She was 78 years old.

In the years following her son’s death, Voletta became a media staple in her own right as a result of her efforts to keep his legacy alive.

Voletta also oversaw Biggie’s estate and helped to ensure that his considerable wealth was passed down to his family, including his daughter T’yanna Wallace.

This is appalling. Director Zach Lipovsky, writer Harris Wilkinson, and WWE Studios were given the chance to make a new Leprechaun movie, they cast a professional wrestler (Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl) as the title character, and then they just churned out a dull monster movie. I don’t know how anyone involved thought this was a good idea (“You know what we should do? Take everything people liked about Leprechaun and remove it!”) or how Leprechaun: Origins made it through production.

Acclaimed New Jack City screenwriter Barry Michael Cooper has passed away. He was 66 years old.

Per Variety, Cooper passed away on January 22, 2025, in Baltimore, Maryland. Cooper's passing was announced by a representative for award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee, with whom Lee collaborated for Netflix's streaming series adaptation of She's Gotta Have It.

Born in Harlem, New York sometime in 1957 or 1958, Cooper grew up in Little Washington Heights, spending much of his youth in the Esplanade Gardens co-op. Cooper served as an investigative reporter for The Village Voice throughout the 1980s. His time with the alt-weekly paper led to the publication of his article "Tedd Riley's New Jack Swing: Harlem Gangsters Raise a Genius," which is largely attributed for naming the genre itself back in 1987. Later that year, The Village Voice published Cooper's article "Kids Killing Kids: New Jack City Eats Its Young," which drew the attention of Quincy Jones, who...

Barry Michael Cooper, a writer and producer who co-wrote the blaxploitation ’90s classic “New Jack City” and finished his “Harlem trilogy” writing “Sugar Hill” and “Above the Rim,” died in Baltimore, Md. on Tuesday. He was 66.

Cooper’s death was confirmed by a representative for Spike Lee. The pair collaborated on the Netflix series adaptation of Lee’s debut feature “She’s Gotta Have It.” Cooper served as a producer for both seasons, and a write for three episodes.

Cooper made his feature screenwriting debut with Mario Van Peebles’ “New Jack City,” which he co-wrote with Thomas Lee Wright. The film starred Wesley Snipes and Ice-t as a gang leader and a hardened cop, dodging one another amid a crack epidemic in Harlem. The production represented a career change for Cooper, who had been working as an investigative reporter at The Village Voice beforehand — a tenure that produced the 1989 cover story...

Highlights of the Beyond Film panels include conversations with Chloë Sevigny — who appears in two Sundance 2025 films, “Atropia” and “Magic Farm” — Olivia Colman (“Jimpa”), Marlee Matlin (“Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore”), and Steven Yeun, who stars in and produces “Bubble & Squeak.”

“Past Lives” writer/director Celine Song, Daniel Kaluuya, and “Guardians of the Galaxy” writer Nicole Perlman are also among the panelists. A live podcast recording of Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s “Visitations” will additionally take place; Wood and Noah both produce “Rabbit Trap,” which premieres at the festival.

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the 2025 lineup for its Beyond Film series of talks and events.

Notables participating, with films in the festival, include Chloë Sevigny, Olivia Colman, Steven Yeun and Marlee Matlin, to name just a few. Celine Song, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind Past Lives, and Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) will also be on hand.

Beyond Film talks fall under the program strands of Power of Story, Cinema Café, Film Church, and The Big Conversation, all of which are free to attend, with the exception of Power of Story. Talks will take place in person from January 24–31, 2025, with most offerings to be available to audiences online the day following the in-person event.

Body Count made an appearance Wednesday (December 5th) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performing their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.”

More of an adaptation than a straight-up remake, Body Count’s take on the Pink Floyd classic is highly stylized, and they nailed their rendition on Fallon.

Those familiar with the original song with recognize the overall arrangement and a few refrains (“Hello… is anybody out there?”), but Ice-t and company make the song their own, with the rapper cooly laying down bars that reflect on modern existential crises.

Last week, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Daily Show aired reruns every night. Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Seth Meyers ran an abbreviated schedule, leaving The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as the only show to produce new episodes all week.

Things get back to regularly scheduled programming on Monday, December 2. Every late-night TV show is expected to air new episodes with the exception of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Directed by Calmatic, the visual treatment was filmed entirely in a room painted a muted green — a nod to The Roots’ “The Next Movement” video. A whole lot is going on in the background, but Kendrick notably sits down with a book called How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies and it looks like all the references in the clip serve this exact purpose.

In addition to Menace II Society and Soul Train tributes, the video pays homage to forebears like Ice T and E-40 by echoing their Power and In a Major Way album covers, respectively. There are other references to the likes of Isaac Hayes, Nate Dogg, and Mac Dre as well.

Law and Order: Svu aired its fall finale on Thursday. There was plenty that went down in the episode, and most of it revolved around Dominick Carisi (Peter Scanavino). The Assistant District Attorney and spouse of Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddick) was pulled into a harrowing situation involving hostages.

Spoilers Ahead: A chance visit to a deli leads Carisi to be taken at gunpoint by robbers. He's forced to stand by as one civilian gets assaulted and another killed. He eventually concocted a scheme that forced the two robbers to question their loyalty and take each other out.

Body Count have unveiled the title track from their new album Merciless. The new song and accompanying music video arrive a day before the LP’s release on Friday (November 22nd).

The vicious track pits Ice-t’s bars against a riff that sounds like the intro from Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man.” It creates a doom vibe that drops into a chorus of Slayer-like thrash with ominous gang vocals chanting the song and album title (“Merciless!”). Ice-t proceeds to make his point clear: “I’ve only got one life to live / I got no more fucks to give.”

The Jay Scorsese-directed Nsfw video is quite a sight, recreating the shocking Merciless album cover — Ice-t as a torturous surgeon going to work on a KKK member — as if it were a scene from a horror film. Scorsese also directed the video for previous single “Psychopath,” another homage to horror and splatter films.
