The Killer Trailer: Nathalie Emmanuel Is A Deadly Assassin In John Woo’s Classic Action Movie Remake
A new action movie starring Game Of Thrones' Nathalie Emmanuel and Lupin's Omar Sy would always be worthy a hearty "Woo!" in our book. But a new action movie starring that duo that's also a remake of a Chow Yun-Fat genre classic? Now that's worthy of a John Woo! And that's exactly what we get in the high-octane first trailer for The Killer, the legendary action director's upcoming (and long-gestating) remake of his own 1989 bullet ballet banger. Check it out below;
Flying doves? Check. Spectacular gun-fu? Check. Operatic slow-mo explosions? Check. Yeah, we're thinking John Woo's back! After releasing his first Hollywood movie in twenty years with last year's Silent Night, it looks like Woo's really going for broke with his second, which brings a story from his Hong Kong genre heyday into the 21st century with a bang. In this oozingly stylish new trailer, we get to see...

"I'm always good at what I do." Peacock has revealed the first trailer for an action movie called The Killer, an official remake of the John Woo movie from the 1980s. Not related at all to David Fincher's The Killer (also about a hitman) from last year. John Woo is remaking his own movie, after directing last year's Silent Night, but this one will not be getting released on the big screen in theaters. Strangely this is being dumped directly-to-streaming starting in August on Peacock. Universal Pictures presents A Better Tomorrow Films/Atlas Entertainment Production, in association with eOne. An assassin tries to make amends in an effort to restore the sight of a beautiful young singer. The original Woo film is also about a disillusioned assassin who takes on one last hit in hopes of using his earnings to restore vision to a singer he accidentally blinded. The...

Now it’s July, but Trace and I are firmly in a Christmas frame of mind thanks to our very first Stanley Kubrick film on the podcast: 1999’s Eyes Wide Shut.
In the film, married doctor Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) has his world rocked when his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman) discloses a fantasy involving infidelity.
The revelation sends Bill spinning out into the secret sexual world of New York where seemingly everyone is having sex except him. Featuring an iconic (MPA-tampered with) orgy sequence and plenty of queer undertones, Eyes Wide Shut isn’t the thrilling odyssey audiences expected,...

Exclusive: Arthouse streamer and distributor Mubi is set to re-release Tarsem’s cult 2006 film The Fall in a newly restored 4K version from 27 September 2024 in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Benelux, Turkey and India. The Match Factory is handling sales for the rest of the world.
The 4K restoration will have its world premiere at this year’s Locarno Film Festival where it will play on the Piazza Grande. Mubi will subsequently stream it on its service.
Set in Los Angeles, circa 1920s, the visually striking movie charts the story of an immigrant girl in a hospital recovering from a fall who strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man. He captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination.
Filmed over four years in 20 different locations across the globe, the movie starred Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru and Justine Waddell. The film was originally presented by David Fincher and Spike Jonze, with a script from Dan Gilroy and Nico Soultanakis.
Reviews were mixed for the film and it failed to ignite at the box office, but its visuals were highly praised and Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars, calling it a singular work: “You might want to see [it] for no other reason than because it exists. There will never be another like it,” he said.
After debuting at Toronto back in 2006, the film became very hard to track down on streaming services and director Tarsem recently expressed hope the feature would soon get a revival.
Tarsem Singh, known as Tarsem, is also known for movies such as The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez, The Immortals starring Henry Cavill, Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts and Self/less with Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker is also well known for his music videos, including Rem’s Losing My Religion, which won MTV’s Best Video Award. In 2023, he directed his first feature film in Punjabi, Dear Jassi which won the Platform Award at the Toronto International Film Festival.

According to the movies, there are really only four jobs: assassin; hooker (heart of gold optional); President of the United States of America; and FBI agent who hunts down serial killers and risks safety and sanity in doing so. Everything else can be filled under miscellaneous: doctor, lawyer, cop who has to make a choice, etc.

Writer-director Osgood Perkins is aiming straight at his celebrated father’s status at the top of the most memorable and creepy character in the history of movies. The filmmaker’s dad was the great Anthony Perkins who of course played the unforgettable and nightmarish Norman Bates in Hitchcock’s chilling 1960 classic, Psycho. He also followed it up in the ’80s with Psycho II and Psycho III, the latter he also directed in addition to playing Bates yet again. I can’t think of another movie outside of Frankenstein that has stayed in the public’s consciousness quite this long, certainly in this horror genre.
Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter) seems to be unleashing his own inner demons with his choice of subject matter, and he even has suggested that the dark story behind his parents’ marriage is partly responsible. Anthony Perkins was a closeted gay man, though married to Berry Berensen,...

