Close Counters' 'FLUX' EP was BBC Radio 1Xtra's #1 'EP of the Week' and they shortly after were touted as the stations' 'After Dark Discovery' upon EP release by Jamz Supernova in March 2021. Widespread tastemaker support has continued to roll in with Mixmag, NME, XLR8R, Clash Mag, This Song Is Sick, DUMMY and KALTBLUT Magazine. Radio teams at BBC 6 Music, FLUX FM, Worldwide FM, NTS Radio, Rinse FM, KEXP Seattle and triple j have all sung the praises of Close Counters most well-rounded piece of artistry to date, showcasing their diverse soundscape at the crossroads of house, neo-soul, hip-hop and disco.
Creative prowess seeps through their music and into video clips, artwork and live visuals, with Finn Rees of the band as the driving force behind their new works’ artistic production and direction under his Piewack moniker. Finn’s spill into animation and design has included work for tastemaker labels Mr. Bongo, Nice Guy Records, a slew of Australian artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Sampology, 30/70 plus local festival Groovin’ the Moo; that the duo were set to play in 2020 before the global pandemic. In Australia, MTV and RAGE added the clips for 'SOMETHING IN MY DRINK' and 'SPEAK IN TRUTH' to their playlists, with the latter premiered by UK stalwarts Clash Mag.
With a knack for flow and re-inventing Close Counters have put their unique spin on Bag Raiders' single 'How Long' with Panama which was premiered by Phil Taggart on BBC Radio 1. Their remix of 30/70’s 'Impermanance' earned a debut nod from Sampology on Worldwide FM and Bradley Zero (Rhythm Section) dropped their 'Lazer Tag Flip' of ZFEX's 'Rendezvous' in his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. Their latest take on Young Franco & Denzel Curry's hit 'Fallin' Apart' further displays their versatility as a truly impressive production pair.
Close Counters new wave of live dance music has been featured multiple times on Indie Shuffle, EARMILK, The Sound You Need, Pilerats, Music Feeds, Purple Sneakers, Stoney Roads, and their original works have been widely supported by international radio heads Gilles Peterson, Huey Morgan, Jamz Supernova and key stations Sirius XM, Worldwide FM, Balamii, Reform Radio, Soho Radio, 1BTN, Amazing Radio, Radio FG and local crews at FBi Radio, triple j, triple j unearthed, 3RRR, SYN, 4ZZZ and George FM.
After a move across the Bass Straight a few short years ago from Hobart, the duo had expanded and enlisted a full 7-piece setup with live-percussion, woodwind and stringed instruments joining the tour-de-force on stage which features dancers from their greater collective. Their most recent East Coast headline tour of Australia saw the team continue to sell out shows with an impressive 1,100 tickets across two shows at Melbourne’s infamous The Night Cat after gracing the Meredith Music Festival stage at midnight following Liam Gallagher on the billing to which the amphitheater was left heaving and punters enthralled.
In a relatively short spanning career, Close Counters have swept crowds supporting Sofi Tukker, Confidence Man, Roland Tings, Motez, Tall Black Guy (USA), showcasing to industry at BIGSOUND, EMC, Melbourne Music Week and ticked off bucket-list festivals Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, Strawberry Fields, MONA FOMA, Party in the Paddock, all the while collecting millions of streams and cementing their status as one of Australia’s hottest house and soul exports.
