Reuniting with director John Swab for his fifth collaboration, the grizzled muscular badass (both on and off screen) returns for a well-made video-on-demand action fare, “Long Gone Heroes,” which works as a throwback to 80s action movies. In some instances, the film also works as a self-reflective measure for some characters, especially Grillo’s Gunner.
Long Gone Heroes (2024) Plot Summary and Movie Synopsis: Who is Julia Peterson?
As the movie opens, we see political journalist Julia Peterson questioning a man named Fede Torres, who has extensive knowledge regarding the collapse of Venezuela, leading to the Venezuelan Crisis under the leadership of Hugo Chavez and then his successor Nicolas Maduro. Hyperinflation leading to the erosion of the country’s currency would lead to its collapse, and according to Torres, one of the primary reasons would be the discovery of crude oil. In 2017, after the US sanctions theoretically would stop the overexploitation...

Johnny Depp hasn’t taken a directorial credit on a feature film (his 50-minute music video “Unloveable” doesn’t count) since he presented The Brave in Cannes in 1997, and that did not go well. Given that unhappy experience, you have to wonder what it was about Modi, Three Days on the Wing of Madness — a portrait of Amedeo Modigliani, a painter and sculptor famous for his talent as well as his taste for drugs, debauchery and scandalizing the straights — might have lured the actor to pick up the virtual megaphone again.
Perhaps Depp saw in Modigliani a kindred spirit? After all, Depp too is famous for his talent but also his proclivity for indulgence, which was brought into an especially glaring, unflattering light over the course of his bitter courtroom battle with his ex, Amber Heard. Still, there are many other wild, druggy geniuses or genius-adjacent types he could have...

Frank Grillo has had quite an interesting film career. Appearing in various roles since the 90s, 2011 saw him breaking out in both Warrior and The Grey. Following an appearance in the MCU as Crossbones, Grillo started to find his niche in the action genre. Now, he’s prepping to join the DC film world as Rick Flagg Sr in Creature Commandos as well as Season 2 of Peacemaker. His latest film, Long Gone Heroes, sees Grillo rescuing his niece from a hostage situation in Venezuela. Given the insanity going on in that country, it’s a very modern story, and you can check out my glowing review.
There are times in life when you just kind of have to pinch yourself and make sure you’re not dreaming. I was lucky enough to have one such moment with actor Frank Grillo during a recent interview. The director had sent him my...

Long Gone Heroes marks the fifth collaboration between director John Swab and actor Frank Grillo beginning with Body Brokers and most recently One Day as a Lion. They might not be great cinema, but they’ve been well enough received, and more importantly, they’ve proven popular enough that they keep getting money to make more of them.
This time out, Grillo plays Gunner, ex-special forces, ex-husband, and all the other usual exes. His niece Julia is a journalist working on a story about a group violating US sanctions and bringing Venezuelan oil into the country. This gets her grabbed by some very dangerous people.
Complicating matters further is that her mother Olivia is not only a US senator,...

Plot: A special forces soldier who has given up country, religion, and even hope, must return to the field of battle to track down his niece, a reporter, caught in the middle of an illegal private contracting operation that went dead wrong.
Review: The political turmoil of Venezuela makes it the perfect setting for a political action thriller. The country has had such issues that the US government warns citizens not to travel there. So it allows a backdrop of corruption and violence while still keeping a grounded reality. Long Gone Heroes takes advantage of this and is able to provide a relevant story while not stepping on anyone’s toes, politically. This is a simple story about a group of “good guys” entering a war-torn country and saving a hostage. And it’s surprisingly good.
When it comes to these lower-budget action films, I never really know what I’m in for.

There’s no stopping the expansion of the Sheridanverse, the sprawl of interconnected dramas about the American heartland created by actor-writer-director Taylor Sheridan. Having exploded into existence with Yellowstone, and grown to include 1883, 1923 and other generation-spanning spinoffs, the Sheridanverse has — perhaps inevitably — reached the realm of Las Vegas fine dining with the opening of the new Four Sixes Ranch Steakhouse, at Wynn. Just days after the limited-time pop-up opened its books, thousands of reservations and dozens of buyout requests came flooding in.
“We have seen incredible demand even before the doors open on September 16,” says Brian Gullbrants, COO of Wynn Resorts North America.
Four Sixes Ranch Steakhouse will take over the space occupied by Wynn’s breakfast and brunch restaurant, Tableau, every evening after Tableau closes for the day. The menu, built around beef sourced from Sheridan’s 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas — which he, along with a group of investors,...

