight Oscars (the most of any person alive today), all of which came from his work on films of the so-called “Disney Renaissance,” the period between 1989 and 1999 when the Mouse House produced some of its most beloved animated films. And he remains one of the industry’s...

From time to time, "The Big Bang Theory" would bring on some pretty big names to play the family members of its main characters. Just to name a few, Christine Baranski plays Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, mother to Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki), Laurie Metcalf plays Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) mom Mary Cooper, and Kathy Bates shows up as Mrs. Fowler, the mom of Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik). Dads get some play too; memorably, Penny's (Kaley Cuoco) dad Wyatt is played by "Revenge of the Nerds" star Keith Carradine. But what about Howard Wolowitz, played by Simon Helberg? We hear but never see his mother, voiced by character actor Carol Ann Susi, but we never meet his dad. Apparently, though, Helberg and some of the show's producers really, really wanted "Ghostbusters," "Little Shop of Horrors," and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" star Rick Moranis to play Mr. Wolowitz.

When Celebrities Take a Break: Why Stars Step Back from Fame - Main Image
Some of the celebrities that we know and love from the past have taken a break from the spotlight and stepped back despite their fame.
There are various reasons why such stars would do that kind of career move whether it's personal life and struggles or simply not wanting to pursue stardom anymore. Let's explore it all below.
Celebrities Who Took Acting Hiatus for Personal Reasons
Some celebrities decided to step back from fame due to personal reasons whether it's to focus on motherhood or having a simple family life without the distraction of stardom.
The most recent example is Cameron Diaz, who decided to take a hiatus from acting after starring in the 2014 remake of Annie to focus on having her own family. She still occasionally made public appearances at events and talk shows from time to time.

The Flintstones movie wasn’t well-received by critics when it hit theaters in 1994, but 30 years later, it looks surprisingly great compared to today’s soulless live-action remakes of classic animation. Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, The Flintstones adapts the iconic Hanna-Barbera cartoon about suburban cavemen into live-action. John Goodman stars as Fred Flintstone alongside Rick Moranis as his best friend Barney Rubble and Elizabeth Perkins as his wife Wilma. Although it was a huge box office success, The Flintstones was met with mostly negative reviews from critics.
It has a dismal “rotten” score of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, and publications like The Washington Post, The New York Times, and Rolling Stone named it as one of the worst movies of 1994. At the time, The Flintstones was considered a cinematic embarrassment. Goodman begged Spielberg not to make a Flintstones sequel, despite the first film’s blockbuster success at the box office, so he...

There’s something about the Ghostbusters franchise that makes everyone feel good. Whether it’s the original film from 1984, or Ghostbusters: Afterlife, one of the recent entries, the Ghostbusters films are designed for sheer entertainment with the perfect blend of horror and comedy. And while the reception has varied throughout the years, it is one of those funny franchises that will always make you smile, regardless of generational gaps.
1989’s Ghostbusters II is a great example of a good sequel that was always overshadowed by the quality of the first movie. Decades after its release, its meta approach, its right dose of horror, and its inherent holiday spirit make it a rewatchable second part that manages to equal its predecessor in many ways.

There are actors who define a period of time in the eyes of audiences, who star in groundbreaking, hugely influential projects that are beloved years after they are released, and whose screen presence makes them unforgettable.
One of those actors is Rick Moranis. For many '80s and '90s kids, Moranis was a face greatly familiar to them, a source of comfort in family friendly movies like "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" or their guide into the world of more risqué movies with adult themes and humor like "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Spaceballs." It didn't matter the tone or the genre, Moranis was consistently funny, endearing, and charming -- whether as an innocent floral shop worker who discovers a talking, singing carnivorous plant, or a Darth Vader spoof with plans for world domination (and a penchant for silly ties).

The recent batch of Ghostbusters movies — not including the 2016 reboot that Sony has decided doesn’t exist, it seems — introduced the world to a new group of ethically-questionable paranormal cops, played by Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard. But it also incorporated the surviving members of the original Ghostbusters team (minus Rick Moranis who had better things to do).
The most recent entry in the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, was a modest box office hit earlier this year, making just over $200 million on a budget of $100 million. While it remains to be seen if the franchise will continue (Coon recently revealed that she’s yet to see a script for a follow-up), if we do get another Ghostbusters movie, it will probably be without the original cast.

