Founded in 1325 by the Aztecs as Tenochtitlan, it was both destroyed and rebuilt by the Spanish in the 16th century. It is a fantastic metropolis with so much to see and enjoy. It is a very green and clean city with very safe and convenient public transportation and inexpensive Uber services. There is so much history, world-class museums, fantastic shopping, scenery, and unbelievably tasty restaurants for a fraction of the price you would be charged in comparable cities like New York or LA, and it is only a 2-hour flight from Texas. It is safe, and we didn't have any issues. It is sad that Americans don't travel there as much as travelers from all over the world.

Mexico City is a giant monster of an urban center with something for everyone. There is however, even in the "fancy" neighborhoods, the underlying evidence of potential violence. Boutiques and hotels and restaurants and offices all have armed private security around. There are vendors everywhere and they are mostly if not all indigenous, which evidences the social class discrepancies in the city (and the country) If you like to eat, CDMX is a foodie's paradise. Combined with some cultural even like a museum, a world-class concert and market visit, you will enjoy a 3-4 day stay. We love Mexico City and have visited over the years when my husband guest lectured at UNAM. My husband is now in a wheelchair much of the time, and CDMX is not terribly accommodating to that. The gorgeous, gigantic trees everywhere in La Condesa wreak havoc on the sidewalks. But Ubers are very affordable. Everyone we met was so welcoming. We didn't get around very much this time except for the opening of our son's sculpture show at GAM during Art Week. The dinner afterwards, where we hosted ten of his friends and our friends and gallery people, was remarkably inexpensive and very delicious.

First time in this city. Huge city, with many places to visit. Museums are world-class and very interesting. Check Google for good restaurants. Rio Lerma Street, parallel to Paseo la Reforma, is filled with many restaurants, all with very good ratings. We mainly walk (more than 10 k per day). If you want to ride we recommend Uber. We didn't use the Metro bus but it looked great. Be alert. But we didn't have any bad experiences. Everybody was kind. Traffic jams are frequent and heavy. This a is a great city. Plenty to see and to enjoy. There is food in every street and the locals are very friendly. Plenty of museums, parks and places to visit. There is the general prejudice that is not safe but I walked everywhere and never felt unsafe. Also it is very green and full of trees everywhere. However, traffic is a nightmare.
