Trampoline star's family 'overwhelmed' by Paris win

Trampoline star Bryony Page's family have said they were "overwhelmed" after she secured a gold medal for Great Britain in the Paris Olympics.

The athlete, who lives and trains in Poole, won gold in the final of the women's trampoline event on Friday.

The 33-year-old gymnast has completed her set of Olympic medals after winning silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo.

Originally from Crewe, she moved to Dorset with her boyfriend Jake Rainbow - and their cast Sushi - for her training.

Bryony's mum Sarah said when her daughter's win was confirmed she had been "just whooping with absolute pure joy".

"It means so much to her and she's worked so hard," she said while holding back tears.

Mr Rainbow said he felt "overwhelmed with joy".

Her dad Stephen added that the success was the "pinnacle of her career".

"She's a true professional and knows exactly what needs to be done in the most difficult of circumstances, we're so proud," he said.

Stephen, who admitted he did not sleep very well the night before the event, said Bryony's family had brought "as many as we could" over to watch the event.

Page, who took silver at Rio 2016 for GB's first Olympic trampoline medal, secured the ultimate prize in Paris with 56.480 points.

Two-time individual world champion Page had her head in her hands and looked in disbelief at Bercy Arena when her score beat Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya, who took silver, with Canada's Sophiane Methot in bronze.

She told the BBC that her gold medal win had "not sunk in at all", but that it meant "so much".

"I absolutely loved this competition and the crowd, the support, and flying through the sky essentially," she said.

Bryony has previously spoken of her dream to join Cirque du Soleil following her trampolining career, with her father Stephen reiterating it following her win.

"I can't wait to tell an awful lot of my family that my daughter's run off to join the circus," he said.

When asked about Friday evening's celebrations, Stephen said: "I don't know if there will be any champagne left in the district."