To kick off July, we’re racing over to Japan to discuss the 35th anniversary of Shinya Tsukamoto‘s Japanese cyberpunk masterpiece, Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989).
In the extreme cinema film, an unnamed salary man (Tomorowo Taguchi) is slowly transformed into metal after a hit and run involving a metal fetishist (Tsukamoto). After accidentally (?) killing first his cat, and then his girlfriend (Kei Fujiwara) – with his new metal drill dick no less – the salary man and the fetishist engage in a destructive battle of wills that only ends when they fuse together. Together at least, the lovers set out to destroy the world.

David Fincher, renowned for his work on films like Fight Club and Seven, brings his dark and gritty storytelling style to Netflix’s new crime thriller, The Killer. Adapted from the French graphic novel by Matz and Luc Jacamon, this film promises to shake up our expectations of the hitman genre. There have been plenty of superhits in the vast expanse of Hollywood that went through comprehensive confusion when it came to casting. Given how cinema is engulfed in the so-called Easter egg culture, it’s tempting to over-read the presence of glam-rock signifiers in Oz Perkins’s Longlegs. T. Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” serves as both its epigraph and closing credits accompaniment. And an album cover of Lou Reed’s Transformer appears prominently above the eponymous menace’s mirror. But glam rock offers less of a skeleton key to the film than a guide on how to watch it.
The flamboyant early-1970s subgenre of rock music, which sought to upend rock’s hegemonic hypermasculinity with androgyny and gender fluidity, was a promise of liberation to its fans. How something begins its life isn’t how it must always present itself. So also goes Longlegs, a sturdily constructed horror film with a foundation sneakily built on shifting sands.

As the Academy prepares to debut an award for casting directors at the 2026 Oscars, the timing was right for Francine Maisler to travel this week to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for a tribute organized by its Industry Days office. Taking the stage for a Kviff Talk with her associate Molly Rose, the renowned casting director admitted she had initially been reluctant to enter the limelight. “Coming here is special for me, because I tend to avoid these things. I’m hired to be behind the camera, not in front.”
Despite such modesty, Maisler had no trouble holding the room for nearly 90 minutes, reflecting not only on her own illustrious career path but praising the legions of actors she has worked with for the last 30-odd years. She seemed especially energized by Lady Gaga, having recently seen a cut of Todd Phillips’ heavily anticipated DC sequel Joker: Folie À Deux,...

Robert Towne, the renowned screenwriter and filmmaker responsible for the scripts of movies like "Chinatown," "Shampoo," and "Mission: Impossible," has died. The Hollywood Reporter shared the news (confirmed by publicist Carri McClure) that the 89-year-old storyteller passed away on Monday in his home.

Alien and Blade Runner both spawned sequels, but filmamker Sir Ridley Scott wasn't behind the camera for them. James Cameron helmed the now-classic Aliens, with David Fincher later taking charge of the poorly-received, yet still fondly remembered, Alien 3.
As for Blade Runner, Dune director Denis Villeneuve took charge of Blade Runner 2049, a movie that proved to be a worthy follow-up to Scott's groundbreaking 1982 original.
Talking to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com) about Gladiator II, Scott confirmed he was never asked to direct sequels to either movie or told about their development while it was happening. He blames that on being a relatively new filmmaker and having little interest in making follow-ups at the time.
"I was slow out the starting gate," Scott admits. "I mean, I should have done the sequels to 'Alien' and to 'Blade Runner.' You change over the years. At that time,...

Robert Towne, the screenwriter who wrote the Academy Award-winning original script for Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, has died at the age of 89. His publicist, Carri Mclure, announced that Towne died at his home in Los Angeles on Monday.
He originally set out to work as an actor and writer and quickly found employment with Roger Corman. He scripted Corman’s Last Woman on Earth and also co-starred in the film under the pseudonym Edward Wain. He also wrote The Tomb of Ligeia for Corman. Towne then earned a reputation as a top script doctor after Warren Beatty asked him to help out on Bonnie and Clyde. He went on to make uncredited contributions to movies such as The Godfather, The Parallax View, Marathon Man, The Missouri Breaks, Heaven Can Wait, Crimson Tide, and more.

Robert Towne, the screenwriter as superstar whose Oscar-winning work on the 1974 classic Chinatown is widely recognized as the gold standard for movie scripts, has died. He was 89.
Towne died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Carri McClure announced.
He also received Academy Award nominations for The Last Detail (1973) and Shampoo (1975) in the years surrounding his most famous work.
His takes on Los Angeles were etched with melancholy and painted the city as one of beauty and sadness. In Chinatown and Shampoo, gumshoe J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) and Beverly Hills hairdresser George Roundy (Warren Beatty) end up alone. (Towne collaborated often with those actors.)
This squinty vantage on Southern California, as a temptress who dashes hopes, also was evident in his script for Tequila Sunrise (1988), which starred Mel Gibson as a retired drug dealer, Kurt Russell as a cop and Michelle Pfeiffer as the femme fatale.

