WALKERSVILLE — The Walkersville boys track team won the meet it hosts Saturday, taking the Talley Zimmerman Invitational with a team score of 166.
Mountain Ridge was second with 145, while Linganore was eighth with 29 and St. John’s Catholic Prep was ninth with 25.
In the girls meet, Smithsburg cruised to the team title with 186.5 points, almost 100 more than second-place Mountain Ridge (90.5). St. John’s Catholic Prep was seventh in the girls meet with 46, while Linganore was ninth with 28.
For the Walkersville boys, Mason Worley won the 110-meter (15.99 seconds) and 300-meter (40.14) hurdles and ran legs for the Lions’ winning 4x100 (43.75) and 4x200 (1:32.83) relays. Jaden Sasu won the high jump (6-feet) and the triple jump (43 feet, 5 1/2 inches), Aidan Simmons won the 100-meter dash (10.76 seconds) and 200 dash (22.09) and was on the winning relay teams, Kenyon Johnson won the shot put (45 feet, 10 1/2 inches) and Patrick Word won the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches) for the Lions.
The other champions from Frederick County were in the girls meet. Makayla Ferrell won the 100-meter hurdles (17.22 seconds) and the pole vault (10 feet), and Lily Bandy took the 400-meter dash (58.85 seconds) for St. John’s Catholic Prep, while Walkersville’s Kailey Nicholas won the triple jump (33 feet, 10 1/2 inches).
College Softball
Saint Peter’s 13, Mount St. Mary’s 8
EMMITSBURG — Senior Tori Bowles matched a school record with three home runs, but Mount St. Mary’s dropped a high-scoring affair to Saint Peter’s in the rubber game of the three-game series. Bowles finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with a double, three home runs, 14 total bases and six RBI.
She is the third player in Mount history to hit three home runs in a game, joining Rachel Heinze (against UMBC on May 3, 2017) and Liz Christiansen (against Central Connecticut State on March 28, 2010).
Bowles leads the Mountaineers with seven doubles, eight home runs and 27 RBI this season.
College Baseball
Fairfield 8, Mount St. Mary’s 3
The Stags jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Efrain Correa Jr. had an RBI double for the Mountaineers in the seventh.
FCC splits doubleheader
Frederick Community College dropped the first game of a doubleheader with Montgomery College 4-2 before winning the nightcap 10-2 on Saturday.
JJ Taylor, Dillon Jennings, and Josh Erd each had two hits for the Cougars in game one, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
In the second game, Christian Cabina hit two home runs with five RBIs to help FCC get back on the winning track.
The Cougars improved to 36-5 and 17-1 in Region 20.
Women’s Lacrosse
Mount St. Mary’s 19, Marist 9
The Mountaineers closed the regular season at 5-4 and will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament.
Mackenzi Furlong had four goals and two assists to lead the Mountaineers, while Madison Harmening also finished with four goals.
Men’s Lacrosse
Siena 14, Mount St. Mary’s 7
Cormac Giblin tallied a hat trick for the in the season finale for the Mountaineers.
