The 35th National Park “Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park” was born!

On June 25, 2024, Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park is newly designated as the 35th national park in Japan.

■ Overview
The designation of the Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi and the decision on the park plan, which were submitted by the Central Environmental Council on May 23, 2024, have been announced in the official gazette as follows.

The Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park is located in south-central Hokkaido. With this announcement, the entire area of the Hidaka Mountains, including Mount Apoi, Lake Toyoni, Cape Erimo, and the surrounding sea area, is newly designated as a national park. This is the 35th national park that has been designated, following the Amamigunto National Park (Kagoshima Prefecture) in March 2017.

It is the largest national park in the land area of Japan, stretching approximately 140 km from north to south along a mountain range. It runs from the Hidaka Mountains, which embrace glacial landforms, alpine flora, and the largest pristine watershed in Japan, through forested areas at the foot of the mountains, then links to coastal areas that feature sheer sea cliffs and marine terraces. The national park is enough to represent outstanding scenery of Japan, in terms of the magnificence of the Hidaka Mountains extending from the inland to the sea and their existence remaining in a pristine natural state.

Please visit the Hidakasanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park when you travel to Hokkaido.
