Percona, Inc. is a software company specializing in database support, development and training. The company was founded in 2006 by Vadim Tkachenko[1] and Peter Zaitsev,[2] and its headquarters is in Pleasanton, California. The company provides database consultancy and development to customers including the BBC, Groupon, RightNow Technologies, Answers.com and 37signals.[3]

In November 2012, the telecommunications company Telefónica announced that Joyent appliances with Percona Server would be used for its cloud computing service Instant Servers.[4][5]

In December 2012, Percona, SkySQL and The Monty Program AB, led by MySQL's creator Monty Widenius, announced the formation of the MariaDB Foundation to oversee the development of MariaDB.[6][7]

  • Percona Server is a fork of the MySQL relational database. It employs the company's replacement database engine XtraDB,[8] a replacement for Oracle InnoDB[9]
  • Percona Toolkit is a fork of the Maatkit database utilities created by former Percona employee Baron Schwartz.[10]
  • Percona Monitoring Plugins are MySQL monitoring and graphing components, designed to integrate with monitoring tools such as Nagios and Cacti, also created by Baron Schwartz.[11]
  • Percona PAM authentication plugin For MySQL allows authentication of access to MySQL using the standard pluggable authentication module mechanism.[12]