Sir Ridley Scott claims he was "never told or asked" about making sequels to 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner'.The iconic 86-year-old filmmaker insisted he didn't have the "choice" or control to make studios wait for follow-ups to his 1979 and 1982 sci-fi classics, and he "wasn't happy" when the companies decided to make follow-ups without getting him on board. He told Vanity Fair magazine: "I’m the author of two franchises. Most directors in Hollywood — certainly, let’s say, at my level — don’t let that stuff go."But I did ‘Alien’ as my second movie, so I didn’t have much choice. And ‘Blade Runner’ was my third movie. Ridley Scott is finishing up work on Gladiator II – and he’s still not happy about not getting the chance to make Alien and Blade Runner’s first sequels.
It’s not an unfamiliar drum for director Ridley Scott to beat, but he’s been chatting about being cut out of the first raft of sequels to his 1979 classic Alien. Scott made the original, of course, but it was James Cameron who eventually got the nod to direct 1986’s Aliens. For Ridley Scott, he never got the opportunity at the time.
Chatting to Vanity Fair he admits that “I was slow out the starting gate” when it came to directing sequels. Currently putting the finishing touches to this winter’s Gladiator II, Scott argues “I should have done the sequels to Alien and to Blade Runner”. Yet it notes that “at the time, I didn’t want to go through it again.

Acclaimed filmmaker Ridley Scott has recently opened up about his regrets concerning the sequels to two of his most iconic films, “Alien” and “Blade Runner.” In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, the director revealed he wishes he had been at the helm for the follow-ups to these groundbreaking science fiction classics.
Scott, who directed the original “Alien” in 1979 and “Blade Runner” in 1982, explained that as a relatively new director in Hollywood at the time, he had little say in the matter of sequels. “I’m the author of two franchises. Ridley Scott was once attached to direct Blade Runner 2049, but when the time finally came to shoot the sequel, Scott dropped out to focus on Alien: Covenant and Denis Villeneuve was picked to replace him. Looking back, Scott told Vanity Fair that it’s a choice he still regrets.
“I was regretful,” Scott said. “Although [Denis Villeneuve] did a good job.” Although Blade Runner 2049 was praised by critics, it did bomb at the box office, dooming any potential sequel. However, the franchise will soon be revived with Blade Runner 2099, a TV series for Prime Video which Scott is executive producing.
For his part, Villeneuve has said that he has no desire to make a sequel to another director’s work again. “So 2049 was really a love letter to the first film, but it was by far one of the most difficult projects I’ve ever done, and I don...

Directing a sequel to one of his iconic ’80s films was an alien notion to Ridley Scott.
Scott, who is directing the long-awaited “Gladiator II,” told Vanity Fair that he was “never asked” to return to direct any of the “Alien” franchise installments after the first film.

He added, “It was kind of ‘Welcome to Hollywood.'”

From one of the directors of "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" comes ... another "Hellboy" movie reboot! The first trailer for "Hellboy: The Crooked Man" has landed, boasting a screenplay co-written by Mike Mignola, who created the Hellboy character for Dark Horse Comics in 1993.
The big red boy with the sawed-off horns was first brought to the big screen by Ron Perlman in the Guillermo del Toro-directed movies "Hellboy" (2004) and "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" (2008). With his huge plethora of movies and shows, Brad Pitt can easily be considered one of Hollywood’s finest actors. While initially struggling to establish himself as an actor, Pitt is currently among the highest-paid actors in the world of Tinsel Town.
However, with popularity comes several challenges and criticisms. For Pitt, it was the cult classic Fight Club, which garnered a lukewarm reception from the public when it was released in 1999.

10 Most Watched Netflix Series Of All Time(Photo Credit –Instagram)
In the past decade, Netflix has dominated the television landscape, doling out the biggest hits in entertainment. Netflix, which launched as a streaming platform a decade later in 2007, pioneered the streaming era, dishing out a slew of original shows that have enabled the streamer to establish itself as an award-winning content giant.
Netflix’s top 10s enable viewers to see the biggest original hits within the first 91 days of release. The hits are measured by taking the runtime of the show or movie and dividing it by the number of hours watched. While the mechanism is a bit convoluted, that’s all the steamer has for you now. At Least the numbers aren’t cloaked in secrecy like in Apple.
The numbers are recorded from October 2021 to June 2024 after Netflix switched its scale from the number of households who watched within the first 28 days.

