Indie filmmaker Todd Solondz has for over four decades batted off ratings battles, jeers and boos at film festivals, and censorship controversies for his unflinching and scaldingly funny deadpan dioramas of American suburban life.
He’s found comedy in the darkest places and the most messed-up people, whether a father of three (Dylan Baker) who’s also a pedophile in “Happiness,” a middle-school social outcast (Heather Matarazzo) in “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” or a Hispanic housekeeper who poisons her employers with carbon monoxide in “Storytelling.” His 1998 “Happiness” shocked Cannes with its bleak sexuality and cringe characters, compelling even the Sundance Film Festival to refuse to screen it.
The pressure was on after the cult classic — recently burnished in 4K by the Criterion Collection — for Solondz to follow its winning formula. After the follow-up “Storytelling,” he brought to Venice “Palindromes,” a disturbing comedy about a 13-year-old girl desperate to have a baby.

1982’s Diner was the comedy that dared to ask: What if some dudes hung out in a greasy spoon restaurant and just talked about stuff?
The movie starred Steve Guttenberg, Mickey Rourke, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, Ellen Barkin and Paul Reiser, just to name a few. It followed a group of friends in the late ‘50s who routinely meet at the local diner to chat about the music, sex and the minutiae of their day-to-day lives.
While that concept may not sound all that novel today, at the time, it was so unusual for mainstream entertainment, that some found it tough to grasp. According to writer-director Barry Levinson, during the editing process, a studio executive tried to get him to cut an argument over a roast beef sandwich because it didn’t do anything to “advance the story.”

David Leitch could soon be sailing into the Ocean's franchise waters; the fan-favorite action director is reportedly in early talks to helm Ocean's 14. The upcoming feature will mark the first of the franchise films starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney that Steven Soderbergh will not direct. Clooney will also be involved in Ocean's 14, reprising his role as Danny Ocean and serving as a producer.
It's an exciting development for fans of Leitch's work and the series itself, given his previous work directing mega-action flicks like John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, and Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. That last one was a particularly personal one for the director, given his time working as a stuntman (often with Pitt) before becoming a director. He also directed the raucous Bullet Train, which starred Pitt as the unlucky assassin Ladybug. Pitt, though not officially confirmed, is expected...

Happy Holidays from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we discuss the incomparable Al Pacino with the returning Mitchell Beaupre! Our B-Sides today include Bobby Deerfield, Revolution, Frankie & Johnny, and Danny Collins. We discuss Pacino’s legacy (is he our greatest living actor?), his Oscar win for Scent of a Woman (what a silly plot that movie has!), and his deeply earnest autobiography Sonny Boy.
We dish on what doesn’t work about Bobby Deerfield, what does work about Revolution (hint: it’s the production design), how Michelle Pfeiffer was unfairly criticized for Frankie & Johnny, and why Danny Collins is much better than you think.
Conor asks: Is Adam Sandler the new Pacino? Mitchell asks: Was Pacino’s smallness in Bobby Deerfield and its failure a primary reason...

The TNT drama Animal Kingdom followed the Codys, a criminal family governed by ruthless matriarch Smurf (Ellen Barkin) and comprised of her grandson and four sons. With a specialty in robberies, the Codys were infamous in Oceanside, California, and attracted the attention of law enforcement. To keep the family out of prison, Smurf encouraged the boys to put family above all else. However, her strict code ensured that anyone who threatened them must be dealt with by whatever means necessary.
The Codys' unconventional lifestyle wasn't short on drama and violence. Unfortunately, many of the people who crossed their paths got sucked into that drama and had to pay a price, one way or another. Following Animal Kingdom's conclusion in August 2022, these are nine characters who met tragic fates because of the Codys.

Poker Face is prepping for a big return in 2025, so here's a quick reminder of how this quirky Peacock mystery series unfolded in season 1.
Created by Riann Johnson, Poker Face is basically a love letter to the TV mystery movies of the 1970s. The pilot introduced us to Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a Vegas card shark with a sardonic attitude. She's enlisted by Sterling Frost Jr (Adrian Brody), son of a powerful mobster and casino boss who wants to use Charlie in a classic setup of being a "ringer" for a rich guy and bilk him in a card game.
Charlie, you see, has a unique talent. For reasons she can't explain, she's a living lie detector. Somehow, some way, she always knows when someone is lying and will call them on it. That's a boon for a card player and why she was banned from playing before Sterling Jr.

