McIlroy, McClenaghan & Ames - Who are the athletes heading to Paris?

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are just around the corner.

A grand number of 139 athletes from Northern Ireland and Ireland are heading to Paris for the Games.

We have taken you through from athletics to canoeing, so now it is time to have a look at equestrian to gymnastics.

There are more than a couple of medal hopes here. BBC Sport NI take a look at them.

Belfast cyclist Alice Sharpe will race in the women's team pursuit alongside Laura Gillespie, Mia Griffin and Kelly Murphy.

Gillespie will compete in the women's maidson alongside Sharpe and the women's omnium.

Antrim cyclist Erin Creighton will travel as the team's reserve.

Ireland will have one diving representative at the Paris Olympics. A Junior world and European medallist in 2022, 19-year-old Jake Passmore will compete in the 3m springboard.

Equestrian may not be the most known sport in Ireland but there is a realistic chance of a medal at the Paris Olympics.

Daniel Coyle, from Northern Ireland, on Legacy is a strong contender in the individual jumping.

Coyle and Legacy have won a number of World Cup qualifying events and helped Ireland to the Nations Cup in Canada, which has put them in the medal conversation in Paris.

Cian O'Connor, on Maurice (that's a horse, not a person), and Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz (again, that's his horse) are also in the individual jumping and the trio will also make up Ireland's team in the event.

Abigail Lyle, who is from Bangor, and her horse on Giraldo will be Ireland's sole representative in the dressage.

Ireland's eventing team consists of County Down rider Susie Berry on Wellfields Lincoln, Sarah Ennis on Lady Action M and Austin O'Connor on Colorado Blue.

There will be 17 hockey players from Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland in Paris.

There is one sole representative for Team GB. David Ames will be taking part in this third Olympics and will captain Great Britain.

Lisburn's Sean Murray will captain the team as Ireland return to the Olympics after missing out on Tokyo three years ago.

Murray is joined in the Ulster contingent by Peter Brown, Peter McKibbin, Matthew Nelson, Johnny McKee, Tim Cross, Kyle Marshall and Michael Robson.

You will need little introduction to four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry, who will be representing Ireland in a men's field full of high quality.

The pair in the women's field are also household names. Leona Maguire has established herself as one of the stars of the game while Jordanstown's Stephanie Meadow completes a very talented Irish quartet.

There's only one gymnast from Northern Ireland heading to Paris, but sometimes one is enough when they are as talented as Rhys McClenaghan.

McClenaghan is only 25 but is a two-time world champion, three-time European champion and a Commonwealth champion.

The Newtownards man competed in the delayed 2020 Olympics and finished seventh after a mistake in his final routine.

Fresh off the back of another European gold medal, all eyes will be on Paris to see if he can win the biggest prize of all.
