Wednesday star Emma Myers has spoken about how filming A Good Girl's Guide to Murder in rural Somerset factors in the upcoming BBC adaptation of a BookTok hit.

Myers has switched up Enid's mermaid-coloured hair to play headstrong teen Pip Fitz-Amobi, who spends her summer investigating the murder of a schoolgirl who went missing five years ago in their small hometown of Little Kilton.

The new six-parter was filmed in the West Country last year, to create the rustic village vibe for the show. Think Hot Fuzz, but with fewer shadowy figures in cloaks.

Myers described Little Kilton as an "everybody knows everybody" sort of town, during an exclusive chat with Digital Spy ahead of the show's release next week. She explained how that backdrop makes the mystery of Andie Bell's disappearance all the more intriguing.

"I think that's an important setting. I think if it was done in a big city, it wouldn't have the same impact as if it was set in a small town.

"It's more of a mystery, because more people are hiding more things than you suspect," said Myers. "Everybody's kind of involved in their own way."

The cast stayed nearby in Bristol while shooting the show, so they weren't completely cut off while filming – not that Myers said she would have minded that.

"I quite like a small town," she added. "I think it's fun. Nice and quiet and peaceful. Not a lot going on. That's kind of my preferred lifestyle, so I had fun."

Myers said she thought it was Pip's "sense of justice" combined with her proximity to the case that resulted in her decision to investigate the murder for her A-Level extended project.

She said: "I think it impacted her when she was younger because she did know these people, they went to her school. She knows the families. So not like its miles away from her.

"I think it starts off as a fun project for her to do because she knows a little bit about it and what happened. It turns into something very personal for her, so I think that's why she gets involved so heavily and can't put it down."

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is available on BBC iPlayer from Monday, July 1.
