The Greek pirate who turned businessman, Ioannis Varvakis, made his fortune selling caviar in Russia and all over the world. Varvakis strives all his life for freedom for himself and then for his country.

An intelligent middle-aged couple (lecturer Varzumov and philologist Lera) live in a one-room apartment in a provincial town. Their routine existence is boring and monotonous. Their cheerless life is overturned by an extraordinary event when their cramped flat is occupied by a group of special service policemen who are waiting for the terrorist from the flat opposite. The plot of the film is based on the story of the boy Romka Begunkov with a difficult character, who lacks faith in people, love and friendship. Only one true friend - a small dog named Plut, lives with Roma in the foster family of the Ryakhins. The unbearably difficult and sometimes very cruel life in this house forces Roma to go to the extreme, to run away, saving his life and the life of the faithful dog Plut. Having escaped from the "home", Roma accidentally ends up in a military unit, in the midst of military exercises. Army everyday life and a strict daily routine turned out to be a difficult test for Romka. Acquaintance, and subsequently friendship with the daughter of the regiment commander, Sveta, awakens in the boy, feelings unfamiliar to him.
