Alain Guiraudie‘s extraordinary and wonderfully twisted new queer noir, “Misericordia,” begins on a long, snaking, winding drive and ends with a man and a woman, who are unrelated and unmarried, in bed, and a light turned out. The French director of “Stranger by the Lake” and “Staying Vertical” reunites with cinematographer Claire Mathon (“Portrait of a Lady on Fire”) for a bleakly funny tragicomedy about how teenage desires, when left unsublimated, rear their grotesque head into your adulthood.
Guiraudie is most celebrated for “Stranger by the Lake,” which Cahiers du Cinema named the best film of 2013 (as they did with “Misericordia” last year). That film is a cult classic in the West that most millennial gay men, even those not proclaiming to be cinephiles themselves, have seen. It was basically gay porn wrapped up in a pseudo-murder-mystery about a gay cruiser’s unhealthy obsession with a mustached killer of men.

The debut of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s live-action Dcu is creeping ever closer, and that means that rumors of what fans can expect are ramping up with it. One big rumor – and it is just a rumor, so let’s not all wet our pants on the outside yet – is that there is one cameo appearance by a big A-lister in Superman that has not yet been unveiled.
Let’s kick this off by saying the original rumor comes from Hollywood insider, Jeff Sneider, so everyone get your salt buckets ready. With that in mind, the suggestion is that Gunn has enlisted a big star to make a small appearance in the summer blockbuster as Superman’s father, Jor-El. While Sneider tosses around names like the child-catcher handing out sweets to unsuspecting children, with the likes of Tom Cruise and Chris Pratt being name-checked, the likelihood of either...

Now updated for February 2025, here’s our pick of 35 genre films – horror, action, sci-fi and more – you can watch for free on Tubi UK.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Look beyond those films, though, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so to save you a bit of time, we’ve done some hunting for you. We’re nice like that.

Being an actor is a wonderful job, for it allows actors to become a variety of different persons and take up roles that allow them to do all sorts of things and get experiences that a normal human being cannot, even with an unimaginable amount of money. Hollywood star Huge Weaving probably knows how it feels, seeing the range of characters and roles he has taken in his decades-long and very prolific career.

We may be getting round 2 of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
In a wide-ranging career tribute and conversation Thursday night in front of a packed crowd at the 2000-seat Arlington Theatre ahead of their receiving the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Cinema Vanguard Award, Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee Guy Pearce, on stage with his The Brutalist co-star and Best Actor Oscar nominee Adrien Brody, made some news.
Moderating the evening, I saved a choice clip of one of Pearce’s memorable early performances as salty drag queen Felicia in 1994’s Australian hit comedy, The Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert to run towards the end of the two-hour tribute, and then asked him what memories it brought back. Playing the role of 007 is a big deal. In fact, just look at how the fans react whenever an actor's name is associated with playing James Bond. It's the same as whenever anyone is linked to the part of Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man, and everyone -- and we mean, everyone -- has an opinion over who would be the best actor for the gig. Needless to say, the hills of the internet become alive with the sound of flame wars.
While the selection of 007s on screen has been terrific across every James Bond movie, there have been a few close calls throughout the years that could have been excellent replacements too. That isn't to say that these picks would be infinitely better than the final actors chosen, but they would have certainly shaken -- not stirred -- the viewer's curiosity at the very least. After all, who wouldn't want to see what Henry Cavill,...

iZombie alum Rahul Kohli has quickly become one of Mike Flanagan's most frequent collaborators, appearing in his Netflix miniseries The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher, as well as his upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck. With one of Flanagan's next projects being DC Studios' Clayface, Kohli is ready to follow the acclaimed filmmaker over to the DC Universe.
However, Kohli is not interested in playing the Dcu's Clayface in the Flanagan-penned feature, which is currently searching for a director. Instead, the actor has expressed interest in playing the iconic Kryptonian villain General Zod in a future Superman project. On his Instagram Stories (via X), Kohli posted a screenshot of a Reddit thread talking about how he would make a good "tactician version of Zod," commenting, "I'd eat this role up. Western movies have long brought audiences a combination of adventure, action and drama through great movies, from classics like Shane to modern hidden gems like Hostiles. However, due to the genre's generally slower pacing than others, it can be difficult for many movies to find a following. Some Westerns, by contrast, offer a faster pacing, better attention to action and memorable characters than others, allowing audiences to enjoy them over and over again.
Westerns have seen some of their best movies gain a strong following through all-star casts and blockbuster-style action, which appeal to fans of genres like action. While some Westerns have grown their appeal by mixing with other genres, like horror and comedy, others were made great through compelling scripts and all-star casts. The genre may not be the powerhouse it once was, but some of cinema's most rewatchable movies come from the Old West.

