KAT is a Polish heavy metal band formed in 1979 in Katowice, Poland. They have been accused, mainly by the Polish media, of promoting Satanism.[1] In Polish "kat" means executioner. KAT is one of the most important bands in polish heavy metal.[2] KAT's most famous album is Oddech wymarłych światów (The Breath of Extinct Worlds), considered an opus of Polish heavy metal.[2] The band is best known for tracks "Czas zemsty", "Łza dla cieniów minionych", "Wyrocznia" and "Noce Szatana ".

Band history [link]

KAT was founded in 1979 by guitarist Piotr Luczyk and drummer Ireneusz Loth. Shortly after they were joined by bassist Tomasz Jaguś and another guitarist, Ryszard Pisarski. They played instrumental music influenced by hard rock bands, mainly Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. In 1981, during the first edition of the Silesian Rock festival, the band found a singer, Roman Kostrzewski. The line-up was filled out by guitarist Wojciech Mrowiec and in 1984 KAT released the debut single "Noce szatana / Ostatni tabor" (Polish for The Nights of Satan / The Last Train). Robert "Lor" Milewski wrote the lyrics of both songs; since then Kostrzewski became the lyricist, incorporating poetry, Polish folklore, and mysticism. The band also toured with Hanoi Rocks.

In 1985 KAT released their debut album, Metal & Hell. A Polish language version of this full-length was released as a limited album in the same year, with the title was changed to 666. Soon after, Wojciech Mrowiec quit the band. In 1987 KAT performed twice as a support band for Metallica in Katowice's Spodek. This show was documented on KAT's live album 38 Minutes of Life. At that time they also supported Running Wild, Helloween, and Overkill.

After releasing the next full-length album, Oddech wymarłych światów, the band broke up. KAT reformed in 1990 and in 1992 played with TSA and Acid Drinkers at the Jarocin Festival. Two years later, some songs from this show appeared along new ones on a new album, Bastard (1992).

In 1994 in Wisła a new album entitled Ballady was compiled and recorded. It includes KAT's ballads from previous albums, previously unreleased tracks, and two completely new songs. Józef Skrzek was a guest keyboard instrumentalist. In that year, Metal Mind Productions re-released the three first of Kat's albums without the band's permission. Kat sued the company and, after a few years, won the case.[3]

In 1996 and 1997, KAT released the albums Róże miłości najchętniej przyjmują się na grobach and Szydercze zwierciadło. After Jacek Regulski died in a motorcycle accident in 1999, the band split up for three years. They returned in 2002 and toured, again with Luczyk on guitar, and played at Mystic Festival in Hala Ludowa, Wrocław, 2002. During that period they were occasionally supported live by Polish guitarist Valdi Moder.

In 2004 and 2005 KAT had several important changes in its line-up. Firstly, the band fired the drummer, Ireneusz Loth, and then singer and lyricist Roman Kostrzewski. Mariusz Prętkiewicz replaced the former drummer; Jarosław Gronowski joined as a second guitarist (he had played in KAT during the Szydercze zwierciadło tour, since Luczyk was temporariliy out of the band), and Henry Beck became the new singer. The new lineup released Mind Cannibals in 2005, the band's second English language album (after the first LP, Metal & Hell). The lineup changes were very controversial, and band's fan base actually split in two, because Roman Kostrzewski and Ireneusz Loth also created their own band (under moniker "KAT & Roman Kostrzewski") and continue to perform since then.[4]

After recording Mind Cannibals, the band went on tour around Europe (playing together with, for example, Six Feet Under), but did not play in Poland, adding to the controversy since Kostrzewski and Loth were at the time very active with their new band). KAT haven't played in Poland since 2005.

Since 2005, KAT went on hiatus, although there are rumours about a possible successor to Mind Cannibals in the Polish press.[5]

KAT-7

KAT-7 is a radio telescope constructed in the Northern Cape of South Africa. Part of the Karoo Array Telescope project, it is the precursor engineering test bed to the larger MeerKAT telescope, but it has become a science instrument in its own right. The construction was completed in 2011 and commissioned in 2012. It also served as a technology demonstrator for South Africa's bid to host the Square Kilometre Array. KAT-7 is the first Radio telescope to be built with a composite reflector and uses a stirling pump for 75 K cryogenic cooling. The telescope was built to test various system for the MeerKAT array, from the ROACH correlators designed and manufactured in Cape Town, now used by various telescopes internationally, to composite construction techniques. With the short baselines the telescope is suited to observing diffuse sources, but will begin VLBI observation in 2013.