Editor’s Note: The following story contains major spoilers for the series finale of “Disclaimer.”
Like great opera, “Disclaimer” reaches a shattering — and unashamedly emotionally overwrought, and series-overturning — conclusion in its final seventh hour. And that’s even well before Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett), hyped up on a pitcher of homemade cold brew downed at a junkie’s pace to dilute the tranquilizers Stephen (Kevin Kline) put in her tea, falls to her knees in a hospital at the notion that Stephen may have just killed her son (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
We learn in Episode 7 that the tell-all book dropped on Catherine’s doorstep in the premiere was indeed an elaborate fiction written by Jonathan’s (Louis Partridge) mother (Lesley Manville). That that summer two decades ago in Italy wasn’t a seduction on the young Catherine’s (Leila George) part but instead a stalking that ended in her brutal rape...

Some science fiction movies feature deep, complex characters and multilayered stories that manage to provide a gripping commentary on society while also exploring the concealed realities of human nature. Others don't; nor do they try to. While there were plenty of great sci-fi films in 2024, those of the 1980s were an absolute blast for the audience, regardless of the seriousness (or lack thereof) of their plots. While some 1980s sci-fi movies didn't age well, others did. What these films lack in nuance, they make up for in awesome fight scenes, lovable characters, and out-of-this-world settings.
Nowadays, much of the science fiction cinema world is dominated by big-budget franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Dune series. While these franchises are certainly beloved by many, they do draw attention away from more unique sci-fi films. Eras like the 1980s, however, feature tons of outlandish sci-fi movies made without any thoughts of future sequels in mind.

A rep for Madison Square Garden has responded to criticism following a rally held at the New York arena on Sunday night by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, where several racist insults were made.
An Msg Entertainment spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday: “As a business we are neutral in political matters. We rent to either side. We don’t censor artists, performers or speakers.”
The event has been criticized in part for lewd and racist comments made by stand-up comedian Tony Hinchcliffe about Latinos, Jews and Black people, all of whom are key constituencies in the election, which is just a little over a week away.
“I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico,” Hinchcliffe said during the rally.

TNT's crime drama Animal Kingdom was based on the acclaimed Australian film of the same name. While vastly different in character development and tone, both share the same premise: High schooler J moves in with his estranged grandmother, Smurf, and her criminal sons. The series' pilot follows much of the film's story, with some scenes and dialogue replicated beat for beat. With the show spawning six seasons, it quickly veered off from the movie's story into something entirely its own. Still, the source material was the main inspiration until Animal Kingdom's ending in 2022.
For example, the death of Scott Speedman's Baz was meant to emulate his film counterpart's demise. The same can be said for Nicky (Molly June Gordon), whose brief exploration of heroin nodded to the film Nicky's deadly encounter with the drug. As such, it's not entirely surprising that both Pope (Shawn Hatosy) and Craig...

Just a few years before Robert De Niro teamed up with Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, he starred in another biopic that has found major success on Netflix. Hands of Stone, which De Niro stars in alongside Edgar Ramrez and pop-singing sensation Usher, has fought its way into the top 10 movies chart on Netflix, currently sitting in the #10 spot. The film tells the story of the legendary Roberto Duran (Ramrez) and his equally legendary trainer Ray Arcel (De Niro), who change each other's lives. In addition to De Niro, Ramrez, and Usher, Hands of Stone also stars Ana de Armas, John Turturro, and Ellen Barkin, and the film currently sits at a 45% score from critics and a 52% rating from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Barkin first appeared in a professional role in an uncredited performance in Up in Smoke (1978). It wasn't until her next role, as Beth Schreiber in the 1983 Diner, that fans, critics, and filmmakers began to take notice. Barkin's career is filled with notable performances in movies and television, and there are few years when she isn't in something.
She appeared alongside Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, played one of Steven Soderbergh's best female characters in Ocean's 13, and starred in the TV adaptation of Animal Kingdom. Barkin is one of the most powerful characters in Animal Kingdom as the fearsome Smurf, bringing all the gravitas, danger, and charm she has to the role. She...

The recently released film adaption of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “It End with Us” was a lot of things and has certainly gotten a lot of people talking. It’s unfortunate, however, that the most important subjects at its center — that of domestic violence and emotional abuse — have not been top-of-mind for most conversations regarding the film, but rather alleged personal riffs between star Blake Lively and director/co-star Justin Baldoni. When domestic violence and abuse have been discussed in reference to the film, it has typically been with criticism over how the film and its rollout have avoided more thoughtfully grappling with these themes, rarely reaching for a narrative that goes any deeper than a casual beach read.
In speaking on adapting Hoover’s novel for the screen in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Baldoni acknowledged his interest in focusing on how Lively’s character, Lily Bloom, overcomes her circumstances,...