Paramount+’s official Landman trailer begins with Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton explaining that his character’s job in the oil industry is to secure the land and manage the people. And of the two, it’s the people – the second part of the equation – that can get you killed.

Mark Collie (Nashville), Paulina Chávez (The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia), and Demi Moore (Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans) also star.
Jon Hamm (Fargo) appears in a recurring guest role, with Andy Garcia (Expendables franchise) and Michael Peña (End of Watch) guest starring.

Welcome to the world of oil. Those are the ominous words that end the first trailer for “Landman,” Taylor Sheridan’s new drama series starring Billy Bob Thornton, Jon Hamm and Demi Moore. The show will premiere its first two episodes on Paramount+ Nov. 17.
“The oil and gas industry makes $3 billion a day in pure profit. And it’s only getting bigger,” Thornton’s Tommy Norris says in the opening of the trailer. He then outlines that to make that money, you need to do two things: secure the land and manage the people.
“First part’s pretty simple. It’s the second part that can get you killed,” Tommy says.
After he drops that bomb, disaster strikes. Dynamic shots of men in suits boarding private planes and Tommy in his cowboy hat are replaced by a scene of workers on an oil rig. The trailer then cuts to blast as the sound drops out.

As she accepted the Democratic nomination Thursday night, Kamala Harris played up her attorney-general past. “As a prosecutor, when I had a case, I charged it not in the name of the victim, but in the name of the people,” she told the United Center crowd.
This follows a strategy she has pursued since ramping up her campaign. As a Law & Order-themed ad that aired Monday had it: “We need a president who has spent her life prosecuting perpetrators like Donald Trump.”
On one hand, such a tack relies on simple logic. Harris ascended politics on the ladder of her prosecutor reputation. With her opponent convicted of a felony — and him staking his candidacy on the Democrats’ alleged softness on crime — “successful career prosecutor” makes for a stellar defense.
But while perhaps a sound political strategy, Harris’ embrace of her previous job runs her into an unexpected roadblock: Hollywood has...

In what is shaping up to be a rather thin awards season, could a small but formidable film, written and directed by a filmmaker with three Oscar winners in his family, find its way into contention?
That’s what Falling Forward Films is betting on in acquiring the U.S. distribution rights for Jack Huston’s impressive directorial debut Day of the Fight, a black-and-white indie about a once-renowned boxer — played by Huston’s former Boardwalk Empire costar Michael C. Pitt — as he takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he was released from prison.
Indeed, the upstart distributor has already begun mounting an awards campaign for the film, which also stars Nicolette Robinson, Ron Perlman, John Magaro, Anatol Yusef, Steve Buscemi (another Boardwalk Empire alum) and — coming out of retirement to make a brief but shattering appearance — Oscar winner Joe Pesci.

The trailer for Frank Grillo and Josh Hutcherson’s new action movie, Long Gone Heroes, just dropped.
Frank Grillo is known for his roles in films such as The Purge: Anarchy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In Long Gone Heroes, Frank plays Gunner.
Gunner is a special forces soldier who’s seen more than enough horrors to last a lifetime. However, when Gunner’s niece is abducted in South America, he’s forced back into the war. By putting together a team of old and new friends, Gunner will stop at nothing to bring her home safe.
Starring alongside Frank is The Hunger Games and Five Nights At Freddy’s star, Josh Hutcherson. Josh plays computer wiz-kid, David, and by the looks of the trailer seems to be the member of Gunner’s team who is constantly underestimated.
Also starring in the movie are Eden Brolin, Mekhi Phifer, Melissa Leo,...

"You had no idea... what you got yourself into down here." Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for the action movie Long Gone Heroes, another of these generic action thrillers being dumped on VOD. A dime a dozen, am I right?! This one was filmed in Colombia and Puerto Rico (doubling as Venezuela). A special forces soldier who has given up country, religion, and even hope, must return to the field of battle to track down his niece – a reporter, caught in the middle of an illegal private contracting operation that went dead wrong. Another extraction story? Acclaimed actors Andy Garcia, Melissa Leo, Josh Hutcherson, and Frank Grillo star in a non-stop action thriller that will leave you breathless. Also featuring Eden Brolin, Mekhi Phifer, George Carroll, and Wendy Moniz. This looks exceptionally violent and intense, might even be slightly better than most of these generic VOD action movies. You never know?...

