The 81st Venice International Film Festival opened with Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Its Orizzonti sidebar was opened by Feeling Better. Sigourney Weaver and Peter Weir both received honorary Golden Lions. The Golden Lion for best film went to Pedro Almodóvar for The House Next Door.

The festival runs from 28 August to 7 September.
