Linda Lavin’s final role on television will be in “Mid-Century Modern” this Friday, so her co-stars and the sitcom creators made sure to honor the late star at their Hulu premiere on Tuesday.
“Linda Lavin was the most joyous, gracious, amazing person that you’d ever want to meet. She worked from the age of 5 to 87 and went out blazing like the star she was,” Nathan Lee Graham told TheWrap. “She truly was a pro at everything. This woman did everything: she could play the piano; she could sing; she could act, comedy, drama equally as well. She was a light. I call her the spiritual showrunner of our show. She’s the glue, she keeps us going. She’s the puppetmaster, she’s doing all of this tonight. So, she’s here.”
The Tony Award winner and Emmy-nominated actress died in December at age 87 from complications of lung cancer before Season 1 had wrapped.

Emmy award-winning actor Nathan Lane is known for his roles in a lot of projects. He was the voice of Timon in Disney's The Lion King, Albert Goldman in The Birdcage, and he recently appeared as Dominick Dunne in the controversial Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. However, there's one role Lane says he didn't get that ended up going to "the guy from Seinfeld" for one, ridiculous reason: homophobia.
Lane, who came out as gay in 1999, recently spoke to Vanity Fair about his life and career. When asked if he feels that his roles in Hollywood were limited because of homophobia, the Tony award-winning actor said he didn't know if that was the case in every part he lost out on, but he did provide a specific example of when it did rear its ugly head. The movie in question? The beloved 1996 family sports comedy Space Jam.

In a Vanity Fair interview The Producers and The Birdcage star claimed that being an out gay actor cost him roles in his career
The Producers star Nathan Lane says that “homophobia is alive and well” in Hollywood and that being an out gay actor cost him roles.

Tony and Emmy winner Nathan Lane is best known for The Producers, The Lion King and The Birdcage, but there were also roles he did not get — and for the wrong reasons.
Asked in a recent interview with Vanity Fair if homophobia limited his opportunities, Lane equivocated a bit and then offered one specific example.
“I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but I can’t help but think that it played a part. I was told it did impact a movie that I didn’t really care about: Space Jam. I was up for the part that the guy from Seinfeld wound up playing.”
That guy from Seinfeld was Wayne Knight, who ended up playing Michael Jordan’s assistant in the Warner Bros. film.

Actor Nathan Lane was passed over for a role in the 1996 movie Space Jam, a decision he feels was likely due to homophobia. However, it's not the "role that got away" for Lane, as he says he actually felt relieved that he didn't have to do the film.
Lane addressed his near-casting in Space Jam during a new interview with Vanity Fair. He was asked about how much homophobia might have impacted his career during that era, and that had the actor remembering the situation with Space Jam. As Lane explained, he was in consideration to play Stan Podolak, Michael Jordan's assistant, who was ultimately played by Wayne Knight. Lane also said he'd been told that the film's director, Joe Pytka, thought he was "too gay" for the role.
"I don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, but I can’t help but think that [homophobia] played a part [in limiting movie roles]," he said.

Nathan Lane said in an interview with Vanity Fair that he lost out on a role in 1996’s “Space Jam” and was told it was because he was just “too gay.” While Lane said he never knows “what goes on behind closed doors,” he “can’t help but think” that homophobia “played a part” in shaping the roles he could or couldn’t do. He cited “Space Jam” as an example.
“I was told [being gay did] impact a movie that I didn’t really care about: ‘Space Jam.’ I was up for the part that the guy from ‘Seinfeld’ wound up playing,” Lane said of being up for the role of Michael Jordan’s publicist and assistant Stan, ultimately played by Wayne Knight in the movie. “I was up for that part. Nathan Lane’s star-making, Golden Globe-nominated turn in 1996 film “The Birdcage” didn’t have as much of an impact as the actor thought it would. Lane detailed how he actually lost out on roles — specifically one of which was “Space Jam” — after leading the comedy about a proud queer couple forced back into closet for the benefit of their heteronormative son and his would-be fiancée’s conservative family.
Lane has previously said that he was “not prepared at all” to publicly come out as gay when “The Birdcage” was released and was “terrified” of being outed at the time; he later came out in 1999. Yet “Space Jam” director Joe Pytka allegedly deemed Lane “too gay” to star as Michael Jordan’s assistant in the film, which was also released in 1996. Wayne Knight instead was cast.

If The Golden Girls had gay besties, they’d totally be the sunshine boys of Mid-Century Modern. Unapologetically queer and audaciously TV-ma, Hulu‘s new comedy from Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan essentially redesigns Golden Girls retirees Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche into buddies Bunny, Jerry, and Arthur — played by Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham. The late Linda Lavin is also there as Sybil, Bunny’s Sophia-esque mother. And like the iconic Girls, these guys pack as much sass as Bea Arthur‘s withering glares. “I haven’t done a [multi-camera sitcom] in a very long time, so it certainly helps to do it with some of the best,” says Lane, whose lingerie-biz mogul Bunny invites Bomer’s flaky airline attendant and Graham’s cultured ex-Vogue columnist to move into his sprawling Palm Springs home after the death of their fourth friend, George. “It’s also...