Maybe don’t call Dan Aykroyd?
The writer-star of the 1984 Ghostbusters said it was unlikely he and Bill Murray would return to their iconic roles in the sci-fi comedy franchise.
“I don’t see that coming,” Aykroyd told the New York Post while promoting his History Channel series The UnBelievable With Dan Aykroyd.
The Og Saturday Night Live cast member and Oscar nominee continued, “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas.”
Aykroyd, Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis starred as Manhattan-based paranormal investigators in the 1984 lighthearted action-horror movie, from a script by Aykroyd and Ramis, with Ivan Reitman directing. Also starring Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis, the pic became a critical and commercial success, spawning several sequels and reboots, as well as merchandise and a coveted spot in the cultural zeitgeist.

When Matt LeBlanc showed up to the premiere of a Brad Pitt flick that tanked to the tune of $500K, his reason was hilariously, well, Joey-like. When asked why he was there, LeBlanc shrugged and delivered an answer that could’ve come straight from his Friends alter ego: “Free food, man!”

Spaceballs 2, the sequel to Mel Brooks' 1987 satirical space opera, was announced earlier this year and, from the sounds of it, things are getting closer and closer to the starting point thanks to writer Josh Gad, who recently provided fans with one heck of a galaxy-sized update. Gad famous for voicing the character of Olaf in Disneys Frozen franchise is penning the script along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu), and will also star in and produce the long-awaited follow-up, which also has Brooks on board as a producer, and Josh Greenbaum (Strays) sitting in the director's chair.

A Spaceballs sequel is currently in the works with Josh Gad on board to star, produce, and co-write the script. While not many details are yet known about the new film, it's sounding like some new information is soon to be announced.
In a new interview with Forbes to promote his Dark Horse comic, The Writer, Gad shared a big update on the project. He confirmed that there's a finished draft of the screenplay for Spaceballs 2 that's left everyone who's seen it so far feeling "blown away." Stressing that he's spending "every hour of every day" working on the sequel, Gad hinted that the film will soon be ready to start with production.

Great news, Mel Brooks fans! There’s a Spaceballs sequel coming down the pike, and the script is supposed to be amazing!
How do we know? Screenwriter and potential star Josh Gad tells us so. He just finished his first draft, and “everybody who’s read it has been blown away,” says the guy who just finished the first draft. “The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.”
Gad then proceeded to tell Forbes everything about the new script without actually saying anything at all. “It was sort of a fever dream that this all happened,” he explained. “Mel has been so unbelievably supportive, involved and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away. It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen.

In 1987, comedy legend Mel Brooks released Spaceballs, a parody of Star Wars that pit space rogue Lone Star (Bill Pullman) and his furry companion Barf (John Candy) against the vile Darth Helmet (Rick Moranis). Star Wars mania had by no means abated by that point — Return of the Jedi had come out four years before — but Spaceballs didn't get its own cult of fans until it came out on home video, which is how watched it when I was a tiny baby in the 1990s. I actually think I watched Spaceballs before I watched Star Wars, and it's still probably first in my heart.
Brooks made a couple of attempts over the years to get a sequel to Spaceballs made, but nothing took; according to Forbes, Moranis once pitched him on a movie called Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II, but it never came together. And so a couple...

Jonathan Haze, who starred for Roger Corman as the flower shop assistant Seymour Krelborn in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, just one of two dozen films he made with the B-movie legend, has died. He was 95.
Haze died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles, his daughter, Rebecca Haze, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A cousin of drummer Buddy Rich, Haze was a valuable and versatile member of Corman’s repertory company from 1954 — when he acted in The Fast and the Furious and Monster From the Ocean Floor — until 1967, when he appeared in The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre and served as an assistant director on The Born Losers.
In one of his more noteworthy turns, Haze portrayed one of the three teenagers who stumble upon $250,000 worth of heroin and become dealers in Warner Bros. drama Stakeout on Dope Street (1958), the first feature directed by Irvin Kershner.

My Husband Won’t Stop Pranking Me — Help!
Dear Remy,
I am this close to moving into a tent in the backyard. My husband, once a dashing soap star on a Canadian show (filmed in Vancouver, so he was away for months at a time), has taken an alarming turn since his career hit a post-covid slump. With no auditions sticking, he’s decided his true calling is as a YouTube prankster. And guess who’s his unwilling co-star? Me.
In the past two weeks, I’ve been drenched by a water balloon while stepping out of the shower, found fake spiders in my coffee cup and opened our front door to discover what appeared to be a life-size effigy of the two little girls from The Shining staring at me. The neighbors don’t stop by anymore — not since my husband rigged our garage to look like a sinkhole...