Technical Specifications

KAT-7 consist of 7 dishes of 12 metres in diameter each a Prime Focus Reflecting telescope.

Kat-5 (vehicle)

Kat-5 is an autonomous vehicle created by Team Gray, an organization comprising employees from The Gray Insurance Company and students from Tulane University's School of Engineering, for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge.

The vehicle

Kat-5 is a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid modified with the sensors and actuators needed for autonomous operation. It has an INS/GPS (Inertial Navigation System/Global Positioning System) from Oxford Technical Solutions and LIDAR units from SICK and Riegl. Kat-5 finished the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and placed fourth with a time of 7 hours, 30 minutes, only 37 minutes behind Stanley, the winner of the competition. Kat-5 is powered by almost 100% pure Java and runs both the Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.

Kat-5 uses oscillating LIDARs and information from the INS/GPS unit to create a picture of the surrounding environment. This information is then used to build a path for the vehicle to follow. Kat-5's primary electrical system, used to run the computers and drive-by-wire system, is powered by the standard electrical system of the vehicle while the 24-volt system, used to power the LIDAR sensors, is powered by six solar panels on the roof platform of the vehicle.

Tunø

Tunø is a Danish island in the Kattegat, approximately 4 km west of the neighbouring island of Samsø. The island covers an area of 3.52 km² and has 113 inhabitants, as of 2005. It comes under the administration of Odder municipality. Tunø By is the only village on the island, with the hamlet of Løkkegårde as the second most populated area.

Tunø harbour, lies a little east of the town of Tunø By, and is protected by 2 piers. The marina here has room for approximately 170 boats. From the harbour there is a daily ferry service to and from the town of Hou, East Jutland.

Every summer Tunø hosts a popular music festival, Tunø Festival, attracting Danish and international artists alike. In 2011, Tunø Festival enjoyed its 25th anniversary.

Tunø Church

Tunø church was most likely built in the 14th century in a Romanesque style, however it has undergone many refurbishments and now stands as a Gothic church with stepped gables or corbie steps. The church is famous for its tower which also functions as a lighthouse. The tower was originally completed in 1801. It was extended to a height of 31 metres above sea level in 1820. The tower was again heightened in 1906 to improve view to and from the lighthouse. In the past the minister would have also served as the lighthouse keeper.

Tun (Maya calendar)

A Tun (Mayan pronunciation: [tun]) is a part of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar system which corresponds to 18 winal cycles or 360 days.

The Cataracs

The Cataracs was an American hip hop indie-pop production project (formerly duo) formed in Berkeley, California consisting of songwriter, vocalist, and producer Niles "Cyranizzy" Hollowell-Dhar (born 6 October 1988), and formerly songwriter and vocalist David "Campa" Benjamin Singer-Vine (born 1987). The duo started out as an independent group, during their years at Berkeley High School. The two were first signed to the label Indie-Pop. Singer-Vine left the group in August 2012 with Hollowell-Dhar continuing on with the name The Cataracs despite David's departure. Hollowell-Dhar also released materials starting 2014, under the name of KSHMR.

Biography

Early days

The duo met in their sophomore year while attending Berkeley High School. Singer-Vine was featured in a rap CD that was being passed around campus. When Dhar eventually heard the CD, he subsequently created a response. However, the “diss” response brought the two together and they soon became friends. In 2003, the two joined together to create what is now The Cataracs (named after the phrase “Who smoke ‘til your eyes get cataracts” from Snoop Dogg's song “What's my name Pt. 2”). In the summer of 2006, they released their first album, Technohop Vol. 1. In August 2006, the group joined with The Pack to make the single “Blueberry Afghani”. The song soon became a hit and was chosen as a “Download of the Week” by 106 KMEL and many music sites such as The Fader, UK’s Hip Hop Connection and XLR8R praised it.