Nathan Lane remembers working with the late Gene Hackman on “The Birdcage” as “the thrill of a lifetime.” Sitting with Stephen Colbert on “The Late Show” Tuesday, the actor shared that one of the more memorable scenes between their characters in the 1996 Mike Nichols movie actually featured unscripted ad-libs that made it all the more memorable.
“I think I told him every morning that he was my favorite actor … He was like Spencer Tracy, you couldn’t catch him acting. He could do comedy or drama beautifully. And he was such a smart actor,” Lane told Colbert before recalling the scene where his character — who is in drag — and Hackman’s sing and dance to “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady.”
“And then at the end, we’re leaving the scene, we’re going into dinner, and I ad-libbed, I said, ‘You know I played Eliza in high school?...

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert rolls into Monday with about a week's worth of topics to discuss. So what should late-night TV fans expect to see on CBS tonight?
President Donald Trump's tariffs have thrown the stock market into disarray. Meanwhile, his administration continues to work with Elon Musk to cut jobs and shrink the federal government's size. These policies and more have been met with hefty criticism, especially from Stephen Colbert.
Expect to hear more of the same from the comedian on CBS Monday night. There will be a brand new episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tonight.
Colbert's monologue will likely take its fair share of shots at how Trump's economic plan and trade wars are shaping up so far. He could also weigh in on Canada's new prime minister and what that means for relations between the U.S. and its northern neighbor.

There are many familiar faces returning to Hell's Kitchen in "Daredevil: Born Again." Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Jon Bernthal are all heading back to where it all began for more wince-inducing comic book action that we've come to expect from this particular corner of the MCU, which doesn't pull its punches and breaks plenty of bones while doing so. Besides the major players once again entangled in the affairs of the Man Without Fear, there are also some newcomers. Sneaking into the world of kings and devils is Daniel Blake, a supporter of Wilson Fisk (D'Onofrio) who's aiding the former convict's campaign for Mayor of New York. But who is this young upstart who believes the former kingpin has what it takes? Well, if anyone in the cast is familiar with the concept of maintaining a front while engaging in criminal activity, it's Michael Gandolfini.

Nathan Lane recalled a time when he had to pull Joaquin Phoenix aside to give him an acting tip after noticing his “Beau Is Afraid” co-star getting a little too intense for the film’s comedic undertone.
The conversation came about during Lane’s appearance on Mike Birbiglia’s “Working It Out” podcast last week. The iconic actor and singer discussed how much he loved working with writer-director Ari Aster and Phoenix on “Beau Is Afraid.” However, Lane said Aster gave him a heads up that Phoenix would likely improvise his own lines instead of what was in the script and requested that he keep the “Joker” star on track. Lane said that after three hours of filming, it became clear that was the case and compared Phoenix’s performance to Olivia de Havilland in “Lady in a Cage,” Neither Lane, Aster nor Phoenix were happy with the takes, which...

The world has lost an absolute legend, with Gene Hackman having passed away at the age of 95. The Oscar-winning actor was best known for his more dramatic performances, including those in classic films like "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven," among many others. 1996’s The Birdcage famously starred Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a nightclub-owning gay couple forced to entertain their son’s girlfriend’s parents: who happen to be a far-right Republican Senator and his wife, played by Gene Hackman and Dianne Wiest.
It certainly seemed progressive for the ‘90s, but in retrospect, the film does have its issues. Which isn’t too surprising, considering that it’s nearly 30 years old. But some of those problems may be explained by director Mike Nichols’ approach to the material.
The great Nathan Lane recently guested on Mike’s Birbiglia’s Working It Out podcast, and revealed that Nichols wasn’t always terribly sensitive when it came to matters concerning the community his film was ostensibly celebrating.
The script, penned by Nichols’ former comedy partner Elaine May, called for Lane, the only openly gay member of the film’s core cast, to use a...

Bill Murray remembered Gene Hackman’s brilliant acting, and occasionally irascible temperament on the set of The Royal Tenenbaums, following the news of Hackman’s death.
Murray happened to give two interviews yesterday where he spoke about Hackman, one to The Associated Press, the other on The Drew Barrymore Show. In both instances, Murray was equally frank about Hackman’s talents as he was about the hard time he gave director Wes Anderson during the shoot.
“He was a tough nut,” Murray told The AP, “but he was really good.

Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, Nathan Lane, Viola Davis, Josh Brolin, and Superman actress Valerie Perrine are among the stars mourning Gene Hackman.
