Is it possible to steal a movie out from under George Clooney and Brad Pitt, two of the matinee idols of our time? With “Wolfs,” Austin Abrams makes the case that you can.
The 28-year-old star, perhaps best known up to this point for dancing shirtless onstage to Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero” in a flamboyant musical sequence in HBO’s “Euphoria,” again finds himself in a manner of undress in Jon Watts’ Apple TV+ comedy film. Here, he’s down to only his briefs and a pair of crew socks, running around Lower Manhattan trying to evade two fixers (Clooney and Pitt) toiling until twilight to clean up his mess.
In the big-budget but minor-key comedy written and directed by Watts — in a return to movies-for-adults form after his duties on the Tom Holland “Spider-Man” films — the charismatic Abrams is simply known in the script as “Kid.

Emmy-winning actor Nathan Lane was able to channel his performance as legendary crime reporter Dominic Dunne in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story by going through the writer’s famous son, actor Griffin Dunne.
Lane’s performance is winning praise for his harnessing of the pain and loss Dunne held onto for decades after the double blow the writer experienced in the early 1980s of a tragedy and an injustice; as the series shows, the perceived miscarriage of justice informs Dunne’s perspective on crimes he covers for Vanity Fair and leads to his speculations about the nature of the Menendez boys’ relationship, which are peppered throughout the limited series. But it wasn’t only through researching his crime and trial reporting that Lane got into the mindset of the late legend.

Emmy nominee D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai (Reservation Dogs) has joined the cast of Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught Stealing from Sony Pictures, Deadline has confirmed.
Caught Stealing follows Hank Thompson (Austin Butler), a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ’90s NYC. We hear Woon-a-Tai will play the role of Dale, Hank’s best friend since high school.
In March, Deadline exclusively revealed the project, based on the books by Charlie Huston, was in the works, with Butler set as the lead and Aronofsky as director. Huston penned the screenplay with Aronofsky’s Protozoa producing.
In addition to Butler, Woon-a-Tai joins the previously announced cast of Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoë Kravitz, Regina King, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Will Brill, Bad Bunny and Griffin Dunne.

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is asking viewers to be the jury for the Menéndez brothers. The infamous Beverly Hills siblings murdered their parents in 1989, and were convicted in 1996, but today’s more comprehensive understanding of sexual abuse has sparked renewed interest in the case.
“[The show’s] about the consequences of trauma,” Javier Bardem, who plays the father, José, told Variety at the series Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “Unless [it is] properly addressed and healed, it’s going to have a huge, horrible, dramatic effect on generations to come.”
The cast and creatives of the series described its “Rashaman” approach to the story.
“We wanted to really present a lot of different points of view, and then let the audience sort of decide what to take,” writer and producer David McMillan said. “We are talking about real people … many of them are still alive. We want to make sure that our...

As a note at the end of a series tells us, “Lyle and Erik Menendez maintain the allegation of sexual abuse at the hands of their mother and father. They continue to serve life sentences without the possibility of parole.”

Jon Watts rediscovers his filmmaking joie de vivre with the classic comic thriller “Wolfs,” starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt as a pair of lone-working fixers who find themselves cleaning up the same mess when hired for the same job. Seeing this “Ocean’s Eleven” duo of matinee idols back up on the silver screen together means you’re in sure hands from the start — the witty repartee flowing, the smug suave bandying about, and all in a lean, clean, cooly running-timed comedy that places Jack (Clooney) and Nick (Pitt) into their own sort of “After Hours” late night in New York. That’s because the job gets a lot messier than expected when a guy simply dubbed in the credits as “kid” turns out not to be as dead as the district attorney (Amy Ryan) who brought him up to her hotel room thought. “Wolfs” is slickly directed with a classy touch by Watts,...

Midway through the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building, NYPD Detective Williams (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) complains once again about how true-crime podcasters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) keep stumbling their way into and through murder investigations. Her objection isn’t just to these three civilians consistently putting themselves in danger and interfering with the work of real police, but with the shoddiness of their sleuthing, which this time around has produced so many suspects that they need multiple murder boards to fit them all.

While Only Murders in the Building had thrilled fans with its witty mysteries set in the famous New York apartment building, the Arconia, the fourth season brought a fresh twist—Hollywood came to them.
Charles, Oliver, and Mabel found themselves at the center of a movie adaptation of their podcast, with big stars like Eugene Levy and Eva Longoria taking on roles. At the same time, the gang had to solve their most personal case yet after the shocking shooting of Sazz, a long-time friend of Charles’.
Season four kicked off with the Arconia trio making a trip out to Los Angeles, where a major studio wanted to turn their true crime adventures into a feature film. This threw the eccentric residents of the Arconia together with some of the biggest names in Tinseltown. For a profession that works to make its own labor invisible, stunt performers have taken the spotlight in 2024. First came Ryan Gosling’s “The Fall Guy,” a popcorn movie built around a body double; now comes Season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building,” where the latest mystery’s victim is Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the longtime stand-in for ex-procedural star Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin). Sazz’s disappearance after being shot in the Season 3 finale sets up a season that’s just as daffy as its predecessors, but more thematically focused on the idea of doppelgangers and what they tell us about ourselves.