Although there is a fourth movie connected to The Godfather trilogy, there is a reason that viewers have rarely heard of 1987’s The Sicilian. The Godfather trilogy is often listed among the greatest movies of all time, even though director Francis Ford Coppola’s final installment is generally viewed as a letdown. Coppola’s first two Godfather movies were so influential and acclaimed that the series as a whole is typically viewed as a vital piece of cinematic history, and even The Godfather Part 3 is better than critics gave the belated sequel credit for upon its original release.

James Gunn is busy rebooting the Dceu and creating a new cinematic universe based on DC comics. The most important project in the first chapter is Superman, which is set to release in 2025.
We know that the movie will completely reboot Superman and his supporting characters. Gunn has cast new faces for the franchise, including David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, to build Superman’s world.
This means General Zod, one of Superman’s most famous enemies, will also be recast. Michael Shannon previously played Zod in the Dceu, portraying the Kryptonian military leader who wanted to rebuild Krypton on Earth, no matter the cost. Shannon’s powerful performance made Zod a memorable villain, even though Man of Steel left some fans dissatisfied with Superman’s portrayal.

Actor Michael Shannon brought a menacing gravitas to the Kryptonian General Dru-Zod in 2013's Man of Steel, cementing himself as one of the more memorable villains in the DC Extended Universe. Now, years later, Shannon, Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and most of the other Dceu stars are being replaced with new iterations. This is the result of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking the reins at DC Studios and establishing a new DC Universe, which kicks off next year with Gunn's Superman. Though he is not slated to appear in that film, Zod's recasting is inevitable as one of the most iconic Superman antagonists.
For his part, Shannon isn't particularly upset. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, the star unpacked his mindset behind making Man of Steel as well as any advice he may have for the next General Zod. Of his approach to playing the villain,...

Nothing gets past Kurt Russell, especially coveted pieces of art. In a return to form from the various smooth-talking action figures he became known for starting in the 80s, Russell eats up the screen in the art heist film, The Art of the Steal. A fun crime caper full of cons, pranks, and chases; it's massively underrated, and a fantastic hang-out movie. Russell is in great company, starring alongside Matt Dillon, Jay Baruchel, Terence Stamp, and Jason Jones. Released in 2013, the film received favorable reviews from critics but was a box office dud, barely racking in over 2 million dollars.

It was a few years in the making, but Second Sight Films recently sent their 4K and Blu-ray release of the 1986 classic The Hitcher out into the world, and you can pick up a copy of the 4K release at This Link. Recently, James McAvoy opened up about one of his most iconic roles and why he never followed up on it with a sequel. No, I'm not talking about The Chronicles of Narnia, and I'm definitely not talking about his X-Men films. Rather, McAvoy discussed Wanted, a 2008 film starring him alongside Angelina Jolie and General Zod himself, Terence Stamp. Based on the comic of the same name, Wanted follows an office clerk named Wesley as he uncovers his father's secret double life as an assassin.
The film was a financial success, and the studio greenlit a sequel, but it never came to fruition. Per McAvoy, none of the follow-up scripts were as strong as the first, and then he slowly aged out of the role before the production could be locked in. What he had to say about Wanted throws any hope of McAvoy joining the McU's version of the X-Men into question.

James McAvoy has addressed the reasons why his hit action movie Wanted has not had a sequel, and suggested that he is now too old to return to the role of Wesley. In a time when action stars are getting older we are looking at you Tom Im 62 and still throwing myself out of planes Cruise McAvoy seems like a baby at just 45, but for him, characters like that are a young persons role now.

