The movie will rep Grammy nominated and Emmy winning music documentary and live event filmmaker Wrench’s narrative directing debut.
Friday Night Lights Emmy winner Jason Katims is writing the script.
Released in 1980, The Idolmaker was Academy Award nominee Taylor Hackford’s first film and earned Ray Sharkey a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. [Editor’s Note: this list was originally published in August 2017. It has since been updated to include more of Soderbergh’s films, including “Black Bag.”]
Steven Soderbergh’s directing career started with “Sex, Lies and Videotape,” a massive breakout that not only launched his career — it changed the industry of independent filmmaking in America. While struggling to find his footing after becoming a household name at age 26, Soderbergh never let himself become frozen by his early success or some preconceived notion of what his career would be. Instead, he dogmatically followed any story that piqued his interest, regardless if it was building the slick “Ocean’s Eleven” franchise or an experimental film he shot in his hometown with friends (“Schizopolis”).
He has been careful to build a career that was commercially viable so as to maximize his ability to be constantly creating and experimenting with films that were sometimes aggressively uncommercial. Along the way, he has fought to be as efficient a filmmaker as possible — constantly trying different approaches and new technology to make...

Many actors have a sliding doors moment in their career when they pass up a choice role in a soon-to-be iconic movie. For some, it isn't a huge deal. Denzel Washington, for example, already had two Oscar nominations and one win under his belt by the time he decided he didn't want to star in David Fincher's "Se7en." Sure, he later came to regret turning away one of the defining films of the '90s, but he was already an established star and would be just fine without it. That isn't always the case when an actor hasn't quite built up the body of work to go around rejecting great parts –- just take Henry Winkler and Danny Zuko in "Grease."
Winkler was virtual unknown when he won the chance to play Fonzie on "Happy Days." Arthur "The Fonz" Fonzarelli started out as a minor supporting character but quickly...

Zoe Saldaña's latest movie, Emilia Perez, is a musical crime film that breaks new ground and has received 13 Academy Award nominations. As unique as it is polarizing, Emilia Perez is a reminder that Zoe Saldaña has been in movies with plenty of music and dance before. One of the most underrated movies of 2000, Center Stage, included a talented cast of dancers, including Saldaña, vying for a coveted position with the American Ballet Academy. Saldana played Eva Rodrigez, a gifted ballet dancer with a bad attitude, in her break-out role.
Fans of Saldaña and Emilia Perez will find Center Stage to be as captivating as it is fun. Saldaña is feisty as ever and showcases her diverse performance abilities in Center Stage in a way that makes it a must-see nostalgic classic.

Wicked continued its reign, as the musical was the top-grossing show on Broadway last week, bringing in $2.3 million and playing to 100 percent capacity.
The Lion King followed with $1.6 million. The revival of Gypsy, starring Audra McDonald, continues to be a high-grossing show, with $1.56 million brought in last week. Hamilton followed with $1.53 million. The top five was rounded out by Sunset Blvd., starring Nicole Scherzinger, which brought in $1.3 million.
Redwood, a new musical starring Idina Menzel, played its first week of seven performances last week at the Nederlander Theatre. Though many tickets were comped for critics and press, ahead of the musical’s opening Feb. 13, the show still brought in a strong $856,603 and played to 98 percent capacity.
And while All In: Comedy About Love brought in just over $2 million in the prior week thanks to its cast led by Jimmy Fallon, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant and Nick Kroll, grosses fell last week as the cast changed.

The debut feature film of Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of legendary body horror auteur David Cronenberg, is quickly rising on Hulu's charts. Sitting at number three as of this writing, Humane was released in April 2024 but didn't receive much attention at the time. The psychological thriller hit Shudder in July of that year, but still didn't make much of a blip. It seems the underrated film is finally getting its due on Hulu.
Humane takes place in an alternate reality Canada, where the climate crisis has prompted the world's governments to institute a euthanasia campaign in order to rid Earth of 20% of its human population. The narrative centers on the Yorks, an estranged family brought together one evening by patriarch Charles. He has a surprise for his children, one that will lead the night into a terrifying nightmare full of twists and turns.

