Warning: this article contains major spoilers from the latest episode of Krypton.
Superman prequel Krypton introduced a massive twist in this week's episode by unveiling major villain General Zod (Colin Salmon).
The series, which focuses on the Man of Steel's grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), didn't exactly get off to the best start with critics.
However, the show may have been turned on its head with its reveal of classic villain Zod, who has travelled back in time from the original Superman era (rather than being the baby he should be in this timeline).
At the end of episode five 'House of Zod', he reveals himself to mother Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell), and showrunner Cameron Welsh has described it as a "game-changing twist".
It turns out that Zod, rather than Brainiac (Blake Ritson) is trying to alter Krypton's history, but, as Welsh told press (via iO9), "not to destroy Krypton; to save it".
In the second half of the season, Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) will try to convince Seg that history needs to play out and Krypton needs to die in order to get future Superman.
"If you extrapolate that, it means allowing Kandor City to be taken to ensure Superman's birth," Welsh explained.
"A grandson on an alien planet, and you're being asked to let go of the only thing you've ever known, the only home you've ever known?" he added.
"To let all of that go for this abstraction based on this information from Adam, who has already proven to be unreliable, and untrustworthy. Seg is torn."
He added: "What we start to learn about Zod is his idea of protecting Krypton or saving Krypton goes beyond just defeating Brainiac.
"He is thinking more, 'Maybe Krypton becomes the center of an intergalactic empire, maybe this needs a fresh start, new leadership, and maybe look beyond, and start colonizing other planets, build up our defenses, and never let Krypton ever feel threatened again'."
