Dennis McDougal, who covered Hollywood for the Los Angeles Times before writing biographies of Lew Wasserman, Bob Dylan and Jack Nicholson, died Saturday of injuries suffered in a car crash. He was 77.

McDougal and his wife, Sharon, 76, were driving from their home in Memphis to visit family in the Los Angeles area when their car was rear-ended on Interstate 10 near Palm Springs, his granddaughter Megan Cole Lyle told the Times.

The couple was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he died. Sharon McDougal died of her injuries two days later.

McDougal’s 1998 book, The Last Mogul, Lew Wasserman, McA and the Hidden History of Hollywood, was ranked No. 59 by The Hollywood Reporter on its October 2023 list of The 100 Greatest Film Books of All Time.

It's hard to see from the outside just how strange the cult of celebrity is. When someone rises to the level of fame that creates a true 'movement' around their art, an entire society, sometimes even the world, gets caught up in the ideas of their genius. We rarely get a moment to look at this, and what it means or could lead to, because we are all under the spell. Opus wants to solve that problem, with writer/director Mark Anthony Green holding a mirror to this phenomenon from the very first frames of the movie. We watch in slow motion as people of all ages and walks of life 'rock out' to some pop-phenom's music. Becoming the observer of this makes it all instantly silly, strange, and a bit creepy.

But it's not that weird. We've seen fans drooling, falling, and dying for glimpses of their celebrity idols for decades.

One of last year's biggest box office bombs has become a hit on Amazon Prime Video as the Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man - the singing anthropomorphic chimpanzee movie - hit number two in the United States and Canada. As of this writing, the film sits at numbers six and five, respectively.

The film premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival last August before debuting on Christmas Day in the United States and in Australia and the UK the next day. Despite its surprisingly high 88% critical and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the $110 million production completely bombed at the box office. It earned a measly $20.3 million worldwide with only $1.9 million domestic. That doesn't include marketing costs and revenue sharing with theaters, which could make it one of the biggest box office bombs in history.

While Kylie is basking in the excitement of her new relationship, Timothée remains wary. The actor, known for valuing his privacy, is said to despise reality TV drama and is uneasy about his personal life becoming tabloid fodder.

With movie awards season over, and rumors that Adrian Brody’s Oscar acceptance speech is finally coming to an end, the year 2025 sees a surprising amount of faces coming straight back into the conversation. For one, Zoe Saldaña will be putting her Supporting Actress Oscar to good use on the publicity trail for one of the biggest tentpoles of the year: James Cameron’s Fire and Ash, the third in the Avatar series, in which she reprises her role as Na’vi princess Neytiri.

It doesn’t seem especially likely that lightning will strike twice for Saldaña, but the win will bring extra gravitas to the franchise, which secured four nominations (including Best Picture) last time. Joan Baez shared a stern message about U.S. politics during her Wednesday night appearance on the season premiere of “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney.”

Before telling a story about Martin Luther King Jr., who she said was a “funny person,” Baez paused the show to “set the context” for the current state of American leadership.

“You said I could say anything I want out here,” Baez said to Mulaney. “We’re all here to be silly and have fun, and as long as we recognize the fact that our democracy is going up in flames…we’re being run by a bunch of really incompetent billionaires.”

While she never mentioned them by name, Baez was most likely referring to President Donald Trump and Tesla founder Elon Musk, who has been slashing federally funded programs through his Department of Government Efficiency.

Willie Nelson will celebrate his 92nd birthday this April with his 77th solo studio album, as the country legend has announced his latest LP Oh What a Beautiful World.

Due out April 25 — four days before Nelson’s 92nd birthday — the 12-song album is a collection of songs either written or co-written by fellow country great Rodney Crowell, who also guests alongside Willie on the first single and title track, “Oh What a Beautiful World”:

Willie Nelson cannot be stopped — and thank god for that. The legendary songwriter has announced a new album, marking his 154th (!!!) studio LP and 77th solo effort. It’s called Oh What a Beautiful World and is set to arrive on April 25th via Legacy Recordings. As a preview, Nelson has unveiled the title track.

Oh What a Beautiful World continues Nelson’s history of spending an entire album interpreting the work of a notable songwriter. This time around, he’ll be taking on 12 songs either written or co-written by Texas artist Rodney Crowell, someone whose career often intersected with Nelson’s. Pre-orders are ongoing.

The result is the filmmaker’s remastered documentary, Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party, now streaming on Paramount+. It features never-before-seen 16mm footage shot during the rock-and-roll band’s Long After Dark era from 1982 to 1983. “I’ve been obsessed with Arthur Rimbaud since I was 17,” director Jessica Benhamou says. “He started writing poetry when he was 15 – some of the most celebrated poetry in France he wrote as a 15-year-old, and then he dramatically stopped writing poetry aged 20.”

“I remember being so upset when I finished his biography. I’ve only got three years left! This was a person that really followed their passions, went into things absolutely, and there’s something quite romantic about that.”

John Mulaney is diving headfirst into the talk show world. The comedian is set to premeire Everybody's Live on Netflix on March 12.

The success of Mulaney's Everbody's in LA snowballed into his latest project with the streaming service. Airing live on Wednesdays, the new talk show will feature Mulaney with a rotating cast of special guests and interview subjects.