Ask your typical Millennial about "The O.C." — the primetime teen soap that aired on Fox from 2003 to 2007 — and I'm willing to bet that the show's iconic theme song, "California" by Phantom Planet, just started playing in their head. Created by Josh Schwartz, the series starts out by introducing audiences to Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a troubled kid from Chino who ends up in jail after stealing a car with his older brother. When Ryan meets his public defender Sandy Cohen (Peter Gallagher), the big-hearted lawyer offers his aid ... and when Ryan goes back home only to discover that his mother has moved and left him behind, Sandy takes Ryan to live with him in the affluent Orange County. Despite initial concerns from Sandy's wife Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), Ryan fits in pretty well with the Cohens, immediately forging a friendship with her only son Seth (Adam Brody) ... and when he meets...

After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.
The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.
The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.

Just a few weeks back, it was reported that The Simpsons would lose its coveted Sundays at 8 pm Et / Pt time slot, and would be moved to Wednesday nights.

Often called "comics' original orange cat," Heathcliff is the surreal alternative to Garfield, routinely breaking with reality to deliver cerebral and strange jokes that have the ability to take even the most savvy readers by surprise. In publication for over forty years now, Heathcliff has grown steadily more unhinged as time has gone on – to the benefit of generations of readers.
Heathcliff is beloved by those who know the comic, but the strip arguably doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves. First published in 1973, at a time when Peanuts was at its peak, and Doonesbury was doing Pulitzer-prize winning work, Heathcliff was created and illustrated by George Gately until 1998; since then, it has been the product of his nephew Peter Gallagher.
While Heathcliff was always odd, it has become especially weird in the Gallagher years, which have grown increasingly absurd, keeping pace with the increasingly surreal style of internet humor.

Fans of The Far Side will appreciate these Heathcliff comics, which highlight the shared sensibilities of Gary Larson's infamously absurd cartoon and the long-running edgier alternative to Garfield. For over fifty years, comics' "original orange cat" has stirred up trouble, delivering strange and superfluous jokes that have made it one of the medium's all-time greats.
First published in 1973, Heathcliff was created by artist George Gately, who wrote and illustrated the comic until 1998; since then, the cartoon has been produced by his nephew, Peter Gallagher. As of this year, Gallagher has matched his uncle’s twenty-five years of writing Heathcliff.
In that time, Gallagher has shepherded the strip through increasingly weird waters, solidifying Heathcliff’s reputation for bizarre humor. While the cartoon is unique in many ways, its closest peer is, perhaps surprisingly, The Far Side.

Many writers got their start on the online story-sharing site Wattpad, and these Wattpad original stories have all been adapted into movies and TV shows. Since fandom activities began to grow with the release of the original Star Trek series and the prevalence of conventions, there has been fanfiction. Many websites have cropped up over the years that have allowed fans to stretch their creativity through fanfiction, like Archive of Our Own and Wattpad. Both platforms also allow writers to share original writing, hone their craft, and grow an audience.
Because of the growing popularity of Wattpad among writers, there are many writers who have utilized the platform to allow their audience to find them online. They self-publish their stories or can even end up finding an agent because of that audience. There are a handful of those writers who have gone on to become bestsellers or see their work adapted for the screen.

While some question the power of celebrities to guarantee box office success, there is one actor whose name value seldom wavers in getting people into the theaters. Tom Cruise has become one of the world's most recognized and revered actors, with an impressive filmography of fan favorites throughout the decades, including Risky Business (1983), Top Gun (1986), Mission Impossible (1996), Jerry Maguire (1996), Minority Report (2002), and the list goes on and on up to the modern era with massive blockbuster his like Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and fan favorites like Edge of Tomorrow (2014).
His success as an actor has remained prevalent for decades, despite controversies involving his association with the Church of Scientology and some oddball interviews (who can forget Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey's couch in 2005?). Still, Cruise remains best known as an actor who is very much in charge of his career trajectory. That is what makes his first and last directed work such an oddity.

Gypsy, the much-anticipated musical revival starring Audra McDonald, was at standing room only during its first week of previews at the Majestic Theatre, grossing $770,349 for only three performances. At that rate, the production is sure to rank among the top grossing shows on Broadway in the coming weeks.
With an average ticket price of $160.19, Gypsy was at 100.8% of the venue’s capacity for the Broadway week ending November 24. Directed by George C. Wolfe, the revival of the Arthur Laurents-Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim classic officially opens December 19, with McDonald, Danny Burstein and Joy Woods leading the cast.
At the opposite end of the Broadway grosses spectrum last week was Tammy Faye, the critically panned Elton John-Jake Shears musical about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. The 2024 Family Guy holiday special, "The Gift of the White Guy," delivers the same irreverent comedy the show has become known for, with nothing very special about it. That is not to say the episode is bad, it has several laugh-out-loud moments, but in a series with well over 400 episodes, it becomes a challenge just to improve on itself. And with plenty of holiday specials in the past 25 years, this episode doesn't break the mold.
Family Guy is an animated series following the eccentric Griffin family. “I’ve always felt very protective of her,” Peter told The Independent. “First fame is toxic. First fame can kill you. She was 16 years old when she started working with us, so just the fact that she’s still alive, I’m just so grateful.”
He noted that his experience with the early days of fame was so much different. If you were unaware, he played Danny Zuko in a production of Grease on Broadway in the late ’70s.

