This post contains spoilers for "The White Lotus" season 3.
Can somebody please give Walton Goggin an award for acting almost entirely with his eyes? He did it on last week's episode of "The White Lotus," when his depressed maybe-hitman Rick sat through a stunningly unexpected monologue from an old buddy played by Sam Rockwell. This week, he's back at it again as the season enters its endgame -- which no doubt will have something to do with the man known as Jim Hollinger. Hollinger makes his entrance in an out-of-focus shot at the end of episode 5, and the hour ends with Goggins' almost imperceptibly shaken look.
The big twist here can be readily inferred, though we'll have to wait until next week for the show to confirm or deny it. Rick previously said that he knew hotel owner Sritala's (Patravadi Mejudhon) husband killed his dad when he was on what...

Top TV director-producer and President of the Directors Guild of America Lesli Linka Glatter was one one many prominent Hollywood figures who lost their homes in the Palisades fire.
The eight-time Emmy nominee, who has worked on such series as Homeland, Pretty Little Liars, Mad Men, The Morning Show and the upcoming Zero Hour, posted a note on Instagram thanking those who had reached out to her in the aftermath of the disaster.
“I am safe, at my son’s house in the valley,” she wrote. “Sadly my house is gone, as is so much of the Palisades… this is heartbreaking for many. My heart goes out to all those who have lost so much and to those in danger.”
Also on Friday, Glatter sent a letter to DGA members about the fires, in which she shared her own experience.
“I have been so fortunate to call Pacific Palisades home.

As the new year began, everyone geared up to embrace resolutions and changes. The Emmy Awards team is no exception. They’ve introduced some major rule changes to their award categories, stirring debates about whether these updates are truly fair to artists or not.

Announced on January 8, 2025, by the Television Academy, these changes impact directing, guest acting, casting, and theme music. While the first two will take effect for the 2025 Emmys, the latter will apply in 2026. But the big question is, are these new rules fair to the artists?
Directors will get to showcase multiple works

The Morning Show Season 4 arrives this year after close to two years between seasons, and according to series star Jennifer Aniston, "It's jam-packed, that’s for sure." The actress spoke to People about the season, which wrapped filming last month, citing how challenging it was. "Oh my gosh, it was hard. It was so hard," Aniston said. "But it's a great season," she added. The Morning Show Season 4 tackles some of the biggest issues of our time, with showrunner Charlotte Stoudt and EP Mimi Leder teasing two major arcs.

In many ways, an ending can make or break a movie. Think about a film like 2000’s “Pay it Forward,” a schmaltzy, sentimental drama about a child who inspires others to put good deeds out into the world with no expectation of anything coming back their way. In the hands of director Mimi Leder and led by strong performances from Haley Joel Osmont and Helen Hunt, the film manages to serve its purpose and tell a compelling story about being of service to others, all of which is undercut in its conclusion when Osmont’s 12 year-old character is stabbed to death at school. It’s a horrible, traumatic wrap-up for a film that otherwise preaches goodness, like having George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” fall into a manhole as he was running through Bedford Falls to reunite with his family.

When it comes to asteroid disaster movies, Armageddon might be what you immediately go to, with Bruce Willis playing golf off an oil rig, Aerosmith screaming into their microphones, and teaching oil workers how to be astronauts in a week. But if you want a more grounded and naturalistic take on the end of the world, look no further than Deep Impact, directed by Mimi Leder and now streaming for free on Vizio's WatchFree+. Unlike Armageddon, Deep Impact uses multiple intertwined storylines to explore how different people cope with an impending global catastrophe.

The Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon came out in 2019, and the show didn’t gain too much attention before its release especially since people believed it would shy away from addressing controversial topics. These days, Hollywood tries to incorporate themes from the real world possibly to help educate the masses regarding certain touchy subjects.

However, the assumptions about The Morning Show were laid to rest when the cast and crew addressed what the series would be based on during a press conference. It turns out, that the series wasn’t necessarily supposed to portray the storyline that we all know of, but real-world issues ended up redirecting the story’s entire trajectory.

Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

Weichman was particularly impressed by the VFX in Deep Impact, noting that despite the film being made in the early days of water simulations, they achieved remarkable results using geometry animation and particle effects.

The 2024 Emmys lineup for Best Drama Directing was a free-for-all, resulting in one of the most diverse group of shows and nominees in recent memory. The lineup includes two premieres (“Slow Horses” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), two finales (“The Crown” and “The Morning Show”), and two penultimate showcases (“Shōgun” and “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”). With none of the shows nominated last year (or their last eligibility), anything is possible, but there looks to be a clear frontrunner in this category based on the quality of the episodes and the popularity of the series.
Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Drama Directing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:

Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Consider it a perfect storm of sorts: With the ending of HBO’s Succession (which took the top prize for three of its four seasons) and AMC’s Better Call Saul (which garnered a staggering 53 nominations across its six seasons without a single win) — plus the fact that last year’s strikes forced shows like last year’s drama nominees The Last of Us, Stranger Things, The White Lotus and Yellowjackets to delay production — this year’s contenders for best drama series include only one previous nominee in The Crown, which won the prize in 2021.

Julianna Margulies will not be returning to Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” for Season 4.
Sources tell Variety that the decision was made before the controversy stirred by a podcast that featured Margulies last year, and that she was offered a one-episode appearance in Season 4 that she turned down. The sources also say she has been asked about her interest in returning for a potential fifth season.

It's practically impossible to talk about Mimi Leder's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Deep Impact" without also cursorily mentioning Michael Bay's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Armageddon." Leder's film was released on May 8, and was presented as a stern and realistic view of what might happen to the Earth if a massive, Mount Everest-sized comet struck. Bay's film was released on July 1, and presented a much more cartoony, ultra-macho version of the same story, this time with a comet the size of Texas. The former was about somber politicians planning for the worst, the latter was about muscular, blue-collar miners flying into space. Curiously, both films were hits; "Deep Impact" made $350 million on a budget of $80 million, and "Armageddon" made over $550 million on a budget of $140 million.
Of the two, "Deep Impact" is the "classy" choice, featuring a wide ensemble of recognizable actors, each doing their best to prepare for -- and...

Netflix shines light on Felicity Jones' star power with the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic On the Basis of Sex. Felicity Jones excels in the role as Ginsberg, reminding viewers of her impressive talent. If not in On the Basis of Sex, Jones' role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story should have made her a bigger star.
Netflix will remind streamers why one actress deserves to be a bigger star now that it has included the well-received biographical drama On the Basis of Sex in its catalog. The 2018 biopic documents the revolutionary life of lawyer and later associate justice of the US Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. On the Basis of Sex may be nowhere near as trailblazing as the historical icon herself but is considered an appreciable and crowd-pleasing flick by the likes of Rotten Tomatoes, on which the movie earned an approval rating of 72%, and other review aggregators that reveal the same sentiment.

Twin movies. Doppelgängers. Rapid fire remakes. Whatever you want to call them, Hollywood studios have a long and painful history of rushing concepts that run the gamut from similar to identical into theaters at virtually the same moment. Oftentimes the belief is if you get before the cameras first, the competitor(s) will throw in the towel and cancel production. Yet once in a while what seems like a turf war played out in industry trade papers, where the disputed territories are overlapping ideas or historical personages, spills out into the multiplex as “the same movie” comes to cinemas weeks or months apart.
This phenomenon is more than a hundred years old, with the first such instance believed to be two silent adaptations of Ivanhoe being produced on different continents in 1913, although a clearer kickoff might be when Paramount and MGM competed to get the first American Mata Hari movie...

If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah. There’s only one acceptable answer: 2004’s criminally overlooked nocturnal neo-noir Collateral. Featuring a rare villainous turn by Tom Cruise and a restrained Oscar-nominated performance by Jamie Foxx, the L.A. crime story was the first film in history to utilize the Viper FilmStream High Definition Camera. The digital format that David Fincher would later adopt for use on Zodiac and Benjamin Button. Beyond the cutting-edge technology, the remote locations Mann and his production team gave viewers a much different glimpse of Los Angeles away from the glamor of Hollywood and into the seedy, sinister parts of town rarely seen on the big screen.
