TaleFlick, the online story discovery platform launched by “White Noise” producer Uri Singer and former Netflix executive George Berry, is opening its doors to poets in a move it says is driven by a desire to welcome submissions that “capture the essence, history, and vibrant traditions of Saudi Arabian culture.”

Storytelling in the Arab world is traditionally tied to oral history and poetry. The stated goal of opening TaleFlick – which provides writers with a chance to showcase their work to producers and studios – is to build a bridge between Saudi poems and Hollywood.

“Poetry is the heartbeat of Saudi Arabian culture, resonating deeply with its people and heritage,” Singer – who is TaleFlick’s CEO – said in a statement to Variety. “By embracing poems, we aim to honor and elevate this beautiful art form, providing a platform to transform these stories into powerful visual narratives,” he added.

It's practically impossible to talk about Mimi Leder's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Deep Impact" without also cursorily mentioning Michael Bay's 1998 comet-based disaster film "Armageddon." Leder's film was released on May 8, and was presented as a stern and realistic view of what might happen to the Earth if a massive, Mount Everest-sized comet struck. Bay's film was released on July 1, and presented a much more cartoony, ultra-macho version of the same story, this time with a comet the size of Texas. The former was about somber politicians planning for the worst, the latter was about muscular, blue-collar miners flying into space. Curiously, both films were hits; "Deep Impact" made $350 million on a budget of $80 million, and "Armageddon" made over $550 million on a budget of $140 million.

Today, Paramount+ announced that Academy Award winner Holly Hunter will star in the upcoming original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy.

The series will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the galaxy’s most legendary places. Produced by CBS Studios, it will begin production later this summer.

Exclusive: UK director Jon Amiel has signed to direct upcoming feature Sands of Fortune which explores the story behind the discovery of oil in Saudi Arabia and the birth of the country’s petroleum and natural gas giant Aramco.

The feature, being put together by producer Uri Singer under his L.A.-based Passage Pictures banner, revolves around the real-life partnership between American geologist Max Steineke and Bedouin Khamis Bin Rimthan, who together discovered the country’s first oil well in 1938.

The script is written by Bernie Campbell, a long-time strategist and speechwriter who has spent years living in Saudi Arabia and was the first American to write for its ruling royal family.

It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when most people in the world probably didn't know — or care — what a "multiverse" is. And that time was just a few years ago, when the idea of an infinite number of alternate realities was mostly relegated to complex sci-fi stories and sprawling comic book continuities.

A couple months ago, it was announced that the second season of Carnival Row will be reaching the Amazon Prime streaming service on February 17th – three and a half years after the August 2019 premiere of the first season. Now a trailer for Carnival Row season 2 can be seen in the embed above.

The second season of Carnival Row will also be the show’s last. Which makes sense, given the long gap between seasons, but is also a bit disappointing given how much troubled the project was from the beginning. This concept started out with spec script called A Killing on Carnival Row, which Travis Beacham wrote in 2005. At one time, Guillermo del Toro was going to direct the Carnival Row feature film. In James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar," an evil corporate wonk appropriately named Parker Selfridge (Giovanni Ribisi) explains to Grace (Sigourney Weaver) that the distant planet of Pandora is a rich source of a rare mineral called unobtanium. The silly name was immediately tittered at by audiences, doubly so for people who had seen Jon Amiel's 2003 disaster film "The Core," which also featured a rare substance called unobtanium. Frustratingly, the actual makeup and function of this rare fictional ore was never explained. Selfridge definitely wanted it in great quantities, and was willing to commit genocide on the Pandora locals in order to get it, but audiences were never made privy as to why it was so coveted beyond its high monetary value. 

Even more frustratingly, Selfridge has a line of dialogue later in the film explaining that the nearby deposit...

Back in the 60s, Sean Connery got a bit tired of being James Bond. The famously dedicated Scot had ambitions to become an actor celebrated for his versatility but struggled to escape the significant shadow of 007. Thankfully, over the course of the next few decades, Connery would go on to do just that. The first season of Carnival Row was released through the Amazon Prime streaming service way back in August of 2019, so it would make sense if you thought the show was already cancelled years ago. But a second season of the show was ordered before the first season had even premiered, and it’s finally going to be released on February 17th. Not surprisingly, given the long delay between seasons, Amazon has confirmed that Carnival Row season 2 is going to be the end of the show.

James Franco is stepping up his acting comeback and will play one of the lead roles in Danish director Bille August’s post-World War II coming-of-age drama Me, You, adapted from the novel Tu, Mia by Erri De Luca.

Franco will star alongside Tom Hollander (The Night Manager) and Daisy Jacob (Vanity Fair), with principal photography set to take place in Ischia starting in September.

