At 2025's 97th Academy Awards ceremony, 10 films vied to win Best Picture. However, the Oscars have not always included this many in the lineup. In fact, less than 30 years ago, there were only five nominees in the category. And the one that came away victorious in the 71st Academy Awards continues to be a controversial pick.
To some, Shakespeare in Love was an unexpected hit when it was released in 1998. Starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow (also named Best Actress), it excelled as a period drama and a fun historical reimagining. While some moviegoers continue to believe it did not earn its win, further reflection indicates that the Academy did, in fact, make the right decision.

For some, family is everything. If you cross them in any way, there will be hell to pay. It is the nature of things, especially when your family wields power like a sword waiting to slice dissenters in twain. Today, Paramount+ is ready to give Guy Ritchie fans a taste of the filmmaker’s next star-studded series, Mobland, starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosman, and Helen Mirren. Paramount’s MobLand trailer is an explosive look at what happens when the wrong people think they can change the pecking order of a well-oiled criminal empire. Good luck with that, friend.
MobLand debuts on Paramount+ on March 30. It centers around two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch across the globe and the fiercely loyal “fixer” charged with protecting one of them at all costs.

The sequel to The Handmaid's Tale— Hulu's popular and award-winning series based on the Margaret Atwood novel — continues to beef up its main cast. The series, titled The Testaments (like the book on which it is based), recently began shoring up its main team, bringing Chase Infiniti on board to play one of the three main roles, and confirming the return of Ann Dowd's Aunt Lydia. But now we finally know who will be the third woman to join the fold: and that honor belongs to actress Lucy Halliday.
Halliday — who co-starred in the acclaimed 2022 independent film Blue Jean — will tackle the role of Daisy, one of the three co-leads, alongside Dowd's Lydia and Infinit's Agnes. The story takes place approximately fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, where the last gasps of Gilead are currently being felt and still wreaking havoc on the populace of what once was America.

The American Horror Story universe has been replete with chilling performances by some of the most talented actors in Hollywood. Among them is the remarkable Jessica Lange, who joined Ryan Murphy's AHS during its first season as Constance Langdon, a woman who lived next door to the subtitular Murder House. She then starred as Sister Jude in Asylum, Fiona Goode in Coven, and Elsa Mars in Freak Show. She reprised the role of Constance Langdon for 2018's Apocalypse, which marked her last time appearing in the horror anthology. Murphy's been teasing getting some of the show's most beloved stars back for its upcoming thirteenth season, but we can now count Lange out.
At the Glasgow Film Festival premiere of her latest movie, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Lange firmly dismissed the possibility of a return to AHS.

The sci-fi and fantasy TV world always seems on a paradoxical precipice: Too many good shows get canceled, yet too many keep returning to television. Not that we’re complaining about the latter.
Several long-awaited shows from some of the biggest franchises around, including Marvel, Star Wars, Doctor Who, and The Walking Dead, will return in 2025. Given that most TV shows take a year or longer at least to release the next season, it can be hard to keep track of where we left off in the story. And without catching up with the previous seasons, one could unintentionally commit what is considered in the sci-fi or fantasy community the ultimate blunder: not understanding the references or Easter eggs.

The past decade has seen some surprisingly high-profile films cancelled, shelved, axed or scrapped. Here they are – all 10 of the poor things.
Film history is littered with abandoned productions, false starts and projects that have withered on the creative vine. What is relatively unusual, though, is for a movie to get through weeks of shooting only for it to be axed at the editing stage.
When we consider how much work goes into a film production before a camera even rolls – casting, building sets, securing locations – the notion that a film could be scrapped at such a late stage seems almost inconceivable. Particularly given that, in the past, films have survived genuine tragedies – The Twilight Zone, The Crow – and still made their way into cinemas.