When Squid Game absolutely exploded in popularity upon its release in 2021, you may recall rumours that David Fincher was going to be working on a US version of the series. Well, according to The Playlist, not only is the project still in development, but Fincher may have even put the Chinatown prequel series on the back burner to focus on Squid Game.
The report states that Fincher has been “quietly working” on Squid Game for the last two years and has even tapped Dennis Kelly (Utopia) to write the project. The report notes that it’s “unclear” where the Squid Game remake is at, but it could be Fincher’s next directing project, considering how he pivoted away from Chinatown, which has all its episodes written.

Paramount+’s spy thriller The Agency has found its lead agent.
Michael Fassbender will star in the espionage drama (formerly titled The Department), which is based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes and has started production. The two-time Oscar nominee will also serve as an executive producer of the show, which will stream on the platform’s Paramount+ With Showtime tier.
The series from Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios earned a straight-to-series order at Showtime in February 2023, before the premium cable outlet was effectively folded into Paramount+. We have some interesting exclusive context to this story, but let’s get on with the basics first. Way back when in 2019, it was reported that David Fincher and Oscar-winning “Chinatown” screenwriting legend Robert Towne were developing a “Chinatown” prequel series for Netflix, given the filmmaker’s exclusive deal there.
And there’s barely been a word about it since.

Brad Pitt is undoubtedly one of the last true mega-movie stars of the 90s and has been in some of the most memorable films that people love. The actor is also known for his charming personality and his handsome looks. Women in the 90s swooned over Pitt’s irresistible charm and the actor himself dated many actresses in the decade.

One of them was his Se7en co-star Gwyneth Paltrow. The pair started dating during the production of that film. Paltrow was aware of the craze around Pitt among women but she tried to suppress developing any kinds of feelings for him. The actress even admitted to being an idiot for not recognizing Pitt’s flirtations with her.

“The episodes have been written for Netflix,” screenwriter Robert Towne says of his Chinatown prequel series, which will be directed by David Fincher.
As the classic noir thriller Chinatown marked its 50th anniversary – it premiered on the 20th June 1974 – screenwriter Robert Towne recently provided an update on a long-rumoured prequel series.
Its episodes, Towne told Variety, “have been written,” and will explore the earlier years of detective Jake Gittes, played by Jack Nicholson in the original film.
The series was first reported on in 2019, with the story being that David Fincher would direct and that it would all be bankrolled by Netflix. The streaming giant didn’t comment on the reports at the time, but it sounds as though the show has been quietly in the works for the past five years, with Towne confirming that he’s been collaborating with Fincher on the project in the interim.

For a while there, we thought they really did forget it, Jake. But now Chinatown screenwriter Robert Towne has provided an update on the prequel series he has developed alongside David Fincher, confirming that the blinds haven’t been closed on the endeavor after all.
Towne — who won an Oscar for his original screenplay — recently told Variety that all episodes of the planned Chinatown prequel have been written. “All I’m likely to say is yes, all the episodes have been written for Netflix.” On collaborating with Fincher, he added, “Working with a force of nature like David Fincher, tho’ occasionally humbling, is never less than enlightening.”
Expanding the seedy world of noir classic Chinatown has been done before, with Towne and Jack Nicholson reuniting for 1990’s The Two Jakes, which we’ll just say is no Chinatown…But a prequel to the 1974 film exploring the origins of Jake Gittes...

Steven Spielberg is now a legendary filmmaker in the industry, having directed many acclaimed and award-winning films over the years. The filmmaker is arguably the most versatile director who does not limit his films to one genre. He has made dramas, sci-fi films, historical epics, thrillers, action adventures, and big-budget extravaganzas.

In addition to directing, he produced several projects under his production company Amblin Entertainment. The director pulled off the impossible, as he convinced Disney and Warne Bros to license their iconic cartoon characters for 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

With the exception of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (and maybe "The Game"), David Fincher's oeuvre (including his television series "House of Cards" and the dearly missed "Mindhunter") collectively expresses a resoundingly dim view of humankind. He's not cruel about it, nor is he despondent; often, he seems darkly amused by the unfettered manifestation of our worst instincts, and the heights people can reach when they eschew inconvenient virtues like compassion and ethics.
Even when he gets a tad heavy-handed with his messaging, I'm glad a deep thinker and master cinematic craftsman like Fincher is out there exploring our tendency to become our worst selves. He's certainly been swamped with potential inspiration over the last decade, and, given his technical expertise, one subject I'd love to see him tackle is the use of AI as not just as a creative cog, but a full-blown engine. There's an obvious...