Franco stepped away from acting after a series of allegations of sexual misconduct made by multiple women in early 2018, at the height of the #MeToo movement. Additionally, in 2019, students at Franco’s now-closed film and acting school, Studio 4, sued the actor and his partners accusing them of pushing acting students into performing in increasingly explicit sex scenes on camera. In 2021, Franco and associated entities agreed to pay 2,235,000 to resolve the lawsuit.

Starting his career in entertainment in 1979, Tarlov worked in business affairs at Warner Bros. before executive producing his first feature, “Christine,” based on the Stephen King novel. In 1986, Tarlov produced Sidney Lumet’s “Power,” which starred Richard Gere, Gene Hackman and Julie Christie. In 1995, he produced “Copycat,” starring Holly Hunter and Sigourney Weaver.

In 1990, he worked with the British novelist William Boyd to transform Mario Vargas Llosa’s 1977 book “Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter” into “Tune in Tomorrow,” directed by Jon Amiel and starring Keanu Reeves, Peter Falk, Barbara Hershey, Patricia Clarkson and John Larroquette. The film won the audience and critics awards at the Deauville Film Festival, and was closing-night selection at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mark Tarlov, who produced such films as Copycat and Serial Mom, passed away on July 31st after a battle with cancer. His family made the announcement. Tarlov was 69.

Marvel projects may be drawing a slew of high-profile actors to Australia, but it seems there are also local productions inversely capable of attracting MCU talent.

Christopher James Baker has been back in his native country for the past year following more than a decade in New York, during which he starred in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and also shot the upcoming DC Universe Series, Stargirl.

He has been able to hit the ground running following his return, with roles in Stan’s eight-part mystery drama Eden, as well as Goalpost’s gold rush drama New Gold Mountain.

“Daredevil” alum Erik Oleson is taking over the reins of the fantasy series from Season 1 showrunner Marc Guggenheim. Guggenheim will remain on board as an executive producer for Season 2, but co-creator Travis Beacham is exiting the show entirely.

“Carnival Row,” which debuted back in August, is a period fantasy drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne in a world where humans and mythical creatures co-exist. It was picked up for a second season at the streaming service earlier this summer, about a month before the series premiere.

The series was based on Beacham’s “A Killing on Carnival Row” script, which appeared on the very first installment of the Hollywood Blacklist in 2005. Beacham is said to be exiting the project due to creative differences.

“Carnival Row” will be going into its second season without the man who originally created it.

Variety has confirmed that Travis Beacham, whose Black List feature script served as the inspiration for the show, is departing the series. Beacham co-created the series adaptation with René Echevarria, the latter of whom was the show’s original showrunner. Both will remain executive producers on the series.

Marc Guggenheim began serving as showrunner during reshoots on Season 1, but he will now be scaling back his involvement in the series with Erik Oleson taking over as showrunner on Season 2.

Oleson signed an overall deal with Amazon back in March. He was previously the showrunner on Season 3 of the Marvel-Netflix series “Daredevil” and also worked on the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle.” He has collaborated with Guggenheim in the past on the CW series “Arrow.”

The race to replace “Game of Thrones” has its latest entrant, with Amazon’s new “Carnival Row,” a series that combines fantasy, melodrama, ultraviolence, and strained political allegory. But, for now, the “Thrones” legacy seems safe: This new series reaches for credibility with gruesomeness and exaggeration, falling flat at every turn. It’s painful proof that a genre success cannot be reverse-engineered.

That engineering does seem solid: “Carnival Row,” renewed for a second season before its first has aired, was built to last in our current Comic-Con-fueled universe. Its marquee stars are Orlando Bloom (of the “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” cinematic universes) and Cara Delevingne, and it tells a story whose nastiness would appear, in theory, to be ameliorated by the dreamy magic at its margins.

The creator and cast behind Amazon’s forthcoming big-budget fantasy drama Carnival Row defended the fact that the show went through a number of reshoots.

Orlando Bloom, who stars as human detective Rycroft Philostrate in the eight-part drama alongside refugee faerie Vignette Stonemoss Cara Delevingne, called the reshoots a “gift”.

“It’s hugely ambitious and it was only when we were on the ground and physicalizing so many different aspects of the character development that you could see there were some gaps that we needed to fill in and we’re very blessed that Amazon believes in the show and were right behind it. The confidence to do those reshoots was the greatest gift to us. I’m so grateful that we got to go back and do another take of some of the first work we did,” he told Deadline at the TCA summer press tour.

Amazon has unveiled a teaser trailer for its fantasy drama Carnival Row – set to Billie Eilish’s Bury A Friend.

The Svod service is set to launch the Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne-fronted series on August 30 but you can watch the clip below. It is set to Eilish’s third single, Bury A Friend, from her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go.

Two new trailers for Amazon’s fantastic-looking fantasy series, Carnival Row, were shared at Comic-Con yesterday that they have since been released on line. The trailers focus on the two main characters of the series… Vignette, who is played by Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad), and Philo, who is played by Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings).