If The Bad Place ever existed on Earth, it would look a hell of a lot like Gilead, in our estimation. So it makes sense that The Good Place star D'Arcy Carden has joined the fold for the sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale. Though production on the show has already wrapped, Hulu is only just now dropping these fascinating casting tidbits in preparation for the series' return to our screens on April 8, 2025.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed D'Arcy Carden's casting in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6. She's not the only new, familiar-to-us face to hop aboard the series in its final outing: late last year it was announced that Veep creep and fellow comedy stalwart Timothy Simons had also joined the cast in a guest-starring capacity. As it currently stands, we have no further details on either actors' characters, but regardless of which side of the revolution they're on,...

Blessed be the fruit, for it giveth us another slice of Margaret Atwood's universe. The author's follow up to The Handmaid's Tale—The Testaments — is also slated for a television adaptation of its own, and is nearing a full series order thanks to some key casting moves. Joining the iconic Ann Dowd — who will be reprising her Aunt Lydia role — is AppleTV+'s Presumed Innocent star Chase Infiniti.
In an exclusive report from Deadline, Infiniti was announced as one of the novel-turned-streaming-series' three co-leads alongside Dowd, putting the show even closer to getting the green light from Hulu. And it's no small role, either. In fact, Infiniti's character, Agnes, has a major connection to Elisabeth Moss's character June.

Did anybody think that The Handmaid's Tale would be even more prescient heading into its final season? Surely not, but here we are! The sixth season of the Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood's novel has never strayed from striking a chord since its debut in 2017 — but with the way things are going in the ol' United States of America, the fight for a revolution in Gilead feels eerily too close to home and the future many people seem to want for this country. So, naturally, we're looking forward to seeing how June (Elisabeth Moss) burns it all down in the end.
Maybe it'll give us all a few pointers as we fall deeper into the dystopian fascist hellscape that the more extreme conservatives among us want. That is assuming we can make it to April 8 when the sixth and final season premieres. In the meantime, the series also gave us a chilling,...

Exclusive: The adaptation of Booker Prize-winner Shuggie Bain has emerged as one of the BBC’s “stuck in limbo” projects as drama boss Lindsay Salt blames a “perfect storm” for the funding crisis but says “we are as creatively ambitious as ever.”
BBC shows that have been greenlit but do not have the budget to get to screen have been the talk of UK TV circles ever since super-producer Jane Featherstone told a public inquiry that the BBC has “multiple shows which through no fault of their own they can’t fund.”
Two weeks later, the BBC acknowledged in a submission to the same parliamentary inquiry that it is struggling to get shows across all genres into production, “even those that have been greenlit by our commissioners.” Wolf Hall director Peter Kosminsky said in his submission that there are 15 such shows across the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, with BBC...

In 1994, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg -- three of Hollywood's biggest power players -- united to form a brand-new major motion picture studio called DreamWorks, something that hadn't been attempted in decades. The trio of execs had three stipulations: they wouldn't make any more than nine films a year, they would be allowed to make movies for other studios, and they would be able to go home in time for dinner.
For three years, the trio would wrangle contracts and make deals with various music, film, and television entities to make sure it was standing on solid ground and could handle being the outsize business entity they wanted it to be. In 1997, DreamWorks finally released its first three movies: "The Peacemaker," "Amistad," and "Mouse Hunt." The year after, the studio broke into feature animation with the bad-but-popular CGI insect film "Antz" and the highly acclaimed and very good "The Prince of Egypt,...

Gwyneth Paltrow fought with Harvey Weinstein? ( Photo Credit – Instagram; Flickr )
Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t just win an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love—she went to war with Harvey Weinstein behind the scenes. Paltrow didn’t hold back in her Variety cover story celebrating two decades since her Oscar win, calling the disgraced producer a “bully” and revealing just how many battles they had.
“I wasn’t scared of him,” Paltrow said, recalling her early days at Miramax. As the studio’s golden girl, she felt it was her job to stand up to Weinstein. And boy, did she.
The Emma Money Showdown
The first significant fight? Emma is the 1996 flick in which Paltrow earned praise and a big paycheck. When Weinstein tried withholding her back-end compensation, Paltrow didn’t just roll over. “I got him to pay me something,” she said, describing the legal letter they sent with the check.

