Superman might be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but not even he can stop an online trailer leak.
Yes, the first preview of the Superman prequel series Krypton turned up on social media on Tuesday (April 18), apparently well ahead of schedule of when US network Syfy was hoping to debut it.
It's all political intrigue, shadowy conspiracy and (duh) the planet of Krypton exploding, as the future Superman's grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) delivers a message for the future.
"Kal-El, my future grandson, your birth world will be a distant memory," he says. "The House of El led a revolution against tyranny. The story of your family isn't how we died but how we lived. I know you will fight to save your world, just as I fought to save mine."
Cameron Cuffe is quite a young man, so it's not at all clear why he's recording a message for his future grandson — who he somehow knows will be named Kal-El — centuries before Krypton actually explodes.
Krypton expands the lore of the Superman franchise by revealing that Superman's grandfather Seg-El had a lurid affair with Lyta Zod, ancestor of his own eventual arch-enemy General Zod.
The comic book adaptation comes from Stargate and Sleepy Hollow's Damian Kindler and David S. Goyer, who contributed to Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and wrote Man of Steel to kick off the DC Extended Universe.
Here's how Syfy is pitching his latest superhero outing: "Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracised.
"This series follows The Man of Steel's grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest superhero ever known."
The Journey begins later this year on Syfy in the US, but first we'll see actual Superman pop up in the unconnected Supergirl TV series.
