- A printing studio in Paris, France, document the lithographic process.
- David Lynch's visit to Norway.
- Lena returns to her rural home-town to find her past personified in the form of Swan, a young girl with an abusive father. Through the loving bond they develop, Lena and Swan rediscover their strength, face their abuses both past and present, and save each-other. A crazy old lady on a glittered bicycle, a town haunted by an approaching tornado, a boy named Forest - Lena's ex-true love, and a herd of friendly cows all figure in this Lynchian story about resilience, compassion and the healing power of love. Lena is a successful graphic designer in the city, aggressively ignoring her past. Returning home on the occasion of her estranged father's death, she stumbles upon Swan playing alone in a corn-field with a storm approaching. Lena follows Swan to the little girl's home, where she discovers that Swan's father, Angus, is a drunken lout who has locked his daughter out while he drinks himself into a stupor. Swan's only friends in her isolated world are the herd of cows Angus keeps. While she shows them to Lena, the two form a spiritual bond. Later, as Lena and Forest reconnect, Lena can feel Swan's pain as the little girl is again locked outside as the storm continues to build. Ignoring her duty to settle her father's estate, Lena can think of nothing but how to help Swan. Everything comes to a head when Angus decides to slaughter his herd of cows and Lena, Forest and Swan team up to save the cattle. Under the cover of the storm, they sneak onto Angus's land and open the gates. The cattle's release, cathartic and triumphant, brings them all together, and lets Lena at least discover how Swan is a figment of her memory, and that all this time, she's been saving herself. This is a story about courage, about facing your fears and troubles, about compassion, self-discovery, love and the freedom born of self-knowledge. Shot on location in Fairfield Iowa and expressed without compromise on an ultra-low budget, Lena's mystical, dreamlike tableau is lovingly crafted by a master of symbolism, and it's statements about human resilience are stirring, and unforgettable.