England's Queen Elizabeth I is a renowned and complicated historical figure who made unique contributions to Western civilization. As a result, it's not surprising that there are plenty of movies about Elizabeth I to choose from. While the English royal family has always been a source of interest for viewers across the globe, TV shows and movies keep that spark of intrigue alive. The line of succession in British history is a bloody one, full of political intrigue, scandal, and reform that makes for great television and movies.
Few royals are remembered as Elizabeth I was, and she has quite a unique place in history. One of England's most esteemed monarchs, Queen Elizabeth I is known as the "Virgin Queen," as she famously never married. The Handmaid’s Tale is officially back in production on its sixth and final season.
Hulu revealed Friday that cameras began rolling on the series’ conclusion on September 3, sharing a photo of series star Elisabeth Moss holding the slate for the first scene of Episode 1, which she will also be directing.
Along with the production announcement, Hulu also said that Season 6 will debut in spring 2025.
The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes.
Season 5 follows June (Elisabeth Moss) in the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) murder and the consequences she must face for her role in the gruesome slaying. At a minimum, she will have to face off with his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and on some level Gilead. But mainly, she will be forced to redefine her identity and purpose,...

James Graham, the creator of Sherwood, Dear England and Brexit: The Uncivil War, has urged the creation of “new universes” and greater risk taking in place of TV’s gatekeepers “falling back on tried and tested IP.”
Delivering this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart lecture, the prolific British scribe argued passionately for greater working class representation in the TV industry, along with criticizing commissioners’ ongoing temptation to opt for “source material, adaptations and expanded universes.”
Graham used the annual Edinburgh platform to plead for “new universes, which means – taking risks.”
He added: “New stories have to be at the heart of commissioning – scripted, non-scripted, factual, fictional … even in the most difficult climate, where the temptation, and we’re witnessing it, is to fall back on tried and tested IP.”
The industry should see “risk” as a long-term “vital” investment in the future health of the sector, Graham said, coming...

Harvey Weinstein employed an aggressive marketing campaign to overthrow one deserving film from the Oscar race in 1999. Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan was released in July 1998 and was one of the best films of the year. However, Miramax’s relatively unpopular film, Shakespeare in Love, went on to win the prestigious Academy Award for Best Picture.

The film’s Oscar win is largely controversial and can be attributed to Weinstein’s politicking at the time. Weinstein even kickstarted a negative whisper campaign against Saving Private Ryan, spreading the perception that the Spielberg war drama was all in the opening minutes.

Lisa Westcott, the British makeup artist who won an Oscar for her work on 2012’s Les Misérables, has died, her husband told The Hollywood Reporter. She was 76.
Westcott died July 30 at her home in Oxford with her husband, Jeremy Ancock, and her twin children, George Ancock and Harriette Rothwell, with her. She was a staunch advocate for crew workers’ rights and fought fiercely for them to be upheld over the years, her family said.
She shared the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling with Julie Dartnell for their efforts on the musical’s film adaptation that starred Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
The pair were photographed accepting the prestigious prize from Jennifer Aniston and Channing Tatum 11 years ago, beaming as they posed for photos afterward.
Westcott also earned two consecutive Oscar nominations for Mrs Brown (1997), starring Judi Dench, Billy Connolly and Gerard Butler, and Shakespeare in Love (1998), with Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes,...

Recent adaptations failed to show how Holmes and Moriarty met, but Young Sherlock has the opportunity to fill that gap.
Sherlock Holmes is returning to TV with the series Young Sherlock, directed by Guy Ritchie, and thanks to one character, it can finally answer a big question about the famous detective and his equally famous archenemy, Moriarty. Guy Ritchie is no stranger to the world of Sherlock Holmes after directing Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in 2009 and 2011, with Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson.