Rick Moranis, now mostly retired, was one of the most beloved comedic actors of the 1980s and early '90s, known for his quirky characters and deadpan humor. Whether playing an eccentric inventor, a nebbish accountant, or a bumbling villain, Moranis brought an endearing quality to each of his roles. His unique ability to blend understated wit with larger-than-life characters won him a ton of fans.

I remember the day -- March 4, 1994 -- when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. When "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" arrived in 2021, soaked in nostalgia, it gave Hasbro an excuse to dig back into the legacy of "Ghostbusters" and deliver new action figures of the original team of paranormal exterminators. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson all got new action figures from the original "Ghostbusters" in Hasbro's six-inch line of Plasma Series collectibles, as well as new figures inspired by their aged appearances (or ghostly in the case of the late Ramis) in "Afterlife." However, there was one signature element of "Ghostbusters" missing from this toy line, and Hasbro's crowdfunding collectible arm HasLab is rectifying that soon.
Today, Hasbro announced that the latest HasLab crowdfunded collectible release is an Ecto-1 vehicle scaled to the six-inch Plasma Series figures. The collectible vehicle will come with a bunch of exclusive accessories, especially if you buy the deluxe version inspired by "Ghostbusters II," and there's one particularly...

Dan Aykroyd praised Jason Reitman’s film about the launch of “Saturday Night Live,” calling it “pretty accurate” and a “surefire candidate for Best Picture.”
The comedian was one of the original cast members of the NBC sketch show and he’s played by Dylan O’Brien in “Saturday Night.”
“Cracking a head to applaud Jason Reitman’s triumphant ‘SNL’ film. Wow! What a propulsive, engaging, funny, beautifully cast and acted, suspenseful, adventurous, music-filled ride,” Aykroyd tweeted on Friday.
He gushed that the film, which unfolds as the “SNL” cast prepared to go live for the first time in 1975, is a “perfect window into the creative process at its highest level.”

While it is common to witness actors' careers gradually slip away, theres something admirable about the performers who make the conscious choice to take a step back from Hollywood at the height of their popularity. This choice shows real integrity, as the actors know in their hearts that they are ready to call it quits despite viewers' desire for more. This can be down to a child star wishing to experience a new life, longtime acting legends having nothing else to give, or performers taking a planned hiatus they enjoyed so much that it turned into a retirement.
Some of the greatest actors of all time have willingly cut their careers short and said goodbye when their popularity was at an all-time high. These decisions are nothing new in Hollywood, as everyone from icons of the silent era to 1990s child stars have felt the urge to explore life away...

Bubble, boil, steam, and burn, it’s time to watch those film reels turn. That’s right, it’s October, which means it’s almost Halloween, but the minute the clock struck midnight on the 1st, we here at IndieWire were already decked in black and frightening our office mates at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. While carving pumpkins, eating candy, and donning elaborate costumes may be how most ring in this special time of year, we believe there’s no better celebration of spooky season than entering a dark theater and sharing a few collective screams with strangers.
This month, repertory theaters in New York and Los Angeles have plenty of offerings to get those lungs expanding and heart beating. From black-and-white classics like Don Siegel’s “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) to modern monster favorites such as “The Mummy” (1999) starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, don’t miss...

Yes, a Spaceballs sequel is now in the works, with director Josh Greenbaum now offering some insight into what audiences can expect from this long-awaited (but perhaps unnecessary?) follow-up to the Mel Brooks comedy classic. In a new interview with Esquire, Greenbaum confirmed that spaceballs 2 will be a true sequel, and will poke fun at more modern science fiction. Particularly the Star Wars franchise.
Theres been a ton of Star Wars content. Its just exploded beyond the fact that there have been not three but six Star Wars films madeand thats just in the Star Wars universe. So theres a lot of new [material to satirize], but we also certainly focus on continuing the old, so it is a true sequel.
There has, of course, been a whole lot more Star Wars stuff since the before times of 1987, with Disney now in charge of new movies and shows. The House of Mouse...

Although it can be fun to experience new worlds, sometimes returning to familiar characters and settings can be equally exciting. There have been many great movie sequels, which allow audiences the chance to witness the events that transpired following the previous movie's conclusion. With the rise in popularity of legacy sequels, further installments in pre-existing stories have become more common than ever before. Still, sometimes these follow-ups are not as incredible as they first seem.
Although the sequels may seem amazing on first watch, they prove to be significantly worse on subsequent viewings. Nostalgia can cloud many of the flaws that are present in their screenplays, causing audiences to forget about their weak characterization and poor storytelling. Sometimes, the memory can cheat, leading to immense disappointment upon viewing these seemingly thrilling sequels years after their release.