An extended interview with Scorsese guides us through the filmography of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who made a legendary run of films within the British studio system of the 1940s and ’50s under the banner of their production company The Archers. Scorsese also breaks down what makes their films so special while also illuminating the many points of inspiration for his own body of work.
But as Made in England highlights, the connection runs deeper than anything on the screen. Scorsese befriended Powell in the ’70s after the British filmmaker had slipped into obscurity and helped rehabilitate his reputation. Scorsese also served as an unexpected matchmaker by introducing Powell to the woman he would later marry,...

In David Hinton’s new documentary “Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger,” Martin Scorsese talks about the profound influence the films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger had on him.
A young, asthmatic Scorsese grew up largely an indoor child when American films weren’t licensed to television, so he feasted on the duo’s great British films like “The Red Shoes” and “Tales of Hoffmann.” Co-written and narrated by Scorsese, “Made in England” makes direct connections between a Powell and Pressburger film like “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” and Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” and “Raging Bull.” In one remarkable sequence, Hinton even crosscuts between Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) from “Taxi Driver” and Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook) from “The Red Shoes,” as Scorsese narrates, “They’re both characters on the edge of things, listening, observing other people, always on the verge of exploding.

Griffin Dunne’s family has done so many larger-than-life, unbelievable things that when the actor-director-producer started to write his memoir “The Friday Afternoon Club: A Memoir of Family,” he realized it wasn’t enough to start the story with his complex writer father Dominick Dunne.
In fact, it was impossible to understand the forces that shaped the Dunnes, including his uncle John Gregory Dunne and sister Dominique Dunne — without understanding his father’s abusive upbringing in an Irish Catholic family, his mother’s Mexican heritage and all great love stories, clandestine affairs, celebrity encounters and tragedies that seem to surround them, buffeted with lots of pitch-black mordant humor.
The heart of the new memoir is the 1982 murder of Griffin Dunne’s younger sister, “Poltergeist” star Dominique Dunne. It’s the first time he’s really grappled with telling the story of that pivotal event in his family’s history. The...

Nicole Kidman is ready for more “Practical Magic.” On the red carpet for her new Netflix movie “A Family Affair,” the Oscar winner confirmed to Variety’s Marc Malkin that she is planning to star in the sequel to the 1998 favorite opposite her returning co-star Sandra Bullock. When asked what the storyline for the sequel will be, Kidman said, “You have to ask Sandy.”
“We’ve been circling it for a while, but you know it’s still in [the early stages],” Kidman added.
As previously reported, Warner Bros. announced that a “Practical Magic” follow-up is in the works earlier this month. Kidman and Bullock are set to also produce the project as well. The original followed siblings engaged in a supernatural cover-up after Bullock accidentally drugs and kills Kidman’s abusive boyfriend (Goran Višnjić).
Kidman teased the upcoming sequel a bit more in an interview with People magazine, saying: “Yes, I will be in it.

It would be the odd celebrity who would boast about zero anxiety during their first time hosting Saturday Night Live. But only one host can hold the title of “most nervous guest in the history of SNL.” On this week’s Fly on the Wall podcast with Dana Carvey and David Spade, 1986 host Griffin Dunne staked his claim.
The star of American Werewolf in London and After Hours was on a hot streak in the mid-1980s but skittish about hosting SNL nonetheless. “I would talk to Lorne (Michaels) about my monologue,” he said. “I was kind of nervous about it. And he goes (insert obligatory Lorne Michaels impression here), ‘Well, you know, all the guests, all they do is talk about their opening monologue. Well, that’s not the most important part of the show. It’s just an intro. We don’t care. Take the pressure off.”

On a brisk April afternoon in the East Village, Griffin Dunne steps through a portal to his past. He has hustled up the stairs of an East Village tenement too old for elevators despite its gentrified gleam. The hallways are narrow but clean and the doors look modern, new — until we arrive at the apartment we’re seeking. Layers of chipped paint speak of the passage of decades. The threshold is uneven — an entry to an era of slanting wooden floors, fire escape patios and bathrooms the size of closets. Inside, hats of fantastic shapes and sizes dot the blue walls, and everywhere there are books and flyers about Blondie, the Pyramid Club, Candy Darling, David Wojnarowicz, etc. Here is the habitat of a performance artist, impeccably preserved for decades and in fact still very much in use.

Screenwriter Robin Swicord is best known for her literary adaptations, including films like Little Women, Matilda, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and so on. Therefore, she was the perfect person to bring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s Practical Magic to life. The film is based on the namesake novel from 1995 written by Alice Hoffman and revolves around the story of two sisters who descended from a long line of witches.
Practical Magic (1998) | Warner Bros.
Bringing the book to life was not an easy task for Robin Swicord, who would often find herself in a creative clash with director Griffin Dunne. She once recalled how the director wanted her to adapt the story in a way that it resembled the legendary The Exorcist, and the screenwriter was not at all on board with this.
