Watch: Unsettling 'Holiday House' Short Film Feat. AnnaSophia Robb
"Wow you're home is super nice." It might be a good idea to never meet your fans. It can be super awkward if you ever meet them – maybe even dangerous. Yet another eerie new film about parasocial relationships. Holiday House is a short film created by Alex Heller, who also directed & starred in the indie film The Year Between a few years ago. Heller describes it as "mysterious, miniature movie." A content creator feels obligated to let her internet benefactor visit her workshop. His arrival explores uncomfortable boundaries of a parasocial friendship. Starring AnnaSophia Robb as Shelley & David Brown as Marky, with Antonio Marziale & Adrienne Becker. It is very similar to the other short called Followers about a similar home invasion. I also always reference Ingrid Goes West as the original film about parasocial relationships, where people create extremely unhealthy connections to folks they only know on social media. Freaky! View below.

Watch: Orson Welles' 'Freedom River' Animated Short About America
"So long as this stream flows strong and clear, our people will be filled with life and hope... But if these waters cease to flow or lose their clarity, our lands will decay and die." Indeed - the story of America and where we are today. This fascinating animated short film called Freedom River is originally from 1971. A full 53 years later (!!) and everything it talks about is happening right now - the river of freedom is murky & poisonous, and most Americans don't seem to get it... Freedom River is a "parable told by Orson Welles." The maestro lent his voice to this project after the producers convinced him by sending a script & recorder in the mail to him in Paris. It's a parable about America – obviously this "river of freedom" is referring to the USA – and how xenophobia, racism, and greed will cause that river to become tainted and toxic. "They could not see it. For their pride made them blind." Kind of amazing how accurately this film predicts what is happening to America right now, and how relevant it is even 50+ years later. Another reminder America is far from the prosperous nation it once was but there's still hope in cleaning the river sometime soon. Enjoy.

Watch: 'The Big Wait' Short Doc - About a Remote Airport in Australia
"Here is a place that I think one can find hope." Take a journey to the other side of the world, to a remote place in the middle of a dusty plain. Now online to watch after playing at festivals all of 2024. In a remote desert town in Australia, population two, a couple manages an emergency airport and keeps vacant cottages in pristine condition, waiting for any visitors who never seem to arrive. The airport is meant for emergencies and other stopovers, and a few planes have actually used it. Director Yannick Jamey explains why he made this film: "I was interested in exploring the definition of sanity and the delicate balance between freedom and madness through this microcosm of Western society reduced to one street, six houses and two people surrounded by pure void." 🇦🇺

Inspirational Music Doc 'The Only Girl in the Orchestra' Teaser Trailer
"Orin is one of the boys." Netflix has revealed a quick clip trailer for a documentary film called The Only Girl in the Orchestra, made by filmmaker Molly O'Brien. This 34-minute short film originally premiered at the 2023 DOC NYC Film Festival last year. It's getting a global release on Netflix starting in December. Trailblazing double bassist Orin O'Brien was never one to seek the spotlight, but when Leonard Bernstein hired her in 1966 as the first female musician in the New York Philharmonic, she inevitably became the focus of media attention and, ultimately, one of the most renowned musicians of a generation. Remarkable. Somehow this story didn't make it into Bradley Cooper's Maestro film about Leonard Bernstein though it should've been in there. It's also shocking / amazing that even in 1966 there was not a single woman in the entire NY Philharmonic orchestra aside from her. Glad it's not like this anymore, and glad she made history.

Watch: 'Over the Garden Wall' 10th Anniversary Stop Motion Tribute
"Perhaps were all just playthings in the hands of fate... Alone, cast adrift..." Cartoon Network has debuted a fantastic 3-minute stop motion animated short film tribute to the cult classic animated series Over the Garden Wall. This original series debuted in 2014 and ran only 10 episodes for one season. It has since become a fan favorite and while they haven't ever continued with more episodes, they do recognize the love for it anyway and made this short to honor the fans. And let them know they appreciate their love. Created and animated by the legendary Aardman Animations in the UK (known for Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep) this 3-minute short features Wirt, Greg and Beatrice reminiscing about the good ol' days. They got the original three voice actors back for this: Elijah Wood as Wirt, Melanie Lynskey as Beatrice, and Collin Dean as Greg, plus Frank Fairfield as the narrator. All of the little details in the forest are gorgeous, and even though it's barely 3 minutes, this is pretty much as wonderful as any short can be. Enjoy.

Watch: '109 Below' Short Doc - About a Harrowing Mountain Rescue
"The true cost of search and rescue." The outdoor clothing brand Arc'teryx presents this incredible short documentary film called 109 Below, telling the story of a harrowing rescue in the early 80s. The 14-minute short is made by Nick Martini and Stept Studios with remarkable shots and recreations. In 1982, mountain rescue volunteers attempt to locate and retrieve missing hikers lost in a snow storm up on New Hampshire's Mount Washington (see Google Maps) - known as one of the coldest places. The filmmakers add: "We created this film alongside a team of incredible filmmakers who share a profound love for the mountains and the communities that surround them. Two years on, this story continues to resonate deeply with us all." With Joe Lentini, Hugh Herr, Alexa Siegel, Paul Cormier. Watch: Vibrant Animated Music Video for 'Dark Mystery Enigma Bird'
"I am that mystery enigma bird, that resolved itself out from the weird..." Yet another trippy, entrancing animated music video to enjoy as part of our short film collection. This is another fun discovery! Made by an animation filmmaker from Montreal for a band from Montreal called Nap Eyes, this super weird super fun music video is worth a watch. "Dr. Cool", as he calls himself, created this hand-drawn music video for the Nap Eyes' song "Dark Mystery Enigma Bird" off of their new album out this month. It starts out with a group of horses going on a joy ride when the truck they're standing in rolls down a hill and takes them into the mountains and around the hills. As usual with these music videos, all kinds of weird things happen. Dr. Cool jokes in his intro: "I shoulda made it so the horses roll back down the hill in the final scene but at some point you just gotta stop working on the video!" Ahaha love it. I'm always a fan of these kind of super wacky & weird music videos, letting the animation go off the rails anywhere it wants. The music is really cool, too.