Exclusive: John Devaney, CEO and Founder of the Miami-based United Capital Markets, on Wednesday announced the launch of Manor House Films, an equity-driven production company that he says will look to support “unique filmmakers and purpose driven films.”
Already, Devaney has had two occasions to do that through the company — first, as the financier of the addiction-themed drama The Prince, scripted by David Mamet, on which we were first to report. Currently in post, the film from director Cameron Van Hoy chronicles an addict’s tumultuous odyssey through the high-stakes world of power, pleasure, and pain on a transformative journey toward recovery.
Pic’s cast includes Nicolas Cage, J.K. Simmons, Giancarlo Esposito, Andy Garcia, Scott Haze, Simon Rex and more. Multiple sources told us the project was inspired by Hunter Biden, though sources close to the production denied it.

Ocean’s Eleven is the best heist film ever made. Let me explain-
Say you’re fresh out of the slammer, you need money, and the only job prospects you have involve running back to the very lifestyle that got you locked up to begin with. Oh, and did I mention your wife also ran off with a rich casino owner? Yeah…Instant conflict anyone? Now, in a situation like this, there’s only one thing you can do. Round up the old crew for a job that promises to be properly epic, high stakes (literally) and of course perfectly stupid enough to excite your friends. So, if you’re looking to dive into the vault of cinematic treasures that is Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11, or as I call it, the greatest heist movie ever made- then let’s get into it.

Ti West’s “MaXXXine” has slashed its way into theaters. And the third film in the trilogy that began with 2022’s “X” and continued with the prequel “Pearl,” is perhaps the installment most steeped in other movies. This is a movie where, when a character is threatening Maxine (Mia Goth), the porn star that survived the events of “X” and now, circa “MaXXXine” is struggling to make it in mainstream Hollywood in 1985, they send her a newspaper clipping with the headline: “The Texas Porn Star Massacre,” a direct reference to Tobe Hooper’s immortal “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
And that’s just the beginning of the metatextual delights that make “MaXXXine” so special. We thought that we’d talk about five of the movies that fundamentally inspired “MaXXXine.”
Since we’ll be talking about plot specifics, consider this your mild spoiler warning before we get into it.

Benicio del Toro has had enough of schmoozing, small talk and pretending to laugh at people’s jokes in this year’s black-and-white trailer for the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff), which was unveiled, as has become tradition, on Friday evening as part of the opening night festivities of the 58th edition of the fest in the Czech spa town.
Enough is enough, he thinks, while walking through a Berlin train station. And to cheer himself up, he turns to a traditional Karlovy Vary treat that he takes out of a bag, which also contains his Kviff honor statuette.
The Puerto Rican actor and producer received the Kviff President’s Award in 2022 and has now joined a who’s who of stars from Hollywood and beyond in starring in the usually offbeat trailers that don’t take themselves, the celebrities and the award statuette too seriously. Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson,...

Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Helen Mirren, Harvey Keitel, Milos Forman, Danny DeVito, Casey Affleck, Andy Garcia, John Malkovich — what reads like a who’s who of Hollywood star power is also part of the list of big names who have starred in trailers for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, whose 58th edition unspools June 28-July 6.
Typically, the shorts, often in black-and-white, debut during the opening ceremony of the film fest in the picturesque Czech spa town and are offbeat, eccentric, and full of attitude. They feature a previous Karlovy Vary honoree and what they did with their award.
“The idea of shooting festival trailers featuring distinctive representatives of world cinema was born 16 years ago,” Kviff highlighted recently in unveiling the stars who will get special awards this year, namely Viggo Mortensen, Daniel Brühl, and Clive Owen. Added Kviff executive director Kryštof Mucha: “It’s...

Casinos have played prominent roles in many blockbuster films over the past decades with film producers taking advantage of the illustrious settings and glamour provided by casinos. In some of the biggest hits involving casinos, Asian actors have also played their parts in iconic scenes and storylines. These movies also serve as a nice reminder that casinos still very much exist despite the ongoing shift to the online world.
These portrayals of film characters in a physical casino are refreshing to see in a world where live casino games at Cloudbet for example are starting to take over. For the traditional casino players, here are a few movies to get those juices flowing and the actors of Asian descent that have starred in these Hollywood blockbusters.