Broadway newcomers Sunset Blvd. and Romeo + Juliet, both in previews, topped the $1M mark in weekly grosses last week, while interesting things were happening over at Wicked: The long-running musical had its best week, by far, of the 2024-25 season, hitting nearly $2.5M.
The Wicked figure is a leap of $440,313 over the previous week and easily bests its previous season high of $2.2M from July. Looks like all the publicity surrounding the upcoming November movie release is having a definite Broadway impact, and — bonus points — Broadway favorite Donna McKechnie recently joined the production as Madame Morrible.
The Wicked take — $2,486,411, to be exact — put it at No. 1 on the Broadway box office chart for the week ending October 13, edging out its usual neck-and-neck rival The Lion King, which came in at No. 2 with $2,198,308.
The stellar number helped push total Broadway receipts to $34,268,132 for the week ending October 13, a bump...

The O.C. was one of the staple teen dramas of the aughts, partly thanks to its iconic cast, including names like Mischa Barton. It takes place in Orange County (The O.C.) in Southern California and ran for four seasons before the network canceled it. The show's catalyst was when Ryan Atwood, a troubled teenager from a broken home in Chino, moved in with the Cohens, a wealthy family living in an upper-class community in Newport Beach. Ryan and the Cohens, which included Sandy, Kirsten, and Seth, came from different worlds, but they eventually learned how to operate as a unit.
Although The O.C. contained many side plots and important storylines, the central one revolved around how Ryan fit in with the rest of the characters. The culture clash between Ryan's upbringing and the Cohens' was a main conflict throughout the series because he was so young and had a rough childhood.

Rachel Bilson and a few close friends welcomed fans back to The O.C.
Bilson, who starred on the Fox teen drama series The O.C. as Summer Roberts, was joined by show creator Josh Schwartz and executive producer Stephanie Savage on Wednesday in West Hollywood to celebrate the 21st birthday of the fondly remembered program that signed off in 2007 after four seasons. A surprise musical guest at the event was the band Phantom Planet, who performed several tunes, including their single “California,” which was used as the show’s theme song.
“It’s hard to believe that was 21 years ago,” Bilson told fans at the event. “And you know what I realized? I was 21 when we shot the pilot. I know — mind-blowing.”

On the set of his next movie, actor, filmmaker, and pop culture legend Bruce Campbell is in the midst of an epiphany. It’s the first week of his latest directorial feature, and his first dealing with a subject matter as elegiac as that of a widower fulfilling the final wishes of his wife. It’s delicate stuff, and the earliest batch of dailies have just come in. So it of course has to be right now that the obvious potential problem hits him like a thunderbolt.
“Ah shit, my leading guy is 66 years old,” Campbell grumbles to himself. As soon as the words leave his mouth, he likewise fails to suppress the smile. In this moment, and later when he recounts the episode to us in the Den of Geek studio at San Diego Comic-Con, he’s chuckling. After all, Campbell is his leading guy.

Exclusive: Rob Minkoff (The Lion King) is set to direct Tenor by Night, a live-action comedy musical fantasy based on the Chinese-themed stage musical of the same name, created and produced by James Chiao.
Written by Peter Barsocchini (High School Musical franchise), the film is described as a whimsical, cross-cultural comedy about a Chinese American businessman who gives up his dreams of becoming a world-famous singer to build a successful mannequin business to support his family. Through a series of magical misadventures, a group of mannequins are brought to life which leads to a second chance to fulfill his dreams.
The project is believed to be the first Chinese-themed musical coming up for production in Hollywood since Flower Drum Song in 1961. Hope is for it to draft on the success of such recent Chinese American-themed box office hits as Everything Everywhere All at Once and Crazy Rich Asians. Casting for the pic is now underway.
