A luxury liner departs America for the shores of Europe, which is in the throes of war. The passengers, of different nationalities, include wealthy businessmen, actresses, stalwart silk boys, artists, ordinary teachers and secret agents of countries preparing for war. At the beginning of the voyage, the captain cuts the ship off from the outside world.

Dr. Gábor Benedek, the famous lawyer, defends a murderer who killed his wife out of jealousy. Gábor's marriage is fine, he loves his wife Anna. Then, one day, Péter Szentgyörgyi, her former love turns up in the small town. Anna once wanted to be a pianist like Péter, but then she married and gave up the career. The reappearance of her old love awakens her longing for a different kind of life.

The plot has Erszebet Simor falling in love with Gabor Rajnay, who has a wife in Paris, but he has told everybody she is dead. Erszebet, via a little scheming and a direct appeal to the not-dead wife, gets Rajnay a divorce so she can marry him. The not-dead wife probably figured that as good riddance.

When Lajos Molnár loses his job and his love his friends tell him that a recently deceased Argentinian relative left millions to him.