A sequel to 2007's Ocean's Thirteen may be on its way, as George Clooney has confirmed the existence of a script for another installment. The 2007 ensemble comedy, which followed 2001's Ocean's 11 and 2004's Ocean's 12, included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garca, Don Cheadle, Ellen Barkin, the late Bernie Mac, Al Pacino, and Casey Affleck. Now, two of those stars are sharing what they know about a possible return to the Ocean's franchise.
During a recent conversation with Screen Rant while promoting Apple TV+'s The Instigators, Damon and Affleck, who portrayed Linus Caldwell and Virgil Malloy, respectively, in the heist comedies, revealed they weren't in the loop regarding the future of the Ocean's franchise. After Affleck joked that "you know more than I do," Damon added:
"Yeah. [Laughs] I guess it'll be up to if we can get the whole group together and get a good script.

Without hyperbole, Michael Patrick Jann ("The State") and Lona Williams' ("Sugar & Spice") mockumentary comedy film about a small-town Minnesota beauty pageant is my favorite comedy film, ever. As a former teenage Midwest beauty queen myself, "Drop Dead Gorgeous" speaks to me on a religious level. My blood is not red, it is Mount Rose, and I am an American Teen Princess Pageant girl for life. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" turns 25 this year — one of the many teen girl masterpieces released in 1999 — but is still criminally underseen due to the film's poor box office performance at the time of release and subsequent years of physical releases being out of print. It's a shame because the cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin, Allison Janney, Kirstie Alley, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, Amy Adams (her debut role!), Alexandra Holden, Nora Dunn, Mo Gaffney, Will Sasso, Matt Malloy, Mike McShane, Mindy Sterling, Sam McMurray, and...

Despite a star-studded cast, This Boy's Life only earned $4 million at the box office upon release in 1993. The family drama film failed to stand out among others in the genre, leading to its relative obscurity today. The movie served as an early launching pad for several rising stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and more.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are among the most iconic actors working today. While both have appeared in their share of critically acclaimed titles, they've also collaborated a handful of times, most notably with Martin Scorsese. With prominent supporting roles in classics like “A League of Their Own” and “Dick Tracy,” as well as the lead in the screen adaptation of the musical “Evita,” Madonna’s film career is well-established, but might never have happened without her star turn in the 1985 cult comedy “Desperately Seeking Susan.” A modern farce set in the scuzzy beauty of ‘80s New York City, the film follows a straight-laced housewife and a bohemian drifter who become intertwined in a criminal plot involving a pair of stolen earrings. While the film is led by actress Roseanna Arquette, it quickly became known as the “Madonna movie,” with her character’s fashion sense — which mirrored Madonna’s own — and her free-spirit energy coming to define the popular culture of the era.

One year after “Everything Everywhere All at Once” became the third film to ever merit three acting Oscars, the recipients of those trophies all have their sights set on Emmy glory. As candidates in three separate 2024 races, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan are headed for an exciting reunion that could very well lead to one or more of them winning the TV academy’s favor in September.

Baz's death in Season 3 of Animal Kingdom shocked fans due to the mystery surrounding his killer. Baz's character started as a favorite but turned villainous due to selfish actions, leading to his demise. The mystery of Baz's murderer was finally revealed in Season 3, showing Smurf's role in ordering the hit through Mia.

Cinematic powerhouse actor Robert De Niro has given us some truly memorable performances for the ages, going all the way back to the 70s starting with Martin Scorsese’s’ Mean Streets. And let’s be honest, the guy clearly understands bat-shit crazy. Mr. DeNiro has some insane range, especially in the nutjob department. We’re talking great films such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, The Untouchables, Mean Streets, and This Boy’s Life. But there is one film particularly overlooked in his filmography. A film that creeps along the uncharted path of unseen territory to most. All affirmed their guilty verdicts.
“The Republican candidate for president is a convicted felon,” wrote Stephen King.

Peacock's comedy crime drama Poker Face applies a fresh twist on the whodunit trope while also reviving the traditional murder-of-the-week concept from TV's past. The series follows Charlie (Natasha Lyonne), a casino worker who can instantly tell whenever anyone is lying. After the events of the first episode, Charlie is sent on the run; each week, she finds herself working a different job and getting tangled up in a different murder mystery.
Created by Rian Johnson, Poker Face feels like a continuation of his quest to shake up the mystery genre after his success in writing and directing Knives Out and Glass Onion. The show subverts the whodunit trope by dedicating the first part of each episode to depicting that week's murder, with most of the tension coming from how exactly Charlie will unravel the mystery.

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...