Before Ella Purnell became a major star on TV, with leading roles in hit shows like Yellowjackets and Fallout, she got her big break alongside a star-studded cast in Tim Burton's Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Alex Proyas’ 1994 film The Crow owes its enduring cult bona fides partly to high-style visuals rooted in peak-era MTV, a churning alt-metal soundtrack and way cool goth-chic fashion sense. But the larger factor behind the sleek thriller’s cultural imprint was the tragic accident during filming that took the life of promising star Brandon Lee at 28, echoing the death at a similarly young age of his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Director Rupert Sanders attempts to slip out from under the original’s shadow by avoiding the word “remake” and calling this a modern reimagining of the source material. That doesn’t make it any less turgid.
Drowning in brooding atmosphere, rain-slicked nightscapes and goopy eyeliner, and tossing in some retro flavor with tracks by Joy Division, Gary Numan and others, the new iteration of The Crow is more focused on aesthetics than storytelling. So it makes sense that...

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace marked the downfall of a once iconic franchise, failing to capture the charm of its predecessors. Nuclear Man, the film's lackluster villain, embodied everything wrong with the movie, lacking depth and memorable qualities. Despite its poor reception, Nuclear Man made a brief appearance in DC Comics, meeting a swift demise in a fitting end.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace brought Christopher Reeve's durable superhero franchise to an ignominious end, serving as a low point for comic book adaptations and movies. Poorly conceived and badly executed, it's remarkable not only for the shoddiness of a supposedly A-list endeavor but for the talent it wasted. With story credit, Reeve cared deeply about the Superman project's message and fought desperately to make it work, while stars Gene Hackman and Jon Cryer hit career low points before moving on to better things.

The 1994 comedy became an instant crowd-pleaser, following two drag queens and a transgender woman (Terence Stamp) as they travel across the desert Outback to perform their eye-popping cabaret act. Years later, the film, written and directed by Stephan Elliott, would find its way to Broadway with a new title: Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical.
Now, buzz has been building about a potential sequel. If Hocus Pocus, Bad Boys, and Beverly Hills Cop can slip back into the limelight, why not Elliots iconic comedy? Pearce, who recently spoke to MovieWeb about his gripping new historical drama, The Convert, which just hit theaters and finds the actor playing an embattled minister in a 19th-century historical epic, took time to comment on Priscilla, noting:

Since its inception in 1977 by creator George Lucas, the Star Wars universe has invited some of Hollywood’s biggest names to participate in telling stories from a galaxy far, far away. On that note, imagine having the chance to star in one of the most iconic film sagas of all time, only to walk away with an unpleasant memory that seemed like it’d never fade.
Can an experience alongside a cinematic legend like Lucas ever be, dare we say, “boring”? Well, for Terence Stamp, acclaimed for his chilling portrayal of the villainous General Zod in Richard Donner’s Superman, a discouraging stint on the set of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace left an indelible mark.

Dating back to classical literature, murder, and mystery have served as the underpinnings of some of the most compelling stories in fiction. When combined, they form intriguing tales of scandal and violence, as detectives and other characters are forced to figure out who killed the story's victim. In cinema, this can form the basis for anything from comedy to gritty, hard-boiled detective stories.
Murder mysteries can reel in audiences of all stripes, playing on the need for people to get to the bottom of a story and figure out who did it. While some of these movies are based on novels, others are fresh stories, some blending social commentary or satire with crime. The genre remains one of the most compelling in cinema and a surefire way to get audiences invested in the plot in a way few genres can.

British director Paul Andrew Williams’ next film is psychological thriller The Nest, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Andrea Riseborough.
Paul Andrew Williams is synonymous with gritty, low budget British filmmaking. He returned to his roots in 2021 with dark thriller Bull, a revenge story featuring a powerhouse performance by Neil Maskell. Bruce Labruce has consistently stuck two middle fingers up at the status quo ever since he and G.B. Jones first began churning out queer punk zines and experimental movies in the late ’80s. As his directing career progressed from a Toronto basement to film festivals and beyond, the co-father of Queercore put those two middle fingers — and the other eight as well — to increasingly subversive use.
Films like “The Raspberry Reich,” “Otto, Or Up with Dead People,” and “L.A. At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.
