While Krypton hasn't exactly soared for critics, it is popular with fans – who enjoy watching Kal-El's grandfather pitted against fan favourite villains who've seen Terminator / Back To The Future one too many times and have decided to travel into the past in an attempt to stop Superman from existing.

So, for the fans, here's everything you need to know about Krypton's second season.

Be warned, season one spoilers follow.

Krypton season 2 renewal: Is it coming back?

Good news, Seg-El shippers, Superman's grandad will definitely be swooping back onto telly screens later this year – the show had an early renewal. The first season hadn't even finished airing before US cable channel Syfy confirmed they wanted more from Krypton.

But it makes sense, the series has been averaging around 2 million total viewers each week raking as the most-watched debut season on SyFy for the past four years. Not bad for a show led by an old dude (we're kidding, Superman's grandpa is super-hot. He's the one on the right in the above picture).

Well, right now, actually. Syfy have savvily already released a teaser trailer for season two. The short tease sees Superman's 'S' symbol replaced by the emblem of the House of Zod. The trailer includes the words: "The symbol you know is no more."

This points both to the villain who's replaced Brainiac as season two's big bad (Zod), and the show's ambition – to create an alternate reality where Superman has been erased from existence. Zod seems to succeed in this mission at the end of season one, but we'd expect more twists in the tale in season two.

A longer trailer dropped at Comic-Con International in San Diego in July 2018, but featured no new footage, instead serving as a flashy summary of the show's first 10 episodes.

Bookmark this page and we'll update it as soon as any bona-fide footage from season two drops!

Krypton season 2 plot: What will it be about?

The question is, what WON'T it be about? (Superman, obvs.)

Seriously, season one left so many threads hanging you could weave a super-suit from them. Zod's ready to take on the galaxy, Doomsday's on the loose, Adam Strange is trapped in one of Brainiac's bottle cities, which comes complete with a Zod statue – but is it past, present or future?

However, it won't just be about resolving plot points, we'll get new ones too! DC character cameos are going to keep coming in season two. A New Gods reveal (which could include Darkseid) has been teased, which would be insane.

"We're blessed to have the whole DC toy box, more or less, at our disposal," showrunner Cameron Welsh said. "So far, everything that we've wanted, we've been able to get. In fact, we've been given a whole lot more that we wouldn't have dared ask for, so we're lucky."

We've heard the voices of Adam Strange's friends, Sardath and Alanna. And we've been sort-of promised season two appearances from Hawkgirl and Green Lanterns. All of which points to a very cosmic second season, man.

There's also the arrival of a certain bad-ass bounty hunter to contend with...

Krypton season 2 cast: Who'll be in it?

Despite the fact that he ended up in the Phantom Zone with Brainiac (Blake Ritson), we'd expect Cameron Cuffe to come back for the second season. Call us soothsayers when he does. Shaun Sipos (Adam Strange) and Colin Salmon (Zod) will also definitely be back.

So will Nyssa-Vex (Wallis Day), Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell), Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo), Dev-Em (Aaron Pierre), Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham), Kem (Rasmus Hardiker), Val-El (Ian McElhinney) and potentially Daron-Vex (Elliot Cowan) – even though he's technically dead, which doesn't mean much on Krypton.

Emmett Scanlan - who previously dipped his toe into DC waters playing Jim Corrigan on NBC's short-lived Constantine - will also join the cast as iconic DC Comics anti-hero Lobo, who stalks the universe on his motorbike and kills whoever stands in his way.

Krypton season 2 airdate: When will it air?

In the States, we'd expect to see season two in the spring of 2019, with E4 following suit in the UK. (The first season aired five whole months after US transmission, so fingers crossed E4 will up its game a little.)
