The fall festival season is wrapping up! Each year, dozens of movies premiere at festivals with distributors looking to launch them before they’re released in theaters or on streaming services. But dozens more are independent films without distribution came to the festivals looking to be discovered and acquired for release. This year, over 200 movies made their world premieres across the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Telluride Film Festival, and we’ve seen some big name movie sales across all three. Up next is New York Film Festival, which also has some juicy premieres.
Right as Venice got underway, we saw U.S. deals for two of the biggest competition titles on the slate, Pablo Larraín’s “Maria” to Netflix and Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” to A24. A24 also picked up the rights to Venice Silver Lion winner “The Brutalist” in a competitive situation. And...

Ask most older people about their age and most will say that no matter how they look on the outside, or even if they are physically slowing up, that they still feel in their 20s at heart.
That’s how it is for Shelley (Pamela Anderson). After three decades working as a showgirl in Le Razzle Dazzle on the Vegas strip. Saturday Night Live has delivered a few meta twists to the ends of sketches over the years, such as when Norm Macdonald played a violent, jealous Tommy Lee opposite Pamela Anderson, only to get beaten up by the real violent, jealous Tommy Lee.
Then there was the Trump-era game show “What Even Matters Anymore,” which ends with Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong breaking character to make sure that host Jessica Chastain is doing okay.
But SNL’s most bizarrely random meta twist came at the end of a sketch hardly anybody even remembers.
A 2006 Dane Cook-hosted episode found Cook and Will Forte playing Poland Spring water bottle delivery men, who have, for some reason, drunk their entire supply. When they get a visit from a suspicious Poland Spring executive, played by Kristen Wiig, the two dudes try to hide the incriminating empty jugs before she can come in. Cook...

Iconic Canadian actress Pamela Anderson will be honored at the 20th Zurich Film Festival (Zff) with the festival’s Golden Eye award in honor of her “versatile career.” Anderson will present her latest feature, Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, at the 2024 Zurich Festival and will receive her award on Oct.4.
In The Last Showgirl, which premiered in Toronto, Anderson plays Shelley, a 50-year-old showgirl facing the end of her long-running Las Vegas show. THR‘s review praised her performance, done “with an undiluted sense of heartbreak”
“She completely immersed herself in her character, turned Shelley’s inner life inside out with her facial expressions and made sure that we sympathized with her,” said Zff Artistic Director Christian Jungen, who called Anderson’s turn in the film “a terrific performance, perhaps the best of her career, which deserves an Oscar nomination.”

When Mejuri’s Jacob Jordan met filmmaker Gia Coppola and the team at creative production firm The Directors Bureau, the vibes were, as the kids say, pretty immaculate.
“We immediately felt a strong creative and personal connection,” the fine jewelry company’s chief brand officer tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It felt like I was sitting down with a group of old friends. We were intuitively aligned on pushing the limits of marketing, storytelling and the conventional idea of a ‘campaign.'”
The spark of that meeting has produced a new endeavor for Mejuri with the launch of A New York Minute, a series of new “microfilms” that reimagine the Mejuri story as episodic content with Coppola at the helm directing a group of young female friends with jewelry pieces as supporting players. The collaboration is also part of a recent wave of creativity from fashion brands like Gucci and Saint Laurent...

The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.
Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? We’ve got you covered, as we run through some of our favorite reviews, stories, and interviews from this year’s TIFF.

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival has finally wrapped up, closing out a two-week frenzy of world premieres and screenings of highly anticipated offerings making their way across the international festival circuit. For many, TIFF (as well as the Venice and Telluride film festivals) marks the unofficial commencement of awards season, meaning the films that receive the People’s Choice Awards typically earn an early boost for their campaigns. Last year, the top prize went to Cord Jefferson’s publishing industry satire “American Fiction,” which would later earn the writer/director an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as a nomination for Best Picture. This year’s winner was Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation “The Life of Chuck,” starring Tom Hiddleston.
12 of the last 14 People’s Choice Award winners at TIFF went on to receive Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and four of them actually won the award.

Brenda Song may have made a name for herself on the Disney Channel in the early 2000s. But the actress has since moved on from her role as London Tipton in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. However, as is common with child stars, transitioning into adult roles proved to be rather challenging. The 36-year-old’s re-entry into Hollywood came at a surprising juncture in her life, with the influence of an unexpected individual playing a crucial role—Gia Coppola.

Pamela Anderson takes center stage in Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl, a moving drama about aging and identity set in the glittering world of Las Vegas showgirls. Coppola directs from a script by Kate Gersten, telling the story of Shelley, a dancer approaching her fourth decade performing in the long-running Le Razzle Dazzle revue.
At the show’s world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, it was clear this role offered Anderson her most powerful onscreen opportunity to date. Playing a woman coming to terms with losing the career defining her entire adult life, Shelley confronts feelings of uselessness and obsolescence with enormous emotional vulnerability.
Supported by a standout cast including Jamie Lee Curtis and Dave Bautista, the film explores profound themes of femininity, passion, and purpose through the lens of these showgirls dedicating their art to Vegas nightlife. With Coppola at the helm and Gersten’s attentive screenplay,...

Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl is a dreamy, melancholy portrait of a veteran Las Vegas dancer reeling from the news that her career has hit its expiration date. The movie is as gossamer-thin as the wings that the title character, Shelly — played by Pamela Anderson with an undiluted sense of heartbreak — keeps tearing on her stage costume. The story more often drifts than advances, favoring ambience over substance in a few too many wordless sequences observing Shelly wandering or dancing or just staring into the abyss in sun-blasted parking lots, on rooftops and streets, bathed in lens flare and the shimmering score of Andrew Wyatt.
After her promising 2013 feature debut Palo Alto and her sophomore stumble seven years later with Mainstream, Coppola seems more in thrall than ever to the impressionistic style of Aunt Sofia. But the new film — written by Kate Gersten, a Coppola clan member by marriage...

Despite working in Hollywood for decades, Pamela Anderson never was offered a meaty role like “The Last Showgirl” protagonist Shelley, a struggling dancer about to lose the only job she’s ever known due to age and shifting tastes among the Las Vegas tourist set.
“I underestimated myself too,” Anderson said during an interview at the Variety Toronto Film Festival Studio. “And it just came at the right time. Everything just came at the right time.”
The right time for Anderson was a career-changing 2023 that saw her sex symbol public persona morph into something more multidimensional thanks to Ryan White’s 2023 Emmy-nominated documentary “Pamela, A Love Story” and her best-selling memoir “Love Pamela.”
“The stars have really aligned,” Anderson added. “And now it just it also feels very surreal, like I’m going to wake up and this isn’t really happening, and then I’ll be really pissed because...

“I’m older––I’m not old,” says Shelley, the longest-term performer in a past-its-prime Las Vegas revue. She is played by Pamela Anderson, the international icon who has never, ever had a role like this. Shelley is 57 years old, living paycheck-to-paycheck, estranged from her daughter, and intensely vulnerable. Clearly we are far from the beaches of Baywatch and action spectacle that was Barb Wire. And Anderson is one of the chief reasons Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl is a noteworthy film. But this is not stunt casting. It’s a real-deal performance, and Shelley is one of the more memorable Vegas denizens in recent cinema.
Shelley’s Las Vegas is the Vegas of shattered dreams and empty pockets––stripped of artifice and bathed in harsh sunlight. Coppola, whose earlier efforts Palo Alto and Mainstream showed great promise, and screenwriter Kate Gersten have a keen understanding of the behind-the-scenes world of the city.

Toronto film festival: an empty-headed attempt to give the star her version of The Wrestler is a regrettable misfire
The desire to see Pamela Anderson receive her flowers after being mistreated and denigrated by numerous parties – from the media to men in the industry to most recently Hulu – is strong enough to initially outweigh other concerns over her big-screen comeback. Even framing it as such feels like an understatement, the star having never received anything like the dramatic lead she’s been given in Vegas-set character drama The Last Showgirl. It’s a genuinely huge moment for Anderson after regaining control of her narrative with a well-received turn in Chicago on Broadway and a likable Netflix documentary which allowed her to right some wrongs.
But while goodwill might have propelled her here, to a ritzy Toronto film festival premiere, it can only take her so far. The film, directed by...

Let’s see if those famously kind Canadian audiences can convince Hollywood studios and streamers to bring the indies of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival back with them through customs.
As always, a promising crop of star-studded films are headed to TIFF in search of distribution. Some have tantalized audiences in Venice or Telluride, some showed only brief glimpses of their wares to early suitors in Cannes, and some are on the ground over the next week to make splashy debuts just in time for awards consideration.
“We’re still feeling the hangover of the past few years. The lingering impact of Covid, and of course the strikes,” said Jessamine Burgum, who runs the indie production shop Pinky Promise with partner Kara Durrett. The pair are in town with one of the most buzzed-about projects of the year, “The Last Showgirl” starring Pamela Anderson in a tale of redemption and sequined headdresses.

“What are you, bored? This is breasts, and rhinestones, and joy!”
One of the last great films to depict the infamous Las Vegas strip’s seediness and its toll on its inhabitants was “Leaving Las Vegas.” Nicholas Cage won an Academy Award for portraying an alcoholic determined to drink his life away in a filthy and nuanced performance. The film’s success revolved around Cage and screen partner Elisabeth Shue’s willingness to throw everything they had into an indie drama full of deceit and darkness.
Pamela Anderson would now like Cage and Shue to hold her beer … or more realistically, her wings.
Director Gia Coppola takes a modern audience into the dazzling world of Las Vegas revues and showgirls in the aptly titled “The Last Showgirl.” Anderson stars as Shelley, an aging performer who reveres The Razzle Dazzle, a seemingly ancient remnant of Las Vegas’s golden past. Equipped...
