'From CNN I'm Ifeoma Dike with the five things you need to know for Thursday, June 27th. The stage is set for tonight's CNN debate between President Joe Biden and his Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump. The historic face off takes place at 9 p.m. Eastern in Atlanta, and marks the first in-person showdown of the 2024 election cycle. The latest update to the CNN poll of poll shows a tight race with no clear leader heading into the debate. Here's CNN's David Rind.

Ifeoma, both Biden and Trump have touched down here in Atlanta. I'm on the floor of the spin room directly across the street from the CNN debate studio. Just to underscore how historic this night will be, we have never seen a current U.S. president debate the former one, let alone a former one convicted of felony crimes. The podiums will be eight feet apart. Pretty close, but we'll see if the two even shake hands. The theatrics aside, though, tonight will be a chance for both men to sell their vision for the country to millions of voters who may be tuning in to election coverage for the first time this year.

'Some U.S. cell phone customers traveling internationally are having trouble making calls or sending texts because of a massive roaming outage. AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon confirmed to CNN that their customers are dealing with intermittent issues. Verizon said about 30% of its customers calls and data connections from overseas aren't going through. A company that manages international roaming connections for different cell phone carriers says it's trying to resolve the outage.

'Hundreds of Palestinians evacuated from a neighborhood in eastern Gaza City Thursday after the Israeli military ordered them to leave the area. Residents of the Sanjaya neighborhood told CNN that the bombardment started overnight, making it difficult for them to flee. The military urged residents living in several areas to evacuate south, using the Salah al-Din axis, a road connecting northern and southern Gaza. In a statement posted on X, the Israeli military said it would, quote, act forcefully against terrorist organizations in your areas. The New York Times reports that a major Hamas battalion was located in Judea, but it's unclear if the militant group still has a major presence there. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for comments on the strikes.

The Justice Department this week announced a sweeping series of charges against nearly 200 people accused of participating in health care fraud schemes. False claims from the schemes topped $2.7 billion. The DOJ says more than 190 defendants, including 76 doctors, nurse practitioners and other licensed medical professionals, were charged over two weeks in federal courts across the country. The government has seized more than $231 million in cash, luxury vehicles, gold and other assets in connection with the investigation. Some of the cases announced by the Justice Department accused defendants of unlawfully distributing millions of Adderall pills that weren't medically necessary, and illegally prescribing or distributing opioids. Coming up. Can hurricanes help save coral?

Hey, welcome back. Unprecedented ocean heat has triggered the world's worst mass coral bleaching events on record. Data shared with CNN by NOAA reveals that since January 2023, 72% of the planet's reef areas have experienced heat stress capable of bleaching. That surpasses the 65.7% experienced during the last global bleaching event from 2014 to 2017. And scientists are looking to an unlikely source for relief. Hurricanes may actually provide some relief to heat stressed corals because they act like enormous ocean heat vacuums, feasting on warm water and moist air to strengthen. One expert says the area of ocean cooled by a hurricane can extend more than 400 miles from the storm's center. But it's a double edged sword. Hurricanes powerful waves can break fragile corals apart, overturn entire colonies, and significantly harm. If not, kill them.
